Abstract

PURPOSE:To investigate the effect of core stability training in the rehabilitation of Scapular Dyskinesis(SD) in overhead athletes. METHODS:Twenty four overhead athletes with SD were randomized into two groups: the trial group(n = 12) received core stability training and scapular muscles training over a period of five weeks and the controls received scapular muscles training. Activation of muscles during overhead movement, the position of scapula, the function of shoulder were compared before and after the training. RESULTS:1. Activation of muscles during shoulder movement after training:(1)During shoulder flexion, MVC% of UT in the trial group was lower than the control group(20.94 ± 4.90 vs 32.9 ± 5.21, p < 0.05) , MVC% and RMS of LT were higher than the control group(37.55 ± 14.16 vs 26.92 ± 10.73,28.23 ± 4.53 vs 18.56 ± 6.10, p < 0.05), MVC% of SA was higher than the control group(28.23 ± 4.53 vs 18.56 ± 6.10,p < 0.05), UT/LT and UT/SA in the trial group were lower than the control group(0.32 ± 0.19 vs 0.71 ± 0.19,0.77 ± 0.18 vs 0.98 ± 0.17,p < 0.05).(2)During shoulder abduction, MVC% and RMS of LT were higher than the control group(29.68 ± 2.73 vs 19.65 ± 4.77,18.82 ± 5.13 vs 12.62 ± 2.45,p < 0.05);UT/MT and UT/LT in the trial group were lower than the control group(1.23 ± 0.47 vs 1.87 ± 0.52,1.65 ± 0.73 vs 2.01 ± 0.65,p < 0.05).(3)During PNF D2 pattern, MVC% and RMS of UT in the trial group were lower than the control group(20.66 ± 8.02 vs 29.74 ± 9.72,10.94 ± 3.42 vs 17.72 ± 7.43,p < 0.05);MVC% of LT was higher than the control group(28.99 ± 4.88 vs 20.95 ± 4.27,p < 0.05);UT/LT and UT/SA in the trial group were lower than the control group(1.08 ± 0.33 vs 1.46 ± 0.21,0.51 ± 0.25 vs 0.69 ± 0.25,p < 0.05).2. As for SI and LSST, there were no significant difference between the two groups after training.3.Function of shoulder after training: (1)DASH: score of sports section in the trial group was lower than the control group(7.81 ± 4.42 vs 13.28 ± 5.22,p < 0.05).(2)Score of Y-balance in the trail group was higher than the control group(0.97 ± 0.07 vs 0.91 ± 0.08,p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS:It is better to add core stability training before scapular muscles training in the rehabilitation program for overhead athletes with SD, as it can help improve the scapular muscles activation,scapular muscles balance ratios during shoulder movement and the function.
