Effects of exercise in adults with cancer pain: a systematic review and Network meta-analysis.

Pain is one of the most common symptoms of cancer patients, affecting the patient's physical, psychological, behavioral, social relations and other aspects. Previous studies have demonstrated that exercise is effective for cancer pain, and the optimal exercise is still unknown. This study aimed to compare the effects of different exercise interventions on cancer pain in adults. Randomized control trials identified from medical literature databases that reported effects of exercise in adults with cancer pain were included in this study. Literature screening and data extraction were conducted independently by two researchers. Cochrane Bias Assessment 2.0 was used to assess the quality of the literature, and Stata 15.0 software was used for Network meta-analysis. Forty-one studies were included, involving 3537 patients with cancer pain. The types of exercise involved included aerobic exercise, medium intensity continuous training, high-intensity interval training, resistance exercise, mind-body exercise and comprehensive exercise program (CEP). The results suggested that CEP was more effective than the usual care in relieving pain intensity in cancer patients [SMD=-1.96,95%CI (-3.47, -0.44)] (SUCRA=97.9%). Mind-body exercise outperformed usual care in reducing pain interference in cancer patients [SMD = -0.65, 95% CI (-1.21, -0.09)] (SUCRA=83.8%). Current evidence shows that CEP is the best way to relieve the pain intensity of cancer patients, and mind-body exercise is the best way to reduce pain interference of cancer patients. Due to the limited number and quality of the included studies, the above conclusions need to be further verified by more high-quality studies.

Effects of different exercise interventions on cardiopulmonary function in male tobacco-dependent college students

ABSTRACT This study investigated the effects of different exercise interventions on cardiopulmonary function in male tobacco-dependent college students. Forty-five male tobacco-dependent college students were recruited as the tobacco-dependent (TB) group, and 45 non-tobacco-dependent college students were recruited as the control group. The TB group was randomly assigned to three subgroups: non-exercise (NE), high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT). The HIIT and MICT groups underwent a 10-week exercise training, while the NE group received no intervention. Cardiac parameters, including maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), heart rate max (HRmax), and heart rate reserve (HRR), and pulmonary indicators, including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), vital capacity (VC), maximum ventilation volume (MVV), and peak expiratory flow (PEF) were investigated. The results showed that the TB group had significantly lower cardiopulmonary function than the control group. The degree of tobacco dependence was negatively correlated with VO2max, FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and MVV. Furthermore, both HIIT and MICT training improved cardiopulmonary function. HIIT training exhibited superior efficacy compared to MICT in improving HRmax, HRR, FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and PEF. In conclusion, tobacco dependence adversely affects cardiopulmonary function in male college students. Both HIIT and MICT effectively improved cardiopulmonary function, with HIIT showing superior efficacy.

Effects of Different Exercise Interventions on Cardiorespiratory Fitness, as Measured by Peak Oxygen Consumption in Patients with Coronary Heart Disease: An Overview of Systematic Reviews.

Exercise is an important component of rehabilitation care for people with coronary heart disease (CHD). The aim of this study was to critically analyze and summarize the existing evidence from published systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that have evaluated the effects of different types of exercise interventions on cardiorespiratory fitness, as measured by peak oxygen consumption in people with CHD. Electronic databases (Cochrane Library, Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, and PEDro) were searched for SRs of exercise interventions of people with CHD. Two reviewers assessed the quality of SRs using the AMSTAR-2 tool and evaluated the strength of evidence quality with the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system for relevant outcome measures. Mean difference (MD) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Thirty-one SRs (with 125 RCTs) met the study criteria, including 33,608 patients. Compared with usual care, continuous aerobic exercise produced an improvement in peak oxygen consumption, MD of 3.8mLkg-1min-1 (95% CI: 3.204.4, I2 = 67%); high-intensity interval training, MD 6.1mLkg-1min-1 (95% CI: 0.4-11.8, I2 = 97%); resistance training, MD of 2.1mLkg-1min-1 (95% CI: 0.98-3.2, I2 = 60%); combined aerobic and resistance training, MD of 3.0mLkg-1min-1 (95% CI: 2.5-3.4, I2 = 0%); and water-based exercise, MD of 4.4mLkg-1min-1 (95% CI, 2.1-6.7; I2 = 2%). Exercise interventions improve peak oxygen consumption in people with CHD. However, there was moderate to very-low certainty for the evidence found.

