The purpose of this research was to study the effect of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation (EMP) of the millimeter (mm) range (wavelength – 7.1 mm, radiation frequency – 42.3 GHz, radiation power flux density – 0.1 mW / cm2, exposure 30 minutes, once) on the pigment composition and photosynthetic activity of juvenile plants of Triticum aestivum L., cultivar Selyanka, under osmotic stress caused by chloride salinity. To measure the intensity of photosynthesis, we used the assimilation flask method according to L. A. Ivanov and N. L. Kossovich, a colorimetric method was used to determine the amount of chlorophyll in wheat plants. Statistical processing of the data obtained was carried out using the Kruskell-Walliss test of reliability. All measurements and studies were carried out on equipment that passed metrological verification and expertise. The results of the study indicate that under the influence of low-intensity EMR of the MM range, the indicators of the amount of chlorophylls increase by 51.8 % compared to plants under osmotic stress; and compared with the control, the accumulation of chlorophyll increases by 23.2 %. In addition, the effect of this physical factor has a stimulating effect on the accumulation of chlorophyll and its content was 30.9 %, which is 46.6 % more than in the control variant. The stimulating effect of EMR is also observed at a concentration of 150 mM sodium chloride. With the use of EHF-radiation, the content of chlorophyll was 28.2 % of the mass of raw leaves, by 43.3 % compared to the experimental versions without the use of EHF-radiation. The intensity of photosynthesis under the influence of EHF-radiation increases in relation to the control by 14.0 %. Thus, a positive effect of low-intensity EMM of the mm range on the pigment composition and photosynthetic activity of Triticum aestivum L. both under optimal conditions and under conditions of osmotic stress has been established. The results obtained on the quantitative content of chlorophylls showed that their content increased both under normal conditions and under osmotic stress by an average of 20 %. An increase in the intensity of photosynthesis in experimental plants was established by 30.0 % in comparison with control plants under osmotic stress.

Influence of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation of the millimeter range on the antioxidant system of juvenile Glycine max L. plants under osmotic stress

This study is devoted to identifying the adaptogenic effect of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation (EMR) of the millimeter (MM) range (wavelength – 7.1 mm, radiation frequency – 42.3 GHz, radiation power flux density – 0.1 mW/cm2) on the antioxidant system indicators of juvenile plants Glycine max L., cv. Apollo under osmotic stress caused by salinity. The stimulating effect of millimeter-wave electromagnetic radiation on the content of proline and carotenoids in Glycine max L. plants was revealed. The results obtained on the quantitative content of carotenoids showed that their content increased both in the normal conditions and under osmotic stress by an average of 1.2–1.8 times. An increased content of free proline in leaves was found in comparison with soybean roots under optimal conditions and under salinity.

Adaptogenic effect of low-intensity millimeter-wave electromagnetic radiation on Glycine Max L. under osmotic stress

This study is devoted to identification of the adaptogenic effect of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation (EMR) of the millimeter (MM) range (wavelength – 7.1 mm, radiation frequency – 42.3 GHz, radiation power flux density – 0.1 mW/cm2) on seed germination and growth processes of Glycine max L., cultivar Apollo under osmotic stress. The stimulating effect of millimeter-wave electromagnetic radiation on seed germination, morphometric parameters (height of the aerial part, length of the main root, accumulation of wet and dry matter mass) in plants of Glycine max L., cultivar Apollo has been revealed. Thus, it has been shown that pre-sowing irradiation with this physical factor increases the salt tolerance of Glycine max L., cv. Apollo. Germination energy and laboratory germination increase on average by 8–12% at simulated chloride salinity in the experimental variants, compared to the control ones. The positive effect of low-intensity EMR of the MM range on the morphometric parameters of Glycine max L. was established, while the shoot height significantly increased by 14%, the length of the main root – by 18%, the weight of the wet matter – by 5–13% in the experimental plants compared to control conditions of chloride salinization.

