Integrating Nursing and Family Medicine: A Comprehensive Review of Interdisciplinary Approaches in Patient-Centered Care

This review explores the integration of nursing and family medicine in promoting patient-centered care through interdisciplinary approaches. Family medicine and nursing play complementary roles in primary healthcare, with nurses increasingly involved in collaborative efforts to address complex patient needs. This article examines current models of interdisciplinary collaboration, including team-based care and the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), and their impact on patient outcomes, cost-efficiency, and holistic care delivery. Additionally, the review highlights barriers to integration, such as role ambiguity, communication challenges, and institutional constraints, and offers strategies for overcoming these obstacles, including interdisciplinary training, supportive policies, and integrated health IT systems. Case studies of successful integration are presented, underscoring the practical benefits of collaborative care. The review concludes with implications for practice, suggesting that integrating nursing into family medicine enhances patient-centered care, especially in managing chronic conditions and preventive care. Democratizing uncertainty quantification

Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) is vital to safety-critical model-based analyses, but the widespread adoption of sophisticated UQ methods is limited by technical complexity. In this paper, we introduce UM-Bridge (the UQ and Modeling Bridge), a high-level abstraction and software protocol that facilitates universal interoperability of UQ software with simulation codes. It breaks down the technical complexity of advanced UQ applications and enables separation of concerns between experts. UM-Bridge democratizes UQ by allowing effective interdisciplinary collaboration, accelerating the development of advanced UQ methods, and making it easy to perform UQ analyses from prototype to High Performance Computing (HPC) scale.In addition, we present a library of ready-to-run UQ benchmark problems, all easily accessible through UM-Bridge. These benchmarks support UQ methodology research, enabling reproducible performance comparisons. We demonstrate UM-Bridge with several scientific applications, harnessing HPC resources even using UQ codes not designed with HPC support.

Interdisciplinary research in artificial intelligence: Lessons from COVID-19

Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI) is widely regarded as one of the most promising technologies for advancing science, fostering innovation, and solving global challenges. Recent years have seen a push for teamwork between experts from different fields and AI specialists, but the outcomes of these collaborations have yet to be studied. We focus on approximately 15,000 papers at the intersection of AI and COVID-19—arguably one of the major challenges of recent decades—and show that interdisciplinary collaborations between medical professionals and AI specialists have largely resulted in publications with low visibility and impact. Our findings suggest that impactful research depends less on the overall interdisciplinary of author teams and more on the diversity of knowledge they actually harness in their research. We conclude that team composition significantly influences the successful integration of new computational technologies into science and that obstacles still exist to effective interdisciplinary collaborations in the realm of AI.

Brain image data processing using collaborative data workflows on Texera.

In the realm of neuroscience, mapping the three-dimensional (3D) neural circuitry and architecture of the brain is important for advancing our understanding of neural circuit organization and function. This study presents a novel pipeline that transforms mouse brain samples into detailed 3D brain models using a collaborative data analytics platform called "Texera." The user-friendly Texera platform allows for effective interdisciplinary collaboration between team members in neuroscience, computer vision, and data processing. Our pipeline utilizes the tile images from a serial two-photon tomography/TissueCyte system, then stitches tile images into brain section images, and constructs 3D whole-brain image datasets. The resulting 3D data supports downstream analyses, including 3D whole-brain registration, atlas-based segmentation, cell counting, and high-resolution volumetric visualization. Using this platform, we implemented specialized optimization methods and obtained significant performance enhancement in workflow operations. We expect the neuroscience community can adopt our approach for large-scale image-based data processing and analysis.

Whispers of Consciousness: the Interplay of Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Anesthesia

Introduction: the interplay between surgery, internal medicine, and anesthesia is fundamental to the comprehensive care of patients, particularly in complex clinical scenarios. Understanding the dynamics of these interactions is crucial for improving patient outcomes and advancing healthcare practices.Objective: to review the existing literature on the collaboration between surgery, internal medicine, and anesthesia, identifying key areas of synergy, challenges, technological impacts, and future directions for research and practice.Methods: An extensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed and Google Scholar, using a combination of keywords related to surgery, internal medicine, anesthesia, patient care, and interdisciplinary collaboration. 22 relevant articles were selected based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, with a focus on those that explored the integration and outcomes of these medical disciplines. Data were synthesized through thematic analysis.Results: the review highlights the significance of interdisciplinary collaboration in optimizing patient care, the role of technological advancements in bridging gaps between disciplines, and the ethical and patient-centered considerations that underpin successful integration. Education and training emerge as critical components for fostering effective collaboration.Conclusions: effective interdisciplinary collaboration between surgery, internal medicine, and anesthesia is pivotal for enhancing patient outcomes. Future research should focus on addressing identified gaps, particularly in the integration of technology and the development of ethical guidelines for complex patient care

