Effects of Core Stability Training on Muscle Physiology among Adults with Low Back Pain

Background: The effects of core stability training (CST) on muscle physiology in adults with chronic low back pain(CLBP) are still debatable. Objectives: To explore the effects of CST on muscle physiology in adults with CLBP. Methods: Eligible studies published in English from inception to October 2023 were extracted from PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus in this review. Pedro was used for scoring and followed the PRISMA guidelines. Findings: Core muscle strength (1 study), thickness (4 studies), and activation (6 studies) favored CST. Conclusion: CST was more effective in improving core muscle strength, and activation for patients with CLBP.

The effect of core stability training on the balance ability of young male basketball players.

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the impact of a 10-week Core Stability Training (CST) compared to Traditional Strength Training (TST) on the balance abilities of adolescent male basketball players. Methods: Subjects (age: 15.70 ± 0.75, height: 178.4 ± 8.31, weight: 66.55 ± 8.34) were randomly assigned to either the Core Stability Training group or the Traditional Strength Training group. Three selected balance assessment indicators included the Single-leg Standing with Eyes Closed Test, Star Excursion Balance Test, and Core Four-Direction Endurance Test. Results: 1) The scores were significantly different in both groups before and after the Single-leg Standing with Eyes Closed Test; (p < 0.01, d = 1.692, d = 1.837); 2) In the Star Excursion Balance Test, the scores of the experimental group showed significant difference (p < 0.05) or highly significant difference (p < 0.01) with an average effect size of (d = 1.727) when the left or right foot supported in the other directions before and after the training. However, there was no significant difference in scores in the c direction when the left foot supported (p > 0.05, d = 0.954); 3) In the Core Four-Direction Endurance Test, there were no significant differences in scores for the control group before and after training (p > 0.05, d = 0.567), while the experimental group showed significant differences in scores before and after training (p < 0.05, d = 1.889). Discussion: Both CST and TST were effective in enhancing the balance abilities of adolescent basketball players. CST, in particular, demonstrated improvements in dynamic balance and agility across multiple planes. Basketball coaches are encouraged to consider incorporating CST training programs into their overall training plans for optimal balance enhancement.

Differences in the Influence of Core Stability and Balance Training Training on the Risk of Falling in the Elderly

Background of the problem: The aging process causes a decrease in the sensory system, musculoskeletal system, and neurological system which will cause balance disorders and also the risk of falling, to reduce these problems, physical activity must be increased, to improve this there are several exercises such as core stability and balance training. Research Objectives: This study aims to determine differences in the effect of core stability training and balance training on reducing the risk of falling in the elderly. Research Methods: The research design was two group pre and post test design. Research Subjects: The subjects in this study were the elderly who were at risk of falling in the Independent Children's Social Service Institution for the Elderly Social Service "Pucang Gading" who met the inclusion criteria. The number of subjects as many as 30 subjects were divided into 2 groups divided by randomization. Group I was given core stability training and group II was given balance training. Fall risk measurement uses the Time Up and Go Test (TUGT). Research Results: The results of different test groups of core stability and balance training post test using the Independent T-Test showed p = 0.00 (p = &lt;0.05). This shows that there is a difference in the effect of core stability training and balance training on reducing the risk of falling in the elderly. The results of the mean difference in the core stability and balance training groups showed that the core stability group was greater than the balance training group. Conclusion: Core stability has more influence on reducing the risk of falling in the elderly than balance training Group

Effects of Core Stability Training on Kinematic and Kinetic Variables in Patients With Chronic Low Back Pain

Purpose: This study aims to assess the effects of an 8-week core stability training on the kinematics and kinetics of trunk flexion and extension motions in patients with chronic non-specific low back pain (CNSLBP). Methods: A total of 30 CNSLBP patients with the age range of 25 to 45 years were randomly divided into 2 equally sized groups. The subjects were identified through clinical examination. Before and after the training, tests were applied to assess peak 3-dimensional hip joint moments, peak negative and positive hip joint powers, and lumbopelvic coupling angles during trunk flexion and extension motions. The first group underwent an 8-week core stability training program, including the specific exercise of the deep muscles of abdominal along with the lumbar multifidus co-activation. After the 8-week program, the post-test stage was performed similarly to the pre-test. Results: The main effects of “time” (P=0.029, f=0.84) and “time-by-group” interactions (P=0.03, f=0.16) for hip abductor moments and internal rotator moment (P=0.03, f=0.87) were significant. A trend toward the statistically significant main effect of “time” was found for the coupling angle during the flexion phase (P&lt;0.05, f=1.88), extension phase (P=0.02, f=0.93), and “time×group” interaction during the flexion (P&lt;0.05, f=1.96), extension (P=0.01, f=0.96) phases. Conclusion: Core stability training has the potential to improve kinematics and kinetics during trunk flexion and extension motions in patients with CNSLBP.

