A Review of Domestic Research on Traditional Korean Medicine for Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy

Objectives: This study was performed to research Korean medical treatment methods for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy by summarizing domestic studies.Methods: All domestic research papers on the Korean medical treatment of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy were selected from the literature published until April 2024 in four domestic databases. In total, 26 domestic papers were selected.Results: Eighteen clinical studies and eight experimental studies were published by April 2024. Most of the studied patients were in their fifties, and 93.4% of the subjects were women. Uchashinki-hwan (牛車腎氣丸) was the most frequently prescribed herbal formula, and Rehmanniae Radix Preparata was the most commonly used herb. All studies showed significant effects of Korean medical treatment, and any adverse events were not reported.Conclusion: This study included all domestic research papers on chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy to identify research trends in the Korean medicine community. Based on this, it is meaningful to confirm areas that need to be supplemented in future research plans. However, large-scale studies are needed.

A Case Report of Tension Headache Treated with <italic>Yanghyeolgeopung-tang</italic>

Objectives: This study reports the effects of Korean medical treatment, including the administration of <i>Yanghyeolgeopung-tang</i>, on tension headache.Case presentation: A 48-year-old man with headache and neck pain caused by tension-type headache was managed with <i>Yanghyeolgeopung-tang</i>, acupuncture, and pharmacopuncture for 15 days. To evaluate the improvements, a numeric rating scale (NRS), the Korean Headache Impact Test-6 (KHIT-6), and Neck Disability Index (NDI) were used. After treatment, the symptoms were relieved, and there were no particular side effects. The NRS scores reduced from 6 to 3, KHIT-6 from 64 to 48, and NDI from 46 to 22.Conclusion: These results suggest that Korean medicine may be effective for treating tension-type headache.

A Case Report on Korean Medical Treatment for a Patient Hospitalized with Acute Compression Fracture

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the effects of Korean medical treatment on a patient with compression fractures.Methods: The patient was treated with herbal medicine and acupuncture for 51 days. Symptom changes were measured using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), Range of Motion (ROM), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and European Quality of Life Five Dimensions (EQ-5D) Scale.Results: The NRS score for lower back pain decreased from 7 to 3, and the ODI score decreased from 51.11 to 22.22. Range of motion (ROM) increased meaningfully in flexion(from 30 to 60), Left/Right lateral bending(from 10/30 to 30/45), Left/Right rotation (from 10/30 to 30/45), and the EQ-5D score also increased from 0.506 to 0.677.Conclusion: The results indicate that Korean medical treatment may be effective for managing patients’ acute compression fractures.

A Case Report on a Fibromyalgia Patient with Gastrointestinal Symptoms Treated with Odu-tang

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Korean medical treatment on a fibromyalgia patient with gastrointestinal symptoms, using herbal medicines selected according to new rather than existing standards.Method: A 52-year-old female patient with fibromyalgia was treated with <i>Odu-tang</i> and acupuncture, cupping, and moxibustion for 22 days. To evaluate the treatment, we used the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), American College of Rheumatology’s Preliminary Diagnostic Criteria (ACR), and Korean Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (KGSRS).Result: Following treatment, pantalgia diminished, NRS, and ACR scores improved, and the GSRS score decreased from 29 to 11.Conclusion: This study suggests that Korean medical treatment could effectively reduce pain and improve digestive symptoms in patients with fibromyalgia. It also presents a new method that considers individual characteristics when choosing herbal medicine.

A Case Report of Anomic Aphasia after Putaminal Hemorrhage Improved by Korean Medical Treatment Including Head Acupuncture

Aphasia is a language disorder that results from brain damage and typically occurs after a stroke. The purpose of this case report was to describe the effects of Korean medical treatment on anomic aphasia after a putaminal hemorrhage. We used Korean medical treatment, including head acupuncture and herbal medicine (Hyungbangsabaek-san) therapy, on a patient who was admitted to the hospital for 19 days. The clinical symptoms were assessed with the Korean version of the Western Aphasia Battery (K-WAB), and quality of life was evaluated with Korean version of Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life Scale-39 (K-SAQOL-39). After 19 days of treatment, the K-WAB scores were increased from 17 to 19 in the spontaneous speech score, from 7.55 to 9.85 in the comprehension score, from 9 to 9.4 in the speaking score, and from 5.8 to 9.7 in the naming score. The AQ score was increased from 78.7 to 95.9, and the K-SAQOL-3 score was increased from 2.64 to 3.26. In conclusion, the study findings suggested that Korean medical treatment could be an effective option for treating symptoms and improving quality of life in patients with aphasia after stroke. Korean Medical Treatment Including Miniscalpel Acupuncture for Patients After Rotator Cuff Tear Surgery: A Report of Two Cases

This study aimed to report the effect of Korean medical treatment including miniscalpel acupuncture on 2 patients who underwen tsurgery for rotator cuff tear. They were treated for almost 4 weeks at the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Dong-Eui University Korean Medicine Hospital. Visual analog scale (VAS), and range of movement (ROM) were used to evaluate treatment effects. In both patients, shoulder pain and restriction of shoulder joint movement improved after miniscalpel acupuncture treatment. In Case 1, shoulder pain decreased from a VAS score 8 to a VAS score 3, and ROM of the shoulder improved from flexion 100° to 160°, extension 10° to 30°, abduction 90° to 130°, adduction 10° to 40°, internal rotation 10° to 50°, and external rotation 10° to 50°. In Case 2, shoulder pain, which was rated a VAS score 8 at first-visit, disappeared, and ROM of the shoulder recovered to normal range. These results suggest miniscalpel acupuncture may contribute to the recovery process after rotator cuff tear surgery. ©2019 Korean Acupuncture & Moxibustion Medicine Society. Two Cases of Post-Stroke Dysphagia by Korean Medical Treatment with Electroacupuncture