Interdisciplinary cooperation in the outpatient practice: results from a focus group interview with occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and physiotherapists / Gestaltung der interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit in der ambulanten Therapie: Resultate eines Fokusgruppeninterviews mit Ergotherapeut*innen, Logopäd*innen und Physiotherapeut*innen

Abstract The complexity and diversity of healthcare conditions, as well as the financial and personnel challenges requires effective interdisciplinary collaboration (IDC) among various healthcare professionals (Robert-Bosch-Stiftung, 2011; Robert Koch Institute, 2015). In contrast to the inpatient practice, IDC has not established yet in primary care settings. There is a lack of concrete solutions that illustrate how IDC can be implemented in outpatient practice (Schmitz, Atzeni & Berchtold, 2020). The study aims to present realization possibilities of the IDC among occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and physiotherapists based on case examples from outpatient neurorehabilitation practices. Necessary framework conditions and support factors should be identified from successful applications. In an online focus group, five therapists from three outpatient therapy centers were interviewed about the interdisciplinary measures taking place at their workplace. The therapy centers implemented interdisciplinary team meetings, collaborative target setting and therapy planning as well as co-therapies in their everyday primary care practice. Digital communication channels and the use of digital practice software represent support measures that enable communication independent of location and time. Educational policy changes are needed to impart the corresponding attitudes, knowledge and skills to the healthcare professionals during the vocational training/study. The results of the study show that IDC can be implemented in the outpatient setting under appropriate conditions. Legal requirements are needed to enable the application of interdisciplinary measures through adequate remuneration systems and available time slots. Further calls address content in vocational trainings/studies to provide a basis for readiness and competencies for IDC.

Unveiling the landscape: Investigating education, skills, job description, and challenges in sonography professions and framework development

IntroductionThis paper discusses the current medical sonographer status in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The paper explores the current education, skills, job description, and challenges towards developing sonography professions and a sonographer framework. MethodsThe study employed a quantitative descriptive research approach using a cross-sectional study design to collect and analyse data from sonographers in the UAE. Data was collected through a structured survey that included sections addressing demographic information, education, skills, current practices, and challenges. ResultsThe data showed a relatively even distribution across different age groups, with a higher proportion falling in the 31–40 age range. Females constitute a slightly higher percentage (55.9 %) than males (44.1 %). The study found that sonographers have the necessary skills and knowledge to interpret the scan results and provide a formal report. A significant percentage of participants taught ultrasound to others and participated in research activities. The survey responses indicate difficulty in reporting sonograms. ConclusionsThe study found that sonographers possess the necessary expertise and skills to pass on their knowledge to trainees and colleagues. The participants expressing a desire to increase their knowledge and skills indicate that sonographers recognised that continuous professional development is crucial for staying updated with advancements in the field. The participant's “Advanced Practitioners” title recommendation suggests a desire for professional recognition, career progression, and specialisations in sonography. Effective interdisciplinary collaboration is important for providing quality patient care. Implication for practiceThe paper emphasises the importance of recognising sonography as a vital healthcare profession. It aims to raise awareness about the crucial role of sonographers in patient care. The study also stresses the need for a well-defined career progression framework to guide professional growth and acknowledgement.

Understanding feeding complexity and culture in the NICU: A qualitative study

While much has been published about family and infant contributions to feeding, less is known about neonatal professionals' perspectives on feeding complexity. Researchers employed a descriptive qualitative design to explore roles, feeding culture, aspects of skillful feeding, and enablers and barriers influencing feeding within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Thirteen interdisciplinary professionals participated in one of four focus groups. Transcribed interviews were thematically coded; cross-case analysis, reflexivity, and triangulation promoted research integrity. Three activity-focused feeding themes emerged: ‘doing,’ ‘doing with others,’ and ‘doing for others.’ Feeding success was attributed to familiarity with the infant and family, self-efficacy, specialized education, collaborative communication, and “knowing” the infant. In promotion of feeding success, professionals may advocate for caregiver continuity and infant-driven feeding, encourage continuous parent involvement, and facilitate effective interdisciplinary collaboration.

