Effectiveness of acupuncture therapy on improvement of nasolabial folds and marionette lines: A retrospective study.

The preference of beauty seekers for noninvasive, convenient, and long-lasting effective facial cosmetic techniques with minimal downtime and recovery time is obvious nowadays. As a part of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture has great advantages in solving these problems. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of two distinct acupuncture techniques for facial rejuvenation in treating nasolabial folds (NFs) and marionette lines (MLs). One hundred beauty seekers who have received facial acupuncture cosmetic treatment in hospitals between June 1, 2020, and December 31, 2022, were selected randomly and inquired. Among them, 50 beauty seekers (Group Ⅰ) have received a normal facial traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture therapy, by inserting the needles perpendicularly into the acupoints. Meanwhile, another 50 beauty seekers (Group Ⅱ) were treated by needle knives, which were inserted parallelly under the dermis and basically along the meridians of Chinese medicine linked by the acupoints. The records of pain evaluation and adverse events on cases, subjective satisfactions, and objective evaluations of efficacy were summarized and statistically analyzed. The efficacy of Group Ⅱ is better than Group Ⅰ. The dermatologists'assessments for NFand ML show significant differences between Groups Ⅰ and Ⅱ after one course. The mean value of subjective satisfaction also obeys the rules above. Although Group Ⅱ exhibited the highest value of mean pain intensity, the adverse events were basically mild. Furthermore, Group Ⅱ showed higher willingness for additional treatments. Only in terms of the wrinkle depth of NF and ML, the method of acupuncturing parallelly under the dermis by needle knife is safe and more successful.

Analysis of Clinical Characteristics of Insomnia Patients and Effect of Acupuncture Therapy

Objective: To explore the clinical characteristics of insomnia patients and the function and mechanism of acupuncture therapy, to improve the recognition and diagnosis of insomnia. Methods: The clinical data of 60 patients with insomnia who met the criteria and were admitted to the Department of Acupuncture and moxibustion in Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine from January 2023 to February 2024 were selected, the clinical characteristics of the patients were analyzed, and the patients were randomly divided into two groups for routine treatment and acupuncture treatment, respectively, to explore the therapeutic effect and possible mechanism. Results: The insomnia symptoms of the patients were mainly difficulty in falling asleep. Acupuncture treatment could significantly improve the insomnia symptoms and promote the expression levels of DA and NE. Conclusion: Patients with insomnia have various clinical features, mainly sleep difficulties. Acupuncture treatment can significantly relieve insomnia symptoms by up-regulating DA and NE levels, and then improve sleep quality.

The Effect of Acupuncture Therapy at ST 40 (Fenglong), SP 6 (Sanyinjiao) and Avocado Juice on Reducing Total Cholesterol Levels in High Cholesterol Cases in Duwetan Ngunut Jumantono

<p><strong>Introduction: </strong>Hypercholesterolemia is a condition where the cholesterol levels in the blood exceed normal levels. One of the non-pharmacological therapeutic treatments for patients with hypercholesterolemia is acupuncture therapy and providing nutritious food intake. This study aims to determine the effect of acupuncture points at ST 40 (Fenglong), SP 6 (Sanyinjiao) and avocado juice on reducing total cholesterol levels in cases of high cholesterol in Duwetan Ngunut Jumantono</p><p><strong>Methods: </strong>Design of this research<em>Quasy experimental </em>with the two groups pretest-posttest design method. January - August 2023 in Duwetan Ngunut village, Jumantono, Karang Anyar. The sampling technique was Purposive Random Sampling of 38 research subjects. Data collection uses primary data, namely the results of measuring total cholesterol levels. Research analysis consisted of univariate analysis, bivariate analysis with Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests.</p><p><strong>Results:</strong>There was an effect of acupuncture therapy at points ST 40 (Fenglong), SP 6 (Sanyinjiao) (p=0.0018) and a combination of avocado juice (p=0.0001) on reducing total cholesterol levels. There was a difference in the reduction in total cholesterol levels after being given the intervention (p=0.007) in the acupuncture therapy group (Mean= 219.79; SD= 39.35) and the avocado juice combination acupuncture group (Mean= 181.63 SD= 36.63).</p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong>There was a decrease in total cholesterol levels after being given acupuncture therapy at points ST 40 (Fenglong), SP 6 (Sanyinjiao) and a combination of avocado juice in the Duwetan Ngunut Jumantono village community.</p>

Different Acupuncture Therapies for Postherpetic Neuralgia: An Overview of Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis.

Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common complication of herpes zoster infection and affects patients' quality of life. Acupuncture therapy is regarded as a competitive method of treatment for analgesia. To summarize evidence from systematic reviews (SRs) and evaluate the effectiveness and safety of different acupuncture therapies for treating PHN. Eight electronic databases were searched from their inception to August 5, 2022, including 4 international electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science) and 4 Chinese databases (Chinese Biomedical Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP Database and Wanfang Database). Methodological quality was assessed by A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR 2). The Risk of Bias in Systematic Review (ROBIS) tool was used to assess the risk of bias in SRs. Evidence level was assessed by the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Totally, 7 SRs were included, including 128 studies and 9,792 patients. In AMSTAR 2, most of the SRs were of low or critically low levels since they had more than 1 critical deficiency. In ROBIS, 1 SR (14.29%) was rated as high risk, and the other 6 (85.71%) were rated as low risk. In the GRADE system, 9 outcomes (28.13%) were valued as high level, 5 (15.63%) as moderate level, 1 (3.13%) as low, and 17 (53.13%) as very low. In the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy, the group "moxibustion vs. original medical treatment" [mean difference (MD)=-1.44, 95% confidence interval (CI): -1.80 to -1.08, I2=99%, P<0.00001] was of the highest heterogeneity and the group "bloodletting vs. original medical treatment" (MD=-2.80, 95% CI: -3.14 to -2.46, I2=0, P<0.00001) was of the lowest heterogeneity. Six SRs have reported the safety of their studies and no serious events were shown in the treatment and control groups. Acupuncture therapy seems to be effective in treating PHN. Despite the evidence that suggested the advantages of acupuncture therapy in relieving pain and promoting efficacy and safety, the methodological quality was quite low. Further studies should pay more attention to the quality of original studies and evidence for SRs to confirm these findings. (PROSPERO registration No. CRD42022344790).

Effects of Acupuncture Therapy at the Mingmen (GV4) and Zusanli (ST36) Points on the Expression of Transforming Growth Factor Beta 1 in Mice with Lupus Nephritis Model

Introduction: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune inflammation involving various factors and autoantibodies targeting cell components, resulting in epigenetic changes. Lupus nephritis is one of the clinical manifestations of SLE. Nowadays, it is known that acupuncture could inhibit disease development, including chronic nephritis, chronic diarrhea, lumbago adnexitis, impotence, enuresis in children, myelitis, and endometritis. Thus, this study aimed to examine the effect of improving Mingmen (GV4) and Zusanli (ST36) point acupuncture therapy on the expression of Transforming Growth Factor Beta 1 (TGFβ1) in lupus nephritis model mice. Method: It was a laboratory experiment on mice (Mus musculus) lupus nephritis model with a post-test only with a control group design. The research samples were divided into four groups, with seven mice in each group, consisting of a control group (KN), a negative control group given pristane (K), treatment group 1 (P1); given pristane and methylprednisolone, and a treatment group 2 (P2); given pristane and acupuncture at the Mingmen (GV4) and Zusanli (ST36) points. This acupuncture needle insertion was carried out thrice a week for 12 insertions during the intervention. The bivariate analysis was done using Kruskal Wallis. Results: There were 28 samples examined in this study. we found that the TGFβ1 expression was high in group P2 (72.86±11.13), after that followed by group P1 (65.71±25.73), N (60.71±25.24), and K (5.88±5.35). According to the bivariate analysis, it showed a significant difference in TGF-β (p= 0.010). Conclusion: Mingmen (GV4) and Zusanli (ST36) point acupuncture therapy improves TGFβ1 expression. Acupuncture therapy triggers inhibition of TGF-β1 expression in lupus nephritis model mice.

