The Principal's Strategy in Developing Excellence Classes at Muhammadiyah Junior High School 7 Surakarta

<em>Muhammadiyah Junior High School 7 Surakarta is a private school based on the Islamic Center with an accredited A grade as an Adiwiyata Comfort and Cultural School. The school also offers distinguished programs aimed at achieving excellence, producing Islamic graduates with global perspectives and environmental awareness. Muhammadiyah Junior High School 7 manages 2 exclusive programs: the global class program and the regular program. These distinguished classes have been running for approximately 10 years. Researchers conducted a study on the principal's strategies in developing these excellence classes at Muhammadiyah Junior High School 7 Surakarta. This study aims to identify and describe the principal's strategies in developing these classes. The research utilized a qualitative approach through field research, with the principal as the primary informant. Data collection methods included interviews, observations, and documentation, analyzed descriptively. The findings indicate that the principal employs strategies such as student management focusing on both input and output, daily teacher evaluations to assess teaching activities, mentorship, and motivation, and implementing additional programs including memorization (tahfidz), English language, educational trips, robotics, and coding classes</em>.

Educational tourism in the context of global challenges

The article is devoted to educational tourism which currently acts as one of the promising technologies of modern education, demonstrating a steady demand for it despite the aggravated geopolitical and socio-economic situations, and that explains the relevance of this issue. An important goal of educational tourism is formation of a comprehensively developed personality capable of vigorous activity in a multiethnic and multicultural environment. On the basis of characteristic features of educational tourism described in this article, a definition is formulated in which the integrative nature of the studied type of tourism is identified. In addition, the main directions of educational tours are given that allow to get the most complete picture of this social phenomenon alongside with the advantages of educational trips for both the host country and the student. The paper considers the Russian export of educational services, which makes it possible to increase the stability of the local economy. Some relevant initiatives contributing to the development of educational tourism in Russia have also been studied. The arguments justifying the need for its immediate development are presented as well as the tasks that require priority solutions for this. It is concluded that tourism and education are the key drivers for the development of the modern economy.

Learning and creativity. Looking for opportunities throughout life

Lifelong Learning (ALTV hereinafter) is an approach that recognizes people's potential to learn from birth to death. To do this, they use different opportunities that are configured in different educational, formal, non-formal and informal contexts present in cities. This article discusses theoretical perspectives, considering dimensions and contexts of the ALTV, as well as a set of proposals that are understood as "learning opportunities" from a creative educational perspective. Current studies on educational experiences that promote ALTV are analyzed and conditions that are conducive to learning and creativity at different moments of life are discussed. Among the proposals, museum experiences, educational trips, science fairs, scientific theater, and community learning stand out. ALTV is recognized at the intersection of social and personal components.

Are Transit-Oriented Development and Travel Characteristics Influencing Residential Dissonance? Analysis From a Developing Country’s Perspective

The success of transit-oriented development (TOD) could hinge on reduced residential dissonance among the people living in TOD neighborhoods. Understanding the factors that could be associated with residential dissonance would be crucial in different contexts. Therefore, this study focused on exploring the various factors, such as TOD indicators, travel, and socio-demographic characteristics, that could influence the level of dissatisfaction of people living in TODs in Hyderabad, India. An ordered logit model was developed, which used data collected from primary as well as secondary sources. Results showed negative impacts of gender (male) and income on levels of dissatisfaction about neighborhoods, prompting policy interventions to address the disparities in gender and income groups. Further, it outlined the need to fulfill the varying requirements of larger households to reduce the dissonance. The roles of density, horizontal land-use diversity, and proximity to transit are very significant in improving living-satisfaction levels among people in TODs. More findings suggested the need for well-designed and maintained public spaces to address concerns related to safety and security and improve levels of satisfaction with TOD neighborhoods. The study also suggested that travel distances for educational trips, trip frequencies for work and shopping, and the use of private vehicles for work trips have positive influences on residential dissonance. It would be important to look for ways to provide convenient and sustainable alternative modes along with compact and diverse development, even though a longer commute may be acceptable.

