Ego Involvement and the Law of Exercise: Memorization as a Function of Ego Involvement in Folklore Scholarship and Anthropology

The article is a component in my “Folkloric Behavior”, a total innovation within my “Folkloric Behavior” (1967), which introduced a theoretical system for analyzing a folkloric phenomenon in a cognitive verifiable context. The universal psychosocial principles constituting the system were applied to a real (live) community: the ethnic Arabs living in Brooklyn, N.Y., USA, with particular emphasis on the Egyptian component. This approach stood in sharp contrast to the dominant Freudian psychoanalytic and Jungian analytical psychology theories that dominate this field. Terms, concepts, and processes offered in this innovative work are currently being used—often in isolation of their academic home and systemic links-- in various folklore fields. Examples of current usage are: “ego-involvement”, “learning process”, “extinction”, “motivation”, “intervening stimuli/cues [(re-presented as) “negotiations”, etc.). Ironically, my founding work on “Folkloric Behavior” is hardly ever evaluated or even mentioned. It would be useful to afford students of folk traditions and other readers the benefits of research objectivity of tracking the temporal sequence in which these key issues appeared in folklore scholarship. This step would be required for also establishing the history of ideas in a discipline.

Factors Affecting International Tourist’s Revisit Intention in Vietnamese Tourist Destinations

Objective: The study focuses on analyzing and identifying the factors affecting the international tourist’s revisit intention in Vietnamese tourist destinations. Theoretical Framework: Through a literature review, the study approached the integration of the theory of planned behavior (Ajzen, 1991) with the perspective of Ego involvement (Zaickhowsky, 1985) to identify 6 groups of factors affecting the international tourist’s revisit intention in Vietnamese tourist destinations. Method: Following collection, the data are cleaned, and SPSS software is used to evaluate the data for appropriateness, dependability, and EFA analysis to test the study model's relationships. Results and Discussion: The research results show that the 6 factors are divided into two groups: the group related to destination brand has the highest structural path coefficient (0.655) and the group related to perceived quality has the highest structural path coefficient. lower structure (0.186). Research Implications: Research results implication that State tourism management agencies and tourism businesses need to work closely with local residents to build a brand of Vietnamese destinations worthy of the wealth of landscape, culture and tourism values to change the minds and intentions of international visitors to Vietnam's tourist destination Originality/Value: Besides using the TPB model (Ajzen, 1981) in research on behavioral intentions, the new point of this research is the integrated use of the theory of the perspective of Ego-involvement (Zaickhowsky, 1985) to recognize Identify factors affecting international tourists' intention to return to Vietnamese tourist destinations.

This research aims to analyze how ego involvement increases the interest of members or customers at KSPPS BMT Nusantara Mojopahit Mojokerto. As an effort to change the negative perspective that appears in society. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive research type. Data collection techniques were carried out using interview, observation and documentation techniques. The data analysis technique uses descriptive analysis with stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research results show that ego involvement carried out by KSPPS BMT Nusantara Mojopahit through product variations, good service quality and in accordance with members' needs and desires plays a role in overcoming the impact of negative views in society. Suitable product variations and affordable margins increase public interest in KSPPS BMT Nusantara Mojopahit. The quality of service maintained by BMT Nusantara Mojopahit creates a positive experience for members and overcomes the community's negative views of cooperatives. Ego involvement built through personal communication, shared identity (NU) with the community, and word of mouth marketing (WOM) succeeded in attracting greater public interest in KSPPS BMT Nusantara Mojopahit.

PERCEPTIONS OF AMBITIOUS BEHAVIOR PATTERNS IN STUDENT ACADEMIC COMPETITION

Perception is the process through which we assess others, focusing on the aspects of human behavior we choose to observe. This study delves into the perception of students' ambitious attitudes, an area still shrouded in debate over whether such ambition is beneficial or detrimental within student circles. We conduct a comprehensive analysis of this topic through literature reviews and support it with social judgment theory, which explores the "ego involvement" in an individual's interactions with others. This overarching view guides our examination of a common yet potentially significant psychological phenomenon among students. Sociopsychology, a branch of communication theory grounded in psychological (behavioral) evaluation, provides insight into the psychological orientation of information assessment. This approach in sociopsychological communication studies helps us understand why individuals act as they do, not just through their words but also through non-verbal actions such as tone of voice, body movement, and facial expressions.

How Can Autonomy Support from a Coach, Basic Psychological Needs, and the Psychological Climate Explain Ego and Task Involvement?

