Convinced that his father's work was arranged around an underlying structure, Robert Lutyens, in 1944, posed the challenge that ‘…someone will someday discover my father's system of applied geometry’. Drawing on an analysis of the ground floor plans of 40 English country houses designed by Edwin Lutyens between 1889 and 1913, this paper considers Robert Lutyens's ‘Armature of Planes’, a theory which he closely associated with the development of his father's work. The analysis reveals Edwin Lutyens's consistent use of ratios to structure his work.

This paper is an attempt to re-evaluate the architecture of Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) through the analysis of his house planning. Lutyens, one of the leading architects in Edwardian England, has been almost neglected in the history of modern architecture because of his conversion from the Arts and Crafts vernacular style to Neo-Georgian style at the turn of the century. He, however, excelled in house planning, especially skillful manipulation of axes in its plan. From this viewpoint, three small houses with the central staircase are analysed here: 1) Tiebourne Court, Witley, Surrey, 1899-1901 2) Homewood, Knebworth, Hertfordshire, 1901 3) The Salutation, Sandwich, Kent, 1911 As Lutyens' stilistic interst shifted from the vernacular to the classical, his house plan changed from the informal and additive to the formal and divisional. The functional relationship between the major living rooms and the rather complicated circulation around the central staircase, however, hardly changed. It indicates that the apparently divisional plan of the later house was developed through compressing the additive plan of the earlier house into the more rigid geometrical framework.

A bibliography of Irish architectural history

What follows is a list — covering items published between 1900 and 1986 — of serious accounts of the history of important architectural projects undertaken in Ireland between the late seventeenth and early twentieth centuries. It is intended to be comprehensive in respect of monographs, collective works and articles in non-Irish periodicals, but in respect of Irish periodicals it is a supplement to Richard J. Hayes, Sources for the history of Irish civilisation: articles in Irish periodicals (9 vols, Boston, 1970). None of the above definitions is rigidly adhered to: much is included which falls outside their limits, but an attempt has been made to include everything that falls within them. The following have not been comprehensively included: (1) Monographs on non-resident architects whose careers, notwithstanding Irish commissions, were mainly abroad, e.g. Robert Adam, G.E. Street, Edwin Lutyens. This is partly because such architects are so numerous (there is evidence of over a hundred British architects having professional contacts with Ireland between 1750 and 1850) and partly because they are already well served bibliographically, e.g. by Howard Colvin, A biographical dictionary of British architects, 1600–1840 (London, 1978); (2) studies of the foreign careers of Irish architects, e.g. James Hoban, Eileen Gray; (3) studies of vernacular architecture (but see entry under this heading in the index); (4) contemporary reviews or criticism of buildings; (5) reviews of books; (6) printed primary sources, such as J.T. Gilbert, Calendar of ancient records of Dublin… (19 vols, Dublin, 1889–1944).

Christopher Hussey: a bibliographical tribute

Christopher Hussey CBE MA FSA HONARIBA, who died on 20 March 1970, was the doyen of English architectural historians. By any standards, he was an extraordinarily prolific writer. The high points of his literary career were undoubtedly The Picturesque (1927) - a brilliant ‘essay on a way of seeing’ which opened the eyes of a whole generation; English Country Houses: Early, Mid and Late Georgian (3 vols, 1955-58) - the product of forty years’ research; and The Life of Sir Edwin Lutyens (1950) - a biographical classic written with all the wit and sympathy which its subject deserved. But it was week by week in the pages of Country Life that Hussey built up his reputation. Landscapes, country houses, town houses; medieval cottages, Georgian seats and Victorian public buildings, as well as the new-built classics of the Modern Movement, Hussey described them all. His range was remarkable, and his expository power unfailing. More than anyone it was Hussey who made Country Life, in Lord Runciman's words, ‘the keeper of the architectural conscience of the nation'. Of course he travelled a royal road: Scotney Castle, Eton and Christ Church. But he put these inherited advantages to excellent use, delighting in the appreciation of architecture by a wider and wider audience. His whole life was really a triumphant vindication of the English amateur tradition. During his lifetime architectural history was transformed from a species of belles lettres into a serious academic discipline. Almost accidentally, Hussey played a crucial part in this process. Rather more consciously, he helped to turn preservation from a minority cult into a major national concern.(J.M.C., RIBA Jnl., June 1970)

