Effect of Fungicide Application and Corn Hybrid Class on the Presence of Fusarium graminearum and the Concentration of Deoxynivalenol in Ear and Stalk Parts of Corn (Zea mays) Used for Silage.

In Wisconsin, the use of brown midrib (BMR) corn (Zea mays) hybrids for ensiling and subsequent feeding to dairy cows is quite common. The overall milk production from cows fed silage from BMR hybrids is typically higher than those fed silage made from dual-purpose hybrids. Gibberella diseases (ear and stalk rot) caused by Gibberella zeae (anamorph; Fusarium graminearum) and the accompanying accumulation of the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) can be significant issues during the field production of BMR hybrids. The work presented here aimed to understand the role of hybrid class on the distribution of F. graminearum DNA and DON in the ear and stalk parts of corn for silage. An ear and stalk partitioned sample experiment was conducted on silage corn from field trials in Arlington, Wisconsin, in 2020 and 2021. The trials were arranged in a randomized complete block design in both years, including one BMR hybrid, one dual-purpose hybrid, and seven fungicide application regimes. Paired ear and stalk samples were physically separated, dried, and ground at harvest before determining the concentration of F. graminearum DNA and DON in each sample. Across both years, the main effects of hybrid, treatment, and plant part were not significant (P > 0.1) on DON concentration. However, the hybrid-by-plant part interaction effect was significant (P < 0.01). Ears of the BMR hybrid accumulated the most DON, whereas the dual-purpose hybrid ears had the lowest DON concentration. The concentrations of DON and F. graminearum DNA were significantly (P < 0.01) and highly correlated in the ear (r = 0.73) but not in the stalk (r = 0.09, P = 0.33). These findings suggest that DON accumulation in the corn ear is a major contributor in the difference observed in the total DON between the hybrid classes. Therefore, growers and researchers are encouraged to focus production and breeding on hybrids in both classes that accumulate less DON in ears, resulting in lower total DON in corn chopped for silage.

Effects of fungicide application on physiological and molecular responses of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.): a comparison between copper and sulphur fungicides applied alone and in combination with novel fungicides.

Chemical products against fungi and oomycetes pose serious environmental issues. In the last decade, the use of less impacting active ingredients was encouraged to reduce chemical inputs in viticulture. In this study, the effect of different antifungal compounds on grapevine agronomic, physiological, and molecular responses in the vineyard was evaluated in addition to protection against powdery and downy mildews. In two years and in two Vitis vinifera cultivars (Nebbiolo and Arneis), a conventional crop protection approach, based on traditional fungicides (sulphur and copper), was compared to combined strategies. A well-known resistance inducer (potassium phosphonate), Bacillus pumilus strain QST 2808 and calcium oxide, both active ingredients whose biological interaction with grapevine is poorly characterized, were applied in the combined strategies in association with chemical fungicides. Despite a genotype effect occurred, all treatments optimally controlled powdery and downy mildews, with minimal variations in physiological and molecular responses. Gas exchange, chlorophyll content and photosystem II efficiency increased in treated plants at the end of season, along with a slight improvement in the agronomic performances, and an activation of molecular defence processes linked to stilbene and jasmonate pathways. The disease control strategies based on potassium phosphonate, Bacillus pumilus strain QST 2808 or calcium oxide combined with traditional chemical compounds did not cause severe limitations in plant ecophysiology, grape quality and productive yields. The combination of potassium phosphonate and calcium oxide with traditional fungicides can represent a valuable strategy for reducing copper and sulphur inputs in the vineyards, including those organically managed. En Tunisie, le secteur céréalier joue un rôle socio-économique important. Le présent travail est réalisé dans l’objectif d’étudier l’effet d’un fongicide sur l’efficience de l’utilisation de l’eau des anciennes variétés et des nouvelles obtentions de blé tendre. Les composantes finales du rendement ainsi que les efficiences de l’utilisation de l’eau des anciennes et nouvelles variétés ont été statistiquement analysées à la fin de la compagne expérimentale. Les résultats ont montré que les variétés Kodss et Maktarus ont présenté des performances meilleures même en absence du traitement fongicide. Ceci confirme leurs capacités de résistance à la rouille jaune la plus dévastatrice de la culture du blé tendre. Néanmoins, le fongicide utilisé (ogame) a prouvé son efficacité à protéger les cultures contre les stress biotiques et à améliorer les rendements et la qualité de la production. Ainsi, il est recommandé d’éviter les traitements fongiques sur les nouvelles variétés.