The aim of this study was to consider the relationships among the autonomy support an athlete perceives from their coach, the three basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness), the psychological motivational climate of the team (a task or ego climate), and the athlete's motivational orientation (ego or task involvement). No other studies have investigated this. My three hypotheses were as follows: autonomy support from a coach will have an impact on motivational involvement, all three basic needs will have an impact on motivational involvement, and motivational involvement will be explained by the motivational climate. A total of 175 elite male ice hockey players from Norway, ranging in age from 15 to 18 years old, answered questionnaires about autonomy support, perceived motivational climate, achievement goal orientation, and basic psychological needs. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to predict ego-task involvement using autonomy support from the coach, the need for autonomy, the need for competence, the need for relatedness, the task climate, and the ego climate. The only two variables that statistically significantly predicted ego-task involvement were the autonomy support from the coach (std. beta = 0.28, sign = 0.05) and the ego climate (std. beta = 0.34, sign = 0.01). The analysis revealed that the athletes had a higher score on task (M = 4.85) than ego (M = 3.34) involvement, but when these were transformed into two variables (high and low) for task and ego involvement, we found that most players scored high for both task and ego involvement. We found that autonomy support from the coach had a positive relationship with a high score for players on both task and ego involvement. We also found that the three basic psychological needs had no impact on the motivational involvement of the athletes. Lastly, we found that the ego climate had an impact on motivational involvement. There was a positive relationship between a high score for the ego climate and a high score for both ego and task involvement.

An empirical comparison of the Extended Parallel Process Model with the Terror Management Health Model.

The Extended Parallel Process Model posits that fear-appeal messages are processed only when message recipients perceive a critical level of threat. The more recent Terror Management Health Model suggests that, in addition to level of perceived threat, the nature of the threat also influences how target audiences process fear appeals. Specifically, fear appeals that utilize the threat of death as a consequence trigger both conscious and nonconscious responses that influence message recipients' health-related decisions. Accounting for the influence of consciousness of death helps explain maladaptive responses that extant theory has been unable to explain. Results from an experiment indicate that, when the level of perceived fear was the same across participants, the Extended Parallel Process Model successfully predicted persuasive outcomes for fear appeals that utilized the threat of arrest or serious injury as a consequence of noncompliance. However, for fear appeals that utilized the threat of death as a consequence of noncompliance, as predicted by the Terror Management Health Model, ego involvement in the health-related behavior predicted persuasive outcomes more accurately than the dual fear control and danger control processes. These findings suggest that incorporating consciousness of death and ego involvement can avoid conceptual problems with the level-of-fear construct, provide a meaningful way to predict fear-appeal responses across target audiences, and explain maladaptive responses that have eluded the explanations of extant fear-appeal theories.

The Relationship Between Motivation, Goal Orientation, and Perceived Autonomy Support From the Coach in Young Norwegian Elite Hockey Players.

This study investigates the relationship between motivation, goal orientation, and perceived autonomy support from the coach among junior elite hockey players. The study is based upon the theory of self-determination and the goal orientation theory. The first aim of the study was to investigate whether high scores on task involvement and perceived autonomy support from the coach may explain the intrinsic motivation of the players. Secondly, we sought to discover whether the most autonomous extrinsic motives may be explained by high scores on task involvement and perceived autonomy support from the coach. Lastly, we investigated whether the most controlling extrinsic motives may be explained by greater ego involvement or by both ego and task involvement and less perceived autonomy support from the coach. A total of 401 players aged 14–18 took part in the survey. The results show that intrinsic motivation can be explained by high scores on both task and ego involvement. The two most autonomous extrinsic motives—integrated and identified regulation—were both explained by task and ego involvement and perceived autonomy support from the coach. The two most controlled motives—introjected and external regulation—were both explained by high scores on task and ego involvement.

