Research on Intercultural Communication Ability Training Strategies in College English Education in Cangzhou Open University in Hebei Province, China

As economic globalization continues to advance, the importance of Chinese-English intercultural communication skills becomes increasingly evident. In order to effectively cultivate more skilled professionals in society, this study observed and investigated the English language teaching environment and situation at Cangzhou Open University. Through questionnaire surveys and face-to-face interviews with students and English teachers, the researcher collected relevant data and content, and identified existing issues in intercultural communication within English teaching.By the analysis of the data and the scientific classification of the conversation content summary, the researcher proposed effective methods for improving current English language teaching methods and recommended effective intercultural communication cultivating strategies in English teaching.

Effective Communication: Digital, Informational, Sociolinguistic Aspects (European Experience)

The modern era of digital technologies and globalization has led to significant changes in approaches to communication. The present paper analyzes how digital, informational and sociolinguistic aspects influence the processes of effective communication, with a special focus on the European experience. The impact of digital transformation, information transparency, linguistic diversity and cultural adaptation on communication processes in modern society has been considered. The research has found that digitalization contributes to increased accessibility and speed of communication, but also poses challenges related to the digital divide and data protection. Information transparency and accessibility proved to be crucial to ensuring trust and effective exchange of information. Sociolinguistic aspects, especially language and cultural adaptation, have become of key importance to the development of effective intercultural communication, which is critical in a multilingual and culturally diverse European environment. The ability to adapt communication approaches to the specifics of each culture and language context has proven to be crucial in achieving success in international interaction and cooperation. Awareness of the cultural differences, norms, values and language of each target audience helps create more accurate and effective communication strategies, ensuring greater engagement and efficiency. Practical applications of these findings may involve the development of communication strategies that take into account cultural diversity and language, as well as ensure information security and transparency.

Supporting Intercultural Experiences in Online Teaching during Wartime and Humanitarian Crises: Slack as a Learning Tool

Online program design is important for cross-cultural learning and cultural awareness and responsiveness. Because of the importance of these areas in journalism and similar fields, this research studies an intercultural “bridge” project with journalism and media-related students at a southwest U.S. university and four universities in Yemen. The paper presents an analysis of the students’ experience of the cultural exchange on the platform, Slack, of journalism, and other types of media. Data demonstrated the impact of learning about each culture, and interculturally, through students’ and instructors’ perspectives versus news coverage provided by mainstream media. Intercultural bridge building and relationship development through collective activities and journalistic work also offered promise. The study also revealed impediments to seamless cultural exchanges and learning, and barriers to effective intercultural communication.

Improve speaking skills with Duolingo’s mobile game-based language learning

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of Duolingo's game-based methodology in improving speaking proficiency within mobile language learning, while also examining the specific attributes and strategies contributing to its success and exploring implications for language education and learner optimization. Given the growing prevalence of mobile language learning platforms, the research meticulously scrutinizes the specific attributes and strategies employed by Duolingo that contribute to the refinement of oral fluency. This study employs a mixed methods design, integrating phenomenological and experimental approaches through a pre, post and attainment speaking tests with a control group design supported with metaphorical perceptions. The findings underscore the pivotal role of assimilating technological advancements and gamified pedagogical approaches within language education to expedite effective intercultural communication across multifarious linguistic landscapes. Furthermore, the results emphasize the importance of continuously adapting language learning methodologies to leverage emerging technologies and gamification strategies in order to foster effective communication skills in diverse linguistic contexts. The implications for prospective inquiries advocate for longitudinal investigations delving into the enduring implications of mobile game-based language learning on comprehensive linguistic acquisition, necessitating comparative inquiries to ascertain the comparative efficacy of diverse mobile applications in fostering distinct language proficiencies. Additionally, probing the influence of individual learner attributes and predilections in optimizing the utilization of mobile language learning applications could yield valuable insights for tailoring language acquisition paradigms.

Adapted and Translated Texts for the Needs of Learning Bulgarian as a Foreign Language

When talking about the role of the text in foreign language learning, an important differentiation should be made between an authentic, adapted text for educational purposes, and a completely invented text. The adapted text goes through a variety of steps such as shortening, selecting parts, simplifying, co-contextualizing (giving learners the opportunity to activate the cognitive scheme through the use of pictures, illustrations, photographs accompanying the text body), creating a phrasebook. An essential element of foreign language training is working with texts for translation. Translation is not just transferring words and sentences from one language to another. Transmission is from one culture to another. Culture is very clearly manifested in the linguistic picture of the world. Translation aims to achieve effective intercultural communication. The article describes practical observations from the work with adapted and translated texts during the Bulgarian language classes for foreign students from the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.