Effect of acupuncture therapy on vaccine-induced immune response in d-galactose-induced aging rats

ObjectiveThis study aimed to explore whether acupuncture and moxibustion can enhance the immune response by increasing the expression of the endogenous adjuvant HSP70 mRNA. MethodForty Wistar rats were divided into four groups: model immune acupuncture group (A), model immune control group (B), normal immune acupuncture group (C), and normal immune control group (D). Model immune groups A and B were induced by injecting d-galactose for 6 weeks. Rats in groups A and C were then treated with low-frequency electroacupuncture (EA) at Zusanli (ST36), Guanyuan (CV4), and Baihui (GV20) and moxibustion for 3 weeks. Subsequently, all rats were observed for 2 more weeks. At the 12th week, diphtheria antitoxin titers were determined using the Vero cell trace neutralization method, CD4+T/CD8+T cell ratios in peripheral blood were examined by flow cytometry, and the relative expression of spleen cell HSP70 mRNA was measured by RT-PCR. ResultsCompared with the normal immune control, the diphtheria antitoxin titer, CD4+T/CD8+T cell ratio, and expression of spleen cell HSP70 mRNA significantly decreased in the model immune control group (P < 0.01). However, the model immune acupuncture group showed a significant increase in antitoxin titer (P < 0.01) and elevated CD4+T/CD8+T cell ratio and HSP70 mRNA expression (P < 0.05) after EA and moxibustion intervention. ConclusionAcupuncture and moxibustion may enhance the humoral immune response (diphtheria antitoxin titer) and cellular immune response (peripheral blood CD4+T/CD8+T cell ratio) by increasing the expression of the endogenous adjuvant HSP70 mRNA, suggesting that acupuncture may serve as a new vaccine adjuvant.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to see the effect of acupuncture therapy on reducing menstrual pain. Method: The research method used in the treatment of menstrual pain through acupuncture therapy is a qualitative research method with an interview and observation approach. In the process of this research, an observational approach was carried out because there were several respondents who experienced menstrual pain. Result and Discussion: Based on the results of the study, acupuncture therapy was carried out nine times with a quantity of three times a week, 5-7 days before the menstrual period, for three menstrual cycles, and the menstrual pain experienced by the client experienced a significant change. Conclusion: This is marked by a change in the pain scale from 7 to 1. In addition, the volume of menstruation also decreases, the color of the blood is lighter and not darker than before, and there are no clots.

Research progress of mechanisms of acupuncture in treating slow transit constipation

As an important part of the traditional Chinese medicine treatment system, acupuncture therapy has been used in the treatment of slow transit constipation (STC) for a long time and has achieved good clinical effects. This article reviews research on the effects of acupuncture therapy on STC published in recent years, focusing on the mechanism of acupuncture on the enteric nervous system, neurotransmitters, interstitial cells of Cajal, smooth muscle cells, gastrointestinal motility, psychological factors and intestinal microecology of STC, in order to provide reference for the clinical application and mechanism research of acupuncture in the treatment of STC in the future.

