The Effect of Sensorimotor Training on the Knee Proprioception and Functional Balance of Visually Impaired Women

Background and Aims Decreased vision is one of the sensory impairments that causes the sufferer to have difficulty in balancing and performing daily activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of sensorimotor exercises on proprioception and balance in orderly women. Methods The present study is quasi-experimental and 30 women with visual impairment in the age range of 35 to 45 years were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group performed sensory-motor exercises for 8 weeks and three sessions per week. Before and after the exercises, knee proprioception at 40 to 60 degrees with imaging method and functional balance was measured using the Y test. ANCOVA test was used to analyze the data at the significance level of (P=0.05). Results The results showed that after the intervention of sensorimotor exercises, the proprioception of the knee joint at an angle of 40 to 60 degrees and functional balance in the experimental group compared to the control group significantly improved (P=0.0001). Conclusion Strengthening the proprioception through motor-sensory exercises and improving motor-sensory input can increase balance in the elderly. Sensory-motor exercises in the closed motor chain strengthen the deep sensory feedback of the lower limb muscles and thus improve the balance and deep sense of the elderly.

Effects of sensorimotor training on functional and pain outcomes in achilles tendinopathy: a systematic review.

Considering the neuromuscular alterations in Achilles tendinopathy (AT), sensorimotor training (SMT) might be beneficial to restore the neuromuscular capacity of the muscle-tendon complex and thereby improve patients' functions and alleviate symptoms. However, there is still a lack of knowledge concerning the effects of SMT on improving functional (e.g., strength) and pain outcomes in this population. Thus, the purpose of this study was to synthesize current evidence to analyze the efficacy of SMT in people with AT. A systematic electronic search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from inception to December 2023. Studies applying SMT in people with AT investigating functional or clinical pain outcomes were considered. Protocols had to incorporate balance, stabilization, proprioception, or vibration training. Patients with insertional or mid-portion AT (≥18 years age) diagnosed with clinical or sonographic evaluation were included. The search yielded 823 records. A total of three randomized controlled trials were considered eligible for the analysis. Each trial used a different SMT protocol: balance training, balance with stabilization training, or whole-body vibration training (WBVT) with other co-interventions. Most functional and pain parameters improved compared to baseline. The first study reported a decrease in pain and an increase in performance (i.e., countermovement jump height) and endurance (i.e., number of heel-raises) by 12-week use of a balance training in addition to isometric, concentric/eccentric, and eccentric exercises. The second study evaluated the four weeks effect of SMT (balance and stabilization training plus eccentric exercises) in addition to passive physiotherapy (deep frictions, ice, ultrasound), resulting in an increased plantarflexion peak torque and reduced pain levels. The third study investigating WBVT reported at 12 weeks an increase in flexibility and a decrease in tendon pain. SMT in addition to other co-interventions (i.e., eccentric, isometric, concentric/eccentric training, physiotherapy) showed improvements in strength, performance, muscle flexibility, and alleviated clinical outcomes of pain. SMT might therefore be useful as part of a multimodal treatment strategy protocol in patients suffering from AT. During interplanetary expeditions, the crew must adapt not only to gravity transitions but also to long-term stay in a limited space of a space station. In such conditions, it develops a significant decrease in motor activity and the formation of a special stereotype of movements in these conditions. Within further planning of ground-based and real interplanetary missions, it is appropriate to assess the impact of these factors on the crew's functional condition, including when modeling lunar gravity using suspension and virtual reality (VR) technologies. The purpose was to determine the functional capabilities of 5 members of the international crew of the 240-day SIRIUS-21 isolation experiment when performing an extravehicular activity (EVA) after 4 and 6 months of isolation in the hermetic facility. During EVA, the crew performed basic motor tasks using VR on an uneven surface: positional tests, voluntary and tandem walking, walking when avoiding and stepping over obstacles, and verticalization from lying and standing on one knee positions. In addition, the EVA scenario included the tasks of controlling the rover while the hands unloading, as well as moving on a sliding surface in a VR environment when the body lunar vertical unloading. In this study, we presented results of qualitative and quantitative analysis of video recording data and qualitative analysis of the electromyographic activity of the muscles of the lower extremities. The results indicate a sufficient level of functional performance of SIRIUS-21 crew members – all the EVA tasks were completed by the crew in full, while no cases of significant loss of balance and signs of pronounced locomotor and vestibular disorders were registered. At the same time, this paper highlights some features of the crew's EVA performance – the effects of sensorimotor training on some tasks with repeated EVA experience, the most common errors, and difficulties in performing the tasks of the EVA scenario.

Effect of sensorimotor training on spatiotemporal parameters of gait among middle and older age adults with diabetic peripheral neuropathy

Purpose The study aimed to evaluate the effect of sensorimotor training on spatiotemporal parameters of gait among middle-aged and older adults with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Methods A randomised controlled study with four parallel arms (two intervention groups and two control groups) was conducted. Thirty-seven DPN patients were selected on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Of these, 16 middle-aged and 21 older adults were randomly allocated to the intervention and control groups. Participants in the intervention group were administered eight weeks (three days/week) of sensorimotor training along with diabetes and foot care education whereas participants in the control group received only diabetes and foot care education. Outcome measures involved spatiotemporal parameters of gait at self-paced and maximal-paced, measured before and after eight weeks. Results Age difference was found to be significant in velocity (p ≤ 0.013) and stride length (p ≤ 0.017) at self-paced and maximal-paced walking. After the intervention, velocity was found to be a significant group effect and time × group interaction at self-paced (p = 0.003) and maximal-paced (p = 0.003) walking. Stride length (p = 0.006) was found to be a significant group effect and time × group interaction at self-paced only. Cadence (p = 0.041) and gait cycle (p = 0.05) were found to be significant time × group interaction only at maximal-paced walking. Stance (p ≤ 0.047) and double limb support (p ≤ 0.02) were found to be significant group effect and time × group interaction at self-paced and maximal-paced walking. Conclusion Sensorimotor training improves spatiotemporal parameters of gait after eight weeks in similar fashion in middle-aged and older age DPN patients, regardless of age.

