The effect of solid solution treatment on the hardness and microstructure of 0.6%wt C-10.8%wt Mn-1.44%wt Cr austenitic manganese steel

Austenitic manganese steel is steel alloy that has high manganese content (10-14%wt Mn). The characteristics of austenitic manganese steel are good in toughness, ductility, and wear resistance. Effect of solid solution treatment on the hardness and microstructure of austenitic manganese steel was studied in this experiment. The solid solution treatment process of austenitic manganese steel, 0.6%wt C-10.8%wt Mn-1.44%wt Cr, was conducted by heating the material at varied temperatures (950°C, 1000°C, 1050°C) for an hour and then quenching it in two different quenching media, i.e. oil and water. Further, the samples were tempered at three different temperatures (300°C, 400°C, and 500°C) for 2 hours. The treated materials were analyzed by Rockwell Hardness Tester to obtain the information of materials hardness and by an optical microscope and XRD to investigate the microstructure phase of the treated materials. Heating the austenitic manganese steel at 950°C for an hour followed by water quenching dissolved all carbide in as-cast condition and resulted the fully austenitic on its microstructure. Carbide precipitation occurred due to the prolongation of soaking time in solid solution treatment and tempering process. The optimum hardness of sample was 53.3 HRC, which was resulted by heating this material until 1000°C for an hour, followed by water quenching and tempering at 400°C for 2 hours.

Effect of heat treatments on the microstructure of an ultrafine-grained Al-Zn-Mg alloy produced by powder metallurgy

Previous study by Queudet et al. [1] showed that powder metallurgy allows to produce high strength ultrafine-grained (UFG) Al-Zn-Mg alloys which contains both η' and η phases. This present work investigates the effects of solid solution treatment followed by quenching (W temper) and subsequent ageing to obtain theoretical T6 tempered UFG material. TEM analyses revealed the presence of GP zones and metastable η' phase in W tempered UFG material. Compared to as-fabricated material, quenching conferred to the alloy higher maximum stress of 785MPa and stabilized plastic flow. Further ageing resulted in over-aged alloy containing the η phase, inducing lower hardness and compressive stress. TEM observations showed that variant η2 which grows from η' is delimited by previous GP-II zones.

Effect of Solid Solution Treatment on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of DS Superalloy DZ8

The microstructure of DZ8 after solid solution treatment at 1260 ℃ and 1240 ℃ was observed, and the tensile and stress rupture properties were compared. The results show that less than 1% γ+γ' eutectic remains in the microstructure of DZ8 after solid solution treatment at 1260 ℃, while incipient melting takes place in the Hf-rich phase; about 12% γ+γ' eutectic exists in the microstructure of DZ8 after solid solution treatment at 1240 ℃, but no incipient melting phase is discovered. After solid solution treatment at 1260 ℃, the stress rupture property of DZ8 in 980 ℃/725 MPa and the tensil property of DZ8 at room temperature, 700 ℃ and 980 ℃ show little different compared with those treated at 1240 ℃, but the stress rupture property in 760 ℃/725 MPa decreases to some extent.

Effect of Solid Solution Treatment on the Microstructure and Properties of Fe-Mn-Al Light-Weight Steel

A study was made of the effects of solid solution treatment on the properties of hot rolled Fe-Mn-Al steel and on the microstructure transformation. In the steel, the austenite matrix and ferrite duplex phases were confirmed by micrographs and X-ray diffraction. It was indicated that the hot rolled Fe-Mn-Al steel (6.55g/cm3 in density) is with mechanical properties of tensile strength 1315.6MPa, elongation 14.60%. The tensile strength decreases with increasing temperature. The tensile test displays an outstanding combination of high strength and ductility at room temperature due to continuous strain hardening behavior. The product of tensile strength and ductility can reach 46.5GPa·%. Solution treatment contributes to the dissolution of precipitate, austenite grain growth and banded ferrite crushing.

Effects of Solid Solution Treatment and Rolling Treatment on Electrochemical Properties of Al Anode Alloy

Effects of solid solution treatment and rolling treatment on microstructure and electrochemical properties of Al-Ga-Mg-Mn-Bi anode alloy were investigated by means of SEM and electrochemical measurements. The results show that after solid solution treatment the microstructure segregation of the as-cast alloy was reduced, the hydrogen evolution was restrained, the corrosion resistance was increased. The open circuit potential moves towards negative after solid solution treatment. Rolling treatment had little impact on the alloy. The effects of solid solution treatment were superior to rolling treatment.

