The variations of ENSO teleconnections during the Last Interglacial based on PMIP4 simulations

How the remote influences of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) may vary in a warmer future remains a hot topic but still elusive. Based on the outputs from the Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project Phase 4, here we investigated the variations of ENSO teleconnections in boreal winter during the Last Interglacial (LIG), which shares large similarities with the projected climatic features in the 21st century. Our results suggested that the ENSO-temperature teleconnections on average weakened by ∼13.4% during the LIG relative to the preindustrial, whereas the response of precipitation amplified by ∼5.0%. However, there are large regional discrepancies in the variations of ENSO teleconnections in terms of the sign and amplitude. For example, we observed significant ENSO-temperature relationship changes at the high latitudes during the LIG, with a depressed linkage over northern North America but enhanced linkage over the high latitudes of Eurasia. The most profound change in ENSO-precipitation teleconnection occurred over the tropics during the LIG, characterized by a weaker response over the equatorial Pacific Ocean whereas a stronger response over the Maritime Continent and adjacent oceans. Regarding atmospheric circulations, we found that the ENSO-driven Walker Circulations over the Pacific and the Indian Ocean shifted westward during the LIG, whereas the descending branch of the ENSO-driven Atlantic Walker Circulation shifted eastward. Our results provide a model-based scenario for the variations of ENSO teleconnections during the LIG, but the underlying mechanisms deserve further investigation in the future.

The role of storm‐track dynamics in the intraseasonal variability of the winter ENSO teleconnection to the North Atlantic

AbstractThe response of the North Atlantic large‐scale circulation to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) exhibits distinct differences between early (November–December) and late (January–February) winter. However, the reasons for this are unclear, particularly regarding the early winter response. Here we examine the role of storm‐track dynamics in influencing the intraseasonal variability of the ENSO teleconnection to the North Atlantic. During late winter there a broad weakening of the eddy heat flux upstream of the North Atlantic storm track during the El Niño phase, which is associated with a broad southward jet shift across North America and the North Atlantic. The late winter response is reinforced by synoptic eddies through enhanced cyclonic wave breaking, consistent with previous studies. However, a stronger teleconnection occurs during early winter. There are modest changes in the North Atlantic eddy heat flux, but strong changes in the upper‐level storm track associated with ENSO, with increased anticyclonic wave breaking during El Niño reinforcing the jet across the central North Atlantic. During early winter there are less frequent northern eddy‐driven jet occurrences in El Niño years and more frequent northern eddy‐driven jet occurrences in La Niña years. These poleward North Atlantic jet excursions typically follow peaks in the eddy heat flux; however, in El Niño years this relationship breaks down and the jet does not transition to the northern position as frequently, despite no clear changes in the upstream eddy heat flux. Composite analysis reveals that precursor storm‐track anomalies upstream over the eastern North Pacific/North America are important in suppressing the poleward jet excursions. These precursors map onto the seasonal mean North Pacific storm‐track anomalies during El Niño. Measured across all years, there is a clear relationship between the mean early winter eastern North Pacific storm‐track activity and eastern North Atlantic eddy‐driven jet, which can explain the early winter ENSO teleconnection to the North Atlantic.

Impact of ENSO and trends on the distribution of North American wintertime daily temperature

Abstract The effect of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnection and climate change trends on observed North American wintertime daily 2-m temperature is investigated for 1960–2022 with a quantile regression model, which represents the variability of the full distribution of daily temperature, including extremes and changes in spread. Climate change trends are included as a predictor in the regression model to avoid the potentially confounding effect on ENSO teleconnections. Based on prior evidence of asymmetric impacts from El Niño and La Niña, the ENSO response is taken to be piecewise linear, and the regression model contains separate predictors for warm and cool ENSO. The relationship between these predictors and shifts in median, interquartile range, skewness, and kurtosis of daily 2-m temperature are summarized through Legendre polynomials. Warm ENSO conditions result in significant warming shifts in the median and contraction of the interquartile range in central-northern North America, while no opposite effect is found for cool ENSO conditions in this region. In the southern U.S., cool ENSO conditions produce a warming shift in the median, while warm ENSO has little impact on the median, but contracts the interquartile range. Climate change trends are present as a near-uniform warming in the median and across quantiles and have no discernable impact on interquartile range or higher-order moments. Trends and ENSO together explain a substantial fraction of the interannual variability of daily temperature distribution shifts across much of North America and, to a lesser extent, changes of the interquartile range.