Evaluating the impact of exercise on intermediate disease markers in overweight and obese individuals through a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of exercise on intermediate disease markers in populations with overweight and obesity, providing evidence-based recommendations for clinicians to utilize these markers in developing exercise prescriptions for this group. The study was conducted by retrieving data from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and CNKI and only including Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) to examine the effect of different exercise interventions on intermediate disease markers in overweight and obese people. The quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Cochrane Bias Risk Assessment tool and the data was analyzed using Stata 15.1 data analysis software. The RCTs were collected from January 2017 to March 2024. A total of 56 RCTs were included and the results of 10 outcomes were analyzed using random effects meta-analysis. The total sample size used in the study was 3193 The results showed that resistance training significantly reduced total cholesterol (SUCRA: 99.9%), triglycerides (SUCRA: 100.0%), low-density lipoprotein (SUCRA: 100.0%), systolic pressure (SUCRA: 92.5%), and increased high-density lipoprotein (SUCRA: 100.0%). Aerobic exercise significantly reduced insulin (SUCRA: 89.1%) and HbA1c (SUCRA: 95.3%). Concurrent training significantly reduced HOMA-IR (SUCRA: 93.8%), diastolic blood pressure (SUCRA: 71.2%) and Glucose (SUCRA: 87.6%). Exercise has a significant impact on intermediate disease markers in populations with overweight and obese. Compared with no exercise, exercise lowers total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, HOMA-IR, insulin, and HbA1c, and increases HDL in people with overweight and obese. These findings provide evidence-based recommendations for exercise interventions aimed at weight reduction and the prevention of chronic diseases in individuals with overweight and obese.

Effect of Different Exercise Interventions on Grip Strength, Knee Extensor Strength, Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Index, and Skeletal Muscle Index Strength in Patients with Sarcopenia: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Sarcopenia is a systemic skeletal muscle disease that is more prevalent in older adults. The role of exercise in improving the disease has been demonstrated. However, due to the variety of exercise modalities, it is not clear what type of exercise provides the best benefit. The aim of this meta-analysis was to analyze the effects of different exercise modalities on grip strength, appendicular skeletal muscle index, skeletal muscle index, and knee extensor strength in elderly patients with sarcopenia. The protocol for this evaluation was registered on the PROSPERO website and the databases PubMed, WOS, Cochrane Library, and Embase were searched. Thirteen studies were included in the analysis. The results showed that exercise interventions had positive effects on grip strength and knee extension muscle strength, with resistance training being the most effective. There was no significant improvement in appendicular skeletal muscle index or skeletal muscle index. This study still has limitations. For example, age group and exercise duration were not considered. Future studies should further explore benefits in age groups as well as other relevant outcome indicators.

Physical activity improves the visual-spatial working memory of individuals with mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Our network meta-analysis aimed to ascertain the effect of physical activity on the visual-spatial working memory of individuals with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease as well as to propose tailored exercise interventions for each group. Employing a frequentist approach, we performed a network meta-analysis to compare the effectiveness of different exercise interventions in improving the visual-spatial working memory of individuals with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. Subsequently, we explored the moderating variables influencing the effectiveness of the exercise interventions through a subgroup analysis. We included 34 articles involving 3,074 participants in the meta-analysis, comprised of 1,537 participants from studies on mild cognitive impairment and 1,537 participants from studies on Alzheimer's disease. The articles included exhibited an average quality score of 6.6 (score studies) and 6.75 (reaction time [RT] studies), all passing the inconsistency test (p > 0.05). In the mild cognitive impairment literature, mind-body exercise emerged as the most effective exercise intervention (SMD = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.07-1.14). In Alzheimer's disease research, aerobic exercise was identified as the optimal exercise intervention (SMD = 0.39, 95% CI: 0.06-0.71). The results of the subgroup analysis suggest that the most effective approach to enhancing the visual-spatial working memory of individuals with mild cognitive impairment entails exercising at a frequency of three or more times per week for over 60 min each time and at a moderate intensity for more than 3 months. Suitable exercise options include mind-body exercise, multicomponent exercise, resistance exercise, and aerobic exercise. For individuals with Alzheimer's disease, we recommend moderately intense exercise twice per week for over 90 min per session and for a duration of 3 months or longer, with exercise options encompassing aerobic exercise and resistance exercise.

