Electropulsing anisotropy of cold-rolled Grade 2 titanium sheet: Effect of electric current direction on recrystallization and hardness

This study investigated the effects of electropulsing treatment (EPT) condition on the microstructure and microhardness of cold-rolled Grade 2 Ti sheet. Particular attention was paid to the dependence of the material properties on the electric current direction, referred to as electropulsing anisotropy. Direct-current (DC) EPT was applied along either the rolling direction (RD) or transverse direction (TD) of the rolled sheet. EPT along the TD resulted in a higher heating rate and maximum temperature, whereas that along the RD accelerated the static recrystallization (SRX) process under identical electropulsing parameters. Such a discrepancy was interpreted using the elongated grain structure and basal texture in the cold-rolled Ti sheet. These results were further supported by microhardness measurements, confirming the presence of electropulsing anisotropy during DC EPT in Ti alloys for the first time. In addition, the employed EPT was compared to a traditional furnace heat treatment (FHT) with rigorous temperature and time control, wherein the optimum EPT process spent only 13% of the processing time to complete SRX with a lower thermal energy requirement. This indicates a significant athermal contribution of EPT to electropulsing anisotropy.

Corticomotor Control of Lumbar Erector Spinae in Postural and Voluntary Tasks: The Influence of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Current Direction.

Lumbar erector spinae (LES) contribute to spine postural and voluntary control. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) preferentially depolarizes different neural circuits depending on the direction of electrical currents evoked in the brain. Posteroanterior current (PA-TMS) and anteroposterior (AP-TMS) current would, respectively, depolarize neurons in the primary motor cortex (M1) and the premotor cortex. These regions may contribute differently to LES control. This study examined whether responses evoked by PA- and AP-TMS are different during the preparation and execution of LES voluntary and postural tasks. Participants performed a reaction time task. A Warning signal indicated to prepare to flex shoulders (postural; n = 15) or to tilt the pelvis (voluntary; n = 13) at the Go signal. Single- and paired-pulse TMS (short-interval intracortical inhibition-SICI) were applied using PA- and AP-TMS before the Warning signal (baseline), between the Warning and Go signals (preparation), or 30 ms before the LES onset (execution). Changes from baseline during preparation and execution were calculated in AP/PA-TMS. In the postural task, MEP amplitude was higher during the execution than that during preparation independently of the current direction (p = 0.0002). In the voluntary task, AP-MEP amplitude was higher during execution than that during preparation (p = 0.016). More PA inhibition (SICI) was observed in execution than that in preparation (p = 0.028). Different neural circuits are preferentially involved in the two motor tasks assessed, as suggested by different patterns of change in execution of the voluntary task (AP-TMS, increase; PA-TMS, no change). Considering that PA-TMS preferentially depolarize neurons in M1, it questions their importance in LES voluntary control.

Electrical conductivity of salmon muscles – analysis of the influence of muscle position and electrical current direction during ohmic heating

Abstract In this study, the heating penetration in salmon muscle tissue was evaluated during ohmic heating (OH) at 20 kHz. The electrical conductivities (ECs) in five muscle-tissue sections (fat content from 7.85 to 21.15 %) of salmon were measured under different conditions of applied frequency (50 Hz–20 kHz), temperature (5–70 °C), and direction of the electric current (parallel or series) in relation to the muscle arrangement. Significant differences in the ECs of the five sections were found, especially at high frequencies. A lower fat content and the parallel current direction resulted in higher ECs than a higher fat content and the series current direction. Empirical equations were derived to determine the EC values of all five sections of the salmon fillet based on their temperature dependence. The cooking losses after OH processes were low in the order of parallel < series < minced. These results are of potential value for the design of the OH process for salmon-based products.

Anisotropic magnetoresistance: materials, models and applications.

Resistance of certain (conductive and otherwise isotropic) ferromagnets turns out to exhibit anisotropy with respect to the direction of magnetization: for magnetization parallel to the electric current direction is different from R⊥ for magnetization perpendicular to the electric current direction. In this review, this century-old phenomenon is reviewed both from the perspective of materials and physical mechanisms involved. More recently, this effect has also been identified and studied in antiferromagnets. To date, sensors based on the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) effect are widely used in different fields, such as the automotive industry, aerospace or in biomedical imaging.

