Earth Science, Mapping Exhibit at National Archives

An exhibit reflecting the history of exploration and mapping of the United States from the early surveys of he western frontier to examples of modern space age mapping will be on public display from June 20 to October 15,1979, in the National Archives building, Pennsylvania Avenue and Eighth Street, N. W., Washington, D.C.The exhibit, consisting of panels, photographs, original documents, paintings, and maps, is a cooperative effort by the National Archives and the U.S. Geological Survey in recognition of the Survey's centennial year.

The Screening Laboratory of 1980

THE SCREENING LABORATORY OF 1980* RICHARD L. REECE, M.DA The aim of the screening laboratory of 1980 will be to make knowledge productive—to convert results automatically into a form physicians can quickly assimilate and effectively use. In most instances, this form will be a list of diagnostic probabilities. The laboratory's performance in achieving this aim will be the standard by which it is judged. And this aim will influence the automated screening laboratory's organization , its use of the computer, and the clinical pathologists' duties. I shall predict what I think the biochemical screening laboratory of 1980 will be like. Necessarily this vision lacks documentation; it is not, however, without foundation. Over the past 2!4 years our laboratory has sent 110,000 computer unified and interpreted reports to practicing physicians in Minnesota. This article will show these reports to be of fundamental importance in the screening laboratory of the future. Dr. Russell Hobbie, professor of physics at the University of Minnesota, and I have written of our experience with the computer [1-5].1 Reorganizing the Laboratory The screening laboratory of 1980 will have a production-line approach to providing accurate results and to converting these results into a language that clinicians can easily understand. Though the laboratory will use production-line techniques and statistical methods, it will produce clinician-oriented results. The future laboratory will transform abnormal results into a differential diagnosis. It will accomplish this partly through reorganization. Perspectives in Biology and Medicine · Winter 1974 | 227 tion will result from new perception: that the goal of the screening laboratory is to offer diagnostic possibilities or probabilities with every abnormal result or set of abnormal results. To achieve this goal, the laboratory will be split into three major divisions : Receiving, Processing, and Transmitting. Receiving Division People in the Receiving Division will collect, centrifuge, prepare, sort, preserve, identify, and route specimens. They will also organize and enter into the computer information that affects the meaning of laboratory tests. This information will include age, sex, upright or supine posture, drugs being taken by patient, and condition of the specimen—hour and day drawn, degree of lipemia, and presence of hemolysis. Processing Division Members of the Processing Division will be charged with the responsibility of producing accurate, fast, and economical results. They will operate a serum chemical analyzer, capable of doing 50 tests or any combination of those tests; several smaller instruments for measuring Jiighvolume single tests; a hematology analyzer, with the capacity of performing complete blood counts, white cell differentials, platelet and reticulocyte counts, sedimentation rates, and the major coagulation tests; an automated instrument for measuring materials for radioactive or radioimmunoassay techniques; and a small multitest urine analyzer. Results from all of these instruments will be capable of being unified into one common report. Most of the division's energies will be devoted to producing a single large profile that measures most measurable functions of most organ systems. In essence, this profile will give an integrated comprehensive picture of the patient's metabolism. There will also be time devoted to developing new methods and to building profiles to pursue diagnostic leads suggested by the large profile. Transmitting Division By 1980 the Transmitting Division will be growing rapidly. Indeed, it may be the largest branch of the laboratory. There pathologists, other physicians, scientists, statisticians, pattern-recognition experts, and programmers will congregate to decide how best to provide comprehensive , readable, unified problem-oriented reports that tell a story about the patients' problems. By 1980 physicians will demand such reports, for most of them will have cut their academic teeth on Lawrence Weed's concept of problem-oriented medicine...

Cricket (review)

A man recommending this magazine to me said it was the first high-standard magazine for children since St. Nicholas dwindled away in the 1930's. Having [End Page 229] been reared on St. Nicholas in its great pre-1920 phase, I had some misgivings when beginning to make Cricket's acquaintance. I lost them halfway through. The thing is downright enjoyable. As it happens, research for my own work has recently taken me through a run of St. Nicholas in representative good years. For my money, Cricket assays considerably better—level of quality better sustained, art work handling a wider variety of idioms, editorial imagination expertly eclectic and cordially amusing without too much cuteness, as in the little drawings-with-dialogue at the bottoms of pages in which crickets and assorted fellow insects discuss what goes on in the matter printed above. Comparison must allow for the age levels of Cricket's intended audience not going beyond twelve, I should judge, whereas St. Nicholas aimed at youngsters well into their teens. Ordinarily that difference would have been to Cricket's disadvantage, dooming its content to easy-steps-for-little-feet mawkishness. Actually zest and thump and stimulating reachings toward growth-experience come through on a most gratifying number of pages. Difference in editorial policy is diametric. St. Nicholas relied on previously unpublished material. One reason for Cricket's high quality and a good omen for its future is that most of its content consists of extracts from very good books for children published over the past few decades. Such cream-skimming can be very rewarding, and works out as well here for children as it did in good reading for adults in the old Golden Book magazine of pre-World War II days. A child nibbling at this first Cricket will find friends in T. S. Eliot, Isaac Bashevis Singer . . . and feel them as friends with the same spontaneities as the less augustly renowned but mostly admirable writers of the rest of the content. Another good omen is the harkback to St. Nicholas in "The Cricket League" department asking readers to do stories or poems on . . . well, this month on "anything spooky or scary: ghosts, skeletons, witches, bats . . . hoots, boos, sighs, grins . . . " or drawings in that same mood in any color so long as it's black. The St. Nicholas League of my day was print-proving ground for Edna St. Vincent Millay, Stephen Vincent Benét, Rachel Carson, and so on. Could be this time, too. J. C. Furnas J. C. Concrete Wells at Holland, Michigan

Holland is a city of 14,000 inhabitants, located on the shores of Black Lake, in Ottawa County, Michigan. Black Lake, unfortunately and slanderously so named, is 6 miles long and ' to f mile wide, extending from the city to and connecting with Lake Michigan. The sailing distance from Holland to Chicago is 96 miles. The water supply is derived from wells located in the sand and gravel drift which overlies the clay under the city. The source is rainfall. Developments have been made at three stations, namely, Nineteenth, Twenty-eighth and East Eighth Streets. The first two are located within the city and the third about ' mile east of the city limits. The three stations are equipped with centrifugal pumps driven by electric motors. Power is furnished by the Fifth Street station, owned and operated by the municipality. While Holland has enjoyed a water supply excellent in quality, to provide it in sufficient quantity has always been a problem. The maximum demand for an hour or two has been all out of proportion to the average demand. For example, the average daily pumpage for 1923 was 1,057,000 gallons as compared with the maximum rate of 6,928,000 gallons. The entire output is metered. In 1921, the possibility of additional water supply at the site of the present East Eighth Street station was accepted and ten 5and 6-inch tubular wells were hastily installed on an average spacing of 90 feet and a depth of 40 feet. A temporary suction line was laid along the ground and a shelter house constructed for a pump borrowed from the Twenty-eighth Street station. All the haste was for the purpose of having the additional capacity, 1100 gallons per month, available for the summer load. This work successfully completed, a 4-inch test well was sunk at one end of the line of wells to determine the depth of the sand and gravel.