Study of photobiomodulation effects with violet-blue and red light in experimental oncogenesis

Introduction. There is still an open question about the limits of medical use of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation of the optical range in tumor growth due to the risk of increased proliferation of tumor cells. The conditions under which the tumor process is stimulated, as well as the mechanisms of photobiomodulation in oncological pathology, remain unclear. The aim of the study - in vitro evaluation and comparison of the effect of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths of 400, 460 and 660 nm on the activity of free-radical processes in tumor tissue and blood in normal and growing experimental neoplasia. Materials and methods. The study was conducted on biological material obtained from white non-linear rats intact and with subcutaneously transplanted cholangiocellular cancer MS-1. The sources of low-intensity radiation with wavelengths of 400, 460 and 660 nm were led generators. The content of hemoglobin, the activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase, changes in the overall level of free radical processes and antioxidant activity by induced chemiluminescence, and DNA damage by the method of DNA comets were studied. Data analysis was performed using nonparametric statistics methods. Results. The multidirectional effect of radiation with wavelengths of 400, 460 and 660 nm on free-radical homeostasis indicators at the early and late stages of tumor growth, as well as the dependence of biological effects on the wavelength of radiation, was found. Conclusions. The results obtained allow making a number of assumptions about the mechanisms of action of the optical electromagnetic waves on tumor growth, modulating free radical processes in the tumor-bearing organism.

Long-term effects of electromagnetic radiation of the mobile phone frequency on the morphofunctional state of the reproductive system of rats and males and their offspring

The experiment established the long-term effects of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation from a mobile phone (EMR MP 1745 MHz, xpd = 7.5 ± 0.3 μW/cm2) in the offspring of male rats from parents, one of which was either subjected to a prolonged exposure of the investigated factor. A change in the sex ratio of the born offspring and a decrease in their body weight have been established. The analysis of the reproductive system of the offspring of males when they reached the age of 2 and 4 months, revealed significant impairments, with the most pronounced changes found in the offspring obtained from both the irradiated parents or when only the male was irradiated. These changes are manifested in the disruption of the normal functioning of the spermatogenic epithelium, namely, an intensification of the initial stage of spermatogenesis is noted, with a significant inhibition at the stage of spermatid transformation. A decrease in the number of mature germ cells – spermatozoa and a pronounced deterioration of their viability, as well as an increase in testosterone secretion is established. The revealed violations in the morphofunctional state of the reproductive system of the offspring suggest that the trans-generation effect of EMR exposure generated by cellular sources can be considered as a factor affecting the decline in the male fertility.

Intracellular regeneration of adrenocorticocytes in response to the prophylactic application of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation under the conditions of radiation (an experimental study)

Adaptation of the organism to the action of certain damaging factors, including radiation, is closely related to the state of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system. The important role in its activities is played by adrenocorticocytes (ACC) - the cells of the fascicular zone of the adrenal cortex. The disturbance of the structure and function of these cells can significantly impair and limit the development of the adaptive reactions in the body. One of the most promising ways to prevent the post-radiation changes in adrenocorticocytes consists of the application of the non-pharmacological therapeutic factors, such as low-intensity electromagnetic radiation (EMR) of ultra high frequency ( UHF) and the low-frequency (LF) magnetic field (MF) of low intensity (LI) after the exposition of the cells to the action of radiation. The objective of the present study was to identify the ultrastructural regenerative - adaptive changes in ACC of the fascicular zone of the adrenal gland in response to the primary preventive action of ultra high frequency EMR, microwave oven, and low-intensity MF after the exposition of the cells to the action of radiation. The investigations were carried using the outbred male rats (180-200 gr body weight). The experimental animals were allocated to four groups two of which had been preliminarily treated by the application of ultra high frequency EMR and low-intensity MF and were thereafter exposed to radiation. The animals of the third group were exposed to radiation alone without the treatment with the therapeutic physical factors and served as controls whereas the animals of the fourth group underwent no treatment whatever and were regarded as intact. Transmission electron microscopy was used to count light and dark adrenocorticocytes of the fascicular zone. The morphometric analysis of mitochondria included the determination of their number, the average and the total area per standard cell area, and the number of cristae per average area of mitochondria). In addition, the analysis of the lipid content and protein-synthesizing organelles was performed. The study has demonstrated that the primary prophylactic application of ultra high frequency EMR and the low-frequency MF caused stimulation of the cellular and intracellular regenerative-adaptive reactions and increased the resistance of the ultrastructure of ACC in the fascicular zone of the adrenal glands to the action of radiation. These changes were most pronounced in response to the application of ultra high frequency EMR. The resulting structural-adaptive rearrangements of the organelles (the enlargement of mitochondria with the simultaneous increase in the number of cristae, hyperplasia of ribosomes and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, preservation of membranes) were largely due to antioxidative and membrane-stabilizing effects of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation of ultra high frequency and were directly related to the formation of the mechanisms of ACC radioprotection. The Increased regenerative-adaptive potential of these cells prevented the development of the dystrophic processes and protected the adrenocorticocytes from aggressive radiation. The results of the present study suggests the necessity of the further studies on the action of the non-pharmacological therapeutic factors, especially low-intensity electromagnetic radiation (EMR) of ultra high frequency and the low-frequency magnetic field of low intensity as the tools for the prevention of post-radiation changes in the adrenocorticocytes of the fascicular zone of the adrenal cortex exposed to the action of radiation.

