High-intensity intermittent training ameliorates methotrexate-induced acute lung injury

Inflammation and oxidative stress are recognized as two primary causes of lung damage induced by methotrexate, a drug used in the treatment of cancer and immunological diseases. This drug triggers the generation of oxidants, leading to lung injury. Given the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT), our aim was to evaluate the therapeutic potential of HIIT in mitigating methotrexate-induced lung damage in rats. Seventy male Wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups: CTL (Control), HIIT (High-intensity intermittent training), ALI (Acute Lung Injury), HIIT+ALI (pretreated with HIIT), and ALI + HIIT (treated with HIIT).HIIT sessions were conducted for 8 weeks. At the end of the study, assessments were made on malondialdehyde, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (Gpx), myeloperoxidase (MPO), interleukin 10 (IL-10), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), gene expression of T-bet, GATA3, FOXP3, lung wet/dry weight ratio, pulmonary capillary permeability, apoptosis (Caspase-3), and histopathological indices.Methotrexate administration resulted in increased levels of TNF-α, MPO, GATA3, caspase-3, and pulmonary edema indices, while reducing the levels of TAC, SOD, Gpx, IL-10, T-bet, and FOXP3. Pretreatment and treatment with HIIT reduced the levels of oxidant and inflammatory factors, pulmonary edema, and other histopathological indicators. Concurrently, HIIT increased the levels of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory factors.

Present study aimed to examine the effects of high-intensity intermittent training on metabolic or circulatory parameters and exercise time during 30s-lasting exhaustive exercise. Six healthy males (22 ± 1yrs) had an intermittent training four days a week for four weeks. The intermittent training consisted of 8 or more sets of 20s exercise bout at an intensity of 170%VO2 max separated by 10-s recovery. Before and after training period, VO2 max and maximal accumulated O2 deficit (MAOD) were determined as indices of metabolic capacity. During 30s-lasting exhaustive exercise, VO2, O2 deficit, and circulatory parameters, such as heart rate, stroke volume, and cardiac output, were also determined every 10s. After the training, VO2 max and MAOD were significantly increased. During 30s-lasting exhaustive exercise, exercise time, stroke volume, and cardiac output were also significantly enhanced. However, no significant differences were observed in VO2 and O2 deficit every 10s during 30s-lasting exhaustive exercise. Therefore, these findings suggest that high-intensity intermittent training enhances exercise time during 30s-lasting exhaustive exercise and that the improvement of exercise performance is closely related to an increase in anaerobic capacity.

Effects of high-intensity intermittent training on some inflammatory and muscle damage indices in overweight middle-aged men

IntroductionRecently, the use of various high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT) that have quick recovery periods are of great importance. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to investigate the acute effect of HIIT training on the serum levels of inflammatory and muscle damage indices in overweight middle-aged men, as well as the kinetics of these markers at 1, 24, and 48 h after HIIT training. MethodsTwenty-two middle-aged men (40–60 years, BMI 25–30 kg/m2) were divided into two training (n=12) and control (n=10) groups. The HIIT training program consisted of running on treadmill for 30 s with an intensity of 100% maximum aerobic speed (MAV), 30 s active recovery with 50% aerobic speed (4 sets, 4 repetitions and 5 min of rest between each round). Cortisol, IL-6, CRP, ALT, AST, CPK and LDH were evaluated in pre-test, one- hour, 24 and 48 h after HIIT training. ResultsExcept for the CRP variable, Cortisol, IL-6, CPK, LDH, ALT and AST had a significant increase in one- hour after HIIT compared to the pre-test (P<0.05). Also, IL-6 and CPK variables had a significant increase in 24 h and only CPK had a significant increase in 48 h after HIIT training compared to pre-test (P<0.05). ConclusionOverall, due to long rest intervals and low activity time during HIIT, inflammatory responses and muscle damage are not severe. The recovery periods of inflammatory and muscle damage markers are faster, so this type of response can be considered an advantage for overweight middle-aged men.