Effect of Fungicide Application on Lowbush Blueberries Soil Microbiome.

Lowbush blueberries (Vaccinium sp.) are perennial crops produced throughout eastern Canada and Maine through management of wild populations. Given the constraints of this cropping system, the application of fungicides is critical to reducing disease pressure and ensuring consistent yields. However, as plant health is intertwined with soil health, it is important to consider the impact of fungicides on microbial communities. To understand the effects of fungicides in this context, bacterial and fungal microbial communities from fungicide-treated plots, as well as untreated control plots (UTG) were analyzed using amplicon sequencing. The fungicides, considered collectively as a combined treatment group (CTG), lead to a loss in fungal richness. One family, Clavariaceae, had an increased abundance under prothioconazole relative to UTG. This finding may be significant as taxa in Clavariaceae have been thought to potentially form ericoid mycorrhizae with Vaccinium. Five functional pathways and 74 enzymes differed significantly in relative abundance between CTG and UTG including enzymes associated with soil nutrient cycles. Most notably, enzymes corresponding to the breakdown of halogen-organic compounds had an increased abundance in CTG, suggesting bacterial fungicide degradation. Some enzymes associated with soil nutrient cycles differed significantly, possibly implying changes to nutrient pathways due to fungicide treatment.

Yeast diversity in the vineyard: how it is defined, measured and influenced by fungicides

This review focuses on the considerable amount of research directed at defining microbial diversity in the vineyard and the subsequent contribution to uninoculated fermentations, with an emphasis on the effect of fungicide applications. From this research it is clear that there are many factors affecting diversity in the vineyard including: sprays, climate, location and grape-derived parameters. With their increasing affordability, next generation sequencing methods to measure diversity in environmental samples are now being adopted for studies of the grapevine microbiome. We bring together the results of these studies, discuss how diversity is measured and consider the potential applications of current knowledge. An in-depth analysis of how fungicides affect yeast diversity in the vineyard and the mode of action of different fungicide groups are also discussed. Finally, we report on alternative treatments to maintain vineyard health and reduce fungicide applications in the future.

ВРОЖАЙНІСТЬ КУКУРУДЗИ ЗАЛЕЖНО ВІД СТРОКІВ ТА КРАТНОСТІ ЗАСТОСУВАННЯ ФУНГІЦИДІВ В УМОВАХ ЗАХІДНОГО ЛІСОСТЕПУ УКРАЇНИ

Досліджено сучасний стан виробництва кукурудзи в Україні та світі, її значення, як однієї з головних експортних культур. Показано вплив застосування фунгіцидів на розвиток основних хвороб кукурудзи по таких фазах розвитку: 12 листків, фаза цвітіння, фаза воскової стиглості зерна. Чотириразове внесення фунгіцидів дозволило зменшити відсоток рослин уражених плямистостями на 15,2-15,3% відносно контролю у фазі воскової стиглості зерна. Відсоток рослин уражених іржею склав 20,2 у варіанті з триразовою обробкою препаратами. Чотириразове застосування фунгіцидів дозволило зупинити розвиток фузаріозу качана на рівні 12,9 %, проти 26,3% на контрольному варіанті. Починаючи з дворазового обприскування препаратами відсоток уражених рослин складав не більше 21,5%. Наведено дані про вплив застосування фунгіцидів на врожайність кукурудзи залежно від терміну та кратності обробок рослин. Визначено, що кратність обробок фунгіцидами у різні фази розвитку рослин має вплив на формування врожаю кукурудзи. Зі збільшенням кратності обприскувань отримували вищий врожай. Одноразове застосування фунгіцидів дозволило отримати на 0,5-1,04 т/га зерна більше відносно контролю, дворазове – 1,35-2,04 т/га. Найвищий приріст врожайності +3,4 т/га забезпечив варіант з чотириразовим внесенням фунгіцидів у фазах 10 листків + викидання волоті + після цвітіння + налив зерна. У варіанті з трьохразовою обробкою (викидання волоті + після цвітіння + налив зерна) отримали +3,13 та +2,69 т/га до контролю залежно від термінів застосування. Варіанти з пізнішими термінами внесення фунгіцидів забезпечували вищий приріст врожаю зерна кукурудзи порівняно із ранніми термінами (10 листків). Досліджено, що вміст мікотоксинів (фумонізин В1, Т-2 токсин, зеараленон та дезоксиніваленол - ДОН) у зерні кукурудзи не перевищує граничні межі у жодному з варіантів та знижується зі збільшенням кратності обробок фунгіцидами.

