Economic factors for aircraft electric power systems

AIRCRAFT electric power systems are comprised of the following four elements: prime mover, generation, distribution, and utilization. Each of these elements is interdependent and decisions affecting any one element may also influence decisions on the others. The interdependence is evident in any problems related to performance on economy of the electric power system.

THE performance of 208/120-volt 400-cycle constant-frequency aircraft electric power systems under abnormal conditions resulting from synchronizing disturbances, loss of field excitation, and short circuits is described. As a basis for this study, tests were made on 40-kva alternators, to determine their electrical parameters. The values of these parameters expressed in per unit are listed in Table I.

Outstanding progress has been made in improved designs of reduced weight and space and increased performance and life. Much work still remains in device engineering to work continually toward further improvements as new materials and new techniques become available. Increase in aircraft operating demands will probably continue to mean electric power systems of increased size and improved reliability. These requirements will call for more work in development of devices of increased rating and performance. Still further, many of the devices currently used have not had the benefit of the improved design techniques and materials that are evident in some of the more advanced designs. Hence, it appears that engineering problems related to designs of individual devices ? device engineering ? will continue to be an important part of engineering for aircraft electric systems.