ANÁLISE DO EFEITO DO TREINAMENTO INTERMITENTE DE ALTA INTENSIDADE PARA JOVENS ATLETAS

ABSTRACT Introduction The CPC Central Committee and the State Council have pointed out that currently, the basic indicators of young students’ physical health have completely declined. This circumstance has made adolescent physical health and improving the quality of young athletes a key issue in physical education targeting adolescents. Objective Investigate the effect of high-intensity intermittent training on young athletes. Methods 24 adolescents performed 10 intermittent high-intensity training for one month, and all athletes’ pre and post-training indexes were collected and compared. Results The physical examination results of male and female athletes improved to some extent (athletes’ blood pressure fluctuated during the 10 training sessions, increasing slightly, and heart rate variability increased considerably (P &lt; 0.05). Conclusion High-intensity intermittent training has a good effect on health promotion in young athletes, and can effectively improve their physical function and competitive performance. Physical education teachers and student-athletes should conduct relevant training. In addition, this training method also fits the current learning life situation of high school students. Efectos del entrenamiento intermitente de alta intensidad sobre el perfil lipídico y la glucosa en sangre en estudiantes universitarios con sobrepeso/obesidad

Introduction: High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) involves developing exercises in short periods of time with high intensity, followed by periods of rest between the series of exercises performed, and is considered an important tool to combat obesity. Therefore, the present work aimed to identify the effects of high-intensity intermittent training on the lipid profile in overweight and obese university students. Materials and methods: quasi-experimental study, consisting of a sample of 30 students, who were randomly assigned into two groups of 15 students, thus leaving a control group (continuous training): 15 and an experimental group (intermittent exercise of high intensity: 15. Moreover, there were carried out Laboratory tests before and after training to find the lipid profile. Also, the realization of 20 training sessions, which were distributed three times a week, with an average duration of 50 minutes. Additionally, the performed of statistical tests with a level of statistical significance of p &lt;0.05. Results: there is a statistically significant relationship in the HDL value of the control and experimental group. The Glucose values show statistically significant relationships in the experimental group (p = 0.001). Conclusions: Intermittent high-intensity training and continuous moderate-intensity work generate a decrease in LDL and Triglycerides variables and an increase in HDL. However, they are not statistically significant after 20 training sessions. However, high-intensity intermittent training results in glucose-lowering in overweight and obese people.

EFFECTS OF PUERARIA LOBATA COMBINED WITH HIGH-INTENSITY INTERMITTENT TRAINING ON SKELETAL MUSCLE QUALITY AND GENE EXPRESSION

ABSTRACT Extraction of effective components from Pueraria lobata has important value for skeletal muscle quality and gene expression. The improvement effect of traditional high-intensity intermittent training on skeletal muscle has not been obvious, and it is difficult to guarantee the properties of some volatiles. Based on this, this paper analyzes the effect of high-intensity intermittent training on skeletal muscle quality and gene expression in Pueraria lobata. Based on a brief summary of extraction of Pueraria lobata, status of research on the pharmaceutical components of Pueraria lobata was summarized. Different specimens of Pueraria lobata were selected as research objects, and the process of high-intensity intermittent training was designed. High-intensity intermittent training, solvent extraction and water solvent extraction were combined together to design the fixed-bed continuous extraction scheme. According to the influence of Pueraria lobata on skeletal muscle quality, the influence of intermittent training on skeletal muscle quality was analyzed. The extraction results showed that Pueraria lobata combined with high-intensity intermittent training can effectively improve the content of skeletal muscle and ensure the effective expression of skeletal muscle gene.