Objectives: The aim of this study is to report the effects of Korean medical treatment with electroacupuncture on post-stroke dysphagia. Methods: Two stroke patients with dysphagia received Korean medical treatment including electroacupuncture for about six months and three months respectively. A Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), Video Fluoroscopic Swallowing Study (VFSS) were used to confirm efficacy of electroacupuncture therapy as outcome measurements. Results: After treatment, swallowing function was improved, and symptoms related to dysphagia were decreased. NRS, VFSS showed improvement in stroke patients with dysphagia. Conclusions: This study shows that Korean medical treatment with electroacupuncture can be useful for dysphagia. A Case Report of a Patient with a Tension-Type Headache Treated by Korean Medical Treatment with ByeolGab Pharmacopuncture

Objectives The aim of this study is to report the effects of Korean medical treatment with ByeolGab pharmacopuncture on a patient with a tension-type headache. Methods We treated a tension-type headache using Korean medical treatment including ByeolGab pharmacopuncture for 6 days a week for 2 weeks. As a measurement, the numerical rating scale (NRS), the Henry Ford Headache Disability Inventory (HDI), and a six point Likert scale were used to confirm pharmacopuncture therapy efficacy. Results After treatment, symptoms related to tension-type headache and other complaints were decreased and evaluation using the NRS, HDI, and six-point scale showed improvement in the patient. Conclusions This study shows that Korean medical treatment with ByeolGab pharmacopuncture has beneficial effects on control of tension-type headache and improvement in quality of life for patients. A Clinical Report of Polyneuropathy Treated with Korean Medical Treatment

Objective: To describe the effects of Korean medical treatment on a 51-year-old male patient with polyneuropathy and chief complaints of lower limb paralysis and dysarthria. Methods: The Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Scoring System (TCNSS) was used to evaluate the function of the lower limb and the symptoms of the patient were observed daily. We applied herbal medication and acupuncture daily, depending on the patient’s symptoms. Results: After the treatment, the TCNSS score was improved. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Korean medical treatment on a patient with atopic eruption of pregnancyMethods: Patient who diagnosed by atopic eruption of pregnancy was enrolled in this study. She received Korean medicine therapies such as herbal medicine, acupuncture and external application. Sopungchungyoung-tangs and Seungmahwangryeon-tangs were prescribed according to the patient’s constitution which was pungyeol. The severity of symptom was evaluated by the severity SCORing for Atopic Dermatitis index (SCORAD index).Results: Subjective symptom such as Systemic pruritus, sleep loss, and Dermatitis lesions was reduced by Korean medicine therapies.Conclusions: The present study suggests that Korean medicine therapies have a effect on atopic eruption of pregnancy.

다낭성난소증후군으로 인한 무월경, 희발월경 환자 20명의 증례 보고

Objectives: We evaluated the effect of Korean medical treatment in case of irregular menstruation (amenorrhea, oligomenorrhea) due to Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).Methods: 20 Amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea Patients with PCOS were treated with Korean medical treatment at least 3 months. We analyzed clinical data of 20 patients and checked effectiveness of treatment through the change of menstrual pattern.Results: After Korean medical treatment, Patients who complained menstrual irregularity due to PCOS were improved in menstrual condition. Among 14 amenorrhea patients, 12 patients (85.7%) started menstruation within 3 months. Among 6 Oligomenorrhea patients, 4 patients (66.7%) got better menstruation pattern than before.Conclusions: PCOS Patients who got Korean medical treatment showed better condition in menstruation pattern. Amenorrhea patients started menstruation without contraceptive pill and oligomenorrhea patients got better menstruation cycle.

한의복합치료 후 호전된 경부척수손상 환자의 사지마비 및 신경인성 방광: 증례보고

A 57-year-old male patient was diagnosed as Incomplete cervical spinal cord injury and Neurogenic bladder after falling accident and suffered from tetraplegia and urinary retention. The patient was hospitalized and treated with Complex Korean Medical treatment such as acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, bee venom pharmacopuncture and herbal medication for 13 weeks. International Standard for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI) was adopted to evaluate the functional recovery and Korean version of Modified Barthel Index (K-MBI) was adopted to evaluate the recovery of activities of daily living (ADL). After treatment, Total scores of ISNCSCI and K-MBI were improved. Also patient's micturition reflex was recovered and symptoms of neurogenic bladder were improved. This result shows that Korean Medical treatment may be an effective treatment option for spinal cord injury and neurogenic bladder patients. Further clinical studies are needed to clarify the effect of Korean Medical treatment on spinal cord injury.

A Case Report of Efficacy of Growth Height and Peak-Luteinizing Hormone Level Suppression on Idiopathic Gonadotropin-Dependent Precocious Puberty Patient Using Herbal Remedy, Aesopjiyoun-tang

The purpose of this report is to evaluate effect of Korean medical treatment on idiopathic gonadotropin-dependent precocious puberty (G-DPP) patient received herbal medicine. We administered Aesopjiyoun-tang remedy to idiopathic G-DPP and analyzed the delay effect by hormonal value and radiographs; the height growth effect by measurement of height. After Korean medical treatment, suppression effect to peak- Luteinizing Hormone level (LHL) is 14.39IU/L to 10.9IU/L for 13month, growth effect to height value is 11cm/13month; and change of mean growth velocity (MGV) is 6.08cm/year to 10.06cm/year. The gain in height by treatment is 3.98cm/year. The result suggests Aesopjiyoun-tang can be an effective treatment for G-DPP. Herbal medicine can be used as an alternative treatment in place of the GnRH treatment.
