Effect of Composition on Adhesion and Chemical Resistance in Multilayer Elastomer Laminates

The defense against dangerous chemical agents imposes demanding requirements for the development of protective materials, such as elastomers, plastics, and fabrics. While chemical protective clothing is commercially available, its elasticity, flexibility, stretchability, and chemical resistance spectrum may be restrictive and in need of further improvement. In this paper, a multilayer elastomer laminate, consisting of bromobutyl rubber (BIIR), acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), and a fluoroelastomer (FKM), was fabricated to meet broad-range protection against chemical agents, while remaining flexible and stretchable. The bonding between the multiple layers was investigated via formulations designed to promote interlayer adhesion. The effects of magnesium oxide (MgO), zinc oxide (ZnO), stearic acid, carbon black, and phosphonium salt on the vulcanization and adhesion of the BIIR–NBR–FKM laminate were systematically studied using cure rheometry and T-peel tests. The optimized formulations of each rubber yielded adhesion strengths of 19 N/2.5 cm and >65 N/2.5 cm for the BIIR–NBR laminate and NBR–FKM laminate, respectively. The chemical resistance of these three elastomer sheets and their strongly bonded laminates was measured according to ASTM F739 and the time-lag method for methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, and butylamine. The laminates showed excellent resistance to the selected chemicals, with detected breakthrough times of longer than 1000 min. Also, some laminates were observed to have longer breakthrough times than the equivalent thickness of the individual elastomers making up the laminate.

Self-healing soil mix cut-off wall materials incorporating reactive magnesium oxide pellets

Recent decades have witnessed the increasing use of soil mixing technology to construct cut-off walls for groundwater control or underground pollutant containment. The strength and permeability of soil mix columns deteriorate considerably when subjected to chemical, mechanical and environmental stresses, leading to the need for repair of crack-originated damage. The development of self-healing grouts could provide more resilient and sustainable soil mix cut-off walls. In this study, for the first time, self-healing soil mix columns incorporating reactive magnesium oxide pellets were developed. The magnesium oxide-based cementitious grout was mixed with a sand soil using a laboratory-scale auger, and the embedded magnesium oxide pellets were ruptured upon cracking, producing expansive healing products due to hydration and carbonation, which can significantly fill the crack volume. The effects of magnesium oxide on the grout and soil mix samples were investigated in terms of both fresh and hardened properties. In addition, the self-healing performance was evaluated by examining permeability recovery and crack closure, and the microstructure and morphology of the magnesium oxide pellets and healing products were analysed. The results demonstrate the great potential of reactive magnesium oxide pellets as a self-healing agent for soil mix cut-off wall materials.

Effects of magnesium oxide and copper oxide nanoparticles on biofilm formation of Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes

Biofilms formed in food-processing environments are of special importance as they have the potential to act as a persistent source of microbial contamination that may lead to food spoilage or transmission of diseases. The creation of microbial biofilms, which can be a source of food product contamination with food spoilage and foodborne pathogenic bacteria, is one of the most critical elements in the food industry. The goal of this study was to see how well magnesium oxide (MgO) and copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs) inhibited growth and biofilm formation of two common foodborne bacterial pathogens. This study was completed in the year 2020. Resazurin reduction and micro-dilution procedures were used to assess the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of magnesium oxide and copper oxide nanoparticles for Escherichia coli O157: H7 (ATCC 35 218) and Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) (ATCC 19 118). The bacterial adhesion to hydrocarbon technique was used to determine the cell-surface hydrophobicity of the selected bacteria. The surface assay was also used to calculate the influence of the NPs coated surfaces on the biofilm formation of the selected bacteria. Magnesium oxide nanoparticles had MICs of 2 and 2 mg ml−1, while copper oxide nanoparticles had MICs of 0.16 and 1 mg ml−1 against E. coli and L. monocytogenes, respectively. At the MIC, the magnesium and copper nanoparticles inhibited biofilm formation of E. coli and L. monocytogenes by 89.9 and 96.6 percent and 93.6 and 98.7 percent, respectively. The hydrophobicity of E. coli and L. monocytogenes was determined to be 74% and 67%, respectively. The surface assay revealed a substantial reduction in bacterial adhesion and colonization on NPs-coated surfaces. Both compounds had inhibitory effects on E. coli and L. monocytogenes, according to our findings. Even at sub-MICs, NPs were found to be able to prevent biofilm development. The microbial count and production of microbial biofilms were reduced on surfaces coated with MgO and CuO nanoparticles. MgO and CuO nanoparticles can be utilized as a cleaning agent for surfaces to avoid the formation of foodborne bacterial biofilms, which is important for public health.

