A nutrition intervention study’s effect to hematology profiles on elderly group in social retirement home

The increase in the elderly brings consequences, including a higher risk of disease. Inappropriate nutritional intake is also known as one of the risk factors related to the elderly's non-communicable diseases, and nutritional intervention is essential to improve the elderly nutritional status and quality of life. It was an interventional study with a before-after one-group approach. The study was conducted for three months (October-December 2021) in three social retirement homes. The intervention given was supplementation with additional protein sources and snacks each day. The biochemistry profiles were taken 2 times: before and after three months of intervention, comprised of HbA1c, lipid, transferrin, creatinine, and blood pressure level. The data will be analyzed for its normality before being processed with paired t-test or Wilcoxon signed rank based on the normality results. The analysis results show that there are significantly lower transferrin levels (p=0.040), an increase in cholesterol level (p=0.000), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) level increased from 114.05±32.03 to 125.94±31.41 (p=0.000). There is also a remarkable decrease in hemoglobin (p=0.005) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. Conversely, there are an increase in HbA1C (p=0.007) and triglyceride level (p=0.005). There is no significant difference in creatinine level. We conclude that nutrition interventions have a significant effect on elderly blood profiles. However, to achieve an improvement, the study should consider physical activity and other variables that might be altering the results.

The Nutritional Status of Elderly People in A Nursing Home City of Sabzevar In 2015

Due to physiological changes in the elderly, elderly nutritional status in developing countries is an important issue that has received little attention. Nutritional factors on mortality, morbidity and quality of life are effective. Through epidemiological diseases, increased life expectancy and an increase in the number of old age, and consequently the number of elderly who need medical services will be added. Studies show that the turnout at the world's largest nutritional status, play a prominent role in health and disease and people 65 years and older for many low-income elderly and the poor, the most important factor. Known dietary factors, including chronic diseases, oral health problems, lack of emotional functioning, social isolation, taking multiple medications, socioeconomic status / F physical disability, sedentary lifestyle, depression and dementia, and reduced production gastric acid. The cognitive factors that make a person vulnerable to severe illnesses exhausted physical condition of the body and finally admitted to the hospital. Studies have shown that malnutrition is an independent risk factor for hospital admission in the elderly. Materials and Methods This study is a cross-sectional descriptive study population included all elderly men and women living in nursing homes has been a city of Sabzevar. 120 samples were randomly selected (60 males and 60 females). Collect data using observation and questionnaires were used. Anthropometric values weighing, measuring height, weight, body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Standard questionnaire MNA (Mini Nutritional Assessment) that was used for grading the nutritional condition of the elderly. Results Mother in a nursing home survey data show that 5 people suffer from malnutrition, 31 people were at risk of malnutrition and 14 normal powers. Behavioral model-guided nutritional counseling could improve the dietary practice and nutritional status of elders in Ethiopia: a quasi-experimental study

BackgroundPhysiological, pathological, and socioeconomic changes occurring in older people negatively influence food intake, utilization, nutritional status, and health. These problems are deeply rooted in low socio-economic settings and could partly be addressed through systematic behavioral change approaches. Hence, this study was to evaluate the effect of behavioral model-guided nutritional counseling on the dietary intake and nutritional status of elders.MethodsA one-armed pre- and post-test quasi-experimental design was conducted on 293 community-dwelling older adults aged above 60 years from January to May 2022. A health education tool was developed and validated using health beliefs and the theory of behavioral change. The sessions were delivered by trained nurses through home-to-home visits every week lasting 45–60 min for up to two months. Data on nutritional knowledge, dietary intake, and body weight were captured using standardized questionnaires and measurements. The primary outcome was captured using the validated mini-nutritional assessment (MNA) tool and classified accordingly. The data was analyzed using Stata software, where it is presented in tables, graphs, and summary statistics. A paired t-test and the p-value were used to identify statistically significant effects of the intervention.ResultsA total of 263 elders were involved in the experiment, and modeled nutritional counseling significantly improved the knowledge score from 7.58 (± 1.05) to 11.6 (± 1.37) (P < 0.001) at the pre- and post-intervention periods. A significant improvement has been shown in the consumption of dairy products, fruits, and animal-source foods and, importantly, in the mean dietary diversity score (p < 0.001). As a result, the burden of malnutrition was significantly lower in the post-intervention period (9.6%: 7.9–11.3) compared to baseline (12.5%: 11.4–13.8). There is a significant increase in the mini-nutrition assessment score (MD = 0.30; p = 0.007). The mean body weight and the body mass index did not change significantly after the intervention (p > 0.05).ConclusionTargeted behavioral model-guided nutritional counseling could help promote perception, diversify dietary consumption, and reduce the risk of undernutrition among elders. Particular attention to older people with the use of participant-centered nutritional behavioral change interventions coupled with livelihood support could help reduce undernutrition among older people.Trial registrationClinical Trial Registration-URL: www.clinicaltrials.gov, identifier number: NCT04746664, first released 10/02/2021.

