Effects of Sustainability Practices on Farm Continuity in Urban Agriculture: From the Creating Shared Value Perspective

Urban agriculture is essential in establishing a localized, sustainable food system due to its multifunctional nature in addressing various urban challenges. Despite the recognition that a localized, sustainable food system offers an opportunity to create shared value (CSV), where agriculture generates social and economic value, the impact of environmental and social sustainability practices on farm continuity remains unclear. This paper identifies the impact of sustainability practices on long-term farm development from the perspective of the strategic intentions of urban farmers using a questionnaire survey of 205 urban farms in Japan. Our primary findings are as follows. First, we found that strategic sustainability practices positively impact farm continuity, underscoring the significance of CSV management in sustainable urban farm development. Second, the cluster analysis revealed three strategic groups: socially conscious CSV farms (32.2%), environmentally friendly farms (47.3%), and less sustainable farms (20.5%). Consequently, the socially conscious CSV farms have higher farm continuity than the other groups. For policymakers, promoting awareness of environmentally friendly farms among urban residents and involving diverse stakeholders in supporting less sustainable farms are crucial measures to enhance farm continuity.

Sustainable Practices and Company Performance in Restaurant Business at PT XYZ: The Moderating Role Of Supply Chain Visibility

The study was conducted to see the effect of sustainable practices and company performance on the restaurant business at PT XYZ: the moderating role of supply chain visibility. The population of this study is managerial level employees who work in PT XYZ restaurants located in Jabodetabek. Furthermore, the sample approach used is non-probability sampling, with the sampling strategy used in this study is purposive sampling. In this study, the minimum sample size used was 102 respondents. Then the method used in this research is the Partial Least Square (PLS) approach in Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results showed that sustainable procurement practices have a positive and significant effect on company performance. Then sustainable manufacturing practices have a positive and significant effect on company performance. Furthermore, supply chain visibility cannot moderate sustainable procurement and sustainable manufacturing on company performance in the restaurant business.

Packaging-free practices in food retail: the impact on customer loyalty

PurposeThis study analyzes the impact of packaging-free practices in food retail stores, particularly supermarkets, on customer loyalty.Design/methodology/approachBased on the literature on the impacts of sustainable practices and corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies on consumer behavior, this study defined a set of seven hypotheses that were tested using data collected from 447 consumers that regularly buy food products at supermarkets. The data were subjected to structural equation modeling using SmartPLS.FindingsThis study confirmed that packaging-free practices positively influence brand image, brand trust, satisfaction and customer loyalty. The expected positive impacts of brand image and satisfaction on customer loyalty were also confirmed. However, the expected impact of brand trust on customer loyalty was not confirmed.Practical implicationsThis article demonstrates how a competitive sector can reap benefits from implementing sustainable practices in the operational domain, particularly by offering packaging-free products at the point of purchase. Thus, as recommended, general retail stores (e.g. supermarkets) gradually increase the stores' offering of packaging-free food products, as this practice has been shown to have positive impacts not only on brand image, but also on customer satisfaction and loyalty.Originality/valueThis study extends the literature on the effects of sustainable practices on customer loyalty, by focusing on a specific practice. Furthermore, this study contributes to the advancement of research on packaging-free practices in retail by developing a research framework and providing evidence on the direct and indirect effects of this specific practice on customer loyalty.

ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF SUSTANAILBILTY PRACTICES ON FINANCIAL STABILITY OF LISTED NON-FINANCIAL COMPANIES USING ALTMAN Z- SCORE IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

The study assessed the impact of sustainability practices on financial stability of listed non- financial companies using Altman Z-score ratio in Sub-Sahara Africa countries. Ex-post facto research design was adopted in the study due to the use of secondary data. The population for the study consists of all 183 listed non-financial companies in Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa as at December 31, 2020. The sample of 30 firms consists of 10 most capitalised companies for each of the countries for a period of 10 years (2011 to 2020) was selected using simple random sampling technique. Secondary data collection procedure was adopted and data analysis was carried out using ordinary least square, random effect or fixed effect regression analysis. The findings of the study showed that all the proxies of sustainability practices except SSP were found to have a positive contribution with Z-score ratio of listed non-financial companies in sub-Sahara Africa. Furthermore, study found that firm size and age moderated the effect of sustainability practices on have moderating significant effect of explanatory variables on the explained variable. It was recommended among other things that financial experts should adopt Altman Z-score to measure the impact of sustainability practices on financial stability in sub-Sahara Africa in order to enhance financial stability as one of the conditions for economic development and growth