What affects the implementation of lifestyle interventions in patients with osteoarthritis? A multidisciplinary focus group study among healthcare professionals

Purpose To identify factors affecting the implementation of lifestyle interventions (LIs) in patients with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis (OA) from the perspective of primary and secondary healthcare professionals (HCPs) in the Dutch healthcare system. Methods Multidisciplinary focus groups were composed. Data analysis was performed following thematic analysis. The Tailored Implementation for Chronic Diseases checklist was used to guide data analysis. Results Four focus groups meetings were conducted with 38 participating HCPs (general practitioners (or in-training), orthopedic surgeons (or in-training), physiotherapists, dieticians, a general practice assistant, lifestyle counselors, and nurse practitioners). Influencing factors were grouped into nine themes: (1) intervention factors; (2) individual HCP factors; (3) patient factors; (4) professional interactions; (5) incentives and resources; (6) capacity for organizational change; (7) social, political and legal factors; (8) patient and HCP interactions; and (9) disease factors. Conclusions A wide variety of factors affecting the implementation of LIs was identified in this study, where the importance of effective interdisciplinary collaboration was emphasized by the multidisciplinary group of participants. This thorough analysis of influencing factors is an important first step toward improved implementation of LIs within OA care. Further research is required to identify the most significant targets for change in daily practice. Implications for Rehabilitation The implementation of lifestyle interventions (LIs) by healthcare professionals (HCPs) in patients with hip and/or knee osteoarthritis (OA) is affected by both individual and environmental factors. The influencing factors identified in this study can support the development of interventions aimed at improving the implementation of LIs in OA care. A multilevel approach is required when developing interventions to improve the implementation of LIs in OA care. Continued efforts of both primary and secondary HCPs and policymakers are needed in order to promote the use of LIs within OA care.

Teaching Intellectual Humility Is Essential in Preparing Collaborative Future Pharmacists

Interprofessional teams contribute significantly to patient care and safety. However, barriers to effective interdisciplinary collaboration have been identified, such as power dynamics and mistrust among team members, contrasting ideologies, interests and levels of engagement of clinicians, and disciplinary territoriality, which could negatively impact patient care. Teaching current health professional students behaviors and personal values that promote collaboration is critical in equipping them to function effectively in an interdisciplinary care setting. In this commentary, we put forward the idea that teaching intellectual humility is important in preparing collaborative future pharmacists. The core dimensions of intellectual humility, namely, open-mindedness, intellectual modesty, engagement, and corrigibility are important behaviors that could address the above-mentioned barriers, and promote successful interdisciplinary collaboration. Furthermore, we suggest strategies through which student pharmacists could be taught intellectual humility, mainly within the interprofessional education setting.

Effects of Telerehabilitation on Patient Adherence to a Rehabilitation Plan: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Trial.

BackgroundStrong evidence supports beginning stroke rehabilitation as soon as the patient’s medical status has stabilized and continuing following discharge from acute care. However, adherence to rehabilitation treatments over the rehabilitation phase has been shown to be suboptimal.ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to assess the impact of a telerehabilitation platform on stroke patients’ adherence to a rehabilitation plan and on their level of reintegration into normal social activities, in comparison with usual care. The primary outcome is patient adherence to stroke rehabilitation (up to 12 weeks), which is hypothesized to influence reintegration into normal living. Secondary outcomes for patients include functional recovery and independence, depression, adverse events related to telerehabilitation, use of services (up to 6 months), perception of interprofessional shared decision making, and quality of services received. Interprofessional collaboration as well as quality of interprofessional shared decision making will be measured with clinicians.MethodsIn this interrupted time series with a convergent qualitative component, rehabilitation teams will be trained to develop rehabilitation treatment plans that engage the patient and family, while taking advantage of a telerehabilitation platform to deliver the treatment. The intervention will be comprised of 220 patients who will take part in stroke telerehabilitation with an interdisciplinary group of clinicians (telerehabilitation group) versus face-to-face standard of care (control group: n=110 patients).ResultsOur Research Ethics Board approved the study in June 2020. Data collection for the control group is underway, with another year planned before we begin the intervention phase.ConclusionsThis study will contribute to the minimization of both knowledge and practice gaps, while producing robust, in-depth data on the factors related to the effectiveness of telerehabilitation in a stroke rehabilitation continuum. Abstract There is ample and growing evidence of the damage to human and planetary health from environmental pollution and climate change. National and international legal frameworks provide opportunities for strategic legal challenges to government inaction (whether as the primary polluter or for a failure to regulate a third-party polluter) and to industry polluters. Public health professionals need to understand how litigation can be used as a public health tool to advance policies to address environmental and health challenges. Sage Publications.] A positive court decision can require governments to take immediate and long-term action or require polluters to cease, clean up and compensate. Successful national court decisions also provide precedents for legal action in other countries. If action in national courts fails or is not possible, legal action may be taken in European and international courts and tribunals. When legal action fails, or there is no decision, strategic litigation can still focus national and international media coverage and draw public attention to real or potential harms caused by government or industry action or inaction. Public health, environmental and human rights advocates can make better use of strategic litigation to address environmental harms and advance climate change mitigation and adaptation. Most European countries have already seen some strategic litigation on climate change. Litigation based on international and European human rights frameworks is also gaining ground. The workshop will examine the elements of strategic litigation and current cases in European courts. The workshop will follow a planned pre-conference webinar on public health, climate change and strategic litigation sponsored by EUPHA in October 2021. Key messages Strategic litigation supported by effective interdisciplinary collaboration can strengthen government resolve and stimulate action to address environmental and climate goals. Strategic litigation can advance public health objectives even without a favourable court decision. Its value includes the publicity and awareness generated and engagement of multiple stakeholders.