Experimental investigation of omnidirectional multiphysics bilayer invisibility cloak with anisotropic geometry

Thermal-electric bilayer invisibility cloak can prevent the heat flux and electric current from touching the object without distorting the external temperature and electric potential fields simultaneously. In this paper, we design an omnidirectional thermal-electric invisibility cloak with anisotropic geometry. Based on the theory of neutral inclusion, the anisotropic effective thermal and electric conductivities of confocal elliptical bilayer core–shell structure are derived, thus obtaining the anisotropic matrix material to eliminate the external disturbances omnidirectionally. The inner shell of the cloak is selected as an insulating material to shield the heat flux and electric current. Then, the omnidirectional thermal-electric cloaking effect is verified numerically and experimentally based on the theoretical anisotropic matrix and manufactured composite structure, respectively. Furthermore, we achieve the thermal-electric cloaking effect under a specific direction of heat flux and electric current using the isotropic natural materials to broaden the selection range of materials. The method proposed to eliminate anisotropy and achieve the omnidirectional effect could also be expanded to other different physical fields for the metadevices with different functions.

Observation of anisotropic magneto-inductance effect

We have discovered a new phenomenon that inductance oscillates as a function of the angle between an in-plane magnetic field and an electric current direction in permalloy films, which we have named “the anisotropic magneto-inductance (AML) effect.” We have investigated the dependences of the AML effect on the size and voltage. The length, frequency, and amplitude dependences suggest that the AML effect should be evaluated in terms of “inductivity.” Inductors based on this AML effect have the potential to be variable, on-chip, and one billion times smaller than the small commercial inductor.

Evaluation of microbial corrosion in biofuel storage tanks using split-chamber zero resistance ammetry

Split-chamber zero resistance ammetry (SC-ZRA) was used to study microbiologically influenced corrosion by aerobic chemoorganotrophic microeukaryotes isolated from biodiesel storage tanks. The magnitude and direction of electric current were measured between two shorted carbon steel electrodes, which were deployed in separate chambers connected by a salt bridge (via a SC-ZRA assembly). This approach permitted rapid screening for the corrosive activity of these previously understudied microeukaryotes. During this study, two previously understudied microeukaryotes (Byssochlamys sp. SW2 and Yarrowia lipolytica) showed increased biomass, an increase in electrochemical signal (current), and a corresponding increase in corrosion rate (weight loss). However, other previously understudied microeukaryote (Wickerhammomyces sp. SE3) showed an increase in biomass without an increase in electrochemical signal and minimal corrosion rate, indicating that the SC-ZRA technique can screen for the corrosive activity of a microorganism, regardless of overall microbial activity. This technique could be used to quickly assess the corrosive potential for a range of previously understudied microorganisms.Graphical Abstract

Electric current-assisted manipulation of liquid metals using a stylus at micro-and nano-scales

A novel methodology, based on wetting and electromigration, for transporting liquid metal, over long distances, at micro-and nano-scale using a stylus is reported. The mechanism is analogous to a dropper that uses ‘suction and release’ actions to ‘collect and dispense’ liquid. In our methodology, a stylus coated with a thin metal film acts like the dropper that collects liquid metal from a reservoir upon application of an electric current, holds the liquid metal via wetting while carrying the liquid metal over large distances away from the reservoir and drops it on the target location by reversing the direction of electric current. Essentially, the working principle of the technique relies on the directionality of electromigration force and adhesive force due to wetting. The working of the technique is demonstrated by using an Au-coated Si micropillar as the stylus, liquid Ga as the liquid metal to be transported, and a Kleindiek-based position micro-manipulator to traverse the stylus from the liquid reservoir to the target location. For demonstrating the potential applications, the technique is utilized for closing a micro-gap by dispensing a minuscule amount of liquid Ga and conformally coating the desired segment of the patterned thin films with liquid Ga. This study confirms the promising potential of the developed technique for reversible, controlled manipulation of liquid metal at small length scales.

Microtensile bond strength of resin composite to dentin using different adhesive systems and directions of electric current