Effects of Magnesium Oxide and Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles on Motor Activity, Electrocardiographic Parameters, and Oxidative Stress in an Acute Restraint Stress Model of Rats

Background: Stress can alter behavioral parameters, oxidative stress markers, and electrocardiographic (ECG) records. Also, metal oxide nanoparticles can affect behavioral and oxidative stress parameters in animal models, but their effects on the physiological functions of the body in stress situations and ECG changes are not yet clear. Objectives: In this study, motor activity, ECG records, and oxidant/antioxidant balance changes were investigated following administration of nanoparticles of magnesium oxide (nano-MgO) and zinc oxide (nano-ZnO) in normal and acute restraint stressed rats. Methods: Adult male Wistar rats were divided into 16 groups, including control (saline), restraint stress (90, 180, and 360 minutes + saline), nano-MgO, and nano-ZnO (1, 5, and 10 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) groups, with or without restraint stress of 90 minutes. Motor activities were evaluated by the elevated plus maze (EPM) and open field tests. Electrocardiographic parameters were evaluated in the 6 groups. Catalase (CAT) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) level were measured in the cerebellum + brain stem and brain hemispheres of animals. Results: Motor activity was decreased by the stress of 90 minutes, nano-MgO 10 mg/kg, and nano-ZnO 10 mg/kg. The PR interval and ST height were decreased by the stress of 90 minutes. The QRS interval was increased by nano-MgO 5 mg/kg, and QRS amplitude, T amplitude, and ST height were decreased by nano-MgO 5 mg/kg. The QT interval and QTc were increased by nano-ZnO 5 mg/kg, and ST height was decreased by nano-ZnO 5 mg/kg. The PR interval, QRS interval, QTc, and QT interval were increased by nano-MgO 5 mg/kg in the stress of 90 minutes, and the heart rate (HR) and ST height were decreased by nano-MgO 5 mg/kg in the stress of 90 minutes. HR, QRS interval, and QTc were increased by nano-ZnO 5 mg/kg in the stress of 90 minutes, and T amplitude and ST height were decreased by nano-ZnO 5 mg/kg in the stress of 90 minutes. The MDA level was increased by nano-MgO and nano-ZnO in the brain hemisphere and cerebellum + brain stem, and CAT activity was decreased by nano-MgO and nano-ZnO in the brain hemisphere and cerebellum + brain stem. The MDA level was increased by the restraint stress of 360 minutes in the cerebellum + brain stem while it was not changed in the brain hemispheres. Conclusions: It seems that the side effects of these nanoparticles on motor activity could be related to the imbalance of oxidant/antioxidant systems in the cerebellum + brain stem. Also, it is possible that nanoparticles increase the effects of acute stress on changes in ECG parameters.

Effects of Magnesium Oxide and Magnesium Hydroxide Microparticle Foliar Treatment on Tomato PR Gene Expression and Leaf Microbiome.

Recently, metal oxides and magnesium hydroxide nanoparticles (NPs) with high surface-to-volume ratios were shown to possess antibacterial properties with applications in biomedicine and agriculture. To assess recent observations from field trials on tomatoes showing resistance to pathogen attacks, porous micron-scale particles composed of nano-grains of MgO were hydrated and sprayed on the leaves of healthy tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) plants in a 20-day program. The results showed that the spray induced (a) a modest and selective stress gene response that was consistent with the absence of phytotoxicity and the production of salicylic acid as a signalling response to pathogens; (b) a shift of the phylloplane microbiota from near 100% dominance by Gram (−) bacteria, leaving extremophiles and cyanobacteria to cover the void; and (c) a response of the fungal leaf phylloplane that showed that the leaf epiphytome was unchanged but the fungal load was reduced by about 70%. The direct microbiome changes together with the low level priming of the plant’s immune system may explain the previously observed resistance to pathogen assaults in field tomato plants sprayed with the same hydrated porous micron-scale particles.

