The effect of mechanical milling and annealing on the structure and magnetic properties of Sm 2Fe 14Ga 3C 2 has been studied. Milling was found to lead to the formation of an amorphous phase. Annealing at temperatures above 700 °C resulted in formation of nanocrystalline Sm 2Fe 14Ga 3C 2 phase having the Th 2Zn 17 structure and isotropic magnetic behaviour with coercivities of up to 13 kOe. It has been also shown that anisotropic powders with coercivities of 4–5 kOe can be prepared using low energy milling and subsequent heat treatment.