Role of Fungicide Applications on the Integrated Management of Wheat Stripe Rust.

First described in Europe in 1777, stripe rust (SR) caused by Puccinia striiformis Westend. f. sp. tritici Erikss (Pst) is one of the most important and destructive diseases of wheat worldwide. Until 2000, SR was mainly endemic to cooler regions, but since then, new aggressive strains have emerged, spread intercontinentally, and caused severe epidemics in warmer regions across the world. This has put SR as a disease that poses a threat to the world food security. At present, the preferred strategy for control of SR is the access to wheat cultivars with adequate levels of SR resistance. However, wheat breeding programs are not sufficiently advanced to cope with the recently emerged Pst strains. Under this scenario, foliar fungicide applications have become an important component of SR management, but information on the effects of fungicide applications on SR control and wheat cultivar yield response is scarce. This review seeks to provide an overview of the impact and role of fungicides on SR management. With focus on wheat management in the major wheat-growing regions of the world, the review addresses: (a) the efficacy of different fungicide active ingredients, optimal fungicide timing and number of applications in controlling SR, and (b) the impact of fungicide on wheat grain yield response. Inclusion of fungicides in an integrated crop management approach is discussed.

Crop Protection 117:000–000.Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) is a perennial species emerging as a new crop in the southeastern United States. In previous studies, application of quinone outside inhibitor (QoI) fungicides enhanced overwintering survival of stevia. Greenhouse and field trials were conducted to assess the effect of multiple fungicides on plant growth, root associated microorganisms, and overwintering survival. In greenhouse trials in the absence of soilborne pathogens, no differences in plant height, shoot weight, or root system ratings were observed among treatments. In two field trials screening seven combination fungicides and one biological control, significant increases in overwintering survival of plants treated with QoI fungicides were observed. Plants were dug from the fields monthly to destructively sample root crowns and species of Fusarium, Ceratobasidium, Pythium, and Macrophomina phaseolina were consistently isolated. Abundant microsclerotia from M. phaseolina were observed on stems of plants that did not survive winter. In seven sample months at each of the two field trials, non-fungicide treated plants had the lowest root weights. This study is one of the first to evaluate interactions between fungicide use and root associated fungi in a perennial crop and provides a framework to further investigate the role of root-associated fungi in overwintering survival.

Does dormancy protect seeds against attack by the pathogenic fungus Fusarium tricinctum in a semiarid grassland of Northwest China?

Soil fungal pathogens can result in the failure of seedling establishment, but the effects of fungicide applications on seed/seedling survival have differed among studies. We assumed that the variation may relate to seed dormancy/germination characteristics and hypothesized that nondormant germinating seeds are more likely to be killed by fungal pathogens than dormant seeds. Dormant and nondormant seeds of Stipa bungeana and Lespedeza davurica were inoculated with a pathogenic fungus Fusarium tricinctum under laboratory and field conditions. The outcomes of seed/seedling fate and other parameters were evaluated. In the laboratory, nondormant seeds inoculated with F. tricinctum developed white tufts of mycelium on the radicles of germinating seeds causing them to quickly die, but dormant seeds remained intact. In contrast, in the field inoculation with F. tricinctum did not cause higher mortality of nondormant than dormant seeds but resulted in higher percentages of seedling death before they emerged from soil than the controls. Our results suggest that dormancy protects seeds from being attacked by some pathogens by preventing germination, but the protection is lost once germination has commenced. Further study involving various plant species with more seeds is needed to assess the generality of this pathogen-seed interaction hypothesis.