The Effects of Eight-Week High-Intensity Intermittent Training on Body Composition, Aerobic and Anaerobic Performance, Lipid Profile and Hematological Indices in Sedentary Healthy Overweight Adolescent: A Comparison of Volume

Background: Research on the effects of high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT) with different volumes on cardiovascular risk factors is limited. Objectives: The current study aimed to determine the effects of eight-week of high-intensity intermittent training and to compare the volumes of training programs on body composition, fitness factors, and cardiovascular risk factors in overweight students. Methods: There were thirty overweight boys (13 - 16years) as the participants of the study who were randomly divided into three groups, including the control group (n = 10), HIIT-1 (n = 10), and MIIT-2 (n = 10). The HIIT-1 group program included 2 × 8 - 15 sets (100 - 110% MAV), and the HIIT-2 group training program included 4 × 4 - 6 sets (100 - 110% MAV). These training programs continued three times a week for eight weeks. Yo-Yo recovery test, RAST test, and ELISA technique were applied to measure aerobic and anaerobic performance, lipid profile, and hematological indices, respectively. Results: The findings showed that except for anaerobic performance and hematological variables in the HIIT-1 group and hematological variables in the HIIT-2 group, other research variables of the two training groups were significantly different from the pre-test (P &lt; 0.05). Besides, in between-group comparison, the findings revealed that there was a significant difference between VO2max, HDL, and TG as well as anaerobic performance between the HIIT-1 and HIIT-2 groups (P &lt; 0.05). Conclusions: The results suggest that HIIT-1 program is suitable to increase aerobic performance and reduce cardiovascular risk factors, while HIIT-2 program may be applied to increase anaerobic performance because the volume of exercises plays a decisive role in possible adaptation resulting from such exercises.

The Effect of High-Intensity Intermittent Training on the Acute Gait Plantar Pressure in Healthy Young Adults

High-intensity intermittent training (HIIT) has been successfully applied in various sports activities, as HIIT was considered as one of the most efficient training methods of exercise for improving physical performance and reducing the weight of overweight individuals. However, its acute effects of HIIT on gait and balance performance were not addressed. Thus, in this study we examined the acute effects of HIIT on dynamic postural control compared with steady-state training (SST) by analyzing plantar pressure parameters. In this study, sixteen healthy male adults were examined in 3 days. After exhaustive ramp-like cycle ergometer testing, the maximal heart rate (HRmax) of each participant was determined on the first day, then either a 20 minutes HIIT at 80–90% of HRmax or a 20 minutes SST at 60% of HRmax was randomly performed on the second and third day, respectively. Plantar pressure parameters were collected at comfortable walking velocity immediately after HIIT and SST respectively, and compared with the baseline data of plantar pressure gathered before maximal ramp test on the first day. The results showed significant differences in the plantar pressure in these three conditions of gait. Compared to pre-intervention and pre-SST, peak pressure and maximum force in the middle and lateral metatarsal increased significantly in post-HIIT. Meanwhile, the foot balance data indicate that post-HIIT exhibits more foot pronation than baseline. The center of pressure (COP) trajectory was medially shifted during the stance phase in post-SST, and noticeably in post-HIIT. The displacement and velocity of medial-lateral COP in the initial contact phase were greater in post-HIIT; while during the forefoot contact phase, post-HIIT showed fewer time percentages and greater velocity of medial-lateral COP. In conclusion, a single high-intensity intermittent training session adversely affected the acute dynamic postural control than steady-state training in healthy male adults.

Interleukin-15 and creatine kinase response to high-intensity intermittent exercise training