The effects of acupuncture therapy in migraine: An activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Previous functional magnetic resonance imaging studies indicated that acupuncture could activate the brain regions in patients with migraine. However, these studies showed inconsistent results. This activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis aimed to investigate the consistent activated change of brain regions between pre- and post-acupuncture treatment in migraineurs. We conducted a literature search in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database, the Wanfang Database, and the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database from their inception to 18 August, 2022, to obtain articles assessing the functional magnetic resonance imaging changes of acupuncture for migraine. Two investigators independently performed literature selection, data extraction, and quality assessment. The methodological quality was assessed with a modified version of the checklist. The reporting quality of interventions among included studies was evaluated by the Revised Standards for Reporting Interventions in Clinical Trials of Acupuncture (STRICTA). Our meta-analysis was conducted according to the GingerALE software. The Jackknife sensitivity analysis was used to assess the robustness of the results. 14 articles were finally included according to the eligible criteria. Regarding the immediate effect of acupuncture on migraine, the ALE meta-analysis demonstrated that the deactivation regions were mainly located in the superior frontal gyrus, and middle frontal gyrus (uncorrected P < 0.001). The ALE meta-analysis of the cumulative effect showed that the activation regions were the thalamus, superior frontal gyrus, posterior lobe of the cerebellum, insula, middle frontal gyrus, precentral gyrus, anterior cingulate, and the deactivation brain regions were located in the transverse temporal gyrus, postcentral gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, anterior cingulate, parahippocampal gyrus, inferior parietal lobule, and inferior occipital gyrus (uncorrected P < 0.001). Acupuncture could activate multiple brain areas related with the regulation of pain conduction, processing, emotion, cognition, and other brain regions in patients with migraine. In the future, the combination of multiple imaging technologies could be a new approach to deeply investigate the central mechanism of acupuncture for migraine.

Acupuncture Therapy: An Effective Intervention for Acute Low Back Pain

Acute low back pain is a relatively common case in the emergency department, and the currently used therapeutic measures can hardly meet the need for immediate relief of patients’ low back pain and functional impairment. This study examines the scientific validity and feasibility of acupuncture intervention in the emergency department for this condition and attempts to provide new treatment ideas that can enrich the treatment of acute low back pain. The text demonstrates the scientificity of acupuncture intervention in acute low back pain from three aspects, including the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy in treating the disease and clinical experimental studies and basic research; it also shows the specific acupuncture points and operation steps required for acupuncture therapy in the form of diagrams, which makes acupuncture therapy operable in clinical use. The use of acupuncture therapy should be attempted in future emergency clinical practice with the aim of promoting its use in the treatment of acute conditions.

Effect of acupuncture therapy combined with fluticasone propionate in the treatment of persistent allergic rhinitis: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

BackgroundAllergic rhinitis (AR) is an immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated inflammatory response.Persistent allergic rhinitis (PAR) is a subtype of AR, but the treatment of PAR is still a problem. Acupuncture is used as an alternative therapy for AR in clinical practice. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy combined with fluticasone propionate nasal spray in comparison to fluticasone propionate nasal spray alone in the relief of symptoms for PAR.MethodsThis study is a multicenter, single-blind, randomized controlled trial. A total of 260 eligible patients will be randomly assigned into the treatment group or the control group. The treatment group will receive the nasal fluticasone propionate combined with acupuncture, and the control group will receive fluticasone propionate nasal spray alone for 6 weeks. The primary outcome is the change in the Reflective Total Nasal Symptom Score (rTNSS) from baseline to the end of treatment, and the Total Non Nasal Symptom Score (TNNSS), reflective total ocular symptom score (rTOSS), Rhinitis Quality of Life Questionnaire (RQLQ), use of antiallergic drugs, and the Rhinitis Control Assessment Test (RCAT) are used as secondary outcomes. The participants will be followed up for another 24 weeks after treatment.DiscussionThis clinical trial will be able to provide high level evidence on the acupuncture therapy combined with fluticasone propionate nasal spray in the treatment of PAR.Trial registrationISRCTN Registry, ID: ISRCTN44040506. The Effect of Acupuncture Therapy on the Rehabilitation of Motorcycle Athletes' Knee Joint Injury

To explore the rehabilitation effect of acupuncture on motorcycle athletes’ knee injuries. Firstly, 60 city association motorcycle athletes with knee joint injuries were selected, and the control group and the experimental group were tested and compared by random grouping. The control group received a series of planned rehabilitation training followed by traditional Chinese massage to relax. The experimental group used acupuncture therapy plan for rehabilitation after rehabilitation training. After the control group and the experimental group have completed the test, the data is measured to compare the knee joint function score (Lyholm) grade differences and pain scores at several different time nodes and observe and analyze them. The Lysholm score and pain score of the control group at different time nodes are both Lower than the experimental group, the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). Data experiments prove that acupuncture therapy is more effective for knee joint injury rehabilitation, and is better than general traditional Chinese massage therapy. For motorcycle athletes’ knee joint injury rehabilitation, acupuncture therapy combined with rehabilitation training can significantly reduce athlete’s knee joint pain, reduce the number of athletes’ injuries, speed up knee joint injury recovery, increase joint mobility, and improve rehabilitation efficacy.