Seasonal Reversal of ENSO Impacts on SST in the East China Sea–Kuroshio Region

Abstract Sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the East China Sea–Kuroshio (EK) region has important implications for the surrounding weather, climate, and marine ecology. The year-to-year variations of the EK SST are expectedly linked to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the predominant predictability source of seasonal-to-interannual climate variability. Surprisingly, no significant SST signal is observed in the EK region when focusing on the ENSO autumn–winter season with the persistent and pronounced SST anomalies in the tropical Pacific. We find that a remarkable seasonal reversal appears in the ENSO–EK SST connection, shifting from a negative relationship in autumn [Aug(0)–Oct(0)] to a positive relationship in winter [Dec(0)–Feb(1)]. This reversal is mainly attributed to the seasonally varying ENSO-associated western North Pacific (WNP) atmospheric circulation patterns. During ENSO autumns, the anomalous WNP anticyclone is confined south of 20°N, which is accompanied with cyclonic circulation anomalies in the EK region. The associated anomalous northerly wind tends to enhance the background northerly wind, thereby facilitating the local SST cooling mainly via the wind–evaporation–SST effect. In the subsequent winter, the ENSO-related WNP anticyclonic anomalies intensify and extend toward the EK region. Consequently, the weakened background northerly wind induced by southerly wind anomalies leads to the increase of downward latent and sensible heat flux in the EK region, fostering the local SST warming. The observed seasonal reversal of ENSO impacts can be evidenced by the tropical Pacific pacemaker experiments, emphasizing the importance of seasonally modulated ENSO teleconnection and holding implications for the local SST climate prediction.

A Relative Sea Surface Temperature Index for Classifying ENSO Events in a Changing Climate

Abstract El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is often characterized through the use of sea surface temperature (SST) departures from their climatological values, as in the Niño-3.4 index. However, this approach is problematic in a changing climate when the climatology itself is varying. To address this issue, van Oldenborgh et al. proposed a relative Niño-3.4 SST index, which subtracts the tropical mean SST anomaly from the Niño-3.4 index and multiplies by a scaling factor. We extend their work by providing a simplified calculation procedure for the scaling factor, and confirm that the relative index demonstrates reduced sensitivity to climate change and multidecadal variability. In particular, we show in three observational SST datasets that the relative index provides a more consistent classification of historical El Niño and La Niña oceanic conditions that is more robust across climatological periods compared to the nonrelative index. Forecast skill of the relative Niño-3.4 index in the North American Multimodel Ensemble (NMME) and ACCESS-S2 is slightly reduced for targets during the first half of the year because subtracting the tropical mean removes a source of additional skill. For targets in the second half of the year, the relative and nonrelative indices are equally skillful. Observed ENSO teleconnections in 200-hPa geopotential height and precipitation during key seasons are sharper and explain more variability over Australia and the contiguous United States when computed with the relative index. Overall, the relative Niño-3.4 index provides a more robust option for real-time monitoring and forecasting ENSO in a changing climate. Significance Statement The goal of this study is to further explore a relative sea surface temperature index for monitoring and prediction of El Niño–Southern Oscillation. Sea surface temperature indices are typically computed as a difference from a 30-yr climatological average, and El Niño and La Niña events occur when values exceed a certain threshold. This method is suitable when the climate is stationary. However, because of climate change and other lower-frequency variations, historical El Niño and La Niña events are reclassified depending on which climatological period is selected. A relative index is investigated to ameliorate this problem.