The Assessment of Daily Menus in Nursing Home Residents for Improving Intake and Nutritional Status in Elderly

Background: Malnutrition has impacted the health condition and life quality of the elderly who live in nursing homes. Unmaximized menu planning can cause this condition. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the nutrition content of the menu provided by the nursing home based on recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for older people and to identify the current nutrition status of the elderly Methods: The food intakes were evaluated by observing all menus during the five days. Nutrient contents were analyzed by calculating all meal nutrition and comparing them to the recommended dietary allowance for the elderly. Body weight was measured using Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA) Tanita, and a stadiometer measured body height. Furthermore, weight and high were measured based on body mass index calculation to measure nutritional status. Results: It was found that the mean energy content was 1242.6 ± 193.9 kcal/day, and only 69.03 ± 10.7% fulfilled the recommendation. For protein content, it only met 70.5% of the RDA. Macronutrients such as protein are only 70.5% of the recommended dietary needs for the elderly. From BMI analysis, it was found that 26.23 % of the elderly are undernutrition. Conclusions: The nutritional content of the menus served for the elderly in nursing homes did not yet meet the daily requirement and is still below that recommended for the elderly, so the nutrient of the menus should be increased to achieve optimum nutritional status.

Identification of the Elderly's Nutritional Status in Institutions

The nutritional problems of the elderly are directly related to their physical condition, so it affects their strength in carrying out daily routines.The aim of the research was to evaluate the nutritional status of the elderly.. The research method is quantitative with descriptive. A Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) questionnaire was used to collect data. The number of sample were 51 elderly with purposive sampling technique. The results showed that 15.7% were malnourished, 58.8% were at risk of malnutrition, 25.5% were normal. It is suggested to policymakers that nurses pay special attention by constantly monitoring nutritional status,developing nutrition programs, and involving external factors.

Repercussion of Covid-19 on Health and Nutritional Status of Elderly: Current Scenario

Ageing is an inevitable process with numerous changes in a physiological, biological, cognitive, and social environment. The COVID-19 pandemic has posed an unprecedented public health crisis globally. Both the problems adversely affect the nutritional and health status of the elderly. Malnutrition, increase risk of chronic morbidities, low socioeconomic status along with social deprivations influence the health and well-being of old age. Lack of physical activity is common due to loss of skeletal muscle mass and an increase of fat mass eventually causes functional inability. The review aimed to report the impact of Covid-19 on the health and nutritional status of the elderly. A thorough recent literature search was conducted using PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar databases using specific keywords related to the aims. All related articles published on COVID-19 during 2020 and their effect on health and nutrition in the elderly were retrieved. The study found that nutritional status influences mortality and co-morbidities among the elderly during the COVID-19 situation. Furthermore, the study found that though nutritional indicators, that is, overweight or obese, significantly increase the risk of co-morbid conditions among older adults, good nutrition reduces the risk of all-cause mortality. Although ageing is an irreversible process, it is never too late to start practicing a healthy behavioral lifestyle for achieving healthy ageing.