Could cattle ranching and soybean cultivation be sustainable? A systematic review and a meta-analysis for the Amazon

Abstract: Tropical forests are being destroyed to make space for agricultural activities with the assumption that they are required to feed the growing global population. Consequently, more sustainable practices are needed to guarantee food security and environmental protection of highly threatened natural biodiversity hotspots like the Amazon rainforest. Cattle ranching and soybean cultivation are by far the greater drivers of land use change and deforestation in the Amazon region. We performed a systematic review of papers related to these two main drivers and a meta-analysis on the effects of sustainable practices on different ecosystem services. The results of the review highlight a large concern about the negative impacts of cattle ranching and soybean crops on the ecosystem dynamics and functionality of the Amazon biome, in addition to the clear relationship with deforestation. Another relevant finding is the large gap in empirical research concerning the effects of sustainable practices on different ecosystem services. Such a gap is evident since only 13 studies from the initial database met the requirements for a meta-analysis. Of the 171 comparisons between the ecosystem services provided in conventional land-uses and those adopting sustainable practices, the overall model indicated a non-significant effect, although the results were heterogeneous. Crop yield and herbage biomass were negatively affected, while livestock productivity, soil organic carbon, soil fertility and woody biomass were positively affected. Also, the six sustainable practices evaluated showed different outcomes, from a predominance of positive effects in silvopastoral systems, to a predominance of negative effects on agrosilvicultural systems. Our systematic review and meta-analysis indicate that cattle ranching and soybean cultivation can indeed be conducted in a more sustainable way, enhancing the provision of ecosystem services while avoiding deforestation. In turn, our results also highlight the lack of empirical data and the need to standardize the methodologies used to deeply assess the effects of such practices. In conclusion, we suggest a way to advance research into the real effects of sustainable practices aimed at reducing the negative impacts of cattle ranching and soybean crops in the Amazon.

The impact of country of origin and operation on sustainability practices and performance

This study aims to explore and test two hypotheses on the effects of country of origin and operation on the relationships between 1) stakeholder pressures and the adoption of internal and external sustainability practices, and 2) sustainability practices and environmental as well as social dimensions of sustainability performance. These hypotheses are tested through the Hierarchical Linear Model (HLM) using data from the 6th International Manufacturing Strategy Survey (IMSS-VI) conducted in manufacturing assembly plants in 22 countries around the globe. The results show that country of origin and operation do not moderate the relationship between stakeholder pressures and the adoption of sustainability practices, while they have a moderating effect on the relationship between sustainability practices and performance. Studies that investigate the associations between stakeholder pressures, the adoption of sustainability practices and performance are relatively scarce and not quite conclusive. Several scholars have called for studies on the role of contextual variables. The country context in which a firm is embedded is important for understanding firms’ behavior, yet very often neglected. This paper aims to reduce this void. This research also provides managerial insight into the effects of sustainability practices on sustainability performance.

Sustainability actions, employee loyalty, and the awareness: The mediating effect of organization legitimacy

Researchers highlighted the need to increase our understanding about the effect of sustainability practices on employees. In this work, we argue that organizational legitimacy has a mediating effect between sustainability practices and employee loyalty. This structural relationship is analyzed on employees of Spanish public universities. Our results confirm the existence of the mediating effect proposed. The lack of organizational legitimacy makes sustainability actions irrelevant for employees. Results expand our understanding about the effect of sustainability among employees. In addition, they provide new evidence for practitioners in order to focus on organizational legitimacy for a better sustainability implementation.