Are Generation Z Less Car-Centric Than Millennials? A Nationwide Analysis Through the Lens of Youth Licensing

Are young Americans becoming less car-centric? The National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) data reveals a noticeable decline in the rate of driver's license acquisition among teens aged 16–20 years, with 65.4 % holding a driver's license in 2017. The percentage is 8.3 % and 8.1 % lower than in 2001 and 2009, respectively. This research compares the differences in driver's license acquisition between Millennials (teens in 2009) and their succeeding generation – Generation Z (teens in 2017) during late adolescence. It also investigates the factors that influence a teen's decision to hold a driver's license. Findings suggest that the dropped licensing rates between the two survey years can be partially explained by a generational shift in attitudes and cultural changes. Some traits of Generation Z, such as making more educational trips and growing up in a digital world, may significantly influence their decisions about obtaining a driver's license. To further explore whether Generation Z will drive less than Millennials once getting a driver's license, a multivariate analysis is conducted on licensed teens in 2009 and 2017, focusing on their driving distances on the survey day. Notably, this study does not find a significant difference between teens aged 18–20 years from the two generations. This research draws implications for planners, practitioners, and policymakers to proactively respond to the possible consequences of changing American car culture.

In Greek we trust! Παίζοντες μανθάνομεν

AbstractThis article presents the method used in Elliniki Agogi, a private small school that teaches the Ancient Greek language as an extra-curricular activity. Over the 29 years of experimenting with educational material, methods, books and exercises, teaching Ancient Greek as a living language seems like the only method that really works for the students. It is immersive, experiential, educational and fun, but most important, it makes students love what they learn; by loving, they keep wanting to come back. By coming back, they repeat. By repeating; they learn. And by learning Greek as a living language, they never forget it. This is our school's aim: to make our students love the language. Experiential learning is highly valued and applied through visits to archaeological sites, and reviving important historical events. But this is only the beginning; playing, drawing, acting, foreign exchanges, educational trips, digital programs, collaborations with foreign institutions and educational organisations come alive in Elliniki Agogi, a small school that was founded 29 years ago in Greece and has joined worldwide efforts in changing the way Greek is taught in order to promote its true, timeless, precious wisdom. In Elliniki Agogi a combination of teaching Greek as a living language and activities that include play and fun, a method as old as time, shows exactly the reason way the words ‘play’ (παιδιά) and ‘education’ (παιδεία) derive from the exact same root word: παῖς (child). Educational material is also provided in order to further enhance and deepen children's knowledge.

One of the main trends in the development of the tourism market in modern Russia is the stratification of offers of tourist products. On the one hand, a mass tourism product stands out, suitable for most tourists. On the other hand, niche tourism is being formed, the proposals of which take into account all kinds of features and customer requests. In this area, educational trips, ecological, sports and other types of tourism are becoming increasingly popular. The ability of Russian regions to form unique niche tourism products directly affects their branding, popularity among tourists, and, as a result, the economic efficiency of tourism activities at the territory.

School Trips and Local Heritage as a Resource in Primary Education: Teachers’ Perceptions

This paper presents the opinions of primary education teachers in relation to school trips (outdoor learning environment). The following questions are answered: What importance do educational trips have in the context of the curriculum? Does the teacher take advantage of the resources that the environment offers? Are the contents of the curriculum taught during field trips? Are outings planned with the aim of showing students the heritage of the surrounding area? What do students’ families think? In order to answer these questions, a structured questionnaire (CUELX-M ©) was designed, which was then completed by 124 primary school teachers who work in the Region of Murcia (Spain). Through the analysis of the responses to this questionnaire, a detailed study of teachers’ perceptions according to age, gender and teaching experience has been carried out. The reliability of the questionnaire was subjected to expert validation by judges (content, technical and methodological aspects). The reliability of each of the dimensions was also studied, and finally, the construct validity of the scales was studied. The results of Cronbach’s alpha test (=0.867) show that the questionnaire is internally consistent. 98% of the teachers participating in the study agree that school field trips should not be merely recreational and that heritage resources located in the surroundings of schools and cities should be used. However, they also point out that parents of students are sometimes reluctant for their children to participate in such activities due to their economic cost.

Transportation Accessibility Mapping with Educational Facilities Analysis of Nashik City

Accessibility is usually mentioned as the essential principle in new urban planning and land use growth theories. Researchers have proposed a change in the usage of auto mobility planning toward the planning of accessibility. Cities are primarily governed by various purposes, such as work, education and shopping. The main aim of this research is to find out the accessibility of Educational Trips related to different modes of transportation. With the useful resource of case studies included in the literature, we have learned terms and concepts of accessibility in order to achieve this objective. For doing accessibility analysis, firstly Nashik City's secondary information is gathered and evaluated. After doing the secondary analysis, gaps are identified and a primary survey questionnaire is designed so that accessibility can be measured and evaluated in a better way for the city. With the help of a design questionnaire, a primary survey is conducted in Nashik to learn about the city's current travel patterns as well as issues encountered during the trip. Data collected from the primary analysis are used to calculate an accessibility index with graphical method for different modes of transportation and mapped for each zone. Gravity method and Accessibility Ratio for Public transportation method which was used in this study can be used for finding the accessibility to different services like workplaces, recreational places, commercial places and many more. Policymakers can also use accessibility ratio method to improve public transportation infrastructure within the city.