Acupuncture and cupping alternative therapy in patients with acute low back pain

Introduction: acupuncture and cupping constitute an alternative therapy to alleviate different conditions, especially acute low back pain, which improves the level of satisfaction and impacts on the quality of life of patients who suffer from it. Objective: to evaluate the efficacy of treatment with acupuncture and cupping in patients with acute low back pain. Methods: a randomized phase III therapeutic clinical trial was carried out in patients who attended the Natural and Traditional Medicine service of the rehabilitation room of the Juan Manuel Páez Inchauthi Polyclinic, in the municipality of Moa, Holguín province, Cuba, in the period of July to December of the year 2017. The study universe consisted of 80 patients who attended the consultation; The sample was randomly selected and consisted of 60 patients in two study groups, group I, who received acupuncture treatment, and group II, with cupping, made up of 30 patients each. Both were diagnosed with post Bi syndrome. Results: men predominated in the study, with 63.3%, and study group II, with 66.7%. The age group from 40 to 49 years was the most affected. In both, the exogenous wind factor predominated. It was observed that the Bi wind syndrome is the most benefited with acupuncture therapy, as when the suction cup was applied. Conclusion: in both groups there was 100% effectiveness of acupuncture therapy and the cupping, in the improvement or cure of acute low back pain.

The Effectiveness of Acupuncture Therapy in Patient with Hemorrhoid: A Case Report

Background: Hemorrhoid is an anorectal disease due to mechanical disturbances in the anal cushion and hemorrhoid venous plexus blood flow obstruction. Symptoms that often accur are bleeding, pain, prolapse, itching, and mucus discharge. Acupuncture is non-pharmacological therapeutic modalities that has been shown to improve hemorrhoid symptoms.&#x0D; Case: A 37-year-old woman complained of hemorroid lump with pain since last 1 year. Physical examination showed a reddish hemorrhoid prolapse, about 1.5 cm in the posterior anal without bleeding. The pain score with NRS is 4. Acupuncture therapy was performed 3 times a week at acupoints GV20, TE6, LU6, ST25, BL34, ST36, EX-UE2 and BL57. Then given continuous wave electrical stimulation, 4 Hz, 30 minutes retention. After 11 treatments, pain disappeared with NRS 0 and lump was reduced to about 0.5 cm.&#x0D; Conclusion: Acupuncture can improve the symptoms of hemorrhoids, which are seen by the relief of pain and the reduction of lumps.&#x0D; &#x0D; Keywords: Acupuncture, hemorrhoid, hemorrhoid pain, hemorrhoid prolapse

Due to the growing incidence of such ophthalmic pathology as glaucoma, it is necessary to search for new methods of treatment of this disease. One of the non-drug methods of treating glaucoma is reflexology. This type of treatment can be an definitive and cost-effective method used to improve the overall condition. Our review of scientific papers shows that the results of acupuncture therapy in glaucoma patients are ambiguous and contradictory. Therefore, a more detailed study of the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy in glaucoma patients is necessary. Key word: acupuncture, glaucoma, paraorbital points, intraocular pressure.

Effectiveness of Acupuncture Therapy on Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting After Gynecologic Surgery: A Meta-Analysis and Systematic Review