The Effects of Different Exercise Interventions on Patients with Subjective Cognitive Decline: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis

Background and ObjectiveExercise is a promising non-pharmacological therapy for subjective cognitive decline, but it is unclear which type of exercise is most effective. The objective was to assess the comparative effects and ranks of all exercise-based interventions on cognitive function in patients with subjective cognitive decline (SCD).MethodIn this network meta-analysis, Online databases for Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Medline, Cochrane Library and PsycINFO were searched from inception to April 30, 2023. The included studies are randomized controlled trials assessing the efficacy of exercise interventions for individuals with SCD. The primary outcome measure is memory, while secondary outcome measures encompass executive function, attention, verbal fluency, and global cognitive function. Represented using Standardized Mean Differences (SMDs) along with their 95% Confidence Intervals (CIs). Bias assessment was conducted in accordance with the ‘Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tool, 2nd Edition’ (RoB 2). Pairwise meta-analysis was carried out using the ‘meta-analysis’ module within STATA 14.0, and network meta-analysis was performed using the ‘mvmeta’ and ‘network’ packages available in STATA 14.0. Registration number CRD42023289687.ResultThis study included a total of 11 randomized controlled trials, encompassing 1,166 patients. Mind-body exercise was found to be efficacious in enhancing or sustaining memory (SMD: 0.58, 95%CI: 0.06 ∼ 1.10) and executive function (SMD: 0.41, 95%CI: 0.09 ∼ 0.73) in individuals with subjective cognitive decline. Furthermore, mind-body exercise exhibited the highest probability of being the most effective measures for improving or preventing the decline in memory (surface under cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) value: 90.4) and executive function (SUCRA value: 91.8). The second-ranked moderate-intensity aerobic exercise has also shown a positive effect on the improvement of executive function in patients with subjective cognitive decline (SMD: 0.23, 95%CI: 0.03 ∼ 0.43, SUCRA value: 68.2). However, we did not observe a significant effectiveness of exercise interventions on verbal fluency, attention, and overall cognitive function in subjective cognitive decline.ConclusionMind-body exercise may potentially be the optimal strategies for enhancing memory and executive function in individuals with subjective cognitive decline. Additionally, moderate-intensity aerobic exercise has shown a modest positive effect on executive function in subjective cognitive decline. When resources permit, practical application of these findings may be considered. Nevertheless, further support for the conclusions of this study is warranted through larger sample sizes and well-designed multicenter trials.

Effectiveness of exercise intervention in relieving symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis: A network meta-analysis.