A distinct and reproducible teleconnection pattern over North America during extreme El Niño events

El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnections are an important predictability source for extratropical seasonal climate forecasts. Previous studies suggest that the ENSO teleconnection pattern depends on the ENSO phase (El Niño vs. La Niña) and/or Sea Surface Temperature (SST) pattern (central Pacific vs. eastern Pacific El Niño events). Observations and ensemble simulations with the CNRM-CM6.1 atmospheric general circulation model indicate that only extreme El Niño events (e.g. 1982–1983, 1997–1998, 2015–2016) display a statistically significant eastward shift relative to the well-known Pacific-North American teleconnection pattern that occurs during both central and eastern Pacific moderate El Niño or during La Niña. This specific teleconnection pattern emerges when equatorial SST anomalies are both eastward-shifted and sufficiently large to exceed the deep atmospheric convection threshold over most of the eastern Pacific, resulting in a basin-wide reorganization of tropospheric heat sources. It yields> 0.5 std wet conditions over Western United States (74% likelihood) as well as> 0.5 std warm anomalies over Canada and the Northern United States (71% likelihood), with more consistency across events and ensemble members than for any other El Niño or La Niña type. These findings hold important implications for the seasonal forecasting of El Niño’s impacts on the North American climate.

Investigating the Strength and Variability of El Niño–Southern Oscillation Teleconnections to Hydroclimate and Maize Yields in Southern and East Africa

Abstract The state of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is critical for seasonal climate forecasts, but recent events diverged substantially from expectations in many regions, including sub-Saharan Africa where seasonal forecasts are critical tools for addressing food security. Here, we evaluate 39 years (1982–2020) of data on hydroclimate, leaf area index, and maize yields to investigate the strength of ENSO teleconnections in southern and East Africa. Teleconnections to precipitation, soil moisture, and leaf area index are generally stronger during ENSO phases that cause drought conditions (El Niño in southern Africa and La Niña in East Africa), with seasonality that aligns well with the maize growing seasons. Within maize growing areas, however, ENSO teleconnections to hydroclimate and vegetation are generally weaker compared to the broader geographic regions, especially in East Africa. There is also little evidence that the magnitude of the ENSO event affects the hydroclimate or vegetation response in these maize regions. Maize yields in Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, and Zimbabwe all correlate significantly with hydroclimate and leaf area index, with South Africa and Zimbabwe showing the strongest and most consistent yield responses to ENSO events. Our results highlight the chain of causality from El Niño and La Niña forcing of regional anomalies in hydroclimate to vegetation health and maize yields in southern and East Africa. The large spread across individual ENSO events, however, underscores the limitations of this climate mode for seasonal climate prediction in the region, and the importance of finding additional sources of skill for improving climate and yield forecasts.

Recent Strengthening of the ENSO Influence on the Early Winter East Atlantic Pattern

Previous studies have demonstrated that the influence of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the Euro-Atlantic atmospheric circulation varies considerably during the boreal winter. Compared to the late winter (January–March) relationship, the early winter (November–December) teleconnection is more uncertain and less understood. In this paper, we revisited this early winter regional ENSO teleconnection using the Hadley Centre Global Sea Ice and Sea Surface Temperature (HadISST) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) fifth generation reanalysis (ERA5) datasets for the period 1979–2022. It was found that the signal projected well onto the second dominant mode of Euro-Atlantic atmospheric variability, the East Atlantic Pattern (EAP), rather than the previously mentioned North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). This influence is associated with ENSO-induced dipolar convection anomalies in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea (GMCA), which leads to an EAP via exciting Rossby waves propagating northward into the North Atlantic. We further revealed that this ENSO–EAP teleconnection underwent a pronounced interdecadal strengthening around the late 1990s. Prior to the late 1990s, the convective response to ENSO in the GMCA was weak. The atmospheric responses over the Euro-Atlantic were mainly driven by the ENSO-induced convective forcing in the tropical Indian Ocean, which favors an NAO-like pattern. In contrast, since the late 1990s, ENSO has induced stronger precipitation anomalies in the GMCA, which exert a dominant influence on the Euro-Atlantic atmospheric circulation and produce an EAP. These results have useful implications for the further understanding of ENSO-related early winter atmospheric and climate variability in the Euro-Atlantic region.

