Consumption of biofuels rises in European Union

This paper examines the effect of crude oil prices on the prices of 35 internationally traded primary commodities for the 1960–2005 period. It finds that the pass-through of crude oil price changes to the overall non-energy commodity index is 0.16. At a more disaggregated level, the fertilizer index had the highest pass-through (0.33), followed by agriculture (0.17), and metals (0.11). The prices of precious metals also exhibited a strong response to crude oil price. In terms of individual commodities, the estimates of the food group exhibited remarkable similarity while those of raw materials and metals gave a mixed picture. The implication is that if crude oil prices remain high for some time, as most analysts expect, then the recent commodity price boom is likely to last much longer than earlier booms, at least for food commodities. The other commodities, however, are likely to follow diverging paths. On the methodological side, the results show that price indices, while providing useful summary statistics, they need to be supplemented by individual commodity analysis.

Inflationary effect of crude oil prices in Turkey

It is generally acknowledged that changes in oil prices affect economic welfare in ways that are not entirely reflected in transactions in the oil market. In this article, by using the 1990 input–output table, the inflationary effects of crude oil prices are investigated for Turkey. Under fixed nominal wages, profits, interest and rent earnings, the effect of increasing prices of oil on inflation is limited. However, when wages and the other three factors of income (profit, interest and rent) are adjusted to the general price level that includes the oil price increases, the inflationary effect of oil prices becomes significant. Hence, indexation could have very severe effects on an economy when oil prices increase and, in some cases, could even lead to hyperinflation.

Changing crude oil price effects on US agricultural employment

The effect of changes in the price of crude oil on agricultural employment in the USA between 1947 and 1995 is investigated. After reviewing previous assessments of the issue, the existence of an empirical relationship between agricultural employment and crude oil price changes is established using Granger causality. Subsequently, the nature of the relationship is estimated with the results suggesting that at least three full years are required before the measurable effects of a percentage change in the real price of crude oil on the change in agricultural employment are exhausted. Finally, the structural stability of the functional relationship between the change in agricultural employment and changes in the price of crude oil, the percentage changes in expected net farm income, realized technological innovation, and the wage rate is studied.

Status of Surfactant or Micellar Methods

Enhanced recovery with surfactants is being pursued as a means of increasing the U.S. energy supply. Laboratory and field work is under way on both low- and high-concentration processes to optimize the method of injecting surfactant. Critical factors in economic projections of surfactant recovery processes are oil recovery, oil price, and tax load. Introduction Enhanced recovery methods are being actively pursued by industry and through government projects as a means of increasing the U.S. energy supply. An additional 59 billion bbl of oil from known reservoirs are estimated to be recoverable with existing techniques, including surfactant methods, thermal techniques, and CO2 flooding. Of the potential reserves, about 60 percent are estimated to be amenable to chemical flooding with surfactants. This paper considers chemical flooding that uses surfactants for oil recovery. Field testing over the past 13 years is considered from the standpoint of using project results to predict full-scale development economics. Other water-soluble compounds have been suggested by Holbrook for surfactant flooding; these compounds include organic perfluoro compounds, fatty acid soaps, polyglycol ether, salts of fatty or sulfonic acids, and polyglycol ether, salts of fatty or sulfonic acids, and polyoxyalkylene compounds.
