Elimination and addition reactions. Part 41. Nucleophilic eliminative fission of cyclopropanes: the coiled spring effect of ring strain on nucleofugality and its evaluation

Rates have been measured of sulphonyl-activated eliminative ring fissions of a series of six cyclopropanes in which the leaving group is stabilised by alkoxycarbonyl, cyano, or sulphonyl groups. The measurements allow assignment of ranks (nucleofugalities) to carbon leaving groups in systems in which the connection to the leaving group is strained by incorporation in a cyclopropane ring. The values obtained are compared with those obtained for a unstrained (acyclic) analogues. Rank enhancements of about 9 (log) units are obtained; these enhancements suggest that free energies of activation for leaving-group expulsion are reduced by about 53 kJ mol–1, or about 46% of the excess of enthalpy of the strained ring, notwithstanding the small degree of ring fission in the transition structure. The effect of phenyl substitution at the leaving group suggests that cleavage of the ring is very little advanced in the transition structure, although this is variable with the nature of the leaving-group stabilisation. This is the first direct determination of the effect of strain on nucleofugality.

The spectra are assigned by comparison with related molecules and by analysis of the relative band intensities in the He(I) and He(II) spectra. The electronic effects of phenyl substitution are described.

Rationalisations among Heterocyclic Partition Coefficients Part 1: The π‐Value of Phenyl

AbstractIt is shown that πPh has a minimum theoretical value of ca. 1.7 in aromatic rings. This value is attained whenever phenyl is forced into a highly non‐planar conformation, as may happen through peri‐interactions or the heavy solvation of sterically hindering neighbouring groups. In the absence of such hindrance πPh will be greater, and can attain values as high as ca. 2.6 when there is no steric hindrance to coplanarity and two hetero‐atoms can be shielded. These and a number of intermediate situations are delineated; estimates of πPh are provided for each distinct case. The effect of phenyl substitution at sp3‐carbon is discussed in similar terms. It is shown that these variations make qualitative chemical sense and can be used for predictive purposes.

Kinetics of formation of substituted styrene oxides by reaction of 2-aryl- and 1-aryl-2-halogenoethanols with aqueous alkali

The kinetics of formation of m- and p-substituted styrene oxides by reaction of 1- and 2-aryl-2-halogenoethanols with aqueous alkali have been interpreted according to the Winstein–Lucas mechanism. The respective Hammett ρ values for overall reaction of 1- and 2-aryl-2-halogenoethanols are 0·32 and –1·13. The effects of substituents on the pre-equilibria have been estimated and it is concluded that the ρ values for the respective cyclizations are –0·34 and –1·61. The relative rates of dehalogenation of 2-halogeno-2-phenylethanols (kCl:kBr:kI= 0·035: 1·3:1) have been contrasted with those for other systems. The effect of phenyl substitution on the rate of formation of three-membered rings is discussed.

Acetolysis of phenyl-substitute endo- and exo-bicyclo[n,1,0]alkyl chlorides; evidence for concerted dis(2), nonconcerted dis(0) and partially ring-opened carbonium-ion mechanisms

A study of the effect of phenyl-substitution on the rate of reaction and products produced in the acetolysis of bicyclo[n,1,0]alkyl chlorides provides evidence for three different modes of ring-opening in the transformation of the cyclopropyl to allyl system.

Characteristic Infrared Frequencies of 3,3-Diphenylphthalides in the Region of 2000 to 330 Cm−1

The infrared spectra of ten 3,3-bis(phenyl)-phthalides were obtained in order to select frequencies characteristic of the phthalide ring system, and to observe the effects of phenyl substitution in the 3 position of the phthahde ring system. Bands characteristic of the phthahde ring system per se were observed near 1284 cm−1, 1107 cm−1, 1016 cm−1, 503 cm−1, and 479 cm−1. Bands characteristics of 3,3-bis (phenyl)-phthalides were seen near 632 cm−1, 530 cm−1, and 370 cm−1. The effect of substituents on the 3,3-phenyl rings upon frequency was noted for several bands, bands characteristic of these substituents were also observed These data indicate that the various bands can be used for identification of the 3,3-bis(phenyl)-phthalide structure.