Ankylosing spondylitis(AS) is a chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease that leads to a reduced quality of life. Exercise appears to be one of the promising modes of intervention. The aim of this study was to review the available evidence and compare the effectiveness of different exercises in relieving symptoms of AS. We searched the Pubmed, WOS, EMbase, CNKI, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases. The search has spanned from the creation of the database until September 15, 2023. We extracted the first author, year of article publication, sample information, intervention, duration of intervention, and outcome indicators from the literature that met the inclusion criteria. The Cochrane Risk Assessment Tool was used to assess the risk of bias for included studies. I² was used to judge the consistency of the included studies. Egger's test and Begg's test were used to judge whether there was significant publication bias. Forest plots were used to compare intervention effects and SUCRA was provided to rank the effects of the interventions. This study has been registered in PROSPERO(No. CRD42024518522). After screening, 10 papers matched the inclusion criteria for this study, and the total sample size of the 10 papers was 623. Upon analysis, the papers included in this study did not have significant publication bias (Begg's Test P = 0.210) and had good consistency (P>0.05). The direct comparisons showed that Running, Pilates, Stretching, Yoga, and Tai Chi were more effective interventions than traditional therapies. The effect sizes, confidence intervals, and number of studies for each intervention are shown below: Running [MD -1.90 (95% CI -3.14,-0.66) n = 1], Pilates [MD -1.70 (95% CI -2.90,-0.51) n = 1], Stretching [MD -1.54 (95% CI -2.21,-0.88) n = 4], Yoga [MD -1.24 (95% CI -2.18,-0.30) n = 1], Tai Chi [MD -0.78 (95% CI -1.44,-0.12) n = 2], Exergame[MD -0.80 (95% CI -1.99,0.39) n = 1], Swiss balls[MD -1.07 (95% CI -2.58,0.44) n = 1]. The indirect comparisons showed that the range of effect sizes for each sport intervention intersected the null line. Based on cumulative probability, the order of effectiveness of different exercises in relieving AS symptoms is Running, Pilates, Stretching, Yoga, Tai Chi, Exergame, and Swiss ball. Running, Pilates, Stretching, Yoga, and Tai Chi provided significant relief from AS symptoms. Exergame and Swiss ball were not statistically significant in relieving AS symptoms. There were no significant differences in the effectiveness of different exercise interventions in relieving AS symptoms. Running may have the most beneficial effect on alleviating AS symptoms.

Efficacy of Different Exercises on Mild to Moderate Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

The aims of this study are to evaluate the effectiveness of different exercise interventions on patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and to provide evidence-based exercise prescriptions for this population. The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CNKI, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), VIP, and Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform were searched until January 2023. The data were pooled and a meta-analysis was conducted. A total of 19 studies were conducted with 778 participants. The Schroth exercises group (mean difference = -3.48, 95% confidence interval = -4.73 to -2.23, P < 0.00001) and strength training group (mean difference = -3.43, 95% confidence interval = -4.06 to -2.80, P < 0.00001) had better recovery of the Cobb angle than the other groups. The Cobb angle rehabilitation effect was good in the time of less than 60-min group. In addition, there was no significant difference found between the different intervention periods groups ( P > 0.05). Schroth exercise and strength training significantly improved Cobb angle of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients; exercising for less than 60 mins is effective for Cobb angle rehabilitation, but prolonging exercise time cannot improve training effectiveness; 12 wks of exercise significantly improved Cobb angle, but prolonged training periods did not have a significant impact.

Stata 16.0 software was used for both a pairwise meta-analysis and a series of frequentist network meta-analyses (NMA).ResultsA total of 35 RCTs and 5393 participants were included. Aerobic exercise had the most significant effect on depressive symptoms (66.2%), followed by group training (62.5%), resistance exercise (59.0%), and aerobic combined with resistance exercise (57.9%). Furthermore, children and adolescents younger than 15 years showed significant improvement in depressive symptoms (SMD=-0.41, 95% CI (-0.63, -0.19), P < 0.01). The study also found a significant improvement in depression among healthy, obesity, and depressed populations (SMD=-0.25, 95% CI (-0.41, -0.08), P < 0.01); SMD=-0.15, 95% CI (-0.31, -0.00), P < 0.01; SMD=-0.75, 95% CI (-1.32, -0.19), P < 0.01). Additionally, 30 min of exercise had a significant effect (SMD=-0.14, 95% CI (-0,81, -0.01), P < 0.01), and 40–50 min of exercise had the best effect (SMD=-0.17, 95% CI (-0,33, -0.02), P < 0.01). Lastly, exercise frequency of three times per week was significant in children and adolescents (SMD=-0.42, 95% CI (-0,66, -0.18), P < 0.01).ConclusionExercise significantly improves depressive symptoms in children and adolescents, with aerobic exercise having the most significant effect. A 12-week, three-times-a-week, 40-50-minute exercise intervention was found to be more effective in younger children and adolescents.

Comparative effectiveness of different exercise interventions for elderly patients with hip fracture: A systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis protocol of randomized controlled trials.

