Latex piezoelectric immunoassay: Effect of interfacial properties

Latex piezoelectric immunoassay is a technique for detecting agglutination of antibody- or antigen-bearing latex by an immunoreaction using a piezoelectric quartz crystal; the agglutination decreases the oscillation frequency of the crystal. This is advantageous in that immobilization of antibody or antigen on the crystal surface is unnecessary. In this report, different kinds of chemical functional groups were immobilized on the electrode surface, allowing us to consider the effect of interfacial structure on the frequency change. Electrode modifications such as self-assembly of alkanethiol and aminoalkoxysilane monolayers, and polyethylenimine-glutaraldehyde coating as well as plasma treatment were examined. The sensitivity of the system was found to imitate the interfacial properties so that modification of the electrode surface could improve the response. Among the methods examined for this electrode surface modification, the polyethylenimine-glutaraldehyde modification had the advantages of high reproducibility, fast operation and simplicity. It was also suggested that the frequency change originated primarily from the immunoreaction at the interface.

Interfacial structure and giant magnetoresistance in Fe/Cr superlattices

A correlation between interfacial structure and giant magnetoresistance (GMR) has been established for Fe/Cr superlattices [1-8]. However, previous studies were qualitative in that the interfacial structural disorder was expressed in terms of growth temperature, sputtering pressure or annealing temperature. In order to understand more quantitatively the effects of interfacial structure on GMR, we have undertaken [9] parallel measurements of x-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetoresistance for two Fe/Cr samples subjected to a series of anneals at successively higher temperatures, both samples having initial GMR > 50%. Such anneals are known to increase the thickness of the Fe/Cr interface through atomic diffusion, a structural change which can be characterized quantitatively by XRD

Evaluation on Interfacial Microstructure of Composite Materials by Fractal Geometry

The interfacial structure formed with silane coupling agents influences the inter-facial properties between the reinforcement and matrix in glass fiber reinforced composite. However, the interfacial structure at the molecular level has not yet been evaluated sufficiently. Therefore, a numerical analysis method is expected to estimate the interfacial structure on a molecular level. In this study, we proposed a formation model of interfacial structure, and tried to evaluate the model with fractal dimensions that can classify complex shapes. We proposed a model of interfacial structure for the finite element method, and investigated the relationship between the interfacial structure and the stress transmission mechanism. Moreover, we compared the results of numerical analysis with interfacial transmissibility in order to verify this analysis method. It was clear that the difference in interfacial structure influenced the mechanical properties at the interface. The above result suggests that this analysis method is useful for the investigation of the effects of interfacial structure on the interfacial properties.

Effect of interfacial microstructure on magnetic properties of dysprosium multilayers

Nanostructured multilayers of Dy/M (M=Ta, Cu, Y, and Co) have been investigated. Correlations between the microstructure and the magnetic properties, in particular the effects of interfacial structure, are discussed. The temperature and layer-thickness dependences of anisotropy of these Dy/M multilayers can be interpreted reasonably in light of the model previously developed for the perpendicular anisotropy in amorphous multilayers.

The influence of interfacial structure on the mechanical properties of liquid-phase-sintered aluminum-ceramic composites

The effect of interfacial structure on the mechanical properties of aluminum-ceramic composite materials fabricated by liquid phase sintering was studied. The composites were based on two matrix alloys (powder metallurgy alloys 201 and 601) reinforced with either Al 2O 3 or SiC particulate. Characterization of the interfacial regions demonstrated that the SiC-matrix interfaces were faceted whereas the Al 2O 3-matrix interfaces had an incomplete layer of a silicon-rich amorphous phase. Preferential attack of the particles during sintering is believed to cause the crystallographic facets to form on SiC. Locally high silicon concentrations near Al 2O 3 particles led to the formation of a glassy phase from the reduction of Al 2O 3. The difference in interfacial structure resulted in a higher particle-matrix bond strength and therefore improved composite mechanical properties in the SiC-reinforced materials compared with the Al 2O 3-reinforced materials.