Fungicide application can improve production of tomato coinfected with Begomovirus and Crinivirus

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of fungicide application on the concentration of Tomato severe rugose virus (ToSRV, Begomovirus) in the 'Mariana' hybrid tomato coinfected with ToSRV and Tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV, Crinivirus) and the progression of viral concentration by qPCR, as well as to quantify fruit yield and quality. Experiment I consisted in the application of fungicides after sowing (pretreatment): pyraclostrobin+metiram (P+M) (at 3 g L-1) + boscalid (B) (at 0.3 g L-1), followed by biweekly sprayings with P+M (4 g L-1); in experiment II, there was no application at sowing (control treatment), only 4 g L-1 P+M biweekly. ToSRV and ToCV transmissions were performed using sweetpotato whiteflies (Bemisia tabaci, biotype B), at 15, 30, 45, 60, and 70 days after transplanting (DAT). There was an increase in yield, better fruit quality, and a reduction in the ToSRV concentration in the plants, when the viruses were transmitted late and pretreatment was performed. Tray pretreatment in sowing with P+M (3 g L-1) and B (0.3 g L-1), followed by biweekly sprayings with P+M (4 g L-1), increases fruit yield and quality in the 'Mariana' hybrid tomato coinfected at 45, 60, and 75 DAT by ToSRV and ToCV, and there is a reduction in the concentration of ToSRV.

Control of Rhizoctonia solani in Sugar Beet and Effect of Fungicide Application and Plant Cultivar on Inoculum Potential in the Soil.

Rhizoctonia solani (AG 2-2 IIIB) is the causal agent of Rhizoctonia root and crown rot, a disease that causes severe economic problems in sugar beet growing areas worldwide. In the United States, azoxystrobin is the most important active ingredient for fungicidal control of R. solani in sugar beet, showing efficacy superior to other substances. First reports on resistance development in R. solani, however, underline the importance of a careful fungicide resistance management. For this reason, the efficacy of a new fungicide mixture of azoxystrobin and difenoconazole was compared with a fungicide containing only azoxystrobin. Field trials were carried out under natural infection conditions as well as with inoculation in the years 2012, 2013, and 2014. Evaluation of the disease severity and the obtained white sugar yield of different sugar beet cultivars demonstrated that both fungicide treatments possess a similar efficacy, reducing the diseased beet surface by up to 78% and preventing yield losses. Additionally, a real-time PCR assay, based on DNA extracts from representative soil samples (250 g), was used to directly determine the effect of chemical treatment and plant cultivar on the soil-borne inoculum. Fungicide application significantly reduced the concentration of soil-borne inoculum by up to 97%. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that the cultivation of a susceptible cultivar significantly increases the concentration of R. solani in the soil by a factor of 200. In conclusion, the study implies that only a combination of resistant cultivar and fungicide application can prevent an accumulation of R. solani inoculum under conducive conditions in infested fields.

Effect of Fungicide Application and Cultivar on Soybean Green Stem Disorder.