Thisstudy aimed to evaluate the effect of the electric current direction application on the resin composite-dentin bond strength using three adhesive systems. Human molar teeth were distributed according to the adhesive system (two-step self-etch - Clearfil SE Bond, Kuraray [CSE]; one-step self-etch - Single Bond Universal, 3M ESPE [SBU]; and two-step etch-and-rinse - Adper Single Bond 2, 3M ESPE [SB2]), electric current direction (without electric current - control, direct and reverse electric currents - 35µA), and storage time (24h - immediate and 6 months). Resin composite blocks (Filtek Z350XT, 3M ESPE) were bonded to dentin. The teeth/resin composites specimens were stored in distilled water at 37ºC for 24 hours and 6 months for the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) test (n = 10; ~12 sticks for each tooth). Failure patterns were analyzed on a stereomicroscope and classified as cohesive-dentin, cohesive-resin, adhesive or mixed. Adhesive penetration into dentin and hybrid layer formation were evaluated in a scanning electron microscope (n = 6). Data were submitted to a three-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test (α = 0.05). There are no differences in µTBS when the adhesive systems were applied under direct and reverse electric currents, but both electric currents increased the µTBS for all adhesive systems. SBU showed the lowest µTBS values for control groups in both storage times and direct electric current in 6 months of storage. The adhesive failure pattern was more frequently observed in all groups. The electric current formed long resin tags for all adhesive systems. Storage for 6 months did not significantly decrease µTBS values. Both directions of electric current (positive and negative charges) at 35µA can increase the µTBS of the adhesive systems tested to dentin.

Study of migration and coalescence of voids driven by electric current stressing in solder interconnects using phase field simulation

Voids in solder interconnects play a crucial role in influencing performance and reliability of solder interconnects, and even lead to the open failure of electronics, especially when high density electric current flowing through the solder interconnects. In this paper, the morphological evolution and migration behaviour of the voids in the solder domain of solder interconnects under electric current stressing is investigated using a developed phase field model. Results show that the surface energy drives the coalescence of voids, and large size voids grow up at the expense of small size ones. The voids migrate along the electric current direction, and the current density distribution and void distribution interactively affect the evolution and migration of the voids. The high magnitude of electric field can potentially induce the open-circuit failure, and the void size is affected by the electric field. Moreover, the voltage across the solder domain increases as the voids migrate to the cathode side. Furthermore, the electric field can promote the void coarsening, and the void migration velocity increases almost linearly with the magnitude of the electric field.

Fabrication of superconducting coils and (Ba,A)Fe2As2 (A:Na, K) long round wires with large superconducting cores

We fabricated superconducting coils using 10-20 m-class round wires of 122-type iron-based superconductors (IBSs). Round wires and coils are fabricated by powder-in-tube method and hot-isostatic-press technique. Transport critical current (I c) of the whole (Ba,K)Fe2As2 coil is 46 A under the self-field at 4.2 K, and magnetic field at the center of the coil reaches 0.3 T. Although the edge of the long wire in the coil is damaged, the rest of the part is relatively homogeneous. Furthermore, the largest transport critical current density (J c) and I c in (Ba,K)Fe2As2 wires picked up from the coil reach 49 kAcm−2 and 44 A at 4.2 K under a magnetic field of 10 T, respectively. This value exceeds the previous highest transport J c of (Ba,K)Fe2As2 round wires. We also fabricated a (Ba,Na)Fe2As2 coil using long round wire with large superconducting core by react and wind method. Transport I c of the coil is significantly low due to cracks perpendicular to electric current flow direction, although magnetic J c in the round wire picked up from the coil reaches 40 kAcm−2 at 4.2 K under 4 T.

Improved Co-substituted zinc vanadate ceramics based on LTCC for enhanced polarization converters

A novel low-loss and low-sintering temperature Zn3-xCox(VO4)2 (ZCVO) (x = 0.25) ceramic for enhanced polarization converters is developed by solid-state reaction methodology. This ceramic has excellent microwave dielectric properties (εr = 13.6, Q×f = 32173 GHz (@10.1 GHz), τf = −74.5 ppm/℃) and good chemical compatibility with Ag. According to microstructural analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations, it is revealed that an appropriate amount of Co2+ substitution can enhance the density, regulate the dielectric constant (εr), and improve the Q×f and τf values. Based on this ceramic, an enhanced polarization converter is designed. The maximum efficiency is as high as 90.38%. And the performance of this polarization converter can be regulated by the εr and dielectric loss of ZCVO ceramics. The mechanism and function of the polarization converter are revealed according to the electric field strength, current direction, and far-field pattern. This work expands the application of microwave dielectric ceramics.

Giant Negative Magnetoresistance beyond Chiral Anomaly in Topological Material YCuAs2.

The large negative magnetoresistance (MR) effect, which usually emerges in various magnetic systems, is a technologically important property for spintronics. Recently, the so-called "chiral anomaly" in topological semimetals offers an alternative to generate a considerable negative MR effect without utilizing magnetism. However, it requires that the applied magnetic field must be strictly along the electric current direction, which sets a strong limit for practical applications. Here, a giant negative MR effect is discovered with a value of up to -40% in 9 T at 2 K in the nonmagnetic Dirac material YCuAs2 , which is not restricted to the specific configuration for applied magnetic fields. Based on magnetic susceptibility and NMR measurements, the giant negative MR effect is tightly connected with the unexpected spin-dependent scattering from vacancy-induced local moments, which is also beyond the classical Kondo effect. The present work not only offers an alternative route for spintronics based on nonmagnetic topological materials, but also helps to further understand the negative MR effect in topological materials.