Projected ENSO teleconnection on the Southeast Asian climate under global warming

Given the importance of El Niño–Southern oscillation (ENSO) teleconnection on the Southeast Asia (SEA) climate, the ENSO-induced precipitation and near-surface air temperature anomalies over SEA and its twenty sub-regions are compared between historical (1985–2014) and future (2070–2099) simulations using 30 models from Phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). Future projections suggest that the Philippines, Malay Peninsula, most of the Maritime Continent, and southern Indochina experience reduced (increased) precipitation in the future El Niño (La Niña) summer. Then, during autumn, amplification of ENSO-precipitation teleconnection is projected in the Borneo, Malay Peninsula, and northern Vietnam, raising flood concerns in these sub-regions in future La Niña autumn. During winter, projected ENSO-driven negative anomalies continue intensifying and shifting northeastward, resulting in drier (wetter) conditions for the Philippines and surrounding areas in future El Niño (La Niña). Conversely, a southeastward shift of ENSO-driven precipitation anomalies is projected in the following spring, leading to dampening (an amplification) of teleconnection over the western (eastern) part of SEA. Regarding near-surface air temperature, a ‘land-sea contrast’ pattern is seen, in which intensified ENSO-driven positive (negative) anomalies are projected over land (ocean). At the sub-region scale, robust amplifications in the ENSO teleconnection are mainly observed when only considering the land temperature. The most noticeable future changes are robust amplification of the ENSO-driven positive temperature anomalies in northern Indochina and Myanmar during winter. These sub-regions typically experience a cooler winter, suggesting that wintertime mean temperature there may be much higher under future El Niño conditions. The projected changes in ENSO-driven precipitation and near-surface air temperature anomalies both appear to scale with the radiative forcing, i.e. a higher radiative forcing corresponds to higher teleconnection changes and more sub-regions of SEA experience robust changes. These results suggest that significant ENSO teleconnection changes can be mitigated by minimizing future warming.

Improved modeling of Congo's hydrology for floods and droughts analysis and ENSO teleconnections

Study regionThe Congo River basin (CRB), the world's second-largest river system, is subject to extreme hydrological events that strongly impact its ecosystems and population. Study focusHere we present an improved 40-year (1981–2020) hydrological reanalysis of daily CRB discharge and analyze the spatiotemporal dynamics of recent major CRB floods and droughts, and their teleconnection with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the dominant driver of tropical precipitation. We employ a large-scale hydrologic-hydrodynamic model (MGB) with lake storage dynamics representation and a data assimilation (DA) technique using in-situ and remote sensing observations. New Hydrological InsightsThe MGB model demonstrates satisfactory performance, with Kling-Gupta efficiency metric of 0.84 and 0.71 for calibration and validation, respectively. Incorporating lake representation substantially enhances simulations, increasing the Pearson correlation coefficient from 0.3 to 0.63. Additionally, DA yields a ∼13% reduction in discharge errors via cross-validation. We find that the 1997–1998 flood impacting the south and central CRB is statistically linked to a major El Niño event during that period. However, no such association is found for the 2019–2020 flood. Severe droughts in 1983–1984 and 2011–2012, affecting northern and southern CRB respectively, exhibit strong correlation with preceding El Niño and La Niña events, with a ∼10–12 months lag. This study advances understanding of the intricate interplay between spatiotemporal hydrological variability in CRB and large-scale climate phenomena like ENSO.