Investigation of behavioral influences of carpool adoption for educational trips – A case study of Thammasat University, Thailand

Carpooling is emerging as a more appealing “sharing economy” form with promising benefits in reducing carbon emissions, traveling costs, and traffic congestion. However, a thorough understanding of carpooling adoption is lacking for policymakers and transport planners in developing countries due to limited scientific research, specifically in Southeast Asia. Therefore, the present study aimed to understand the behavioral influences of carpool adoption in Thailand by conducting a multivariate analysis on a dataset of 307 observations gathered at Thammasat University, Pathum Thani, Thailand. First, a conceptual model was developed to assess the influence of effort expectancy, perceived safety, hedonic motivation, and social influence on carpool behavior intention. Additionally, two constructs related to COVID-19 and time credits were added to assess their impacts. Then, the sample data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). It was found that hedonic motivation, social influence, and time credits as payment method factors play statistically significant direct roles in the carpool behavior intention, whereas effort expectancy, perceived safety, and perception towards compliance with COVID-19 guidelines for carpooling did not. However, significant indirect impacts of effort expectancy and social influence through hedonic motivation were discovered. Upon analysis of the findings, policy implications are presented.

Demand-responsive Users' Travel Behavior and Satisfaction Analysis in Small Cities

This study examines the differences in travel behavior between regular and occasional demand-responsive transport users (public transport users), determines the level of service satisfaction, and identifies the key factors of commuters' preferences of using the demand-responsive transport regularly or occasionally for a small-sized urban area (<50 km2). Data were supplemented through field surveys and by focus group discussions. Binary logistic regression and correlation models were used. It is found that probabilities of irregularity are higher for rural areas, male commuters, short trips, educational trips, low-income groups, and non-direct trips. All users are generally satisfied with the service. The most important factors for occasional users are waiting time, trip cost, and trip duration. On the other hand, regular users pay more attention to cleanliness, safety, and comfort. Scheduling of public transportation lines that serve educational zones and provide accessibility to rural areas are needed to improve the quality and attractiveness of the services.

Foreign Scholars Activities and their Impacts on Sustainable Tourism Development in Nairobi Metropolis, Kenya

Foreign scholars move to international destinations and enroll in institutions for academic courses of study. The students form a promising niche’ market and is the third export earner in Australia. Africa is endowed with unique geographical features which attract the students who enroll in programs such as; eco-tourism, heritage tourism, rural/farm tourism and student exchanges between educational institutions. Africa recognizes educational tourism as a promising niche’ market segment to cushion out the fluctuating numbers of other market segments. The region receives about 14% foreign scholars yearly to add to those existing in their institutions of learning. Kenya receives 50,000 of the students distributed as 1% admissions to public universities and 12% to private universities, a constant 200,000 international students annually. The reasons why scholars from developed nations do not prioritize Africa should be investigated to increase Kenya’s market share. The study purposed to establish the tourist activities that are of interest to the scholars. The scholars from all over the globe join Kenya’s institutions of higher learning and throughout their course of study, they will be attached to attraction sites either as part of their study or as leisure activities. UNESCO supports travel of students to foreign destinations in order to enhance and promote culture and international understanding. International students visit several tourist attraction sites and can be classified as foreign or local tourists. Questionnaires were administered to the scholars, the heads of foreign student offices were subjected in-depth interviews while the communities offering tourism participated in focus group discussions. Only 29.7% (98) had involved themselves with various activities in the communities while a considerable number (65.2%) did not involve themselves in the activities within host communities. However, there was a significant relationship between tourists’ activity options and sustainable tourism development, the P-value 0.029 (P-value<0.05). When tourists’ activity options and economic impact were cross tabulated, no significant relationship was displayed because P-value is 0.301 (P-value>0.05). Majority 58.7% of the students were self-driven to the local communities. The study shows that most of the activities linked to educational trips are organized in relation to the products of tourism available within destinations. FEATURES OF DIGITALIZATION IN THE PROCESS OF PROFESSIONAL TRAINING OF SPECIALISTS IN THE TOURISM INDUSTRY