Spin–orbit torque driven skyrmion motion under unconventional spin Hall effect

The effective control of skyrmion motion is a critical aspect for realizing skyrmion-based devices. Among the potential directions, the use of current induced spin–orbit torque (SOT) is energetically efficient. However, the conventional heavy metals with high crystal symmetry limit the charge-to-spin conversion to the orthogonal configuration, which causes the skyrmions to deflect from the electrical current direction with a finite skyrmion Hall angle. Here, we investigate the SOT driven skyrmion motion under unconventional spin Hall effect. We systematically study the effect of a noncollinear low-symmetry spin source layer with spin moments mixed by Rashba-like S y , Dresselhaus-like S x and out-of-plane like S z on skyrmion features (velocity, diameter and Hall angle) stabilized in a ferromagnet/WTe2 heterostructure. Our results may provide a new degree of freedom for controlling the skyrmion Hall angle, and can open the way for the discovery of new ferromagnetic multilayer where the skyrmion Hall angle is suppressed by the proper design of different SOT driven forces.

Experimental study on liquid metal free surface flow under magnetic and electric field for nuclear fusion

In the future application of nuclear fusion, the liquid metal flows are considered to be an attractive option of the first wall of the tokamak which can effectively remove impurities and improve the confinement of plasma. Moreover, the flowing liquid metal can solve the problem of the corrosion of the solid first wall due to high thermal load and particle discharge. In the magnetic confinement fusion reactor, the liquid metal flow experiences strong magnetic and electric, fields from plasma. In the present paper, an experiment has been conducted to explore the influence of electric and magnetic fields on liquid metal flow. The direction of electric current is perpendicular to that of the magnetic field direction, and thus the Lorentz force is upward or downward. A laser profilometer based on the laser triangulation technique is used to measure the thickness of the liquid film of Galinstan. The phenomenon of the liquid column from the free surface is observed by the high-speed camera under various flow rates, intensities of magnetic field and electric field. Under a constant external magnetic field, the liquid column appears at the position of the incident current once the external current exceeds a critical value, which is inversely proportional to the magnetic field. The thickness of the flowing liquid film increases with the intensities of magnetic field, electric field, and Reynolds number. The thickness of the liquid film at the incident current position reaches a maximum value when the force is upward. The distribution of liquid metal in the channel presents a parabolic shape with high central and low marginal. Additionally, the splashing, i.e. the detachment of liquid metal is not observed in the present experiment, which suggests a higher critical current for splashing to occur.

Structure of Magnetic Inhomogeneities in Films with Topological Features

Magnetic films with easy plane uniaxial anisotropy are studied. It is shown that in these films structural defects such as artificially created holes or nonmagnetic inclusions can give rise to vortex-like inhomogeneities with a topological charge. Analysis of their stability reveals parameters (the magnitude and direction of electric currents, the number of holes, etc.) at which they form stable configurations suitable for information encoding.

The Effect of Grain Orientation of β-Sn on Copper Pillar Solder Joints during Electromigration

The grain orientation of Sn-based solder joints on copper pillars under the combined action of electron wind force and temperature gradient greatly affects their electromigration damage. The copper pillars with Sn-1.8Ag lead-free solder on the top was subjected to a current density of 1.5 × 104 A/cm2 at 125 °C to study the electromigration behaviors. The grain orientation was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) detector. Metal dissolution and voids formation in the cathode as well as massive intermetallic compounds(IMC) accumulation in the anode were observed after electromigration. Closer examination of solder joints revealed that the Sn grain whose c-axis perpendicular to electric current may have retarded Cu diffusion to anode and IMC accumulation. In addition, the newly formed Cu6Sn5 exhibited preferred orientation related to the electric current direction.