Exercise intervention (EI) is a promising and economical way for elderly patients with hip fracture, but the evidence regarding effective EIs remains fragmented and controversial, and it is unclear which type of exercise is optimal. The purpose of this Bayesian network meta-analysis (NMA) is to compare and rank the efficacy of various EIs in elderly patients with hip fracture. A comprehensive literature search was performed using a systematic approach across various databases including Medline (via PubMed), CINAHL, CNKI, Web of Science, Wan Fang, Embase, VIP, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and CBM databases. The search encompasses all available records from the inception of each database until December 2022. The Inclusion literature comprises randomized controlled trials that incorporate at least one EI for elderly patients with hip fracture. We will assess the risk of bias of the studies in accordance with the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions, and assess each evidence of outcome quality in accordance with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation framework. The NMA will be performed by STATA 15.0 software and OpenBUGS version 3.2.3. The identification of publication bias will be accomplished through the utilization of a funnel plot. We will rank the EIs effects according to the cumulative ranking probability curve (surface under the cumulative ranking area, SUCRA). The primary outcomes will be hip function in elderly patients, and the secondary outcomes will be activities of daily living, walking capacity and balance ability of elderly patients. P073 Comparative effectiveness of different exercise interventions on central sensitisation indices in humans: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

Abstract Background/Aims Exercise has shown a promising effect in reducing central sensitisation (CS), but it is unknown which exercise type is the most effective. This review aimed to rank and compare the effectiveness of different exercise interventions on CS in people with or without chronic musculoskeletal pain. This will help to identify the optimal exercise intervention to improve pain by reducing CS for subsequent use in clinical trials. Methods We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, CENTRAL, PEdro, SCOPUS, as well as references cited in the selected papers, and grey literature from inception to February 2022. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that assessed the effect of exercise interventions on CS indices in humans. RCTs where a specific effect of exercise could not be determined were excluded. Pairwise and network meta-analyses (frequentist and Bayesian) were conducted using random effects models. Effect sizes were calculated using standardized mean difference (SMD). P-score as well as SUCRA score were used to rank the exercise interventions (from best to worst) in both frequentist and Bayesian approaches, respectively. Results The search returned 93,657 records, of which 143 RCTs (5,362 participants [4890 participants had musculoskeletal pain (122 studies), and 427 were pain free (21 studies)]) were eligible. Firstly, we performed the pairwise meta-analysis to examine the effect of all exercise interventions on all CS outcomes. It showed moderate improvement of CS outcomes (SMD - 0.77, 95% confidence interval (95%CI) -0.89 to -0.65, I2 = 87%, p &amp;lt; 0.01). After that, 80 RCTs were included in the network meta-analysis (NMA) using inactive controls as a common comparator. In terms of efficacy at improving indices of CS, all exercise interventions were more effective than control. Combined strengthening and stretching exercise exhibited the highest probability to be the optimal intervention reducing CS (P-score: 0.8896, SUCRA score: 0.8719, SMD= -2.02, 95%CI: -2.83: -1.20), followed by strengthening, stretching and aerobic combination (P-score: 0.8557, SUCRA score: 0.8517, SMD = -1.92, 95%CI: -2.90: -0.95), and stretching with aerobic exercise (P-score: 0.7794, SUCRA score: 0.7198, SMD = -1.70, 95%CI: -2.79: -0.62). However, differences between these three interventions’ effect sizes were small, and 95% CI were overlapping. Other interventions included, mind body exercise, aerobic plus strengthening exercise, strengthening exercise, stretching exercise, aerobic exercise. Conclusion Our meta-analysis suggested that various exercise interventions are effective in improving CS. Multicomponent exercise tends to be the most effective, but some exercise combinations might be better than others. Strengthening and stretching combination shows the greatest likelihood among other combinations of being the optimal exercise type. These findings might have utility informing future treatment recommendations for people with CS features. Which Specific Exercise Models Are Most Effective on Global Cognition in Patients with Cognitive Impairment? A Network Meta-Analysis.