Effect of global and regional SST biases on the East Asian Summer Monsoon in the MetUM GA7 and GC3 configurations

Climate-length experiments of the Met Office Unified Model Global Atmosphere 7.0 (GA7) and Global Coupled 3.0 (GC3) configurations are evaluated against observations and reanalyses for the simulation of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). The results show systematic model biases, such as overestimated rainfall over southern China and underestimated rainfall over northern China, suggesting a monsoon that does not penetrate northward enough. We evaluate the effects on the EASM of regional errors in sea-surface temperature (SST) conditions in three regions: the Pacific, the Indian, and the Atlantic Oceans. The global SST biases in GC3 configuration substantially shift the EASM seasonal cycle: a late northward progression of the EASM in the early/mid-monsoon season, and an early retreat of the monsoon that also reduces rainfall over most of northern China. The EASM seasonal rainfall bias in the EASM region is linked to changes in the locations and strength of the western North Pacific subtropical high, which is associated with biases in local evaporation and moisture transport towards South China. GC3 biases in the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) teleconnection pathways also influence the EASM biases. GC3 biases weaken the ENSO teleconnection to the EASM and cause a strong dry bias in southeast China during developing El Niño.

A review of ENSO teleconnections at present and under future global warming

AbstractThe El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a major component of the Earth's climate that largely influences global climate variability through long‐distance teleconnections. Rossby wave trains emerging from the tropical convection and their propagation into extratropical regions are the key mechanism for tropical and extratropical teleconnections. Despite significant progress in the understanding of ENSO teleconnections over the recent past decades, several important issues have remained to be addressed. The global atmospheric teleconnections of ENSO vary substantially with the seasonal cycle, on the decadal timescale, and under the influence of global warming. It is essential to separate the internal decadal variability of ENSO teleconnections from changes caused by the external forcing of global warming. However, the post‐satellite observations are not long enough to compose a large number of ENSO events to distinguish the decadal variability of ENSO teleconnections from changes related to increasing greenhouse concentrations. The current climate models also suffer from common biases, such that they are unable to properly reproduce both the tropical mean state and some features of ENSO. Nevertheless, observational records can be extended back in time via reconstruction methods. Efforts have also already been made to remove some main common biases of climate models and to improve the representation of ENSO characteristics. The Role of Nonlinear Energy Advection in Forming Asymmetric Structure of ENSO Teleconnections Over the North Pacific and North America

AbstractIn boreal winter, the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO)‐induced Pacific‐North American (PNA) teleconnection pattern is farther westward during La Niña relative to that in El Niño, causing discernible distinct climate implications. However, there has been a lack of consensus regarding the underlying mechanism driving this asymmetric structure. This study highlights the contribution of nonlinear kinetic energy advection (nKA) to this asymmetry. The zonally symmetric responses to ENSO, specifically the anomalies in zonal mean zonal flow, generate opposing nKA patterns by advecting anomalous eddy kinetic energy in the North Pacific, which leads to the shift of the PNA teleconnection pattern. In addition to nKA, transient eddy activities responded to changes of baroclinicity help maintain the asymmetry through a feedback effect. These findings underscore the importance of considering extratropical factors, such as nonlinear energy processes and synoptic‐scale transient eddies, in understanding the mechanism responsible for the asymmetric structure of the PNA teleconnection pattern.

Southern Hemisphere Storm Tracks and Large-Scale Variability: What Do the Latest Reanalyses Say?

Abstract In this study, we explore linkages between the monthly mean 500 hPa height field (Z500) and its high-frequency variability over 2–8-day periods, a proxy for Southern Hemisphere storm track activity. We apply maximum covariance analysis to identify leading modes of covariability between the Z500 and high-frequency variance anomalies on monthly and submonthly time scales, using two reanalysis products. We also calculate covariance with indices of large-scale variability [Southern Annular Mode (SAM), El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and zonal wave 3 (ZW3)]. We find large-scale circulation patterns emerge as prominent modes of covariability, particularly SAM and ENSO, accounting for 11.1% and 7.8% of covariability on the monthly scale, respectively. The seasonal cycle plays a prominent role in explaining variability in both SAM and ENSO interactions with the storm track. We find that despite a broadly linear response, both SAM and ENSO teleconnections present additional complexities and nonlinearities. Despite strong ZW3 signals in the mean height field, its influence on the high-frequency variance field remains unclear. We conclude the mean height field is most likely strongly linked with high-frequency variance, but interference from other influences may lead to an inconsistent response. We note both fields have an apparent hemispheric response to the SAM, but ENSO has a more regional response and ZW3 a relatively incoherent response. This suggests ENSO and ZW3 patterns depend less on feedbacks between the storm track and the mean height field than the SAM.