To verify the acute and chronic effects of high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT) on interleukin 15 (IL-15) response and the relationship between circulating IL-15 concentrations and muscle damage in young men. Physically active men performed two different training protocols at moderate and high intensity, three times per week for 5 weeks. Twenty subjects were randomly allocated into high-intensity intermittent training group (HIIT-5 km 1 min at 100% of maximal aerobic speed interspersed by 1 min passive recovery; n = 10) or moderate-intensity continuous training group (MICT-5 km 70% of maximal aerobic speed; n = 10). An acute exercise session was performed with blood sample collection pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise, and 60 min post-exercise (before and after 5 weeks of training). Blood samples were used to analyze serum IL-15 and creatine kinase (CK) concentrations. The results showed no changes in serum IL-15 concentrations independent of protocol, moment measurement, and intervention period. CK concentrations showed higher values post-exercise when compared to pre-exercise in both protocols. No significant relationship was found between serum IL-15 and CK concentrations. Our findings point to the absence of acute and chronic changes in serum IL-15 concentrations in response to 5 weeks of high-intensity intermittent training. In addition, data suggest that the release of this cytokine is not related to muscle damage in healthy young men.

Impact of 5-week high-intensity interval training on indices of cardio metabolic health in men

PurposeTo compare the acute and chronic effects of high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on indices of cardio-metabolic health: (HDL-c, total cholesterol, triglycerides, heart ratio, and phase angle/PhA) in physically active men. MethodsTwenty active men were randomly allocated to HIIT (n = 10), or MICT (n = 10) for 5 weeks, three times per week. HIIT consisted of running 5 km with 1-min at 100% of maximal aerobic speed interspersed by 1-min passive recovery while subjects in MICT group ran continuously the same 5 km at 70% of maximal aerobic speed. Blood samples were collected at different moments during the first and last exercise session. Before and after 5 weeks of both exercise training protocols, heart ratio (during exercise session) and PhA were measured pre and post-exercise training. ResultsFasting HDL-c levels did not change after 5 weeks of HIIT or MICT. Perceptual variation of HDL pre and post training (fed state) tended to differ between HIIT and MICT (p = 0.09). All lipoproteins parameters (HDL-c, total cholesterol, triglycerides and non-HDL) were increased in post-acute exercise session compared to pre-exercise during the first and last training session, these being observed after both training protocols. PhA and heart rate measured at different times during the first and last training session were not affected in both training protocols. ConclusionThese results indicate that HIIT and MICT modify the post-exercise lipoprotein profile acutely. On the other hand, only HIIT tended to increase HDL-c levels chronically.

The combined effect of high-intensity intermittent training and vitamin D supplementation on glycemic control in overweight and obese adults.

High‐intensity intermittent training (HIIT) has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic conditions including the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Independently, a low vitamin D status has also been linked to the prevalence of T2DM. The aim of this study was to investigate if there was a synergistic metabolic effect of HIIT and vitamin D supplementation on glycemic control. A total of 20 male and female participants (age, 34 ± 9 year; BMI, 31.4 ± 2.8 kg·m−2) completed 6 weeks HIIT, and were randomized to ingest 100 μg·day‐1 of vitamin D3 or placebo. Response to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was determined at baseline and at 72 h postintervention. Glucose tolerance was improved as a result of the HIIT intervention, shown through a reduction in glucose and insulin concentrations during the OGTT, accompanied by a decrease in glucose (829 ± 110 to 786 ± 139 mmol·h−1·L−1; P = 0.043) and insulin (8101 ± 4755–7024 ± 4489 mU·h−1·L−1; P = 0.049) area under the curve (AUC). Supplementation increased 25‐hydroxyvitamin D3 concentration by 120% to a sufficiency status (P < 0.001). However, the consumption of vitamin D3 seemed to attenuate the glucose response during an OGTT. Triglyceride content was lowered following the intervention (P = 0.025). There was no effect of the intervention on insulin sensitivity (IS) indices: ISIM atsuda and HOMA‐IR. Our findings demonstrate that HIIT improves glucose tolerance in nondiabetic overweight and obese adults; however vitamin D3 supplementation did not proffer any additional positive effects on the measured indices of metabolic health.