Green stem disorder of soybean (Glycine max) has increasingly become a nuisance for soybean producers. The disorder is distinguished from other manifestations of delayed plant maturity by the delayed senescence of stems only, with normal pod ripening and seed maturation. The primary objective of the first study was to determine whether green stem disorder increased with a fungicide treatment. Field cages to isolate soybean plants to prevent insect interactions were used and treatments included maturity group (MG) II insensitive and sensitive soybean cultivars with or without fungicide applications. A secondary objective was to determine fungi potentially associated with the disorder. The results indicated significant elevation of the incidence of green stem disorder when using a fungicide. Species of Diaporthe or Phomopsis and Macrophomina phaseolina were more frequent in stems without the disorder, whereas species of Colletotrichum were found mostly in stems with the disorder. In another study, field experiments were conducted without cages in replicated field plots to compare the effects of fungicides with different chemistries and timing of fungicide application on incidence of green stem disorder using green stem disorder MG II- and MG III-sensitive and insensitive soybean cultivars. There was a significant increase in percentage of green stem disorder due to fungicide application, depending on fungicide chemistry, timing of application, year, location, and cultivar sensitivity to green stem disorder. Generally, Headline and Headline-Domark applications resulted in higher incidence of green stem disorder than Domark alone or the nonsprayed control, with over 50% incidence in many cases. Higher percent green stem disorder was significantly (P < 0.05) associated with higher yields in 11 of the 28 trials. From the results of this research, soybean producers should be aware of the possible risk that fungicide application may have in increasing incidence of green stem disorder. In addition, producers can help manage green stem disorder by selecting soybean cultivars reported to be consistently insensitive to the disorder.

Effect of Fungicide Application on the Management of Avocado Branch Canker (Formerly Dothiorella Canker) in California.

Members of the Botryosphaeriaceae family have been associated with branch cankers of avocado trees (Persea americana) in California. Canker infections are initiated by spores entering the host plant through fresh wounds such as pruning wounds. With high-density planting becoming more common in the California avocado industry, more intensive pruning may increase the occurrence of branch canker. The objective of this study was to evaluate the preventive ability of some commercial fungicides belonging to different chemical families against fungal pathogens associated with avocado branch canker. Initially, 12 fungicides were tested in vitro for their effect on the inhibition of mycelial growth of three isolates of Dothiorella iberica and isolates (five per species) of Neofusicoccum australe, N. luteum, N. parvum, and Phomopsis sp. Subsequently, azoxystrobin, fludioxonil, metconazole, and pyraclostrobin, selected because of their low effective concentrations that reduce 50% of mycelial growth (EC50 values), and myclobutanil, selected for its high EC50 value, were tested in two field experiments. Azoxystrobin and fludioxonil were used in a premix with propiconazole and cyprodinil, respectively, in field trials. Significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed among fungicides in field trials. Azoxystrobin + propiconazole had the highest percent inhibition at 52 and 62% (internal lesion length) in trial 1 and trial 2, respectively, although this level of inhibition was not significantly different from that of metconazole. A significant correlation (r = 0.51, P < 0.05) was observed between internal lesion length data in the field experiment and EC50 data from in vitro fungicide screening. Application of azoxystrobin + propiconazole and metconazole can play a key role in protecting Californian avocado against fungi causing avocado branch canker.

Effects of Host Physiology on the Development of Core Rot, Caused byAlternaria alternata, in Red Delicious Apples

Alternaria alternata is the predominant fungus involved in moldy core and core rot of Red Delicious apples. The effects of environmental conditions during bloom on moldy core and core rot, and on the need for fungicide application, were examined in 10 experiments carried out in 2007. In untreated experimental plots, typical moldy core symptoms were very common, with relatively low variability (coefficient of variation: 22.2%) among experiments; core rot incidence ranged from 2 to 26% with large variability (coefficient of variation: 90.0%) among experiments. No evidence of prevailing environmental conditions during bloom affecting the development of moldy core or core rot was detected. No effect of fungicide application (a mixture of bromuconazole + captan three times a week at bloom) on moldy core or core rot was found. A random distribution of moldy core and an occasional aggregation of core rot in the orchards were indicated from Morisita's index of dispersion (I(δ)). The hypothesis that core rot incidence is governed by host physiology and that yield load can be used as an indicator of trees' susceptibility was examined in a set of eight observations and four experiments. No correlation was found between tree yield load and moldy core, but core rot incidence was inversely related to yield load. Furthermore, irrespective of tree yield load, core rot was more abundant on large compared with small fruits. It is concluded that host physiology, rather than pathogen occurrence or environmental conditions at bloom stage, governs the development of core rot in Red Delicious apples caused by A. alternata in Israel.