Effects of Magnesium Oxide (MgO) Shapes on In Vitro and In Vivo Degradation Behaviors of PLA/MgO Composites in Long Term.

Biodegradable devices for medical applications should be with an appropriate degradation rate for satisfying the various requirements of bone healing. In this study, composite materials of polylactic acid (PLA)/stearic acid-modified magnesium oxide (MgO) with a 1 wt% were prepared through blending extrusion, and the effects of the MgO shapes on the composites’ properties in in vitro and in vivo degradation were investigated. The results showed that the long-term degradation behaviors of the composite samples depended significantly on the filler shape. The degradation of the composites is accelerated by the increase in the water uptake rate of the PLA matrix and the composite containing the MgO nanoparticles was influenced more severely by the enhanced hydrophilicity. Furthermore, the pH value of the phosphate buffer solution (PBS) was obviously regulated by the dissolution of MgO through the neutralization of the acidic product of the PLA degradation. In addition, the improvement of the in vivo degrading process of the composite illustrated that the PLA/MgO materials can effectively regulate the degradation of the PLA matrix as well as raise its bioactivity, indicating the composites for utilization as a biomedical material matching the different requirements for bone-related repair.

Flammability characterization and effects of magnesium oxide in halogen-free flame-retardant EVA blends

The effects of magnesium oxide (MgO) on the flame retardant performance of intumescent systems based on ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER) in ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) were studied. The results showed that MgO affects both the quality and quantity of residual char. There is an optimal value for the loading amount of MgO. More or less MgO loading may cause the formation of defective char layers and worsen the flame retardancy of EVA. According to the results of limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical flammability test (UL94 rating) and cone calorimetry (CONE), the best flame retardancy with a strong and well intumescent char is obtained from the sample with 1 wt% of MgO, which has the highest LOI value of 27.9, UL94 rating of V-0 and the lowest peak heat release rate of 242 kW·m-2.

Fabrication of β-TCP foam: Effects of magnesium oxide as phase stabilizer on its properties

Porous β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) has attracted attention as an artificial bone substitute. α-TCP foam that mimics the fully interconnected porous structure of the cancellous bone can be fabricated by a ceramics foam method, which requires sintering at high temperature. However, β-TCP foam could not be fabricated by the ceramics foam method since the sintering temperature required is above the αβ transition temperature. To fabricate the β-TCP foam that mimics the fully interconnected porous structure of cancellous bone, magnesium oxide (MgO) is added as a phase stabilizer. β-TCP foam was obtained when at least 3mol% MgO was added. Lattice parameter analysis revealed that the MgO as a β-phase stabilizer was incorporated into the lattice of the TCP structure. The porosity of the β-TCP foam containing 3mol% MgO was 92%, and the compressive strength was approximately 32kPa. Despite the observed smooth surface and lower porosity of β-TCP foam compared to α-TCP foam, no improvement on the compressive strength of β-TCP foam occurred even by the addition of 3mol% or more of MgO. Formation of micro-cracks could be one the reasons. These micro-cracks were formed by contraction as a result from growth of adjacent grains.

Design optimization of microwave properties for polymer electro-optic modulator using full vectorial finite element method

In this paper, a polymer electro-optic modulator has been designed and optimized using the full vectorial finite element method. For this purpose, the effects of magnesium oxide (MgO) and down cladding thicknesses, distance between two ground electrodes, hot electrode and modulator widths modulator on the key modulator parameters, such as microwave effective index nm, the characteristic impedance ZC and the microwave losses α are presented. After selecting optimal dimensions of polymer electro-optic modulator, frequency dependent aforementioned parameters and the half-wave voltagelength product (VπL) parameter of polymer electro-optic modulator are extracted and as a consequence, an optimized design is reported. Finally, the optical and electrical modulation responses of polymer electro-optic modulator are calculated. The optimized polymer electrooptic modulator exhibits 3-dB electrical bandwidth of 260 GHz and VπL about 2.8 V·cm in this frequency.