Effect of Core Stability Training on Postpartum Mother's Sexual Desire.

Women may experience different problems in every aspect of their sexual life throughout their lives; therefore, it is essential to check women's sexual health and try to improve it. The present research aims to assess core stability trainings on postpartum mothers' sexual desire. This quasi-experimental research was conducted by random sampling on 72 mothers who referred to comprehensive health centers in Isfahan in 2019 in postpartum period. The samples were divided into experimental and control groups by random placement method (blocking). Core stability exercises were performed in the experimental group for 24 sessions. The demographic questionnaire and Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) were filled out in two stages (before and one month after the intervention) by the samples, and the data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney, independent t-test, paired t-test, Chi-square. The result of this study showed that the average score of the sexual desire after intervention in the experimental group was significantly higher than that in the control group (p = 0.03). The average score of the sexual desire after the intervention in the experimental group was significantly higher than that before the intervention (p < 0.001). The average scores of the sexual desire before and after the intervention in the control group were not significantly different (p = 0.40). Eight weeks of core stabilization exercises can improve endurance of the pelvic floor muscles and the central part of the body, subsequently promoting females' sexual desire. The findings of this study can be considered in the fields of education, health, clinical, and policy.

EFEITOS DO TREINAMENTO DE ESTABILIDADE DO CORE SOBRE A FORÇA ESPECÍFICA EM LUTADORES

ABSTRACT Introduction: Boxing is characterized by a high degree of combination of strength and skill and belongs to the sports group of enduring strength and skill combined with long-term continuous whole-body strength output to achieve good results in competition. Therefore, athletes pay more attention to the skills they use all the time, and it is very important to master the techniques correctly and reasonably distribute physical strength accurately. Objective: Explore the effect of core stability training on the specific strength of wrestlers. Methods: 12 top junior level athletes of a provincial women’s wrestling team as research objects, 12 people in total, and randomly divided into control and experimental groups with six people. Results: After the test, the data changes in the experimental group were highly significant compared to before and after the experiment (P&lt;0.01). The data changes between the experimental and control groups were significantly different before and after the experiment (p&lt;0.05), showing that the special strength of core stability training fighters has a small increase. Conclusion: Core stability training is useful for the specific strength of wrestlers. Level of evidence II; Therapeutic studies - investigation of treatment outcomes.

Effect of a 6-week core stability training program on active trunk repositioning: a randomised controlled trial

IntroductionCore stability training has recently attracted attention for improving muscle performance. This study aimed to examine the effect of core stability training on active trunk repositioning error.MethodsForty healthy males, randomly assigned into two equal groups; experimental and control groups, participated in the study. Their age, weight, height, and BMI ranged between 18–22.5 years, 64–85 kg, 1.63–1.83 m, and 19.4–25 kg/m2, respectively. The Biodex Isokinetic dynamometer was used to assess the absolute error (AE) at both 30° and 60° trunk flexion, measured at a 60°/s angular velocity. Data were recorded twice; before (pre-test) and after (post-test) a 6-week period during which the experimental group was trained.ResultsMixed 3-way ANOVA revealed that the AE was significantly lower at 60° trunk flexion in both groups at pre-test, and in the control group at post-test compared with 30° flexion (&lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt; &lt; 0.05). In addition, the AE decreased significantly in the post-test in the experimental group only at both trunk flexion angles compared with pre-test (&lt;i&gt;p&lt;/i&gt; &lt; 0.05).ConclusionsThe decreased active trunk repositioning error with core stability training indicates improvement in trunk proprioception. Thus, core stability training could be beneficial if added to rehabilitation programs that aim to improve trunk proprioception.