Evaluation of motor proficiency and adiponectin in adolescent students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder after high-intensity intermittent training

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition with frequent comorbidities such as obesity, troubled relationships, low self-esteem, and difficulty in motor proficiency. This study aims to elucidate the effect of high-intensity intermittent training on motor proficiency, adiponectin, and insulin resistance in adolescent students with ADHD disorder. Fifty adolescent students of both genders with ADHD diagnosis participated and assigned into four experimental groups (each group with 15 girls and 10 boys students; two experimental and two control groups). High-intensity intermittent training was performed continuously 3 times a week for 6 weeks in experimental groups. Serum adiponectin level significantly increased in the experimental groups of both genders after 6 weeks intermittent training while insulin resistance levels were markedly decreased. Furthermore, motor proficiency score were significantly improved in the experimental groups of both genders. In addition gender had no significant impact on adiponectin, insulin resistance and motor proficiency rating. The findings of this study suggest that high intensity intermittent training improved physiological systems in ADHD population that leads to reduce risk factors for future development of comorbidities.

Effects of High-Intensity Intermittent Training on Vascular Function in Obese Preadolescent Boys.

High-intensity intermittent training (HIIT) may serve as an effective alternative to traditional endurance training, since HIIT has been shown to induce greater improvements in aerobic fitness and health-related markers in adult populations. Our objective was to determine whether HIIT and supramaximal high-intensity intermittent training (supra-HIIT) would improve vascular structure and function in obese preadolescent boys. Before the baseline testing, 48 obese preadolescent boys, aged 8-12 years, were randomly assigned into control (CON; n = 16), HIIT (8 × 2 minutes at 90% peak power output, n = 16), and supra-HIIT (8 × 20 seconds at 170% peak power output, n = 16) groups. Both exercise groups performed exercises on a cycle ergometer three times/week for 12 weeks. After 12 weeks, both HIIT and supra-HIIT did not affect body mass, body fat percentage, and waist circumference. Peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) increased in both HIIT and supra-HIIT groups (p < 0.05). Both HIIT and supra-HIIT groups had higher resting metabolic rate than the control group (p < 0.05). A measure of arterial stiffness, brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity, and carotid intima-media thickness decreased after 12 weeks of HIIT and supra-HIIT program (all p < 0.05). Flow-mediated dilation, a measure of endothelium-dependent vasodilation, increased in both HIIT and supra-HIIT groups (all p < 0.05). It is concluded that both HIIT and supra-HIIT have favorable effects on aerobic capacity, metabolic rate, vascular function and structure, and blood lipid profile in obese preadolescent boys. HIIT may be a time efficient and effective exercise for preventing future cardiovascular disease in obese children.

Soccer training: high-intensity interval training is mood disturbing while small sided games ensure mood balance.

The aim of the study was to compare the effects of high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT) versus small-sided games (SSG) in soccer on both the physiological responses and the mood state of players. Sixteen professional soccer players took part in the study (age: 24.1±0.9 years). Testing of players was conducted on separate days in a randomized and counter-balanced order (each training session: 28 minutes: 4x4 minutes work with 3 minutes of passive recovery in-between). Effort: HIIT: intermittent 15-s runs at 110% maximal aerobic speed with 15 seconds of passive recovery in-between. SSG: 4 versus 4 players on a 25x35 meter pitch size with full-involvement play. Psychological responses before and after each training-session were assessed using the profile of mood-state (POMS: Tension, Depression, Anger, Vigor, Fatigue, and Confusion). The players' heart rate (HR) was continuously measured, whereas ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) and blood lactate concentration ([La]) were collected ~3-min after each training-session. HIIT and SSG showed no significant difference in HR, RPE and [La] responses. The HIIT compared with SSG resulted in: an increased total mood disturbance (P<0.001), tension (P<0.05), fatigue (P<0.01) and a decreased vigor (P<0.001). Both HIIT and SSG sessions induced similar physiological responses, in contrast, HIIT produced a mood disturbance while SSG ensured mood balance. Practitioners could choose between these two exercises according to the objective of their training, keeping in mind the mood-related advantages of the SSG shown in the present study.