The effects of magnesium oxide on the thermal, morphological, and crystallinity properties of metallocene linear low-density polyethylene/rubbers composite

Abstract The effects on the thermal, morphological, and crystallinity properties of the different loadings of magnesium oxide (MgO) blended with 10% rubbers [9:1 natural rubber (NR)/epoxidized NR] and metallocene linear low-density polyethylene (mLLDPE) in the presence of N,N-m-phenylenebismaleimide (HVA-2) compatibilizer were investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the epoxy and double-bond groups were absent in the blends. The crystallinity degree of mLLDPE composites were determined based on the results of differential scanning calorimetry. The crystallinity of the blends was continuously increased by the loading of MgO compared with blend of 0 phr MgO. Based on thermogravimetric analysis, the degradation temperature of NR in the blends with MgO is significantly enhanced compared with a pure NR and 0 phr MgO blend. The observations of the scanning electron micrographs indicate that the HVA-2 had caused a cross-linking reaction in the rubber phase and the domains of the MgO are separated from the continuous phase (mLLDPE).

Research on the Arsenic and Cadmium-Fixing Effects of Ameliorant in Combined Contamination Soils

This article studied the effects of chemical fixation with magnesium oxide, calcium oxide, aluminum oxide, ferrous sulfate+calcium oxide in situ on Arsenic and Cadmium combined contamination soils. The results indicate: Four agents have well fixation effects, and the fixation effect of ferrous sulfate and calcium oxide mix- restoration is the best. However, it increases the leaching toxicity of Cadmium; Aluminum oxide also has a certain fixation effect on Arsenic, but it strengthens the leaching toxicity of Cadmium in acidity condition; the fixation in situ effects of magnesium oxide and calcium oxide on Arsenic and Cadmium combined contamination soils, which dramatically decreases the leaching toxicity of Arsenic and Cadmium and makes two pollution elements co-stabilized.

The effects of magnesium oxide on mild essential hypertension and quality of life

The role of magnesium (Mg) in the pathophysiology and treatment of primary hypertension has been recently identified. To evaluate the effects of Mg supplementation on mild hypertension and quality of life, 83 patients were randomly assigned to receive either placebo (n = 41) or Mg (n = 42) after a placebo run-in phase of 4 weeks. The patients in the Mg group received 200 mg oral Mg oxide daily. All patients underwent periodic measurements of blood pressure (BP) and heart rate and 24-hour noninvasive BP monitoring at the start and end of the study. Serum and urinary electrolytes were also evaluated. To analyze quality of life, all patients completed the questionnaire. Treatment was administered and the measurements of BP were performed in a double-masked fashion. Data demonstrated a significant reduction in systolic BP values at 12-week follow-up in patients treated with Mg compared with both the pretreatment values and the values in the placebo group, whereas no difference was found in diastolic pressure. The 24-hour noninvasive monitoring of BP showed no significant differences between the two groups in systolic and diastolic values. The analysis of the questionnaire demonstrated a lower score (indicating a good quality of life) with a Likert-type scale at 12-week follow-up in the Mg group (67.58 ± 5) than in the placebo group (73.23 ± 8), with a corresponding significant improvement in psychosocial variables, general well-being, and work status. A significant difference was also found in the treatment group when the values at follow-up were compared with those at baseline (73.58 ± 6). These results show that Mg oxide positively influences the quality of life, although it exercises only a week action on arterial BP.

Effect of Ceramic Powder Slurry on Spores of Bacillus subtilis.

The effects of magnesium oxide (MgO), calcium oxide (CaO), and zinc oxide (ZnO) powder slurries on spores of Bacillus subtilis were examined. The CaO and MgO powder slurries were able to kill the spores of B. subtilis in physiological saline. The efficacy of the CaO powder slurry was much higher than that of the MgO powder slurry. It was considered that the efficacy of the CaO powder slurry against the spores depended on effects of Ca2+ and some factors due to contact between spores and the CaO powders. When the spores and nutrients such as growth medium existed together, it was observed that the MgO, CaO and ZnO powder slurries exhibited antibacterial activity against spores of B. subtilis. There was no difference in sensitivity to the ceramic powder slurry between the vegetative cells and the spores of B. subtilis. Further, the supernatant of the ceramic powder slurries promoted the germination of the spores. Therefore, it was suggested that the ceramic powder slurries weakened a high dormancy of spores, and acted on the germinated spores.