The effects of sustainability practices on the performance of risk management and purchasing

Companies need special purchasing and supply management practices to ensure that their supply chains are sustainable and transparent. However, sustainability practices do not only serve the purpose of securing sustainability, but also help companies to avoid economic and reputational damage and risks. This paper studies the influence of sustainable purchasing practices on the risk management performance and purchasing performance by using quantitative survey data collected from 111 Finnish companies. The direct and indirect relationships between the concepts are examined using a partial least squares methodology. The results show that the use of sustainable purchasing practices improves the purchasing performance of businesses. Firms that invest in sustainability management in their purchasing will more likely have better performance in their purchasing and supply management. It was also found that sustainable purchasing practices improve reputational and operational risk management performance, which indicates that sustainability practices are significant in risk management in general, not only in relation to sustainability.

The effects of sustainable practices and managers’ leadership competences on sustainability performance of construction firms

Sustainable practices performed throughout the construction project cycle positively affect the environment, society, and economy – three dimensions of sustainability. Awareness of the importance of sustainable practices’ implementation is currently greater than in the past. In this regard, leaders need to integrate sustainability into firm activities, making the business strategy’s sustainable development part. However, the understanding of leadership and its linkage to sustainable construction are still limited, thus more work is required to establish the leaders’ vital role in the implementation of sustainable practices. To our knowledge, the extant literature still lacks the empirical evidence to prove the relationships among sustainable practices, sustainability performance, and leadership competences of construction managers. Therefore, this study developed a survey questionnaire to collect data and used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to empirically investigate the relationships between sustainable practices (environmental, economic, and social) and sustainability performance and the moderating effect of construction managers’ leadership competences on these relationships. The findings revealed that environmental, economic, and social practices have the positive influences on sustainability performance. Moreover, this study also discovered that leadership competences strengthen the environmental practices-sustainability performance relationship. However, we did not find the empirical evidence to support the moderating effect of leadership competences on the relationships between economic, social practices and sustainability performance. This study attempts to fill the certain gaps of the sustainable construction literature and provides researchers and construction managers with a deeper understanding of the roles of sustainable practices and construction managers’ leadership competences in sustainable construction.

Strategic Risk Management in Supply Chain- An empirical Investigation

Supply Chain has evolved through different phases over time and contemporary vision is extended to the supply chains of both buyers and suppliers. There is a modern classification of supply chain in terms of a modern horizontally integrated system and a vertical integrated system. In a vertically integrated system all of the supply chain related activities are performed under one roof whereas in independent supply chain, activities are performed by partners. In a horizontal supply chain, there is a focus on collaboration to minimize the supply chain related risks. In this study, we draw from sustainability practices, triple bottom line approach and supply chain risk mitigation literature to analyze a theoretical framework of risk mitigation using structural equation modeling and statistical techniques. Effect of Strategic Risk Management (SRM) is analyzed on Supply Chain Performance (SCP) with the mediating effect of Sustainable Practices (SP). The study provides key future research directions.

The impact of sustainability exploration and sustainability exploitation practices on the organisational performance: a cross-country comparison

Corporate sustainability challenges organisations with tensions between complex economic, environmental, and social issues. We draw on concepts in the innovation literature—namely exploration and exploitation—to examine corporate sustainability practices as well as the ensuing tensions between efficiency and innovativeness in achieving organisational performance. In particular, this paper draws upon institutional theory to enhance the understanding of sustainability-related phenomena, mainly from a perspective that has not yet been widely investigated in prior empirical studies. Therefore, the paper addresses the research question of whether sustainability exploitation and sustainability exploration practices are characterized by an organisation's country of origin. The target respondents of a large-scale web-based survey were manufacturing and service industry targets distributed across five countries: Germany, Poland, Serbia, Slovenia and Spain. Multiple regression with categorical predictors (dummy variables) was utilized to examine country effects on each of the performance measures. The outcome of the regression analysis provides some evidence that organisations based in different countries may have substantially different perspectives regarding the achieved levels of organisational performance as a consequence of deploying sustainability practices. In general, the results suggest that organisations in different countries show more differences in relation to sustainability practices and organisational performance compared to organisations within the same country. The findings of this paper contribute to the research on corporate sustainability by differentiating two aspects of corporate sustainability practices, namely exploitation and exploration, and by suggesting that institutional mechanisms may be a plausible explanation for differences in the deployment of sustainability practices and the effects of sustainability practices on organisational performance. Therefore, the paper contributes to the literature by providing more clarity and better understanding of how organisations may pursue sustainability practices to gain performance benefits.