Effects of Core Stability Training on Functional Movement Patterns in Tennis Players.

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of a six-week core stability training program on the fundamental movement pattern assessed using the Functional Movement Screen Test in tennis players. The study group consisted of 160 subjects (74 women, 86 men) with a mean age of 20.26 ± 1.55. The Functional Movement Screen Test (FMS™), as well as the core stability tests including the lateral trunk muscles endurance test (the side bridge test), the abdominal muscles endurance test and the trunk extensors muscle endurance test—were used to evaluate the effects of core stability training. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in the FMS test scores before and after introducing a core stability exercise program. Initially, the average total score of the FMS test in female tennis players was 14.58 ± 2.91, and after core stability training it was 17.20 ± 1.68 (p < 0.001). In the male group, the total FMS test score was 14.44 ± 2.76 before and 16.91 ± 1.36 after (p < 0.001) in the final assessment. Additionally, statistically significant differences were observed in the core stability test scores before and after introducing a stabilisation training program. The results of the study showed that specific core strengthening exercises could improve the FMS test scores in adult tennis players. This may also have an influence on reducing injury risk in this group, although further studies would be required to test this.

The Effect of Core Stabilization Training on Improving Gait and Self-Perceived Function in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis: A Single-Arm Clinical Trial.

The treatment of patients with knee osteoarthritis is typically focused on the involved lower extremity. There is a gap in the literature concerning the effectiveness of core stabilization training on the treatment of patients with knee osteoarthritis. This investigation aimed to determine whether core stabilization improved the gait and functional ability of patients with knee osteoarthritis. Eighteen participants with knee osteoarthritis completed the six-week core stabilization intervention. Participants completed the gait motion analysis and the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score to assess self-perceived function, pre- and post-intervention. Gait speed improved (p = 0.006, d = 0.59), while the external knee adduction moment decreased (p = 0.034, d = −0.90). Moreover, self-reported function improved (p < 0.001, d = 1.26). The gait speed and external knee adduction moment changes met minimal detectable change thresholds, while gait speed also met the minimal clinically important difference. A six-week core stabilization program can thus improve gait speed and reduce the external knee adduction moment, which is tied to disease progression. Increased functional scores post-intervention indicate an important clinical improvement. Core stabilization training is a safe and potentially effective treatment option for this population.

Effect Of Core Stability Training In Overhead Athletes With Scapular Dyskinesis:A Randomized Control Trial

PURPOSE:To investigate the effect of core stability training in the rehabilitation of Scapular Dyskinesis(SD) in overhead athletes. METHODS:Twenty four overhead athletes with SD were randomized into two groups: the trial group(n = 12) received core stability training and scapular muscles training over a period of five weeks and the controls received scapular muscles training. Activation of muscles during overhead movement, the position of scapula, the function of shoulder were compared before and after the training. RESULTS:1. Activation of muscles during shoulder movement after training:(1)During shoulder flexion, MVC% of UT in the trial group was lower than the control group(20.94 ± 4.90 vs 32.9 ± 5.21, p < 0.05) , MVC% and RMS of LT were higher than the control group(37.55 ± 14.16 vs 26.92 ± 10.73,28.23 ± 4.53 vs 18.56 ± 6.10, p < 0.05), MVC% of SA was higher than the control group(28.23 ± 4.53 vs 18.56 ± 6.10,p < 0.05), UT/LT and UT/SA in the trial group were lower than the control group(0.32 ± 0.19 vs 0.71 ± 0.19,0.77 ± 0.18 vs 0.98 ± 0.17,p < 0.05).(2)During shoulder abduction, MVC% and RMS of LT were higher than the control group(29.68 ± 2.73 vs 19.65 ± 4.77,18.82 ± 5.13 vs 12.62 ± 2.45,p < 0.05);UT/MT and UT/LT in the trial group were lower than the control group(1.23 ± 0.47 vs 1.87 ± 0.52,1.65 ± 0.73 vs 2.01 ± 0.65,p < 0.05).(3)During PNF D2 pattern, MVC% and RMS of UT in the trial group were lower than the control group(20.66 ± 8.02 vs 29.74 ± 9.72,10.94 ± 3.42 vs 17.72 ± 7.43,p < 0.05);MVC% of LT was higher than the control group(28.99 ± 4.88 vs 20.95 ± 4.27,p < 0.05);UT/LT and UT/SA in the trial group were lower than the control group(1.08 ± 0.33 vs 1.46 ± 0.21,0.51 ± 0.25 vs 0.69 ± 0.25,p < 0.05).2. As for SI and LSST, there were no significant difference between the two groups after training.3.Function of shoulder after training: (1)DASH: score of sports section in the trial group was lower than the control group(7.81 ± 4.42 vs 13.28 ± 5.22,p < 0.05).(2)Score of Y-balance in the trail group was higher than the control group(0.97 ± 0.07 vs 0.91 ± 0.08,p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS:It is better to add core stability training before scapular muscles training in the rehabilitation program for overhead athletes with SD, as it can help improve the scapular muscles activation,scapular muscles balance ratios during shoulder movement and the function.