Effects of Magnesium Oxide on Grain‐Boundary Segregation of Calcium During Sintering of Alumina

The advantage of certain amounts of MgO addition in alumina sintering has been realized, and it is common practice. In an attempt to understand the role of MgO in the presence of CaO in commercial‐grade alumina, grain‐boundary segregation of Ca was investigated by scanning Auger electron microprobe (SAM) using an ultrapure alumina after controlled doping of CaO and/or MgO. The commercial‐grade alumina, which usually contains a small amount of CaO, is difficult to sinter to high density. The pure alumina composition (<99.999%) gives “clean” boundaries when it is sintered under “clean” conditions. As the powder was doped with 100 ppm of CaO and sintered at 1300° to 1500°C, all of the grain boundaries were enriched by Ca as observed by others. However, it was also discovered that some of the grain boundaries are enriched by an exceptionally high concentration of Ca. Such a large variation of Ca contents depending on the grain‐boundary facets disappeared when samples were codoped with small amounts of MgO. The results suggest that MgO plays a beneficial role in controlling the anisotropic segregation of Ca to various interfaces including grain boundaries and pore surfaces during sintering of alumina. MgO thus enhances chemical homogeneity of commercial‐grade alumina.

Effects of magnesium oxide on the lipid profile of healthy volunteers

Elevated serum cholesterol is a risk factor in the development of coronary artery disease. Magnesium has been reported to decrease total serum cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, and very low density lipoprotein, and increase high density lipoprotein. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study was completed to determine if supplemented magnesium, in the form of magnesium oxide, would produce changes in the lipid profile. Fifty normal volunteers received placebo or magnesium oxide, 400 mg capsules, twice a day for 60 days, then switched to the alternate treatment. Weight, height, blood pressure, serum potassium, serum magnesium, and a lipid profile were determined initially and after each treatment. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), comparing the mean of each component of the lipid profile at baseline and after each treatment, showed no significant difference. In conclusion, supplemental magnesium oxide did not produce statistically significant changes in the lipid profile in this group of healthy volunteers.

Effects of magnesium oxide/hydroxide on flammability and smoke production tendency of polystyrene

Investigations have been carried out on the effects of magnesium oxide and magnesium hydroxide on the thermal degradation of polystyrene. The results have been correlated with the effects of the additives on the flammability of and smoke production from the polymer. Both metal compounds are extremely efficient smoke suppressants but neither is of much interest as a flame retardant on its own. The flammability of the system can be decreased by the use of brominated additives, but at the expense of a very heavy increase in smoke production. Ternary additive systems, containing also a different metal oxide, can be used to obtain a significant degree of flame retardance while retaining a high measure of smoke suppression. Interpretations are given of the action of the additives on the degradation of the polymer.

Effects of Magnesium Oxide on the Crystallization of Calcium Salts in Urine in Patients with Recurrent Nephrolithiasis

AbstractThe effect of oral administration of magnesium oxide on the crystallization in urine of calcium oxalate and brushite was determined in 4 cases of recurrent calcium nephrolithiasis. Each patient was evaluated while on a constant metabolic diet before, during and after therapy with magnesium (1,000mg. magnesium as magnesium oxide per day). During magnesium therapy urinary hydrogen ion concentration increased by approximately 0.5 unit in all 4 patients and urinary calcium increased about 50mg. per day in 2. Urinary oxalate decreased significantly in 1 patient and urinary phosphorus was reduced in 2. The urinary activity product ratio of brushite (state of saturation) increased, owing largely to the rise in urinary hydrogen ion concentration but that of calcium oxalate was not changed significantly by magnesium treatment. Although urinary magnesium increased significantly there was no significant change in the urinary formation product ratio (limit of metastability) or the rate of crystal growth of brushite or calcium oxalate. Thus, no beneficial effect of magnesium therapy could be demonstrated in thisshort-term study.