(1) Introduction: Physical exercise interventions can impart significant cognitive benefits to older adults suffering from cognitive impairment (CI). However, the efficacy of these interventions can vary widely, depending on the type, intensity, duration and frequency of exercise. (2) Aim: To systematically review the efficacy of exercise therapy on global cognition in patients with CI using a network meta-analysis (NMA). (3) Methods: The PubMed, Embase, Sport Discus (EBSCO) and Cochrane Library databases were electronically searched to collect randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on exercise for patients with CI from inception to 7 August 2022. Two reviewers independently screened the literature, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias of the included studies. The NMA was performed using the consistency model. (4) Results: A total of 29 RCTs comprising 2458 CI patients were included. The effects of different types of exercise on patients with CI were ranked as follows: multicomponent exercise (SMD = 0.84, 95% CI 0.31 to 1.36, p = 0.002), short duration (≤45 min) (SMD = 0.83, 95% CI 0.18 to 1.19, p = 0.001), vigorous intensity (SMD = 0.77, 95% CI 0.18 to 1.36, p = 0.011) and high frequency (5-7 times/week) (SMD = 1.28, 95% CI 0.41 to 2.14, p = 0.004). (5) Conclusion: These results suggested that multicomponent, short-duration, high-intensity, and high-frequency exercise may be the most effective type of exercise in improving global cognition in CI patients. Which exercise interventions are more helpful in treating primary obesity in young adults? A systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis.

Network meta-analysis was used to evaluate the effectiveness of different exercise interventions in the treatment of obesity in young people and recommend the most suitable exercise method. We searched five electronic databases for articles on obesity treatment in the youth population from inception to April 2022. The two researchers independently retrieved and screened the articles, carried out a quality assessment and data extraction, and carried out a network meta-analysis in the Bayesian framework in Stata software. A total of 32 original studies were included in the study, all randomized controlled trials (RCTs). High-intensity aerobic exercise may be the best way to reduce the weight of obese people; high-intensity aerobic training combined with resistance training may be the best way to reduce BMI and FAT%; moderate-intensity aerobic training combined with resistance training may be the best way to reduce the waistline; high-intensity aerobic exercise may be the best way to boost VO2max. Exercise interventions such as high-intensity aerobic training combined with resistance training can be considered and promoted as a non-drug treatment for primary obesity in young adults.

Effects of Different Exercise Therapies on Balance Function and Functional Walking Ability in Multiple Sclerosis Disease Patients-A Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

The objective of this research is to assess the effects of seven different exercise therapies (aquatic exercise, aerobic exercise, yoga, Pilates, virtual reality exercise, whole-body vibration exercise, and resistance exercise) on the balance function and functional walking ability of multiple sclerosis disease patients. Materials and Methods: The effects of different exercise interventions on the balance function and functional walking ability in people with multiple sclerosis were assessed by searching five databases: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and CNKI; only randomized controlled trials were included. The included studies were assessed for risk of bias using the Cochrane assessment tool. Results: The RCTs were collected between the initial date of the electronic databases’ creation and May 2022. We included 31 RCTs with 904 patients. The results of the collected data analysis showed that yoga can significantly improve patients’ BBS scores (SUCRA = 79.7%) and that aquatic exercise can significantly decrease patients’ TUG scores (SUCRA = 78.8%). Conclusion: Based on the network meta-analysis, we suggest that although each type of exercise is useful, yoga, virtual reality training, and aerobic training are more effective in improving the balance function of people with MS; aquatic exercise, virtual reality training, and aerobic training are more effective in improving the functional walking ability of people with MS.

The therapeutic effects of distinct exercise types on metabolic syndrome-induced reproductive system impairment in male rats: Potential contribution of mitochondria-related genes.