Reduced leptin level is independent of fat mass changes and hunger scores from high-intensity intermittent plus strength training.

This study aimed to analyze the effects of high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT) plus strength training on body composition, hormone related to energy balance (leptin), and hunger scores in physically active non-obese men. Sixteen men were allocated in two different groups, training group (N.=10) performed a combined HIIT (5 km, 1 minute of effort interspersed by 1 minute of rest in passive recovery) followed by strength exercise session (three sets, with load of 8-12 repetition maximum) twice a week, during 8 weeks, while control group (N.=6) did not suffer any intervention. Hunger scores, leptin concentrations and body composition were assessed. Body composition, fasting leptin and hunger score were compared through two-way analysis (group and period) with repeated measures in the second factor while leptin and hunger scores in exercise session pre- and post-8 weeks through two-way analysis (period and time of measurement) with repeated measures in the second factor. The fasting leptin decreased pre- to post-8week in training group (7.7±4.9 to 2.9±2.1 ng/mL; P=0.012). For leptin response to exercise session there was main effect of training period, with higher values pre- (6.5±3.9 ng/mL) than post-training (2.6±2.1 ng/mL; P<0.001). For hunger scores there was effect of time of measurement (P<0.001), decreasing after breakfast and increasing over the experiment. Combined HIIT plus strength training were able to promote alterations in a hormone related to energy balance independent of body composition and hunger index alterations in physically active non-obese men.

Acute effects of high-intensity intermittent training on kinematics and foot strike patterns in endurance runners

ABSTRACTThe main purpose of this study was to evaluate running kinematic characteristics and foot strike patterns (FSP) during early and late stages of actual and common high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT): 5 × 2000 m with 120-s recovery between runs. Thirteen healthy, elite, highly trained male endurance runners participated in this study. They each had a personal record in the half-marathon of 70 ± 2.24 min, and each had a minimum experience of 4 years of training and competition. Heart rate (HR) and rate of perceived exertion (RPE) were monitored during HIIT. High levels of exhaustion were reached by the athletes during HIIT (HRpeak: 174.30 bpm; RPE: 17.23). There was a significant increase of HRpeak and RPE during HIIT; nevertheless, time for each run remained unchanged. A within-protocol paired t-test (first vs. last run) revealed no significant changes (P ≥ 0.05) in kinematics variables and FSP variables during HIIT. There were no substantial changes on kinematics and FSP characteristics in endurance runners after fatigue induced by a HIIT. Only the minimum ankle alignment showed a significant change. The author suggests that these results might be due to both the high athletic level of participants and their experience in HIIT.

High-Intensity Intermittent Training Positively Affects Aerobic and Anaerobic Performance in Judo Athletes Independently of Exercise Mode.

Purpose: The present study investigated the effects of high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT) on lower- and upper-body graded exercise and high-intensity intermittent exercise (HIIE, four Wingate bouts) performance, and on physiological and muscle damage markers responses in judo athletes.Methods: Thirty-five subjects were randomly allocated to a control group (n = 8) or to one of the following HIIT groups (n = 9 for each) and tested pre- and post-four weeks (2 training d·wk−1): (1) lower-body cycle-ergometer; (2) upper-body cycle-ergometer; (3) uchi-komi (judo technique entrance). All HIIT were constituted by two blocks of 10 sets of 20 s of all out effort interspersed by 10 s set intervals and 5-min between blocks.Results: For the upper-body group there was an increase in maximal aerobic power in graded upper-body exercise test (12.3%). The lower-body group increased power at onset blood lactate in graded upper-body exercise test (22.1%). The uchi-komi group increased peak power in upper- (16.7%) and lower-body (8.5%), while the lower-body group increased lower-body mean power (14.2%) during the HIIE. There was a decrease in the delta blood lactate for the uchi-komi training group and in the third and fourth bouts for the upper-body training group. Training induced testosterone-cortisol ratio increased in the lower-body HIIE for the lower-body (14.9%) and uchi-komi (61.4%) training groups.Conclusion: Thus, short-duration low-volume HIIT added to regular judo training was able to increase upper-body aerobic power, lower- and upper-body HIIE performance.