Immediate Effects of Sensorimotor Training in Airway Protection (smTAP) on Cough Outcomes in Progressive Supranuclear Palsy: A Feasibility Study.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by a high prevalence of dysphagia, cough dysfunction, and resultant aspiration pneumonia. Sensorimotor cough function is important for airway clearance in people with dysphagia. Upregulation of cough has been demonstrated in healthy adults and Parkinson's disease; however, the feasibility of cough rehabilitation in PSP is unknown. We sought to assess feasibility by examining the immediate effects of a novel sensorimotor training in airway protection (smTAP) on upregulation of cough function in PSP. Fifteen individuals with PSP enrolled in this study. Baseline voluntary and reflex cough testing were completed. During smTAP, participants were presented with subthreshold capsaicin and instructed to cough with sufficient intensity to hit a target line (set 25% above baseline reflex peak cough flow) via cough airflow visual biofeedback. Twenty-five repetitions were targeted within a single session. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests compared cough airflow measures between baseline voluntary cough testing, the initial five trials of smTAP, and final five trials. Mean peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) significantly increased from initial to final smTAP trials (p < 0.001). Fourteen participants increased PEFR, with gains of more than 10% in 11 participants. Variability of PEFR (p = 0.01) and cough expired volume (p = 0.01) significantly decreased across smTAP trials. This study is the first to demonstrate the ability of people with PSP to immediately upregulate cough function, providing preliminary support for the feasibility of cough rehabilitation in this population with this novel treatment approach. Future research examining the effects of multiple sessions of smTAP on cough outcomes is warranted.

Effect of Sensorimotor Training Using a Flexi-bar on Postural Balance and Gait Performance for Children With Cerebral Palsy: A Preliminary Study

Background:Children with cerebral palsy (CP) have impaired postural control, but critically require the control of stability. Consequently, therapeutic interventions for enhancing postural control in children with CP have undergone extensive research. One intervention is sensorimotor training (SMT) using a Flexi-bar, but this has not previously been studied with respect to targeting trunk control in children with CP.Objects:This study was conducted to determine the effect of SMT using a Flexi-bar on postural balance and gait performance in children with CP.Methods:Three children with ambulatory spastic diplegia (SD) participated in the SMT program by using a Flexi-bar for forty minutes per day, three times a week, for six weeks. Outcome variables included the pediatric balance scale (PBS), trunk control movement scale (TCMS), 10 meter walking test (10MWT), and 3-dimensional movement coordination measurement.Results:The SMT provided no statistically significant improvement in PBS, TCMS, 10MWT, or 3-dimensional movement coordination measurement. However, positive changes were observed in individual outcomes, as balance and trunk control movement were improved.Conclusion:SMT using a Flexi-bar may be considered by clinicians as a potential intervention for increasing postural balance and performance in children with SD. Future studies are necessary to confirm the efficacy of Flexi-bar exercise in improving the functional activity of subjects with SD.

The Effect of Sensorimotor Training on the Postural Stability of Visually Impaired Women Over 50 Years of Age

Previous studies indicated that blind and visually impaired people are a group with greater risk of falls. Postmenopausal changes significantly decrease physical efficiency and impair the body’s mechanisms for maintaining postural stability. In addition, the frequency of falls among women is much higher than in men. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of sensorimotor exercise on changes in postural stability of visually impaired women over 50 years of age. Visually impaired women from group E showed a lower level of postural stability measured with EO compared to the healthy women. After completing the exercise, a more pronounced improvement in the level of postural stability was observed in group E.

Therapeutic effects of sensorimotor training on patients with knee osteoarthritis

Objective To investigate the effects of sensorimotor therapy on patients with knee osteoarthritis.Methods Ninety-two patients with knee osteoarthritis were divided into a treatment group and a control group by using random digits table. Both groups received conventional rehabilitation therapy, including knee isometric and isotonic contraction training, ultrashort wave diathermy as well as aerobic exercise. The treatment group was also administered with sensorimotor training, in addition to the conventional training,including the muscle strengthening and control training of quadriceps and hamstring muscle using sling exercise therapy system and on the Thera-band mattress. The visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain, manual muscle testing and knee range of motion as well as the Japanese Orthopedic Association knee function evaluation form were used to evaluate the patients. Results There was no statistic difference between the 2 groups before treatment, with regard to the evaluation parameters used in this study. After 2 months of treatment, both groups improved significantly (P ＜0.05),with the treatment group improved to a significantly greater extent (P ＜0.05). Conclusions Sensorimotor training in addition to the conventional rehabilitation treatment can further relieve the pain of patients with knee osteoarthritis joints arthritis and improve the function of patients with knee osteoarthritis.