Effects of dimensionality and excitation energy on the Raman tensors of triclinic ReSe2

AbstractIn this work, we present measurements of angle‐resolved polarized Raman spectra of single‐layer (1L) and bulk ReSe2 recorded with excitation energies of 1.92 eV (647.1 nm) and 2.34 eV (530.8 nm). The Raman tensors for all modes were obtained by fitting simultaneously the angular dependence of the parallel (I‖) and crossed (I⊥) polarized intensities. We observed that the tensor elements are, in general, complex numbers, and their magnitudes and phases depend on both the dimensionality of the sample (1L or bulk) and the excitation energy. Results are discussed by considering the intrinsic contribution of a single layer to the tensor elements and the macroscopic contribution coming from the stacking of several layers. We show that the different behaviour of angle‐resolved polarized Raman spectra for different excitation energies is due to the resonant Raman effect, which affects both the real and imaginary parts of the Raman tensor elements. Our work highlights the importance of understanding the fundamental physics of low symmetry 2D materials that can be used to fabricate devices sensitive to the direction of light polarization or electrical current.

Zebrafish larva’s response and habituation to electric signal: Effects of voltage, current and pulsation studied in a microfluidic device

We previously showed that electric current induces zebrafish larvae to move towards the anode pole along a microchannel. For a larva with a fixed head and a moving tail, we observed that the response to electricity depended on the current magnitude. The effects of electric signal direction, voltage magnitude and habituation to repeated exposures to electric pulses were not characterized. Here, this knowledge gap was addressed by exploiting them in a microfluidic device with a head-trap to immobilize a zebrafish larva and a downstream chamber for tail movement phenotypic characterization based on response duration (RD) and tail beat frequency (TBF). We first assessed larvae’s response to electric current direction (at 3 µA) and voltage magnitude. Changing the current direction significantly altered the RD and TBF with long and low-frequency responses seen when the anode was positioned at the larvae’s tail. The electric voltage had a significant effect on larvae’s locomotion with long RD and low TBF observed at 5.6 V in the range of 1.3–9 V. We also demonstrated that the zebrafish locomotor response to repeated 3 µA current pulses diminished with dependency on the interstimulus interval. However, the diminished response was fully recovered after a 5-min resting period or introduction of a novel light stimulus (i.e., habituation-dishabituation strategy). Therefore, electric response suppression in zebrafish was attributed to the habituation as a form of non-associative learning. Our microfluidic platform has a broad application potential in behavioral neuroscience to study cognitive phenotypes, fundamental studies on the biological roots of electric response, and in pharmacological screening.

Определение электрической проводимости графеносодержащего шунгита с использованием высокоразрешающей растровой электронной микроскопии.

The electrical conductivity of carbon component of graphene-contained shungite is investigated. The basis of this investigation is the statistic processing of carbon distribution cards which are obtained by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. For the original card of carbon distribution it is proposed the method of building of contour card with following conversion its into binary card which consist of net from cells having black and white colours. The statistic analysis of repeating of binary card structure in the frame of selected region having square form. It is shown that the relative concentration of cells both colour in selected region by the increasing of its dimensions undertakes the scattering which increases when dimension of region is decreased. It is found the minimal dimension of region in which the deflection of relative concentration of cells of unit colour from the constant value of this concentration is not more then 20%. This dimension is received as flat-characteristic of middle-statistic block which relative properties repeats the relative properties of structure as a whole. From the conditions of isotropy of carbon component of shungite the space model of symmetrical along three axis cubic middle-statistic block which consist of cubic cells both colours. It is established that black cells correspond to large conductivity and white cells correspond to small conductivity. In connection with the direction of electric current which flows along the flat of card it is proposed two kinds of graphene packets orientation. In this case the black cells having large conductivity are identified with graphene packets where the current flows along the graphene slides and the white cells having small conductivity are identified with graphene packets where the current flows across the graphene slides. For the analysis of conductivity of middle-statistic block the model of current tubes is proposed. From the whole structure of block the two kinds of tubes are selected. This kinds of tubes correspond to different cases of alternate with each other black and white cells. The structure of these tubes is identified with the set of favourable and non-favourable oriented graphene packets. On the basis of known resistances of graphene slide it is calculated the resistances of packets having favourable and non-favourable orientations. Using this resistances of packets the resistances of tubes are calculated. It is shown that the main role in resistance of tubes formation plays the resistance of intervals between graphene slides and graphene packets. Using obtained resistances of tubes it is found the resistance of middle-statistic block which has the parallel connections of tubes. On the basis of middle-statistic block resistance it is found the specific resistance and the back proportional to this resistance the specific conductivity of carbon component of shungite. It is shown that the main parameter which determines the resistance and conductivity is the specific resistance of interval between graphene slides and graphene packets. It is execute the comparison of determined specific conductivity with the observed in experiments specific conductivities of shungite received from different natural deposits. The some practical remarks and some little defects are proposed. The possibilities of improvement of proposed model are discussed.