The Impact of Living Arrangement to Elderly Nutritional Health Status in Jember

Introductions: Nutrition has an important role in maintaining the elderly’s health status. The living arrangement is one of the external factors affecting access to food. This study aims to determine the impact of living arrangements on the nutritional status of the elderly. Method: It is a correlational study with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 103 elderly were involved through a consecutive sampling technique. A questionnaire and MNA were used to collect the data, and a chi-square test was used to answer the hypothesis. Result: Statistical analysis results p-value of 0.000 smaller than α 0,05 with RR 11,458 95% confidence interval. Analysis: This means that the living arrangement impacts the elderly nutritional status, and the elderly who live alone are at 11,458 greater risks of experiencing malnutrition than the elderly who live with their families. Discussion: Being engaged with the family provides social support for them. Social interaction needs to be improved so that the elderly will create a positive coping mechanism, enjoy the taste of the food, and have a better quality of life.

Knowledge and Nutritional Status of Elderly

Old age is someone who has reached more than 60 years of age and has limitations in making a living to meet their daily needs. Elderly are individuals who have experienced an aging process and decreased endurance making it vulnerable to disease. Problems that often occur in the elderly are malnutrition and infection. Elderly who cannot meet their daily needs independently tend to experience underweight. Besides being influenced by knowledge, habits are also very important in shaping the health of the elderly. The purpose of this study was to identify the knowledge and nutritional status of the elderly in the Medan City area. The research design used is descriptive with a total of 30 elderly respondents. Data collection is done by interviewing respondents one by one. The results of the study found that the majority of the elderly have less knowledge about nutrition and the majority of the nutritional status of the elderly is in the poor category. Researchers advise the community, especially the elderly, to be active in activities held by local health workers to gain and improve knowledge, especially those related to the nutritional needs of the elderly.

Anthropometric Profile and Nutritional Status in Elderly: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Various screening tools are used to identify elderly individuals who are malnourished or at risk for malnutrition based on their nutritional status. Anthropometric measurements are important indicators of an individual’s nutritional status. In this study, we aimed to establish anthropometric standards for the Turkish elderly population and to investigate any significant relationship between anthropometric characteristics and nutritional status.&#x0D; Materials and Methods: Age, sex, weight, height, waist-to-hipratio (WHR) and body massindex (BMI) were recorded. We also administered the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) and a hand grip test.&#x0D; Results: In our study, 72% of males and 84% of females were in the overweight group, 24% of males and 16% of females were in the normal weight group, and only 4% of males were in theweak group. For males, 76% were not at risk for malnutrition, 20% were at risk, and 4% were determined to have malnutrition. For females, 68% were not at risk for malnutrition, and 32% were at risk. There were no females who had malnutrition. With regard to muscle strength, 80% of males and 92% of females did not have sufficient strength. Weight, grip strength and WHR were significantly related to MNA (p &lt; 0.05).&#x0D; Conclusion: We provided sex-specific distributions for many anthropometric measurements for the elderly which can be used as reference values for the Turkish elderly population to identify individuals at greater risk for nutritional disorders.

Nutritional Status and Diet in Elderly with Low and High Socioeconomic Status

Abstract Background Socioeconomic status (SES) patterned health disparities have been related to differences in dietary intake, especially in the elderly. Still, it is not known to what extent these differences culminate in vitamin deficiencies, as most studies have assessed nutrient intake, instead of measuring nutritional biomarkers. Hence, we aimed to objectively assess nutritional status in elderly with low and high SES and to investigate whether potential differences therein were mediated by diet. Methods 1605 individuals (60-75 years) were selected from the LifeLines Cohort Study to create two gender-matched groups with different SES. Nutritional status was assessed by measuring folic acid, vitamin B6, B12, D, A, E and K in the collected samples. SES-groups were defined according to highest completed education as high and low, and dietary quality was assessed the Lifelines Diet Score. Multiple linear regression and logistic regression were first used for the association between SES and vitamin status; and mediation analysis was used to explore the relationship of SES, diet and vitamin status. Results The overall prevalence of vitamin deficiency ranged from 4.1% (vitamin B6) to 19.5% (folic acid). The low SES group had significantly poorer status (p ≤ 0.04) of most vitamins, including the B vitamins (i.e., folic acid, B12 and B6) as well as multivitamin deficiencies (p ≤ 0.02). Low SES was independently associated with decreased folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and vitamin A serum concentrations (p ≤ 0.03 for all). Diet quality was found to partially mediate the association between SES, and folic acid (39.1%), vitamin B6 (37.1%) and vitamin B12 (37.2%)(P ≤ 0.03). Conclusions Low SES is a risk factor for suboptimal nutritional status. The association between SES and nutritional status can be partially explained by diet quality, suggesting that policy makers can mitigate socioeconomic inequality in nutritional status by improving diet quality among elderly. Key messages Revealed that low SES was a risk factor for a suboptimal nutritional status among the elderly and a possible self-reinforcing trap has formed which causes low SES and hidden hunger to persist. Highlighted the importance of diet quality in socioeconomically patterned health disparities and indicating the need for SES-tailored public health strategies.