Effects of a high-intensity intermittent training program on aerobic capacity and lipid profile in trained subjects.

BackgroundData regarding the effect of training on plasma lipids are controversial. Most studies have addressed continuous or long intermittent training programs. The present study evaluated the effect of short-short high-intensity intermittent training (HIIT) on aerobic capacity and plasma lipids in soccer players.MethodsThe study included 24 male subjects aged 21–26 years, divided into three groups: experimental group 1 (EG1, n=8) comprising soccer players who exercised in addition to regular short-short HIIT twice a week for 12 weeks; experimental group 2 (EG2, n=8) comprising soccer players who exercised in a regular football training program; and a control group (CG, n=8) comprising untrained subjects who did not practice regular physical activity. Maximal aerobic velocity and maximal oxygen uptake along with plasma lipids were measured before and after 6 weeks and 12 weeks of the respective training program.ResultsCompared with basal values, maximal oxygen uptake had significantly increased in EG1 (from 53.3±4.0 mL/min/kg to 54.8±3.0 mL/min/kg at 6 weeks [P<0.05] and to 57.0±3.2 mL/min/kg at 12 weeks [P<0.001]). Maximal oxygen uptake was increased only after 12 weeks in EG2 (from 52.8±2.7 mL/min/kg to 54.2±2.6 mL/min/kg, [P<0.05]), but remain unchanged in CG. After 12 weeks of training, maximal oxygen uptake was significantly higher in EG1 than in EG2 (P<0.05). During training, no significant changes in plasma lipids occurred. However, after 12 weeks, total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels had decreased (by about 2%) in EG1 but increased in CG. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels increased in EG1 and EG2, but decreased in CG. Plasma triglycerides decreased by 8% in EG1 and increased by about 4% in CG.ConclusionTwelve weeks of short-short HIIT improves aerobic capacity. Although changes in the lipid profile were not significant after this training program, they may have a beneficial impact on health.

Effects of High-intensity Intermittent Training and Moderate-intensity Training on Cardiopulmonary Capacity in Canoe and Kayak Paddlers during 8 Weeks

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of high intensity intermittent training on cardiopulmonary capacity in canoe and kayak paddlers. METHODS: A total of 16 canoe and kayak paddlers were participated in this study. Experimental group(n=8) was performed high-intensity intermittent training and control group(n=8) was moderate intensity training. All subjects performed a treadmill test in order to compare the difference before and after the intervention. Finishing the test, all subjects were measured to their heart rate(HR), forced vital capacity(FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and forced expiratory ratio(FEV1/FVC). Recovery of heart rate(RHR) was calculated using the HR. HR and pulmonary flow values was measured before and during the intervention period per 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks. To compare the differences over time between experimental group and the control group, used(time<TEX>${\times}$</TEX>group) two-way repeated measures ANOVA. One-way repeated ANOVA was performed to determine where differences over time within-group. RESULTS: One-way repeated ANOVA revealed a significant difference in the experimental and control group. In experimental group, %RHR3min and FEV1 were significantly increased after 4 weeks(p<.05). Also, %RHR1min, FVC and FEV1/FVC were significantly increased after 6 weeks(p<.05). In control group, %RHR1min, %RHR3min, FVC, FEV1 and FEV1/FVC were significantly increased after 6 weeks(p<.05). CONCLUSION: Not only moderate training but also high-intensity intermittent training contributes to cardiopulmonary capacity in canoe and kayak paddlers. Although high-intensity intermittent training is very short time, the training has high degree of efficiency. Therefore, developed this training in the future, it will be better to improve the cardiopulmonary capacity for athletes and healthy people.