Encouraging Interdisciplinary Collaboration: A Study of Enablers and Inhibitors Across Silos in Higher Education

Within UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) there is evidence of limited interdisciplinary communication and engagement (Macfarlane, 2006). The focus on discipline-based working practices has created a lack of awareness regarding research taking place elsewhere that may overlap with or bolster work being undertaken by the researcher (Bess & Dee, 2012). Teams that work across discipline-based boundaries acknowledge their differences and work to build trust through finding the strengths in researcher differences, and in so doing are more likely to succeed in collaboration (Johnston et al, 2011). This article builds upon the work of Siemens et al (2014) who developed a model for effective interdisciplinary collaboration. The research looked at the impact of, and engagement with, interdisciplinary collaboration on individual researchers and their differing needs. Through identifying the enablers and inhibitors of interdisciplinary activities in addition to the different needs and approaches of researchers at different stages of their careers, a framework for best practice has been developed.

Unpacking two design for health living lab approaches for more effective interdisciplinary collaboration

This paper provides an overview of a research project that aimed to build understanding of resonances/differences across cultural contexts related to two design for health living labs, one based in a hospital in New Zealand and one with a more community focus based in a University in the United Kingdom. A series of collaborative workshops between designers and health practitioners and researchers during four exchanges were held in Auckland and Sheffield to unpack the approaches and projects of the two. Using the labs as case studies we explore how to best develop creative, dynamic and innovative approaches to developing new healthcare solutions. While the two labs operated in different contexts, we identified similar challenges when undertaking design for health projects, with respect to how to bring these different disciplines together for collaborative activities. The paper reflects on the findings of the study and ends with recommendations for future research and the development of strategies to support inter-disciplinary design for health collaborations.

Interdisciplinary collaborations between statisticians and other subject matter experts can be fruitful endeavors that result in a deeper, more holistic approach to a problem and generate a better, more innovative solution. However, multidisciplinary collaborations only true become interdisciplinary when all team members are committed to developing a mutual understanding and respect of others’ backgrounds. By proactively preparing for the collaboration experience and becoming an effective translator of complex statistical terminology and concepts, the individual statistician can help his or her team develop the critical elements outlined in the focal article.

Anderson-Cook, Lu, and Parker’s article offers numerous suggestions for ways statisticians can facilitate effective interdisciplinary collaboration, with particular focus on project teams. Their article comes at a time when the importance of collaboration to support innovation is becoming more broadly recognized, bringing with it the inherent challenges of engaging in collaboration. In our discussion, we expand on Anderson-Cook et al.’s insights by describing our experiences working with collaborators from different disciplines and sectors. We contextualize our recommendations with examples of collaborations from our organization, the Laboratory for Analytic Sciences.

Effective interdisciplinary collaboration between statisticians and other subject matter experts

Progress and innovative solutions to challenging problems often come at the intersection of multiple disciplines. Statisticians frequently are presented with opportunities to participate on or lead interdisciplinary teams, where how well their contributions are received is a function of their effectiveness as collaborators. In this article, we outline six fundamentals for effective collaboration: respect, shared common goals, trust, commitment, intercommunication, and execution. We focus on how these core aspects of a successful collaboration can be encouraged by statisticians. Through an example, we illustrate how problems can arise when some of the key components are missing and what strategies can be used to mitigate problems. Finally, we describe how early career statisticians can work to improve their collaboration skills to improve their impact on teams with diverse backgrounds.