Content of phenols in wheat as affected by varietal and agricultural factors

This study evaluates the concentration of various forms of ferulic acid in wheat and in wheat varieties grown under comparable organic and conventional conditions over two years. The effect of fungicide application in 2009 was also studied. Soluble conjugated and bound forms of ferulic acid were quantified by HPLC-PAD after extraction, the bound form was present predominantly up to 85–90% of total content. In 2008 the bound form of ferulic acid was measured in the range of 248–550μg/g, the conjugated form was between 11 and 40μg/g in all the wheat cultivars as a function of (NPK) treatments. Total ferulic acid content measured in 2009 varied in the range of 275–435; 267–341; 296–378μg/g, with fungicide and 189–394; 231–366; 182–324μg/g without fungicide in varieties Békés, Csillag and Petur respectively. In 2008 a significantly higher amount of conjugated ferulic acid was measured in all three investigated cultivars as compared to the content found in 2009 for the same cultivars. As all the samples were treated with fungicide, the main factor was the year (climate conditions). The combination of NPK, fertilizers did not affect significantly the ferulic acid concentration, on the other hand the year (climate conditions) influenced significantly the soluble conjugated ferulic acid content in all fungicide treated varieties.

Effect of fungicide application on Wheat Head Blight, occurrence of Fusarium spp. and mycotoxin production The aim of the study was to determine if azoxystrobin and metconazole used for the control of wheat FHB at half, full, and quarter more the recommended dose rate may affect in differentiated way on the occurrence of Fusarium spp. and their ability to mycotoxin production in harvested grain, in wheat ears artificially inoculated with two DON-producing isolates of F. culmorum. Macroscopic evaluation showed high incidence of fusariosis. Plant health in the plots where the heads were artificially inoculated and fungicide was not applied was similar to the protected ones. Only increasing the dose metconazole resulted in a stronger reduction of fusariosis. The advantageous effect of azoxystrobin was not observed. Mycological analysis of harvested grain showed the presence of a number of F. culmorum, but from samples sprayed with metconazole it was isolated in smaller quantities. Also F. avenaceum, F. graminearum, F. poae and F. tricinctum were isolated. Molecular analysis showed the presence of F. culmorum in all samples of harvested grain. Also genes from Tri cluster were identified, involved in the synthesis of type-A and type-B trichothecenes - especially DON and 3Ac-DON. Chromatography revealed the presence of small quantities of mycotoxins. In all samples DON and 3Ac-DON were predominant. In general, F. culmorum isolate, which caused weaker symptoms of FHB and was less numerously isolated from grain that the other one, produced smaller amounts of mycotoxins. Samples protected with azoxystrobin contain the largest quantities of DON. Effect of different doses of fungicides on the number of mycotoxins was not clearly established.

In this study, field experiments have been conducted over three growing seasons to evaluate the effect of fungicides (triazoles and strobilurins) and a foliar fertilizer application to winter wheat at anthesis on flag leaf senescence, grain yield, bread-making quality, Fusarium head blight (FHB) disease and deoxynivalenol (DON) contamination. Flag leaf greenness was significantly influenced by the fungicide application. A delay in flag leaf senescence following triazole use did not increase grain yield. No effects of fungicide application on protein concentration were recorded. The application of strobilurin to a triazole programme did not significantly delay senescence of the flag leaf or increased yield, compared to the triazole-only application, while a consistent benefit was observed for dough strength ( W). The triazole application led to significantly lower FHB symptoms and DON contamination, while the triazole-strobilurin fungicides programme led to an increase in DON contents, that were often higher than the untreated controls. Grain yield and quality were improved when a foliar feed containing macro- and micro-nutrients was added to a triazole fungicide programme, with no additional risk for DON contamination. Compared to the strobilurin fungicide application, the foliar fertilizer led to a longer delay of the flag leaf senescence and higher bread-making quality.