The article analyzes the features of digitization in the process of professional training of future specialists in the tourism industry in higher education institutions. It is summarized that digitization in higher education is important for teaching and studying the features of the functioning of the tourism industry, which will ensure the competitiveness of graduates for the tourism industry. It is found out that the forms of teaching used in the process of professional training of future specialists in the tourism industry in institutions of higher education should be integrated with the needs of tourism organizations and aimed at generating innovative digital ideas, where any person in the organization can propose new production methods for implementation processes or apply new technologies so that the business creates additional material values and services that will allow to obtain profits, as well as to have a favorable competitive position in the market. Emphasis is placed on the fact that one of the forms of training specialists of the specialty tourism in higher education institutions is the use of non-formal education opportunities, including online tourism courses, internships, practical courses in hotels, and educational (excursion) trips. Real-time hands-on research and learning have been found to help students better understand «real-life» tourism situations and issues. In the article, we have summarized the ways of digitalization of professional training of future specialists in the tourism industry, which can be used by higher education institutions today. Digitalization in the process of professional training of future specialists in the field of tourism is due to the development of scientific and technical progress and active digitalization of the field of tourism. Active digitization of the educational process allows the use of digital technologies and at the same time the use of blended learning, which is a challenge for teachers and students. Therefore, taking into account the increased requirements for specialists in the field of tourism, in the educational process of professional training in higher education institutions, digital competences should be formed.

CONTINUITY OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AS AN INNOVATIVE CHALLENGE IN THE CONDITIONS OF EUROPEAN INTEGRATION AND DIGITALIZATION

The article is devoted to the issue of continuity of vocational education in the conditions of European integration and digitalization. The purpose of research is analysis of strategic documents and accumulated better practices of the EU countries for identifying the main directions of development of the continuous education in Ukraine in the conditions of European integration and digitalization. Based on the analysis of the strategic documents of the European Union, it has been found that high-quality educational content (in terms of content and form of execution) with the possibility of interactive participation and mentoring is in demand today. Distance education has significant advantages for the implementation of continuous education that is oriented to an unlimited number of students with the possibility of obtaining knowledge at a convenient time, the possibility of choosing a convenient (optimal) learning pace. That variant of obtaining education is available for people of different training levels, age, social position and health. It has been summed up that the distance format is largely consistent with the principles of the concept of continuous education, and meet the dynamically changing needs of a modern person in applied knowledge. The general specific of the examined formats is strengthening the components of the informal nature of education, individualization (customization) of educational practices and orientation to the subjective needs of the personality. It has been determined that the key direction of development of the educational environment in the conditions of European integration and digitalization are distance education; gamification of education and using cloud technologies; implementation of augmented reality solutions and visualization technologies; development of social networks in education; development of mass opened online courses. It has been generalized that the following measures will facilitate the continuity of vocational education in the conditions of European integration and digitalization: educational trips, exchange of delegations; education in the format of "summer" and "winter" schools with "deep immersion", organization and conduction of author’s master classes, use of project technologies and techniques of game technology; increasing the share of distance learning to 50% of the total number of courses, using interactive forms (webinars, quizzes, virtual traineeships, etc.) with the involvement of representatives of educational organizations of the European Union.

Gender Differences in Travel Behavior, for Daily Trips in Kathmandu Valley

Kathmandu valley is the main center for economic activities and with it travel demand has increased drastically in the Valley in the recent years, along with rapid growth in population. This paper brings into highlight, the role of gender on urban mobility, for daily trips, by assessing the gender differences in travel behavior of workers and students, in commuting their work and educational trips respectively. Household survey was carried out in different parts of the study area, using random sampling. Data was analyzed to associate gender with travel mode choice and trip length. The statistical analysis of the travel data shows that there is a significant level of association between gender and the way, they travel. The modal share and trip length varies significantly between men and women, more prominently for work trips. For educational trips, the variation is observed comparatively, to a lesser extent. For work trips, men are using more of the private vehicles and relying less on public transport and non-motorized means of travel, as compared to women. It is also revealed that that males are commuting longer trip distances as compared to females. From the findings, recommendations for gender equality in urban transport and promotion of sustainable urban mobility, emphasizing the use of public transport and non-motorized modes of transport.