Age, intellectual functions and activity contributions to elderly nutritional status

This research aimed to examine contribution of age, mental and activity to the status of elderly nutrition. The research conducted in Boyolali, Indonesia in December 2019-January 2020. This type of research is quantitative with a cross sectional approach; determination of sampling with purposive random sampling employed 70 respondents. Data analysis was using Path Analysis with linear regression rate of significance is 0.05.The results showed that contributions of the age, intellectual functions and simultaneous activities that directly affect the nutritional status of R 2 square =0.821 =0.674 or 67% while the remaining 33% are contributed from other variables. The amount of simultaneous age and intellectual functions contributions that directly affect elderly activities is R 2 square =0.0327 or 3.27%, the remaining 96.73% is influenced by other factors. Indirect contributions of age through activity to the status of elderly nutrition and there is direct contribution of elderly intellectual functions condition through activity to the status of elderly nutrition. Nutritional Status of Elderly in Urban and Rural North Sumatera, Indonesia

One measure of the progress of a nation is the expectancy of inhabitants, especially for the elderly. One of the primary efforts made for the elderly to achieve the quality of life and to remain reasonable is by eating nutritious and diverse foods as well as maintaining nutritional status in a balance condition. The fulfillment of nutritional needs can help in the process of adapting or adjusting to the changes they experienced and can maintain the continuity of body cell changes so that they can prolong life. Generally, support and attention from family members are needed by the elderly, especially in their food consumption. This research applied a qualitative method with a cross-sectional design. This research was conducted in Titi Kuning Village (representing urban areas) and in Ranto Baek Village (representing rural areas). Sampling was carried out using inclusion criteria with the criteria, not dementia, not lying sick, and being able to stretch both hands. Total sampling used in this study, 108 people from the village of Ranto Baek, and 438 people from Titi Kuning village became the sample of this research. As a result of the frequency distribution of urban and rural elder's knowledge about nutritional needs, most urban participants have good knowledge; totally, 251 participants (57.3%) and rural participants have sufficient knowledge, a total of 44 participants (40.7%). The results of the frequency distribution of the urban and rural elderly on eating patterns indicated that both urban and rural participants have a good eating pattern total 282 (64.4%) for urban participants and 85 (77%) for rural participants. In addition, frequency distribution results of the nutritional status of urban and rural elders show that many urban participants have good nutritional status, i.e., 213 (48.6%) and rural participants have heavy weight-loss nutritional status as many as 61 participants (58%). This study found that the knowledge, eating pattern, and nutritional status of participants in the city all were good, whereas the knowledge of the participants in the village was sufficient; the nutritional status was a heavyweight loss, yet the eating pattern was good. The difference between rural and urban communities is due to the influence of participants' insight, the neighborhood, the mass media, and the information available. The results of this study can be a reference for the initial material to conduct further research related to the regulation of balanced nutrition for the elderly.

Self-perceived general health among community-dwelling Portuguese older adults: do men and women differ?

