The articles by N. M. Verzilin and M. N. Melnikov, published in the journal "Soviet Education," No. 3, 1959, examine the contents of two projected syllabi for the course of biology in the eight-year school. One of them is worked out by the Leningrad scientific-research institute of pedagogy of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences, RSFSR, the other by the institute of Methods of Teaching of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences, RSFSR. Having familiarized ourselves with these two projects, we consider it necessary to give our opinion on them. Let us take the first one. First, about the name of the course: in this projected version, it is suggested to call the course in biology, nature study. This change in name cannot be considered suitable. In science itself, the names botany, zoology, etc. have long been generally accepted and established. Further, there is nothing bad about it if children, already in school when the bases of science are studied, should grow accustomed to the correct names for these disciplines, connected as they are, with a definite content.