A sedentary lifestyle and high fructose dietary habits cause diseases, such as metabolic syndrome (MS). The study was aimed to investigate the potential ameliorative effects of different exercise interventions on high fructose-induced MS-mediated reproductive system disruption of male rats. Rats were divided into four groups (n=6): Control, MS, MS+aerobic exercise (AE) and MS+anaerobic exercise (ANE). MS was induced by using tap water containing 30% fructose for 8weeks. After the induction of MS, AE/ANE implementations were started for 6weeks. Testis tissue and serum samples of rats were stored for biochemical and molecular analyses. Serum total antioxidant status level increased in the MS+AE group compared to all groups. Also, serum total oxidant status level, which increased by MS, decreased with AE, but not altered with ANE. Moreover, MS markedly decreased serum luteinizing hormone, but not changed the follicle-stimulating hormone. However, serum hormone levels were similar to the control group in both MS+AE and MS+ANE groups. MS upregulated mitochondria-related genes' mRNA expressions (MFN2, PGC1A, PPARG, PARP2 and TXNL4B). These increases, except for PPARG, were normalized with both exercise types. These results revealed that mitochondria-related genes may have a crucial role in MS-mediated male reproductive impairment and therapeutic effects of exercises.

Effects of Different Exercise Interventions on Cardiac Autonomic Control and Secondary Health Factors in Middle-Aged Adults: A Systematic Review.

This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines to summarize the existing literature on the effects of different exercise interventions on cardiac autonomic control and secondary health factors. Resting heart rate variability (HRV) was used as indicator of cardiac autonomic control. Secondary factors were related to factors that contribute to cardiovascular health. Studies examining the effects of endurance, resistance, multimodal, or coordinative training interventions in healthy participants aged between 45 and 60 years old on average were considered. The methodological quality of the studies was examined using two assessment scales (TESTEX and STARDHRV). PROSPERO registration number: CRD42020206606. The literature review retrieved eight studies fulfilling all inclusion criteria. Cardiac autonomic control and cardiovascular health improved after endurance and multimodal interventions. Resistance training had no significant impact on HRV or any secondary health factor. Coordinative exercise interventions showed inconclusive results regarding HRV but showed significant improvements in secondary health factors. The quality assessment tools revealed some methodological and reporting deficits. Despite the small number of studies, we suggest endurance and multimodal interventions including aerobic exercises for the enhancement of cardiac autonomic control and the reduction of cardiovascular risk in middle-aged adults. Further studies need to be conducted to examine the long-term effects of exercise in the midlife period.

Exercise Intervention For Prevention Of Sarcopenia In The Elderly

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the preventive effects of different exercise interventions on sarcopenia in elderly women by take exercise intervention on Chinese female elderly population. METHODS: Subjects: 260 sarcopenia female subjects were from China (61.2 ± 10.1 yrs) and 48 of them were lost to follow-up. They were randomly divided into Aerobic Exercise(AE) intervention group (n = 75), Resistance Exercise(RE) intervention group (n = 68) and Control group (n = 69). All signed informed consent.Intervention methods: 3 times a week, 60 minutes/per, 12 weeks. AE: Walking, jogging, swimming, tai chi and aerobics. RE: With the help of a chair,elastic belt,dumbbell for large muscle groups and multi-joint training, respectively by 40%, 50%, 60% 1RM exercise for 4 weeks. Test indicators: Height, Weight, Muscle Mass, Grip Strength (GS), Chair Sit to Stand (STS), Timed Up and Go (TUG). They were tested before intervention and 12 weeks after training. ANOVA by using SPSS20.0. RESULTS: 1. RE can significantly increase muscle mass. The muscle mass increased by 2.8% in the RE group significantly higher than that in the other two groups (P < 0.05). The body fat rate of AE group decreased by 2.3%, which was significantly higher than other two groups (P < 0.05). 2. RE can significantly increase muscle strength. The GS in the RE group increased by 13.1%, higher than that AE group (increased by 8.4%) and control group (increased by 3.6%) (P < 0.05). RE and AE can significantly improve physical activity function. Compared with the control group, the STS in the AE group and RE group were significantly improved (-18.1% and -15.6%), and the TUG were significantly reduced (1.7% and 11.0%) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Exercise intervention has a positive prevention and treatment effect on sarcopenia in elderly women. Resistance exercise can improve muscle mass, muscle strength and physical activity function, aerobic exercise can improve the physical activity function of elderly women.