AbstractEvidence on how gender intersects with relevant social constructs in later phases of life is scarce. This investigation examined gender inequalities in perceived health status (self-perceived general health; SPGH) by Portuguese elderly community-dwellers while considering psycho-social and socio-demographic determinants. This study used data from a representative sample of community-dwellers aged ≥65 years (N = 920), who were enrolled in the Portuguese Elderly Nutritional Status Surveillance System (PEN-3S) project. Associations between SPGH and socio-demographic and psycho-social variables, functionality and self-reported morbidity were tested; indirect effects of relevant predictors on SPGH were also tested using a bootstrap method. Gender inequalities in health were found: women significantly rated their health worse than men; overall, participants rated their health as fair. Education, functional status, depression symptoms and self-reported morbidity significantly predicted SPGH among women, whereas only the latter two were associated with SPGH among men. For both genders, depression was the strongest predictor of SPGH. Mediation analyses detected indirect effects of cognitive function and loneliness feelings on SPGH among older adults. Results herein provide insights on the predictive role of psycho-social variables on SPGH and support the need for considering the context when addressing the correlates of SPGH among Portuguese older adults. Altogether, these findings might support cost-effective interventions targeting the most vulnerable groups of the population to inequalities in health and its predictors.

Systems Analysis of Food Service Management and Correlations of Food Acceptance, Food Intake with Nutritional Status of Elderly

Elderly in Indonesia who lived in urban areas, especially those living in institutions that were in malnutrition is 28.3% weight less, weight 6.7%, obesity 3.4% and ideal weight 42.4%. The purpose of this study was to analyze the system of food management, acceptance power, food intake against elderly nutritional status in social institution Tresna Werdha Budi Mulia 01 Cipayung. The type of research used in this research was Observational with Cross-Sectional approach. Population in this research was all elderly in Social House Tresna Werdha Budi Mulia 01 Cipayung. Sampling in this study was taken using Purposive Sampling method, with a total sample of 31 people. The data analysis was descriptive analysis, univariate and bivariate analysis using Chi-Square statistical test. The results showed that there was a relationship between food acceptance and nutritional status of the elderly and there was also a relationship between food intake with nutritional status of the elderly. Is mini-nutritional assessment a reliable tool in detecting malnutrition in elderly with body weight excess?

The rising proportion of elderly population in high-income societies has resulted in increasing number of subjects with chronic disabling diseases and nutritional deficiency. Elderly's nutritional status is usually assessed through the mini-nutritional assessment (MNA®). However, its effectiveness may be influenced by weight excess or obesity. We tested the performance of MNA® questionnaire in subjects aged ≥ 65years from Northern Sardinia, Italy, according to overweight/obesity, and we tried to identify the factors associated with malnutrition. A modified version of MNA® (mMNA) test, not including BMI, was compared with the conventional MNA® (cMNA) test, and the overall test performance was assessed by calculating sensitivity, specificity and accuracy. In addition, indexes of cognitive health, disability, comorbidity and polypharmacy were compared between patients with concordant and discordant MNA tests. cMNA® sensitivity, specificity and accuracy were 67%, 99% and 84% compared with the mMNA test, due to malnourished patients misclassified as normal because of excess weight. Predictors of malnutrition were: depression (p < 0.0001), disability (p < 0.0001) and polypharmacy (p < 0.0001). Interestingly, the average scores of the "global", "subjective" and "dietary" components of the cMNA®, were significantly lower compared with the corresponding scores of the mMNA. Excess of weight, a condition progressively rising in the elderly population, may reduce the performance of cMNA® test in detecting malnutrition. Level III, case‒control analytic study.

GAMBARAN STATUS GIZI PADA LANJUT USIA DI PANTI WREDHA WANA SRAYA DENPASAR

This study aims to determine the description of nutritional status in the elderly at Panti Wredha Wana Sraya Denpasar. The research method used was an observational description with a sample of 29 respondents. Data collection by interview and anthropometric measurement. The collected data was analyzed descriptively and presented in the form of frequency distribution regarding the nutritional status of the elderly. The results of data analysis showed that the majority of respondents were female (79%). Based on the age group, most of the elderly in the Advanced Old / Old (75-90 years) category were 58.6%. As many as 100% of elderly men have a normal abdominal circumference, while in women only 69.6%. The results of the Body Mask Indeks calculation showed that 55.2% of the elderly in the normal weight category. The shortage of weight in the heavy category is 10.3%, and the category of mild weight deficiency is 17.2%. The nutritional status of the elderly at Panti Wredha Wana Sraya Denpasar is mostly in the normal category, but there are still elderly who lack weight in the heavy category. It is expected that there will be continuous and consistent monitoring of elderly nutritional status at Panti Wredha Wana Sraya Denpasar so that the elderly nutritional status can be controlled.