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture therapy (AT) on postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) after gynecologic surgery (GS). A meta-analysis using a systematic search strategy was performed. A comprehensive literature search of all published randomized controlled trials or prospective cohort studies assessing the effectiveness of AT on PONV in patients undergoing GS was conducted in three databases: PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library. The incidence of PONV, the use of rescue antiemetics, and side effects of AT were analyzed using the Review Manager 5.3 software. Nine randomized controlled trials and one prospective cohort study identified in the literature search from database inception (1966) to December 31, 2019, including 1,075 participants were included in the present study. AT significantly reduced the risk of developing postoperative nausea and postoperative vomiting by 48% (relative risk=0.52; 95% confidence interval, 0.44 to 0.61; P<.00001) and 42% (relative risk=0.58; 95% confidence interval, 0.49 to 0.68; P<.00001), respectively. No significant differences in the incidence of side effects such as bleeding and needle pain were observed between groups (P=.54). AT was also associated with a lower rate of rescue antiemetic usage (P<.00001) and a higher degree of satisfaction with postoperative recovery (P<.0001). Moreover, the optimal therapeutic effect of AT on preventing PONV was achieved when the treatment time was controlled within 30minutes and transcutaneous acupoint electrical stimulation was applied. AT is an effective and safe physical therapy for the prophylaxis of PONV in patients undergoing GS.

Effect of Acupuncture on Timeliness of Male Shoulder Joint Endurance.

Acupuncture as a traditional and commonly used treatment has been used to improve the performance of athletes. In the improvement of female shoulder joint explosive force and muscle endurance also has an immediate effect. However, whether the effect of acupuncture therapy can be maintained after improving athletic performance still worth further discussion. The purpose of this study was to explore the timeless of the physical neurophysiological response induced by acupuncture at specific acupoints in improving endurance performance. Seventeen healthy male participants completed six groups of shoulder joint isokinetic exercises. The isokinetic exercise completed in the first group was taken as the baseline. After acupuncture for 15 min, the following 5 isokinetic experiments were completed. Acupuncture acupoints included Binao (LI14), Jianliao (SJ14), Naohui (SJ13), Zhongfu (LU1), Xiabai (LU4), Tianfu (LU3) and Xiaoluo (SJ12). The results show that acupuncture can improve physical performance for 10–20 min. After acupuncture, the maximum torque, average power, average work and total work values significantly increased (p < 0.05). Stimulation of acupoints can effectively improve the performance of periarticular muscle endurance around the shoulder, but this improvement is limited by time.

Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials of Acupuncture versus Western Medicine in the Treatment of Insomnia

To evaluate the clinical effect and effectiveness of acupuncture therapy in the treatment of insomnia patients, so as to provide better evidence based services, benefit patients and promote it in clinical practice. Chinese databases were searched: China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Scientific Journals Full text Database, Wanfang data knowledge service platform; English databases were searched: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase. Stata 15.1 and RevMan 5.4.1 software were used for statistical analysis. A total of 22 randomized controlled trials (1572 cases) were included, including 780 in the experimental group and 792 in the control group. An analysis showed that the effective rate of acupuncture treatment for insomnia was better than that of Western medicine treatment and the combined effect odds ratio=1.23, 95 % confidence interval [1.17, 1.29]. Pure acupuncture group in Pittsburgh sleep quality experienced surpasses the Western medicine group evaluation combined effect of weighted mean difference=2.04, 95 % confidence interval [1.62, 2.46], p<0.01; In each score of Pittsburgh sleep quality index, sleep quality weighted mean difference=-0.27, 95 % confidence interval [-0.40, -0.13], p<0.01, time to fall asleep weighted mean difference=-0.21, 95 % confidence interval [-0.37, -0.06], p<0.01, sleep efficiency weighted mean difference=-0.30, 95 % confidence interval [-0.42, -0.19], p<0.01, sleep disorder weighted mean difference=-0.22, 95 % confidence interval [-0.41, -0.04], p<0.01, hypnotic drugs weighted mean difference=-0.79, 95 % confidence interval [-1.01, -0.57], p<0.01, daytime function weighted mean difference=-0.39, 95 % CI [-0.59, -0.19], p<0.01. All of the acupuncture groups were better than the Western medicine groups. In the sleep time weighted mean difference=-0.30, 95 % confidence interval [-0.05, 0.18], p=0.73, there was no statistical significance between the acupuncture group and the Western medicine group. Pure acupuncture has more advantages than Western medicine in the treatment of insomnia and it is suitable for clinical promotion.