Harmonizing Religious Diversity: Exploring Effective Intercultural Communication in Dukuh Sampetan Village

Religious tolerance is important to be instilled and carried out in building an interaction relationship in order to avoid divisions that can lead to conflict in society. The existence of a tolerant attitude towards religious differences and is expected to encourage the creation of a peaceful situation so as to create harmony in the interaction of people of different religions. In addition, it is also necessary to foster good harmonious communication so that it can form an understanding that leads to unity. Dukuh Sampetan is one of the dukuhs in Sampetan Village whose people consist of various religions, namely Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. This research uses qualitative research and the theory used is Effective Intercultural Workgroup Communication Theory. This research discusses cultural diversity, which means religious diversity in community groups in Sampetan Village in forming group communication that is able to achieve decisions, satisfaction and effectiveness of group performance in fostering tolerance between religious communities. The conclusion in this study is that communication that occurs in social life in Dukuh Sampetan runs effectively so that religious tolerance exists there is indeed true, seen from the forms of communication seen from general activities, communication that is usually carried out and religious activities.

Systematic Review (2003–2023): Exploring Technology-Supported Cross-Cultural Learning through Review Studies

Technology-supported cross-cultural learning (TSCCL) is essential for effective intercultural communication, fostering global understanding, and facilitating collaboration in an interconnected world. Although previous studies and review articles have explored this field, a comprehensive analysis of trends and key findings in these reviews is lacking. This study aims to fill this gap by conducting a thorough examination of existing review studies. We employed a narrative synthesis approach consisting of three phases: preparation, organization, and abstraction. We selected and systematically reviewed thirty-one review articles published in twenty-five journals between 2003 and 2023. Our findings highlight key aspects of the reviewed articles, such as keywords, databases, selection criteria, theoretical foundations, content analysis, research questions, findings, and limitations related to technology-supported cross-cultural learning. We found that the researchers used various strategies for literature searches, including single, double, or multiple keywords depending on the study’s focus. The most commonly used keywords were telecollaboration, intercultural, communication, competence, language learning, and technology, indicating their significance in current research and practice. The number of papers reviewed varied across studies, as did the timeframe coverage, ranging from a few years to several decades. Researchers employed different databases, with Web of Science, ERIC, Scopus, and Google Scholar being the most popular choices. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were established to ensure methodological rigor and relevance. Theoretical foundations, such as the telecollaboration model and intercultural communicative competence model, were frequently employed. Open coding was the dominant content analysis approach used. Research questions were present in some studies but not explicitly stated in others. These findings shed light on the strategies and considerations used by researchers in conducting review studies on technology-supported cross-cultural learning, providing guidance for future research. The study presents a reference table encompassing all previously published reviews, which can be valuable for future scholars. By gaining insights from past studies and identifying unexplored research avenues, researchers can benefit from this report. Additionally, the implications and suggestions derived from this review study are valuable for educators and researchers in the TSCCL field. This review addresses gaps in the existing literature and contributes to advancing knowledge in the field of TSCCL.

Comparative Study of International Practices in Developing Sociocultural Competence

This article presents a comparative study on international practices in developing sociocultural competence and explores their potential application in the context of Uzbekistan. Sociocultural competence is crucial for effective intercultural understanding and communication in a globalized world. Drawing from a range of global practices, including educational initiatives, intercultural training programs, policies, and community engagement efforts, this study identifies effective strategies for enhancing sociocultural competence. The analysis highlights the importance of integrating sociocultural competence into educational curricula, providing experiential learning opportunities, delivering intercultural communication training, and promoting community engagement. The findings underscore the significance of multicultural policies and inclusive education. Recommendations are presented for educators, policymakers, intercultural trainers, and individuals engaged in cross-cultural interactions in Uzbekistan to foster sociocultural competence. By applying successful strategies from international practices and tailoring them to the Uzbekistan’s context, the article provides guidance to cultivate a culturally inclusive society that values diversity and promotes intercultural understanding and effective communication.