Effect of Core Stability Training on Correction and Surface Electronic Signals of Paravertebral in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Objective To observe the effect of 12-week core stability training on Cobb angle and the ratios of AEMG (averaged EMG) and IEMG (integral EMG) of paravertebral electromyography in thoracic and lumbar segments in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients and offer a practical-based evidence for the rehabilitation treatment for AIS patients. Methods 31 AIS female middle school students were randomly divided into an exercise group (n = 16, 12 weeks of core stability training, 3 times/week) and AIS group (n = 15). In addition, 15 female secondary school students without scoliosis were included as the normal group (the AIS group and normal group did not perform any regular physical exercise throughout the trial period and only receive regular evaluation and guidance). Before and after the experiment, the digital diagnostic equipment of Philips was used to examine the Cobb angle and Noraxon was used to measure the surface EMG signals of the back thoracic and lumbar paravertebral muscles. Results Compared with that before training, after 12 weeks of core stability training, the Cobb angle in the exercise group significantly decreased, and the ratio of AEMG (convex/concave) and IEMG (convex/concave) of paravertebral muscles in the thoracolumbar segment significantly decreased (P < 0.01, respectively); there was no significant difference in the above indicators in the AIS group before and after the experiment (P > 0.05, respectively). After 12 weeks of core stability training, compared with the AIS group, the Cobb angle decreased significantly (P < 0.01), and the ratio of AEMG (convex/concave) and IEMG (convex/concave) of paravertebral muscles in thoracolumbar segment decreased significantly (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). Compared with the normal group, the ratio of AEMG and IEMG of paravertebral muscles in thoracolumbar segment significantly increased (P < 0.01) in the AIS group (P < 0.01, respectively). Conclusions The core stability training can significantly reduce the Cobb angle of AIS and correct the bad posture of scoliosis patients, which may be related to the balance of the electromyographic activities (convex concave side) of paravertebral muscles in AIS patients.

Study on the Effect of Core Stability Training on the Recovery of Dynamic Balance Capacity After Sport Injury

Abstract Injured athletes need to do appropriate exercises to restore dynamic balance capacity. This paper briefly introduced core stability and its training. Twenty athletes with knee injuries in the Third Hospital of Shanxi Province were divided into a regular training group and a core training group, for example, analysis. The knee joint function and coordination and balance ability of both groups before and after training were tested. The results suggest that core stability training is more conducive to promoting the recovery of knee function and coordination and balance ability under dynamic and static conditions.

Perbandingan Pengaruh Latihan Core Stability Dengan Zig Zag Run Terhadap Agility Pada Pemain Sepak Bola Cabang Aceh Barat Daya

As a soccer athlete, having good agility has several advantages, including being easy to perform difficult movements, not easily falling and causing injury. Agility can be improved with core stability exercises and zig zag runs. This experiment was indentified to find out the difference in the effect of core stability training with zig zag run on increasing agility in Southwest Aceh soccer players in 2021. Respondent of this experiment are 16 people (n=16) met the inclusion criteria with 8 people in the core stability group and 8 people in the zig zag run group. The research method used is a quasi-experimental approach with two groups of pre and post test designs. The data collected was first tested for normality with the Shapiro Wilk test (n=&lt;50), the results obtained were 0.179 (preZigzag), 0.321 (preCoreStability) meaning the data was normally distributed (p&gt;0.05). Then the homogeneity test was carried out with the Levene test, the value (sig) of 0.863 (p&gt;0.05) means that there is a similarity of variance (homogeneous) between groups. Statistical analysis in both groups used Paired Sample t-test and obtained a sig value for the core Stability group of 0.000 and for the Zigzag Run group of 0.000, it can be concluded that there was a difference after being given treatment in each treatment group (p &lt;0.05). Different test of the effect of post test core Stability and zigzag Run using the Independent Sample t-test and obtained a value (sig) of 0.015. So it can be concluded that there is a difference between the treatment of group I and group II (p&lt;0.05). The conclusion is a difference in the effect of core stability and zigzag run training on increasing agility in soccer players.