Exploring mindful consumption, ego involvement, and social norms influencing second-hand clothing purchase

Second-hand clothing (SHC) benefits society by reducing the wastage of natural resources. Research in the purchase of second-hand clothing is a debated topic. It is not yet clear whether caring for self, community, and nature drives the purchase of second-hand clothing. This study unpacks the intervening factors that drive second-hand clothing purchases underpinning attitude-intention and self-determination theories. The primary purpose is to examine the direct relationship between a) mindful consumption, b) ego-involvement, c) social norms on second-hand clothing purchase intention of young consumers. The mediation of ego-involvement and social norm is examined on the above relationship. A total of 314 usable questionnaires following the convenience and purposive snowball sampling techniques were gathered from China. The structural equation model (SEM) two-step approach analyzed the data. SmartPLS3 statistical package used to run the measurement and structural model analyses. IPMA analysis confirms mindful consumption as an important factor; hence ego-involvement drives the performance of the stated relationship. Ego-involvement mediates the relationship between mindful consumption and second-hand clothing purchase. This study bridges the unanswered questions and highlights the importance of mindful consumption, an essential driver of consumer behavior. Managers are encouraged to promote mindful consumption values in marketing communication to drive sustainability.

Young Adults’ Willingness to Engage in Climate Change Activism: An Application of the Theory of Normative Social Behavior

ABSTRACT Guided by the theory of normative social behavior (TNSB), the current survey examined factors associated with climate change activism in a young adult population (N = 627). Consistent with the TNSB, young adults showed greater intention to engage in consumer and conventional climate change activism if they viewed it to be common (descriptive norm) and accepted (injunctive norm) among their peers, if they perceived positive benefits of activism (outcome expectations), and if they identified as a climate activist (ego involvement). Results supported the TNSB’s proposed interaction between descriptive norm and similarity for both types of activism. Theoretical implications for the TNSB and practical implications for promoting climate change activism among young adults are discussed.

The Ego Phenomenon and the Doping Problem in Sport: A Historical Conceptual Analysis.

The concept of ego has various meanings in the field of psychology, depending on the paradigmatic and theoretical framework point of departure. The ego phenomenon as operationalized and measured in the theoretical framework of goal orientation will be the contextual framework for a historical conceptual analysis. In the past three decades, research in the theoretical framework of goal orientation has revealed a positive relationship between ego involvement and the tendency to use the prohibited substances to enhance performance in sport. The concept of the ego phenomenon as operationalized within goal orientation theory and meanings attached to the concept can be connected to the historic oriental writings that were written ~2,500 years ago. These attached meanings to the ego phenomenon include elements of extreme competitiveness and outcome orientation, as well as social comparisons and the external norms for the measurement of success and failure. These meanings can be traced back to the classical works involving the Bhagavad Gita, the Tao Te Ching, and the Eastern Origins of Mindfulness that are part of the broader Buddhist philosophical system. Meister Eckhart, a 12th century German theologian, in his significant contribution on the analysis of the having mode as opposed to the being mode also provides insight into the ego phenomenon that can explain why the ego phenomenon can be linked to some of the deeper psychological motives of using the prohibited substances. The researchers in psychology do not yet have a full understanding of why certain athletes dope or have a susceptibility to use the prohibited substances or performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) and thus the motivation for this historical conceptual analysis of the ego phenomenon. Therefore, this article aimed to deepen the understanding of psychological motives of the athletes who exhibit tendencies toward cheating in general and the proclivity to use the prohibited substances.

Psychological Profile and Competitive Performance in Group Aesthetic Gymnastics

The objective of the research was to evaluate the perceptions about the psychological variables of cohesion and motivational climate that AGG gymnasts have about the context created by the coaches in their teams and to analyze in the different categories the optimism and competitive anxiety they face in competitive situations. In an attempt to clarify the psychosocial training patterns in this sport and the influence they have on the well-being of its practitioners, competitive anxiety, motivational climate, team cohesion and level of optimism were taken as dependent variables. The sample was made up of 98 national and international junior and senior athletes in the aesthetic gymnastics group aged 13 to 27 (M = 17.1; SD = 2.8). The Perceived Motivational Climate in Sport Questionnaire for motivational climate, the Sport Anxiety Scale-2 for competitive anxiety, the Group Environment Questionnaire for cohesion and the Revised Life Orientation Test for optimism were used in the evaluation. The results obtained show a positive and statistically significant correlation between anxiety and ego involvement, while, for task involvement, high levels of cohesion are associated with high levels of optimism (p = 0.005). In conclusion, the data confirm that high levels of cohesion are associated with high levels of optimism, in addition high scores on task involvement show high scores on cohesion and optimism, however high scores on ego involvement are associated with low scores on cohesion and optimism.