ENSO statistics, teleconnections, and atmosphere–ocean coupling in the Taiwan Earth System Model version 1

Abstract. This study provides an overview of the fundamental statistics and features of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the historical simulations of the Taiwan Earth System Model version 1 (TaiESM1). Compared with observations, TaiESM1 can reproduce the fundamental features of observed ENSO signals, including seasonal phasing, thermocline coupling with winds, and atmospheric teleconnection during El Niño events. However, its ENSO response is approximately 2 times stronger than observed in the spectrum, resulting in powerful teleconnection signals. The composite of El Niño events shows a strong westerly anomaly extending fast to the eastern Pacific in the initial stage in March, April, and May, initiating a warm sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) there. This warm SSTA is maintained through September, October, and November (SON) and gradually diminishes after peaking in December. Analysis of wind stress–SST and heat flux–SST coupling indicates that biased positive SST–shortwave feedback significantly contributes to the strong warm anomaly over the eastern Pacific, especially in SON. Our analysis demonstrates TaiESM1's capability to simulate ENSO – a significant tropical climate variation on interannual scales with strong global impacts – and provides insights into mechanisms in TaiESM1 related to ENSO biases, laying the foundation for future model development to reduce uncertainties in TaiESM1 and climate models in general.

Persistent effect of El Niño on global economic growth.

The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) shapes extreme weather globally, causing myriad socioeconomic impacts, but whether economies recover from ENSO events and how anthropogenic changes to ENSO will affect the global economy are unknown. Here we show that El Niño persistently reduces country-level economic growth; we attribute $4.1 trillion and $5.7 trillion in global income losses to the 1982-83 and 1997-98 El Niño events, respectively. In an emissions scenario consistent with current mitigation pledges, increased ENSO amplitude and teleconnections from warming are projected to cause $84 trillion in 21st-century economic losses, but these effects are shaped by stochastic variation in the sequence of El Niño and La Niña events. Our results highlight the sensitivity of the economy to climate variability independent of warming and the potential for future losses due to anthropogenic intensification of such variability.

Diverse skill of seasonal dynamical models in forecasting South Asian monsoon precipitation and the influence of ENSO and IOD

The South Asia Seasonal Climate Outlook Forum (SASCOF) issues seasonal tercile precipitation forecasts to provide advance warning of anomalously dry or wet monsoon seasons in South Asia. To increase objectivity of the SASCOF seasonal outlook, the World Meteorological Organisation recommends using a multi-model ensemble combining the most skilful dynamical seasonal models for the region. We assess the skill of 12 dynamical models at forecasting seasonal precipitation totals for 1993–2016 for the southwest (June–July–August–September) and northeast (October–November–December) monsoon seasons at regional and national levels for Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan, using identical forecast periods, hindcast initialisation months and domain used at the SASCOF. All models demonstrate positive skill when regionally-averaged, especially for the southwest monsoon season, noting considerable spatial differences. Models exhibit highest skill where correlation between observed precipitation and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is highest, e.g., central/north India and Nepal during the southwest monsoon, and Afghanistan and north Pakistan during the northeast monsoon. Model skill is especially low in northwest India and northeast of South Asia during the southwest monsoon, e.g., Bangladesh (despite high precipitation totals) coinciding with a weak ENSO teleconnection. The Indian Ocean Dipole teleconnection is less pronounced in the southwest monsoon season, whereas the spatial pattern for the northeast monsoon closely resembles that of ENSO. Due to high variability in model skill, we recommend basing the SASCOF forecast on a multi-model ensemble of all models but discounting poorly performing models at the national level.