Exploring the Speech Act of Requesting by German-English Bilinguals in Workplace Scenarios

Culturally different ways of requesting can raise the possibility of misunderstanding in a 21st century workplace. Following the goal of Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP) to engender communicative skills that foster intercultural understanding, the present study examines how German immigrants living in the United States make requests in the workplace. This query aims to shed light on bilingual pragmatic and intercultural competence. A total of 17 participants completed oral discourse completion tasks. The results showed that the German-English bilinguals tended to blend socio-pragmatic norms of both languages into a unique bilingual pragmatic competence. Overall, they were more direct in German than in English when making requests, showing awareness of intercultural differences. In their German responses, the bilinguals appeared to be even more direct than Germans in previous studies. Furthermore, participants’ higher use of hints attests to pragmatic competence at the workplace, as hints were almost exclusively used with superiors. The findings help to better equip employees who work in global workplaces to express and understand requests. The findings also inform LSP curriculum, which is ideally situated to educate future workers in effective intercultural communication.

With the recent emphasis on the need for effective intercultural communication and the expansion of missionary activities across diverse cultural landscapes, understanding the dynamics of cross-cultural interactions has become pivotal. Previous research has highlighted various factors influencing intercultural competence, yet a comprehensive exploration of how human rights, social distance, and self-efficacy impact this competence in the context of missionary work has been limited. Therefore the purpose of this paper is to examine the factors that affect on intercultural competence of overseas missionaries focusing on human rights, social distance, and self-efficacy, and come up with how to enhance their intercultural competence based on the results of the study. A survey was conducted in which 93 overseas missionaries participated; SPSS ver. 25.0 was used for data analysis. The results revealed the following. First, Human rights, social distance, and self-efficacy of overseas missionaries showed a positive correlation with intercultural competence. Second, social distance and self-efficacy were statistically significant factors in intercultural competence. Third, the relative effects were self-efficacy and social distance in order. These results suggested the significance of designing a educational program and activities to enhance overseas missionaries’ self-efficacy and intercultural competence, and to reduce their social distance.

An Intercultural Perspective on Construction of Corporate Identity of Chinese and American Enterprises —— Taking Fin-Tech Unicorns as an Example

Benefiting from the progression of science and technology, an increasing number of enterprises begin to delve into the construction of corporate identity through their official websites, regarded as an international door today. The researches about the building of corporate images takes a large amount of shareholdings in academic area. Notwithstanding, there are only few scholars studying the portray of the profile from an intercultural perspective with “About us” section in company websites as the data. With the help of the corpus analytic tool AntConc, this paper intends to discuss the common and distinctive corporate identities of Fin-Tech unicorns in China and the US respectively which are manifested in high-frequency vocabulary, key words, communication strategy and style. It is discovered that the common identities include international financial technology companies, payment services provider and caring about consumers. Apart from this, CF takes the mixture of proactive and reactive strategy in building its images and tends to be more impersonal and hierarchical in communication style. The proactive strategy and casual communication style constitute to the construction of UF’s identities. From the cultural perspective, CF expresses all of the cultural dimensions specific in China except that of masculinity and femininity and the situation of UF is the same with CF. CF should endeavor to narrow the cultural gap thorough applying effective intercultural communication strategies and keep in line with the local culture. In this way, CF might be able to grab the chances along with the advance of globalization.

Effect of Biographical Variables on Employees' Adaptation to Intercultural Communication in a University of Technology

Effective intercultural communication is one possible way of improving intercultural competency and ultimately assisting an organisation to achieve success. Employees from different cultural backgrounds are required to adapt and accommodate each other in intercultural communication interactions. Therefore, this article sought to establish the effects of biographical variables on employees at a university of technology. An online self-administered questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data. A total of 294 respondents completed the questionnaire. Likert items were used to obtain responses to the questions, and SPSS software was used to analyse the data. The findings showed that biographical variables such as education, age, language, race, and country of origin do not influence the adaptation to intercultural communication, competence in intercultural communication, the impact of culture on communication, recognition, and understanding of cultural differences, intercultural communication as a source of team cohesion and improvement of intercultural communication. Additionally, the findings showed that women and men perceive the above intercultural communication variables in the same way. The article advocates for the continuous enhancement of intercultural communication.

Methodology of blended learning of future social workers’ professionally oriented communication in english

The article substantiates the methodology of blended learning of professionally oriented oral communication for future social workers in English. In the context of the study, blended learning is defined as a technology that provides a balanced combination of traditional classroom learning, online and offline self-study, as well as online synchronous interaction for students to master the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities in the shortest possible time for the purpose of effective intercultural communication in typical professional situations. Blended learning involves: practical training in the classroom, synchronous forms (virtual classes, instant messaging), asynchronous forms (joint creation of documents, e-mail, forums). The expediency of using two models of blended learning – the rotational model in the variant of changing stations and the model of flipped learning – is substantiated. The stages of blended learning are allocated: preparatory, aimed at developing lexical, grammatical, phonetic listening and speaking skills, familiarisation with learning and communication strategies, speech formulas inherent in monologue-message and monologue-explanation, as well as dialogue-agreement and dialogue-discussion; receptive-reproductive, aimed at analysing information, developing skills of introductory, selective and detailed listening, skills of prepared spoken production and spoken interaction, skills of using learning and communication strategies; productive, which involves improving communication skills in communication situations using selected communication strategies and tactics. A system of exercises correlating with the identified stages is proposed. The effectiveness of the author's methodology has been proved experimentally. The obtained results related to first-year students who are not autonomous enough. It is assumed that the results were different for students of senior years, who probably have a higher level of academic autonomy.