Student Motivation and Associated Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis From Self-Determination Theory

Student outcomes are influenced by different types of motivation that stem from external incentives, ego involvement, personal value, and intrinsic interest. The types of motivation described in self-determination theory each co-occur to different degrees and should lead to different consequences. The associations with outcomes are due in part to unique characteristics and in part to the degree of autonomy each entails. In the current meta-analysis, we examine these different types of motivation in 344 samples (223,209 participants) as they relate to 26 performance, well-being, goal orientation, and persistence-related student outcomes. Findings highlight that intrinsic motivation is related to student success and well-being, whereas personal value (identified regulation) is particularly highly related to persistence. Ego-involved motives (introjected regulation) were positively related to persistence and performance goals but also positively related with indicators of ill-being. Motivation driven by a desire to obtain rewards or avoid punishment (external regulation) was not associated with performance or persistence but was associated with decreased well-being. Finally, amotivation was related to poor outcomes. Relative weights analysis further estimates the degree to which motivation types uniquely predict outcomes, highlighting that identified regulation and intrinsic motivation are likely key factors for school adjustment.

A case study of psychosocial challenges in the implementation of Family Planning health in the patriarchal society of West Sulawesi

This study aims to categorize and analyze cases of psychosocial challenges to patriarchal cultural communities in the Family Planning health program in West Sulawesi. Research using qualitative methods through a case study approach. The informants chosen were three Family Planning counselors and ten infertile couples. Data collection techniques were carried out through non-participant observation and in-depth interviews. Data analysis uses a three-step interactive model, namely first; data condensation, data display, conclusion drawing and verification. This study found a categorization of three cases based on the psychosocial challenges of the patriarchal culture community in the implementation of the Family Planning health program. The first factor, internal barriers within women who oppose using contraceptives, fear of side effects due to direct ego involvement in the use of contraceptives. External factors, perceptions and attitudes of husbands, as well as family environments and reference groups. The dominant factor is culture and religion toward the implementation of the Family Planning program. Psychosocial challenges in patriarchal cultural societies are still dominant due to cultural and religious factors. Furthermore, there are factors internal challenges and external challenges also affect the acceptance of Government programs through Family Planning to reduce the population.

How Consumers Process Complex Information Related to Food Biotechnology: The Case of Citrus Greening

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to understand how consumers process information about different applications of biotechnology in food. The context of this study was the case of citrus greening, a bacterial disease infecting citrus groves around the world. The most promising solution to this disease involves the use of biotechnology, but it will be important to understand how consumers form attitudes toward food treated in this way to successfully bring the product to market. Social judgment theory and Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) were used to guide the study, and eight focus groups (n = 73) were conducted to collect qualitative data from a sample of citrus consumers from four different regions in the USA. Evidence of ego involvement, peripheral cues, personal experiences, and knowledge seemed to be most indicative of assimilation, contrast, and non-commitment of information. Findings from this research can guide strategic marketing for novel food biotechnologies.

A retrospective analysis of the influence of ego involvement on adult running participation and preferences among post-university varsity cross-country athletes

ABSTRACT There were two purposes for this research. First was to model influence of ego involvement (EI) facets on running intensity behaviours and preferences over former interuniversity athletes’ lifespans. Second, we examined the role of age as a potential moderator of these relationships. Retrospective data related to ego involvement with, and participation in, running were collected from 288 former varsity distance runners ages 24 to 89. Data suggested that increase in centrality (i.e. the extent to which participants felt their lives were organized around running) was associated with greater self-reported running intensity (e.g. number of days run per week) over the lifespan. Age moderated the association of ego involvement with running intensity and preferences. Specifically, centrality was positively associated with number of days run per week and length of run for younger respondents. Findings are discussed in terms of continuity theory and physically active leisure behaviour over the adult life span.

A League of Their Own? A Longitudinal Study of Ego Involvement and Participation Behaviors in LGBT-Focused Community Sport

Although lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) adults may face stigmatization in sport settings that undermines this otherwise identity enhancing form of leisure, LGBT-focused sport groups provide a supportive setting for sport participation. We examine facets of ego involvement (e.g., identity affirmation, social bonding) as predictors of sport group behaviors (e.g., practice participation, volunteering) with 228 LGBT-focused sport group participants. Over time, the more identity affirmation needs were met, the more people took part in sport-related social activities. Further, the more participants’ identity expression needs were met, the more they attended practice. Enhanced social bonding from sport club participation predicted increased social event attendance. Finally, identity affirmation predicted greater social event attendance for men and those with higher levels of internalized homophobia. LGBT-focused sport participation helps meet important psychological needs, leading to enhanced sport organization-supportive behaviors. The contributions of this study to leisure and ego involvement research are discussed.