VI International Interdisciplinary Scientific Conference “Metamorphoses of Culture: Donum didacticum. Didactic Code in the Culture of the 18th – 20th Centuries” at NSU

The report presents the analysis of leading topics and individual reports of the VI International Interdisciplinary Scientific Conference “Metamorphoses of Culture”, held as part of the international forum “Heritage” at the Humanitarian Institute of Novosibirsk State University on November 19–20, 2021. The conference was dedicated to the problems of didactic code transformation in the culture of contemporary and the most recent times. The main discussion raised questions about the didactic culture code from the 18th until the 20th century. A special subject of consideration was the conceptual sphere of education and training, and the features of its linguistic and artistic representation. Separate groups of topics and issues related to the problems of education were: court pedagogy and Russian culture of the 18th century till the early 20th century, educational literature in the book culture of Russia in recent times, visual didactics in the space of poly-code text, a book as a source of knowledge – verbal and visual aspects of book culture.In the context of modern pedagogical mentality, real issues related to traditional education methods were reinterpreted, such as travel as a form of education – educational trips in the culture of the nobles, and mnemonic practices in the pedagogy of the 18th – 20th centuries. The revision of the semantic traditions of perception of the basic codes of education (such as “mentor”, “book”, and “road”) formed imperatives for summing up the results of the conference. The prolific achievements of the conference were reached due to the high scientific level and interdisciplinary nature of the reports; culturologists, historians, linguists, literary critics, art critics, and philosophers took part in the scientific discussion.

Gendered mode choice preferences and characteristics for educational trips in Abbottabad, Pakistan: An empirical investigation

Educational trips are a major component of traffic in peak hours on working days. For proper trip forecasting, gendered preferences and dynamics must be understood. This study identifies gender-based model choices, preferences, and travel characteristics among school-going children and investigates the satisfaction level regarding public transport in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Using Slovin’s sampling method, a total of 370 samples were collected. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and paired sample t-tests were conducted to determine the significant differences between genders and their travel characteristics. For public transport satisfaction, an index was constructed using indicators extracted from a rigorous literature review. The results show a significant difference between the mode choices and preferences of boys and girls. There was no significant difference in travel time, distance, and cost, but boys tended to make more trips than girls. The satisfaction level shows that girls had a more negative opinion about public transport than boys. This study argues that transport and urban planners must incorporate both gender preferences for developing transportation alternatives for students.

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of a project on teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs about organizing trips to out-of-school environments. The present study is a simultaneous mixed pattern research using quantitative and qualitative data. Twenty-four science teachers participated in the study. The effect of training and applications was also evaluated in terms of gender and seniority. Data were collected through Self-Efficacy Belief Scale for Organizing Educational Trips to Out-of-school Environment and open-ended question forms. While there was no difference in self-efficacy beliefs between male and female teachers at the beginning of the project, there was a difference in favor of females at the end of the project. Also, while there was a difference in favor of senior teachers at the beginning of the project, this difference disappeared at the end of the project. As can be seen in the present study, practical activities related to out-of-school learning are very important and such training should be delivered to both in pre-service and in-service teachers.

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the spatio-temporal characteristics of a bicycle-sharing system: A case study of Pun Pun, Bangkok, Thailand.

The COVID-19 pandemic is found to be one of the external stimuli that greatly affects mobility of people, leading to a shift of transportation modes towards private individual ones. To properly explain the change in people's transport behavior, especially in pre- and post- pandemic periods, a tensor-based framework is herein proposed and applied to Pun Pun-the only public bicycle-sharing system in Bangkok, Thailand-where multidimensional trip data of Pun Pun are decomposed into four different modes related to their spatial and temporal dimensions by a non-negative Tucker decomposition approach. According to our computational results, the first pandemic wave has a sizable influence not only on Pun Pun but also on other modes of transportation. Nonetheless, Pun Pun is relatively more resilient, as it recovers more quickly than other public transportation modes. In terms of trip patterns, we find that, prior to the pandemic, trips made during weekdays are dominated by business trips with two peak periods (morning and evening peaks), while those made during weekends are more related to leisure activities as they involve stations nearby a public park. However, after the first pandemic wave ends, the patterns of weekday trips have been drastically changed, as the number of business trips sharply drops, while that of educational trips connecting metro/subway stations with a major educational institute in the region significantly rises. These findings may be regarded as a reflection of the ever-changing transport behavior of people seeking a sustainable mode of private transport, with a more positive outlook on the use of bicycle-sharing system in Bangkok, Thailand.