ECOLOGICAL DOMINANTS IN CROSS-CULTURAL COMMUNICATIONS OF EUROPEAN BUSINESS: THE IMPACT OF THE GREEN DEAL

The subject of the study is the identification of cross-cultural features of European business under the influence of the implementation of the Green Deal as the main EU development strategy until 2025. Methodology. The research used general logical and theoretical methods of cognition. The method of analysis and synthesis was used to evaluate the components of intercultural competence for the successful development of eco-business in the EU. The method of analogy was used to find out what is similar and what is different in traditional and environmentally oriented business, which affects the specifics of cross-cultural communication. The theoretical method of generalisation is used to substantiate the content and essence of intercultural competence of environmental business. The method of system analysis was used to construct the author's conceptual model of the formation of intercultural competence of European environmental business. Purpose. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the peculiarities of environmental cross-cultural management in the activities of European business and the role of cross-cultural competencies in the success of European environmental companies, including Ukrainian business. Results. The article has proved the role of green growth as a dominant concept and concrete policy of the European Union, embodied in the strategy of the EU Green Deal Strategy (GDS). The main sectoral determinants of green growth, reflected in the Green Deal, are defined as forming the field of development of environmental business in the EU. It has been shown that this tendency affects the specifics of cross-cultural communication. The need to build effective cross-cultural communications in the European environmental business under the influence of the Green Deal determinants was analysed and addressed through the strategy of green cross-cultural management. Conclusion. European companies implementing eco-innovative developments are faced with expanding the range of cooperation with various partners, including in the multinational environment of creation, approval, implementation and monitoring of implementation effectiveness. The need to build effective intercultural communication in European eco-business under the influence of the determinants of the Green Deal, taking into account cultural differences in business relations and using the tools of effective intercultural management has been emphasised. The list of criteria for effective communication and structuring of relations in cross-cultural management was determined. The positive relationship between the integration of different cultures in EU enterprises and the growth of their competitiveness is emphasised. The prerequisites for the formation of sustainable cross-cultural competence of a business process participant are proved. Prospects for the development of "green" cross-cultural competences in the European business space are outlined. The cross-cultural competences of the European environmental business are considered from the point of view of ethnorelativism formation. The authors emphasize that intercultural communication in environmental business should take into account the peculiarities of national cultures, which make it understandable for everyone, as well as the values of the Green Planet, which is an objective unifying factor. The basic elements of the green intercultural management strategy for European business are proposed and the main obstacles to the implementation of such management mechanisms in the Ukrainian business environment are identified.

PRAGMATIC ASPECTS OF SPEECH ACTS: A CROSS-LINGUISTIC PERSPECTIVE

Effective intercultural communication is a cornerstone of today's globalized world, necessitating an exploration of the pragmatic aspects of speech acts from a cross-linguistic perspective. This research delves into the complex interplay between language, culture, and politeness strategies within the contexts of Bahasa Indonesia and Malay. Using a comprehensive datasets collected through observational field study in diverse naturalistic settings, including workplaces, educational institutions, and everyday social contexts, research examines the performance and interpretation of requests, apologies, compliments, and refusals. The findings reveal a shared preference for indirect and polite language when making requests in both linguistic communities, underlining the universality of politeness strategies. While Bahasa Indonesia speakers tend to employ explicit expressions of regret in apologies, Malay speakers adopt a more subtle approach. Compliments showcase differences, with Bahasa Indonesia speakers favoring direct expressions of admiration and Malay speakers employing nuanced language. Refusals demonstrate stark contrasts, with Malay speakers utilizing indirect strategies and Bahasa Indonesia speakers opting for directness. This study contributes to the growing discourse on cross-linguistic and cross-cultural pragmatics, emphasizing the importance of considering both linguistic diversity and cultural norms in understanding intercultural communication. This research, grounded in real-world interactions, calls for continued exploration of trans-cultural threads in speech act usage and offers valuable insights for enhancing intercultural competence. While acknowledging the study's limitations, researcher invites future research endeavors to delve deeper into the intricate world of speech acts and intercultural communication.