Sub‐Seasonal Variability of ENSO Teleconnections in Western North America and Its Prediction Skill

AbstractThe El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) significantly affects the wintertime surface climate in western North America (WNA) via the Pacific/North American‐like teleconnection pattern. Here, we show that the ENSO teleconnections over the WNA have significant sub‐seasonal variation despite the persistence of ENSO‐related tropical sea surface temperature anomalies throughout the entire winter. The ENSO–WNA teleconnections become substantially weakened in mid‐winter, considerably weaker than those in early and late winter. This mid‐winter weakening of the ENSO–WNA teleconnections is attributable to the convection over the equatorial Indian Ocean. In mid‐December of El Niño winters, the anomalously‐enhanced convection develops over the equatorial Indian Ocean and excites the teleconnection pattern with a 2‐week time lag. This teleconnection largely opposes the Pacific/North American‐like teleconnection pattern that is induced by anomalous convection over the equatorial central Pacific. Such sub‐seasonal variation of ENSO teleconnections is poorly predicted by multi‐model hindcasts, affecting the mid‐latitude prediction skill. It particularly results in a poorer prediction skill of WNA surface air temperature in mid‐winter than in late winter. This result highlights a need to better simulate the ENSO‐related tropical convection and the associated teleconnections in the model to improve the long‐lead prediction of the WNA surface climate.

Underpredicted ENSO Teleconnections in Seasonal Forecasts

AbstractThe El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influences climate variability across the globe. ENSO is highly predictable on seasonal timescales and therefore its teleconnections are a source of extratropical forecast skill. To fully harness this predictability, teleconnections must be represented accurately in seasonal forecasts. We find that a multimodel ensemble from five seasonal forecast systems can successfully capture the spatial structure of the late winter (JFM) El Niño teleconnection to the North Atlantic via North America, but the simulated amplitude is half of that observed. We find that weak amplitude teleconnections exist in all five models throughout the troposphere, and that the La Niña teleconnection is also weak. We find evidence that tropical forcing of the El Niño teleconnection is not underestimated and instead, deficiencies are likely to emerge in the extratropics. We investigate the impact of underestimated teleconnection strength on North Atlantic winter predictability, including its relevance to the signal‐to‐noise paradox.

ENSO teleconnections in terms of non-NAO and NAO atmospheric variability

The validity of the long-held understanding or assumption that El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has a remote influence on the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) in the January–February–March (JFM) months has been questioned recently. We examine this claim further using atmospheric data filtered to separate the variability orthogonal and parallel to NAO. This decomposition of the atmospheric fields is based on the Principal Component/Empirical Orthogonal Function method whereby the leading mode of the sea-level pressure in the North Atlantic sector is recognised as the NAO, while the remaining variability is orthogonal (unrelated) to NAO. Composite analyses indicate that ENSO has statistically significant links with both the non-NAO and NAO variability at various atmospheric levels. Additional bootstrap tests carried out to quantify the uncertainty and statistical significance confirm these relationships. Consistent with previous studies, we find that an ENSO teleconnection in the NAO-related variability is characterised by lower-stratospheric eddy heat flux anomalies (related to the vertical propagation of planetary waves) which appear in November–December and strengthen through JFM. Under El Niño (La Niña), there is constructive (destructive) interference of anomalous eddy heat flux with the climatological pattern, enhancing (reducing) fluxes over the northern Pacific and Barents Sea areas. We further show that the teleconnection of extreme El Niño is essentially a non-NAO phenomenon. Some non-linearity of the teleconnections is suggested, with El Niño including more NAO-related variability than La Niña, but the statistical significance is degraded due to weaker signals and smaller sample sizes after the partitioning. Our findings have implications for the general understanding of the nature of ENSO teleconnections over the North Atlantic, as well as for refining methods to characterise and evaluate them in models.