Effect of Solid Solution Treatment on Fatigue Behavior of Cast Magnesium Alloy

The effects of solid solution treatment on high cycle fatigue behavior of cast magnesium alloy AZ91D were investigated using an up-and-down load method. High cycle fatigue tests were carried out up to 107cycles at a stress ratio R=0.1 and frequency of 90Hz on specimens using a high frequency fatigue machine. The results showed that the fatigue strength of cast AZ91D magnesium alloy increase from 54.5Mpa to 71.5Mpa after solid solution treatment (T4) at 415°C, keeping temperature 16hours. The micro-fatigue fracture surface of alloy included fatigue initiation area, fatigue crack propagation area and fatigue fracture area. Fatigue crack of the alloys initiate principally at inclusions and shrinks under subsurface. The fatigue fracture of test specimens show the rupture characteristics of quasi-cleavage(as-cast alloy) and toughness(T4 alloy), respectively.

Effect of solid-solution treatment on corrosion and electrochemical behaviors of Mg-15Y alloy in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution

The effect of solid-solution treatment on corrosion and electrochemical mechanisms of Mg-15Y alloy in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was investigated by electrochemical testing, immersion testing and SEM observation. The results indicated that the corrosion resistance of Mg-15Y sample gradually deteriorated with immersion time increasing, which was consistent with the observation of corrosion morphologies. The solid-solution treatment decreased the amounts of second phase Mg24Y5. The Ecorr and corrosion rate of as-cast samples were both lower than those of solid solution-treated samples, and both increased with increment of solid solution-treated time. The corrosion mechanism was proposed for the galvanic, pitting and filiform corrosion which varied with the immersion time and solid-solution treatment.

Effect of Solid Solution Treatment on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Mg97Y2Zn1 Alloy

The X-phase grew in the matrix on the basal plane (0001) when Mg97Y2Zn1 alloy was solution treated at 415 and 540 °C. However, increasing the treatment temperature up to 560 °C, some X-phases may be dissolved. It was further observed that the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) process was completed and abnormal grain growth in the extruded alloy that was solution treated at 415 °C. On the other hand, the incomplete DRX process in the alloy treated at 560 °C was restrained by high content of induced yttrium in matrix. The Mg97Y2Zn1 alloys treated in the range of 415-560 °C exhibit excellent mechanical properties, among which the highest strength was obtained in the one treated at 560 °C. The high strength is believed to be owing to the ultra-fine grain, high density of plane faults of the long-period stacking structures, strain strengthening, and solid solution strengthening.

Effect of Solid Solution Treatment on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of IN738LC Superalloy

Cast IN738LC alloy mainly consists of primary gamma matrix, gamma prime precipitates, and carbides. SEM-EDS analysis results suggested that most of the carbides are MC type ones that possess high Ti or Ta contents. MC carbides were partly dissolved into the matrix during the solid solution treatment, and the morphology and size of carbides were influenced by the solid solution treatment temperature. Characteristics of gamma prime precipitates were also significantly affected by the solid solution treatment conditions. Single or duplex size distributions of gamma prime precipitates were obtained depending on the solid solution treatment condition. Higher tensile strength was obtained in the case of finer precipitation size and in the case of single size distribution as compared with that of duplex size distribution.

Effects of Solid-Solution Treatment on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of HIP Treated Alloy 718

The aim of this study is to explore alloy 718 that treated at an optimal HIP process, and then imposed various solid-solution temperatures and aging treatment. The experimental results indicated that Laves and δ precipitations obviously appeared within the grain boundary, under HIP treatment and lower solid-solution temperatures (940°C), which would result in poor mechanical properties. However, Laves and δ phase can be completely dissolved at 1020°C 1 hour solid-solution treatment. The tensile strength was increased to 1331.5 MPa, and elongation reached up to 6.1% under a 1020°C solid-solution and aging treatment. Increasing the solid-solution temperature to 1060°C would cause parts of the NbC to dissolve, thus a large number of the thin sheet-shaped NbC would appear in the solid-solution and aging specimen. The yield stress is slight increase, but a lot of NbC precipitations will result in the decreasing tensile strength (1298.8 MPa) and elongation (5.4%). As a result, the optimal solid-solution treatment parameter of alloy 718 is 1020°C for 1-hour.

Effect of solid solution treatment on corrosive behavior of 00Cr26Ni5Mo2Cu3Re Duplex Stainless Steel in static stage of HNO3+HF acid solution is studied in the paper.The results show that the corrosion between phases and pitting corrosion on ferrite are serious at low temperature ,the phenomenon gradually disappear with the solid solution temperature rising ; the corrosive resistance of 00Cr26Ni5Mo2Cu3Re is getting better first and then decrease with solution temperature at high temperature, the best corrosive resistance temperature is at 1050°C.