Robert George Spencer Hudson, 1895-1965

Robert George Spencer Hudson was Professor of Geology and Mineralogy at Trinity College, Dublin, a former Professor of Geology at the University of Leeds and for nearly thirteen years (1946-1958) geologist and palaeontologist with the Iraq Petroleum Company. He was born on 17 November 1895 and died suddenly on 29 December 1965. He was distinguished for his major studies in Carboniferous palaeontology, stratigraphy and sedimentation in Yorkshire and elsewhere in the north of England; also for his contributions to the understanding of the palaeontology and geology of the Middle East, especially the Mesozoic Stromatoporoids found there. Rather above middle height he was sturdily built and of rugged appearance. He spoke slowly as if evaluating every thought before delivering it; yet conversely on occasions one was surprised by a thoughtless and untimely remark. Nevertheless, he will be remembered for his enthusiasm, courage and kindly nature, especially by many of those who worked with him. Hudson was born at Rugby, the eldest son of Robert Spencer Hudson, a member of a Rugby firm of builders, Parnell and Sons, which built several buildings designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. A skilled worker in wood, he took charge under Lutyens of the building of Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House. He was prominent in the municipal life of Rugby, serving for many years on its Urban District Council; he became in turn, Alderman, then Mayor and was subsequently elected the first Freeman of Rugby. R. G. S. Hudson’s mother was Annie Wilhelmina, née Goble, of Bicester, Oxfordshire; he had three brothers and two sisters. His schooling began at St. Matthews, a Church of England school in Rugby, under a good headmaster.

The British Institute of Archæology, Ankara : Mr. Seton Lloyd

MR. SETON LLOYD, who (as announced in Nature of August 14, p. 250) has been elected to the directorship of the recently founded British Institute of Archæology in Ankara, started his career as architectural assistant to Sir Edwin Lutyens, and gained his early archæological experience in Egypt during the late ‘twenties. During 1930–37 he worked under Dr. Henri Frankfort, as field supervisor to the Iraq Expedition of the Chicago Oriental Institute, and there gained an exceptionally detailed knowledge of mound-excavation on a wide variety of Mesopotamian sites. During this period he had the satisfaction of recovering many now famous art treasures from the rich Sumerian temples of Tell Asmar and Tell Ajrab. Next came two seasons with the Neilson Expedition under Prof. J. Garstang at Mersin in Turkey, where a stratified excavation of extreme complexity gave full scope to his particular talent. Since 1939, as technical adviser to the Directorate of Antiquities in the Government of Iraq, he has been indirectly responsible for a succession of astonishingly successful excavations, which have not only preserved the continuity of archæological discovery, but also raised his Department from a mere administrative service to a unique position as a research institution. Indeed, it would be difficult to over-estimate the debt which Mesopotamian archæology already owes to Mr. Lloyd‘s technique and the new generation of Iraqi excavators to his guidance. His name is now coupled with those of Mallowan and Woolley as one of the most gifted and successful excavators of our age. On him devolves the task of training those of the coming generation, and it could not be in better hands. His publications show him to be a good all-round archæologist and good artist, with a scholarly as well as a scientific outlook. The new Institute thus makes an auspicious start.

Reflection from Glazed Pictures

IN directing attention to the question of avoiding reflection from glazed pictures, Mr. Robert Howden has rendered a useful service both to artists and the public. His paper, read before the Royal Society of Arts on Oct. 3, clearly stated the elements and difficulties of the problem, and it is significant that Sir Edwin Lutyens was in the chair. Mr. Howden recommends replacing the usual flat glass by a sheet bent into a parabola. The adaptation of this device to shop fronts has recently been developed by Mr. G. Brown, and the effectiveness of such a scheme may be seen by viewing the interior of a motor show-room at 88 Regent Street, London, through the curved plate glass windows. No reflection of the street can be seen and only the contents of the showroom is visible from without, so that the window itself does not seem to exist. If this could be applied to pictures in public galleries, it would indeed be a boon. But there is the question of cost and the ever-haunting thought that perhaps some other and simpler solution of the problem may not be out of reach. In order to be effective, pictures hung high up would require a different curvature of glass from those on a level with the eye, and then all the varieties of sizes and shapes of canvases or panels would offer further difficulties. Would it not be as well to try first the simple device of tilting the pictures a little forward ? Why is that not done in the public galleries ? We think this would at least be an improvement on existing conditions and, if sufficiently successful under the usual system of lighting, the walls of new galleries could be built so as to lean a little inwards. It might be worth while to construct a light wooden framing that would cover one of the smaller walls of the National Gallery, to hang upon it pictures with dark backgrounds and then to tilt the screen forwards and note the improvement in visibility under the conditions of top lighting in use there.