Purpose: To study the condition of the reproductive system of the male rats at three generations (F1–F3) received from irradiated parents and who were exposed daily to the mobile phone (1745 MHz, 8 hours/day) until reaching the age of 6 months. Material and methods: The white rats aged 52–54 days were subjected to electromagnetic exposure from the mobile phone (1745 MHz, 8 hours/day, power density 0.2–20 μW/cm2, x = 7.5±0.3 μW/cm2) for 90 days. The irradiated males and females were then mated in a 1:2 ratio. The females throughout the gestation period (20–21 days) and the offspring (F1) obtained from them continued to be irradiated under the above-mentioned regimen until reaching the age of 6 months. The animals of the 1st generation (males and females) at the age of 4 months mated for the generation of the second generation, and from them in the same way received the offspring of the third generation. The state of the reproductive system of male rats of 3 generations was evaluated at the age of 2, 4 and 6 months. Results: It is established that birth rate at the irradiated animals of three generations authentically falls. This posterity from 8 females makes 53, 86 and 45 % respectively in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation of the control group. The electromagnetic effect affected the weight of the testicles and epididymis of rats of three generations, mainly at the age of 4 and 6 months. The mass of testicles increased at animals of the 3 generation at the age of 4 months and at animals of the 3rd generation at the age of 6 months. The mass of epididymis generally increases at animals of 4 months of the F1–F3, but at the age of 6 months in the 1st generation falls, and correlates with a decrease in the number of epididymal spermatozoa. There is also a decrease in the absolute and relative mass of seminal vesicles in irradiated animals of three generations at the age of 2 months. At exposed animals of 3 generations of 2 months there are no significant deviations in the process of spermatogenesis, however at the age of 4 and 6 months there are significant violations of the number of spermatids of different types. In male rats of the 1st generation at the age of 2 and 6 months exposed to EMP in the prenatal and postnatal periods and obtained from irradiated parents, a drop in the number of epididymal spermatozoa is observed, while in the irradiated animals of the 2nd and 3rd generation at the age of 2 months, there is a marked increase in the number of these cells. Their viability is reduced in all age groups (2, 4 and 6 months), which is statistically significant at the age of 2 and 4 months of animals of the 1st generation. In male rats of 1–3 generations at the age of 2 months and in 4 months 2nd generation, there was a significant decreased the concentration of testosterone in the blood serum by 65.8, 43.6, 82.8 and 93.4 %, respectively. Conclusions: The long-term effect of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation from the mobile phone on the body of rats of males and females, leads to a decrease in the birth rate of irradiated animals, which reaches 45 % in the third generation. Significant changes in the studied indicators of the reproductive system of male rats of three generations are revealed, which is reflected in a decrease in the number of epididymal spermatozoa in the 1st generation and in a significant increase in the 2nd and 3rd generation – early puberty, in the fall of their viability and the predominant decrease in the concentration of testosterone in the blood serum.

The distinguishing effects of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation of different extremely high frequencies on Enterococcus hirae: growth rate inhibition and scanning electron microscopy analysis.

A stronger inhibitory effect of low-intensity electromagnetic field on Enterococcus hirae ATCC 9790 bacterial growth rate was observed with 53GHz vs 51·8GHz, regardless of exposure duration. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that almost all irradiated cells in the population have spherical shapes similar to nonirradiated ones, but they have increased diameters in case of irradiated cells at 53GHz, but not 51·8GHz. The results are novel, showing distinguishing effects of low-intensity electromagnetic field of different frequencies. They could be applied in treatment of food and different products in medicine and veterinary, where E.hirae plays an important role.