Effect of Solid Solution Time on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of AZ81-4Gd Magnesium Alloy

The effect of solid solution treatment at temperature of 415oC and different holding time prior aging at 168oC for 16 hours on the mechanical properties and microstructure of AZ81-4Gd magnesium alloy were analyzed by X-ray and SEM. The results demonstrated that with increasing the solid solution time the primary β-Mg17Al12 phase dissolve in the matrix eventually. While the holding time increases to 20 hrs, the primary β-Mg17Al12 phase was completely vanished, but Al2Gd phase kept unchanged with increasing the holding time. In the mean while, the volume fraction of the β-Mg17Al12 phase precipitated during aging increased at first with increasing the holding time then decreased. Moreover, subgrains and twins began to form within the α grain matrix when the solid solution time increased to 12hrs, and the subgains parallele with each other or in the shape of oval. Increasing the solid solution time to 20 hrs the microstructure change dramatically and consist of very fine recrystallized α grains. Futher increasing the holding time the recrystallized grain size increased accordingly. The mechanical properties testing results showed that when the solid solution time increased to 24 hrs the ultimate tensile strength of AZ81-4Gd magnesium alloy was 270 MPa and the elongation was 11.6% respectively.

Effect of solid solution treatment on semisolid microstructure of dendritic zinc alloy ZA27

The effect of solid solution treatment on semisolid microstructure of a Zn alloy ZA27 with developed dendrites was investigated and a new approach to produce non-dendritic semisolid microstructure available for thixoforming was developed. The results indicated that a semisolid microstructure with small and spherical primary particles could be obtained when the alloy with developed dendrites was solution treated for 3 h at 370°C and then partially remelted at a semisolid temperature of 460°C. This method could not only overcome some inevitable shortcomings resulting from using some present popular approaches, but also simplify the procedure of thixoforming. Too short or too long solution treatment duration could increase the shape factor, size and inhomogeneity of the primary particles. All of these microstructural changes were attributed to the dendrite coalescence and phase transformation which occurred during solid solution treatment.

Effect of Solid Solution Treatment on Microstructure of Fe-Ni Based High Strength Low Thermal Expansion Alloy

The influence of solid solution treatments on the dissolution of carbides precipitates, the grain size, and the hardness of high strength low expansion alloy were investigated through XRD analysis, microstructure observations, and theoretical computation. It was seen that most primary Mo2C type carbide band dissolved in a temperature range of 1 100–1 150 °C. When the temperature was over 1 200 °C, the grain size increased remarkably, which led to the reduction of hardness.

Effects of solutionized Al–10Sr master alloys on grain refinement of AZ31 magnesium alloy

In the paper, the effects of solutionized Al–10Sr master alloys on grain refinement of AZ31 magnesium alloy are investigated. The results indicate that the effects of solid solution treatment on the morphology and size of Al 4 Sr phases in the commercial Al–10Sr master alloy are obvious. With the solutionized temperature increasing from 400 °C to 600 °C, the size of Al 4 Sr phases reduces gradually, and the morphology of Al 4 Sr phases evolves from coarse block shape to fine block and flake shapes. Comparing with the commercial Al–10Sr master alloy, the solutionized Al–10Sr master alloys exhibit higher refinement efficiency to AZ31 magnesium alloy, and the refinement efficiency increases with the solutionized temperature increasing from 400 °C to 600 °C. The mechanism might be related to the dissolution rates of Al 4 Sr phases in the melt of AZ31 magnesium alloy.

Effects of Solid Solution Treatments on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of AM60B Magnesium Alloys with RE Addition

Effects of solid solution treatment on microstructure and mechanical property of AM60B alloy with rare earth additions were studied. The experimental results indicated that the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of alloys were obviously improved by addition of RE no more than 1.6%, while their elongation were not decreased much, microstructure of AM60B+xRE alloys consisted of following phases: delta (Mg) solid solution, rod-like Al11RE3 phase, particle-like Al10Ce2Mn7 phase, and net-like and/or insular Mg17Al12 phase. After solid-solution treated(T4) for 20hr, 35hr, and 50hr at 410degreesC respectively, the Mg17Al12 phase almost dissolved in Mg matrix, but the rare earth compounds Al11RE3 and Al10Ce2Mn7 phases didn';t dissolve and their morphology was slightly changed. When the content of RE reached 1.6%, the alloys'; UTS reached peak.
