Long grain samples of rice gave significantly lower yields of head rice than did either the short or medium grain samples. The hardness of rice kernels was found to correlate with the area‐volume ratio (r =+0.39). This gives rise to the possibility of strain distribution over the cross‐sectional area as being important to obtaining higher yields. The head rice yield was found to be positively (r =+0.22) correlated to hardness.