Applying Hofstede’s Cultural Dimension Theory to Analyze Intercultural Communication Differences

Intercultural communication is becoming increasingly important in today’s globalized world, where people from different cultural backgrounds are increasingly interacting with each other in various settings. This paper applies Hofstede’s cultural dimension theory to analyze intercultural communication differences in different cultural contexts, and presents effective intercultural communication strategies to deal with these differences. A case study of intercultural communication in a multicultural workplace is also presented to illustrate the application of the theory and strategies. The paper concludes by summarizing the main findings and suggesting future research directions in intercultural communication.

Korean tourists' experience of intercultural communication through English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) in overseas travel: A grounded theory approach

This study examines Korean tourists' experience of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) in overseas travel using grounded theory. The data is based on semi-structured interviews with 17 South Korean tourists, and the analysis using paradigm theory demonstrated 146 concepts, 29 subcategories, 11 main categories, and a core category entitled ‘enhancing the quality of tourism experiences and the motivation for English learning through effective communicative accommodation’ regarding ELF. The findings show that despite their awareness of the growing role of ELF, participants had concerns about using English in overseas travel and had experienced language barriers. However, these were mainly caused by different linguistic expression (dialects, accents) among speakers, not from using English per se. To overcome miscommunication, participants employ diverse strategies, which contribute to enhancing the quality of tourist experiences and raising the motivation for learning English. The study makes theoretical and practical recommendations to promote effective intercultural communication between tourists and hosts for sustainable destination management.

The main problem of cross-cultural communications is that decoding is closely related to the specifics of the participants' culture in information exchange and joint activities. Representatives of different cultures decipher received messages in different ways. The participants of collective actions represent the further the cultures, the more difficult it becomes to achieve mutual understanding and the more difficulties arise in implementing everyday actions. Studying and accounting for the peculiarities of cross-cultural communications allows for predicting the behavior of foreign partners and avoiding mistakes in the management of international organizations and projects. For the timely prevention and resolution of emerging conflicts, a balanced strategic policy of company management, readiness to see the causes of conflicts and make changes to achieve a reasonable compromise, flexibility, and adaptability of the organizational structure are essential. The in-depth knowledge of managers of the characteristics and basic parameters of the cultures in which the organization works and whose representatives are its employees is of great importance. Professional solutions to cross-cultural problems can be effective management of communications and human resources, use of virtual teams, and development of bicultural skills. The practical work of managers with human resources in companies is vital. A positive view of different attitudes and values helps prevent problematic situations and conflicts. Intercultural communication in the workplace is about understanding different business customs, beliefs, and communication strategies. This happens when people from different cultural backgrounds interact with each other. As we live in an age of globalization, it is only natural that employers are not limited to hiring people close to them. Specific cultural barriers exist to effective communication between a manager and a team. Since cultural diversity can positively and negatively affect the company, HR managers should consider the importance of developing effective intercultural communication in clearly conveying intended information to employees of different cultural orientations and ensuring unity of goals and objectives. INTERLINGUAL AND INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION IN THE EDUCATION OF MODERN GERMANISTS

The article is devoted to interlingual and intercultural communication in the training of specialists in Germanic philology. The relevance of the research is conditioned by the search for effective ways of training modern professionals in the field of Germanic Studies. The aim of the article is to substantiate the necessity of revising the content of foreign language education with a focus on linguistics and intercultural communication. Intercultural communication is interpreted as a complete mutual understanding between two participants in a communication act who belong to different national cultures. The authors point out that in intercultural communication, it is not the culture that comes into contact, but the person who is the representative and mediator of intercultural interaction, i.e. intercultural communication is the relationship that develops between people from different cultures in situations of language interaction. Cultural competence is considered to be the most important element of communicative competence necessary for cultural dialogue, which means tolerance in all situations of communication, the ability to choose the right tone in communicating with representatives of other cultures, appropriate communication strategies and forms of self-presentation. The authors considered the condition of effective intercultural communication from linguistic and extralinguistic points of view. The article concludes that it is necessary to jointly study language as a system of symbols and a tool for communication and culture as a system of values, worldview and behavior of native speakers. The authors of the article suggest introducing such disciplines as «Linguocultural studies» and «Ethnolinguistics» into the curriculum of Germanist training. It is proposed to use macrosociological, microsociological, anthropological, tourism, and educational approaches in the teaching of these disciplines.