A60: Signs of cell–cell interactions and ultrastructural changes in the tumor under the effective impact of the weak microwave radiation on the central nervous system and peritumoral zone in the experiment

Background It has previously been shown that additional local electromagnetic impact on the tumor en-hances the systemic antitumor effect of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation (EMR) used in the activation therapy regimes designed by Garkavi L.H. et al. (1990–2008). At the same time the question of the influence of weak EMR, applied to the peritumoral area, on the tumor development has not been studied. The aim of the study was to investigate the changes in the tumor caused by low-intensity microwave electromagnetic radiation of bioeffective frequency that acted on the head and peritumoral zone. Materials and methods The effects of resonance radiation (RR) with frequency corresponding to that of one of the water-containing medium radiations – 1 GHz (“SPE-effect”) – were studied on 53 adult male outbred white rats with transplantable sarcoma 45. Special anticancer agents were not used. The power flux density of RR was less than 1 μW/cm2, surface area of the emitter – 4 cm2, 3–10 min. exposure depending on algorithms of the activation therapy. RR exposure in different groups of animals was localized to the head only, or to the peri-tumoral area only, or successively to the head and peritumoral area (“double” exposure). The course lasted for 4 weeks. The exposure effect was assessed according to the dynamics of the tumor size and results of the light and electron microscopy analysis of tumor changes (JEOL JEM-1011, Japan). Results The effect of RR in different groups of animals depended on the exposure localization. Central systemic exposure was decisive. The group receiving RR localized to the head showed regression of the tumor or inhibition of its growth in 60% of animals – almost complete tumor regression in 10% and tumor growth inhibition by 70% in the rest cases. RR to the peritumoral area did not show significant influence on the tumor development, while it increased antitumor effect of the central exposure (p μ m width. Different numbers of lymphocytes and plasma cells were noted in tumor cells. Macrophages were found. Migrating lymphocytes were often noted in the vessels among tumor cells. Electron microscopy showed multiple contacts of lymphocytes with the surface of tumor cells through cytoplasmic excrescences. Such lymphocytes had distinct signs of activation. Simultaneous contacts of lymphocytes and macrophages among themselves and with tumor cells were found. Analysis of ultrastructural characteristics of cells in regressing tumors and detection of collagen in intercellular spaces during histochemical examination of tumor tissues showed the increase in the degree of differentiation of some sarcoma 45 cells. Conclusion Possibility to increase the systemic antitumor effect of the low-intensity microwave radiation with an additional weak exposure on the peritumoral area was demonstrated for the first time. Damaging effect of RR on tumor was mediated by the changes in composition and activity of elements of the tumor’s immune microenvironment and by the increase in the degree of differentiation of some tumor cells, probably under the influence of bioactive factors of leukocytic origin.

Effect of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation on structurization properties of bacterial lipopolysaccharide

Purpose — to investigate the effects of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation on the process of dehydration selforganization of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Material and Methods — The method of wedge dehydration has been used to study the structure formation of bacterial LPS. Image-phases analysis included their qualitative characteristics, as well as the calculation of quantitative indicators, followed by statistical analysis. Results — Low-intensity ultra high frequency (UHF) radiation (1 GHz, 0.1 μW/cm2, 10 min) has led to the changes in the suspension system of the LPS-saline reflected in the kinetics of structure formation. Conclusion — 1 GHz corresponds to the natural frequency of oscillation of water clusters and, presumably, the effect of UHF on structure of LPS mediates through the changes in water-salt environment. Under these conditions, properties of water molecules of hydration and possibly the properties of hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions in the molecule of LPS, which can affect the ability of toxin molecules to form aggregates change. Therefore the LPS structure modification may result in the change of its toxic properties.

The Non-Electromagnetic Action of Photons on Biological Systems. Spin Supercurrent

The paper aims at showing that there is a physical process that might account for the non-electromagnetic action of photons on biological systems. An analogy is shown between the effects of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation and the effects of biologically active substances in ultra-low doses on biological systems and also the features of quantum correlation of photons. The analogy may be due to the same physical mechanism underlying the phenomena. It is of importance that quantum correlations of photons are effected by non-electromagnetic forces. A comparison is drawn between the features of quantum correlations in such quantum macrosystem as superfluid 3He-B and the experimentally established properties of quantum correlations of photons. It is shown that quantum correlations (and, consequently, the effects of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation on biological systems) may be due to spin supercurrents, whose properties are like those of spin supercurrents emerging between spin structures in superfluid 3He-B, the spin supercurrents being of non-electromagnetic nature. It is shown that the non-electromagnetic action of photons on a biological system may be performed by spin supercurrents emerging between the spin structures produced by the photons and biological system in the physical vacuum. The spin supercurrent speed may exceed that of light, because the spin supercurrent is not accompanied by the birth of a mass, as it is in the motion of a body (the relativistic increase in mass) or in the motion of photon (the kinetic mass of photon), and therefore has no inertial properties