HUBUNGAN KECENDERUNGAN DEPRESI DENGAN STATUS GIZI PADA LANSIA DI UPTD GRIYA WERDHA SURABAYA&lt;br&gt;&lt;i&gt;[Correlation of Depression Tendency and Nutritional Status of Elderly in UPTD Griya Werdha Surabaya]&lt;/i&gt;

Malnutrition is one of the causes of health problems in the elderly. Nutritional status of the elderly can be affected by many factors, such as food intake, comorbidities, drugs consumption, physical activity, and depression. Depression status has a relationship with the nutritional status of the elderly by influencing the intake of the elderly. The purpose of this study was analyze the correlation and the risk of depression tendency with elderly nutritional status at UPTD Griya Werdha Surabaya. This study was a case-control design. The number of respondents were 30 elderly consist of 15 elderly in each case and control groups. The case group was elderly who had MNA score &lt;24 points, while the control group was elderly who had MNA score of ≥24 points. Depression were measured by Short Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Spearman correlation test was used to analyze the data. Most of the elderly do not experience depression (GDS&lt;5). There was a correlation between depression with nutritional status of the elderly (p=0.007). Depression elderly were 9.75 times more likely to malnourished than nutritional status [OR=9.75, 95% CI =`1.63 (1.45-1.81)]. Nutritional status was correlated with the tendency of depression in the elderly. It is necessary to increase more activities at the UPTD Griya Werdha Surabaya to reduce the risk of depression among elderly.

Misclassification of Nutrition Status among Elderly Based on Combination of Stature Predictor

The combination of arm span and knee height as the stature predictors on elderly was arranged to obtained the most precise and accurate prediction of actual height. However, there was not much research that calculated prediction errors. This study aimed to measure the size of the misclassification of elderly nutritional status which calculated by predictive combination regression model. The study was an observational study with cross-sectional design. The study population was 60–69 years old men and women in Wonogiri District, Central Java. The sample size were 65 men and 71 women, which were chosen purposively in the community. Anthropometric measurements on knee height and arm span and the actual height were done by standardize technique. Data of BMI were analysed using Friedman pos hoc Wilcoxon test then clasified to nutrition status to calculated sensitivity and specificity. Among the men subjects, the overweight and underweight status using BMI were overestimate by 8.3% and 12.5%, respectively. Among the women subjects, overestimate also occurred on underweight by 12.5%. In all respondents, underestimation of underweight was 7.2% and overestimation in the normal nutritional status was 3.7%. It was concluded that some misclassification of BMI, by predicted height among elderly based with combination regression model was found.

Education, Knowledge and Nutritional Status of Elderly in Elderly Integrated Service Post Working Area of Bentiring Community Health Center Bengkulu

This study was based on the still high nutrient deficiency of elderly in the working area of Bentiring Community Health Center Bengkulu. This study aimed to study the relationship between education and knowledge with nutritional status of elderly in Elderly Integrated Service Post working area of Bentiring Community Health Center Bengkulu. The research type was Analytical Survey and the desain of research was Cross Sectional. The population of this study was all elderly who visited Elderly Integrated Service Post in the working area of Bentiring Community Health Center Bengkulu in January to April 2017 which amounted to 52 elderly. Sampling technique in this research used Total Sampling. The data collected in this study used primary data and secondary data with data analysis technique done by univariate and bivariate analysis with Chi-Square test (c²) through SPSS 16 program. The result of this research were : from 52 elderly, there were 35 elderly (67,3%) with basic education, 27 elderly (51,9%) who had less knowledge, 20 elderly (38,5%) had less nutritional status, there was significant relationship between education with nutritional status of elderly with medium category, and there was a significant relationship between knowledge with nutritional status of elderly with close category. It was expected to Bentiring Community Health Center Bengkulu to improve health services to the elderly by providing nutrition education and medical examination for elderly.