Effects of core stability training on older women with low back pain: a randomized controlled trial

BackgroundStudies have demonstrated that elderly people with low back pain (LBP) may have poor postural control compared to healthy older adults. Poor postural control is associated with poor balance performance and a high risk of serious falls. A variety of training strategies are proposed for LBP therapy, particularly core stabilization training. But this treatment for older people with LBP remains unclear.Methods31 participants were randomly placed in a core stability training group (TG, n = 15) and a control group (CG, n = 16). The participants in the training group were required to complete 4 sets of core stability training and conventional physiotherapy 4 times per week for 4 weeks, whereas the participants in the control group only completed physiotherapy 4 times per week for 4 weeks. Ultrasound imaging was used to measure transverse abdominal muscle (TrA) thickness before and after the intervention. A 10-cm visual analog scale (VAS), the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and mobility functions were applied before and after the intervention. Data are reported as the median and range and were compared using two-way repeated-measures ANOVA,t-tests and chi-squared tests. P < 0.05 was considered significant in all statistical tests.ResultsAfter intervention, there was a statistically significant difference in scores in the intervention group, especially for VAS, ODI, timed up-and-go,10-m walking and the four-square step test. TrA thickness was increased after core stability training, which was not observed in the control group.ConclusionCore stability training is an effective intervention for older women with LBP.

The Effect of Eight-Week Functional Core Training on Core Stability in Young Rhythmic Gymnasts: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

It is suggested that core stability (CS) might improve rhythmic gymnasts’ performance. Nevertheless, the effect of core stability training (CST) in CS performance is not clear. Purpose: Evaluating the effect of an eight-week functional CST on young rhythmics gymnasts’ CS performance. Method: A sample of 45 young female rhythmic gymnasts from a competitive team (age = 10.5 ± 1.8 years, height = 144.1 ± 10.6 cm, weight 38.2 ± 8.9 kg, peak height velocity (PHV) = 12.2 ± 0.6 years) participated in the study. The participants were randomly allocated into the control group (CG) and experimental group (EG) and completed pre-tests and post-tests of specific CS tests using a pressure biofeedback unit (PBU). The CS was assessed by the bent knee fall out (BKFO), the active straight leg raise (ASLR) tests and the pelvic tilt test, all performed on the right and left sides. The EG (n = 23) performed an eight-week functional CST program based on rhythmic gymnastics (RG) technical requirements added to the traditional RG training sessions. Meanwhile, the CG (n = 22) received the traditional RG training sessions. Results: Mixed model analysis showed non-significant interaction effects; however, the ANOVA omnibus test showed a time effect (p < 0.05) in right BKFO (F1,42 = 4.60; p = 0.038) and both pelvic tilt tests (right F1,42 = 22.01, p < 0.001; left F1,42 = 19.13, p < 0.001). There were non-significant interaction effects. The fixed effects estimated parameters for right BKFO showed that both groups had less pressure variation after intervention compared with pre-intervention (β = −1.85 mmHg, 95%CI = [−3.54 to −0.16], t42 = −2.14, p = 0.038). Furthermore, the left pelvic tilt (β = 37.0 s, 95%CI = [20.4 to 53.6], t42 = 4.37, p < 0.001) improved 8.9 s more than the right pelvic tilt (β = 28.1 s, 95%CI = [16.3 to 39.8], t42 = 4.69, p < 0.001) considering both groups together. Conclusions: Adding a functional CST to regular training showed a trend in improving the performance of CS-related variables, which could help improve RG-specific performance. Coaches working with rhythmic gymnasts should consider adding a functional CST to regular training to improve CS performance leading to increased specific RG performance.