An analogy between effects of ultra-low doses of biologically active substances on biological objects and properties of spin supercurrents in superfluid 3He-B

The effects of ultra-low doses (ULDs) of biologically active substances (BASs) (with concentrations of 10(-13)M or lower) on biological objects (BOs), such as cells, organisms, etc., and the properties of spin supercurrents in superfluid (3)He-B are discussed. It is shown that the effects of ULDs of BASs on biologic objects can be specified by the same set of physical characteristics and described by the same mathematical relations as those used for the specification and description of the properties of spin supercurrents between spin structures in superfluid (3)He-B. This is based on the up-to-date physical concepts: 1) the physical vacuum has the properties of superfluid (3)He-B; 2) all quantum entities (hence, the BAS and the BO, which consist of such entities) produce spin structures in the physical vacuum. The photon being a quantum entity, the features of the effects of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation on BOs can be explained using the same approach.

The debate regarding the health effects of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation from sources such as power lines, base stations, and cell phones has recently been reignited. Wireless communication has dramatically influenced our lifestyle; its impact on human health has not been completely assessed. Widespread concern continues in the community about the deleterious effects of radiofrequency radiations on human tissues and the subsequent potential threat of carcinogenesis. Exposure to low-frequency electromagnetic field has been linked to a variety of adverse health outcomes. This article surveys the results of early cell phone studies, where exposure duration was too short to expect tumor genesis, and 2 sets of more recent studies with longer exposure duration: the Interphone studies and the Swedish studies led by Hardell.

Cell phones and brain tumors: a review including the long-term epidemiologic data

Background The debate regarding the health effects of low-intensity electromagnetic radiation from sources such as power lines, base stations, and cell phones has recently been reignited. In the present review, the authors attempt to address the following question: is there epidemiologic evidence for an association between long-term cell phone usage and the risk of developing a brain tumor? Included with this meta-analysis of the long-term epidemiologic data are a brief overview of cell phone technology and discussion of laboratory data, biological mechanisms, and brain tumor incidence. Methods In order to be included in the present meta-analysis, studies were required to have met all of the following criteria: (i) publication in a peer-reviewed journal; (ii) inclusion of participants using cell phones for ≥10 years (ie, minimum 10-year “latency”); and (iii) incorporation of a “laterality” analysis of long-term users (ie, analysis of the side of the brain tumor relative to the side of the head preferred for cell phone usage). This is a meta-analysis incorporating all 11 long-term epidemiologic studies in this field. Results The results indicate that using a cell phone for ≥10 years approximately doubles the risk of being diagnosed with a brain tumor on the same (“ipsilateral”) side of the head as that preferred for cell phone use. The data achieve statistical significance for glioma and acoustic neuroma but not for meningioma. Conclusion The authors conclude that there is adequate epidemiologic evidence to suggest a link between prolonged cell phone usage and the development of an ipsilateral brain tumor.

Evidence for Dependence of Resonant Frequency of Millimeter Wave Interaction withEscherichia coliK12 Cells on Haploid Genome Length

The method of anomalous viscosity time dependence (AVTD) was used to study the influence of millimeter electromagnetic radiation (EMR) on the genome conformational state (GCS) of Escherichiu coli K12 cells. Strain N99 of wild-type, lysogenic strains N99(A) and N99(λ,λimm434bio10) were used. In the 41.28-41.37 GHz and 51.73-51.79 GHz ranges the resonance effect of low-intensity EMR (10-10 W/cm2) on the GCS of N99 cells was shown. The resonance frequencies were 41.324 ± 0.001 GHz and 51.765 ± 0.002 GHz, respectively. The insertion in bacterial chromosome of prophage λ [strain N99(λ)] and prophage λimm434bio10 [strain N99(λ, λimm434bio10)] reduced both resonance frequencies considerably. The decrease of both resonance frequencies was proportionate to the increase of the haploid genome length. Shifts of the resonance frequency were not accompanied by change in the sign of effective circular EMR polarization.
