Much space is devoted to what is wrong with nurse education (editorial, news, analysis and letters February 17). But the issues of student attrition and the credibility of educators are two old chestnuts that have been knocking around for decades.

How Time Flies! [Editor's Column

I can't believe that IEEE Electronics Magazine came into existence three years ago. How time flies! More than 40 very good scientific and technical articles were published during that time. These articles covered all fields of industrial electronics and were published in five different categories: features, the Past and Present column, the From Mind to Market column, the My View column, and the Industrial Forum column. Some of them have a very high citation index. Other valuable information explained in our columns, such as Society News, Chapter News, Education News, and Book News, help unite our Society. I would also like to thank Marco Liserre for his amazing efforts as editor-in-chief of IEEE Electronics Magazine during the last three years, and I wish him good luck in his future career. Marco raised the standards of IEEE Electronics Magazine to a very high level. I must meet these standards.

Teachers in the news: a critical analysis of one US newspaper's discourse on education, 2006–2007

Public education discourse in the USA has been characterized by messages of crisis shaping education policies across national contexts. Education policy solutions target a lack of qualified teachers and insufficient oversight of teacher practice as central factors in the crisis, placing teacher identity as knowledgeable, authoritative professionals at the center of educational reform debates. Mainstream news media is a key site for education policy debate. I employ critical discourse analysis of education news published in a major US newspaper, uncovering how grammar patterns in news discourse situate teacher identity in relation to knowledge and authority. I demonstrate how the paper's discourse frames teacher identity in terms of Accountability and Caring and discuss how, in the context of larger economic and social policy debates, Accountability gains authority over caring to shape education policy. I call for teachers to integrate critical participation in public education debates as key element of professional identity.

Potential Benefits And Complexities Of Blended Learning In Higher Education: The Case Of The University Of Botswana

Blended/hybrid learning is dominating news in higher education as a training and educational delivery method of choice. It is seen as a link between instructors, learners and classrooms located in different places to enhance learning. Based on the interviews with 15 faculty members and one administrator that had direct experience with this form of delivery at the University of Botswana (UB) the findings suggested two major themes that dominated faculty members ’accounts: potential benefits and challenges of blended learning. The study was guided by the Diffusion of Innovation theory. The potential benefits of blended learning included improved pedagogy; engagement in learning; and added flexibility in the teaching and learning to mention a few. Faculty members perceived complexities such as lack of students’ readiness to use the course management system, slow network and breakdowns; lack of computers for students and lack of time. The article concludes by suggesting future directions for blended learning (BL) at the UB.

During this award cycle, 11 eligible applications were received; 6 from the USA and 5 from other countries. Non-U.S. applicants were from China (2), Greece (1), Russia (1), and Turkey (1). The applicant pool consisted of highly qualified students. The education committee would like to give a special thanks to the dedicated group of MTT-S members who generously gave their time to serve as judges of this year's scholarship applications.

Student high efficiency power amplifier design competition [Education News

In 2005, the MTT-S High Power Amplifier Technical Coordinating Committee (MTT-5) decided to sponsor a Student High Efficiency Power Amplifier Design Competition with measurements and awards taking place at the International Microwave Symposium. The reasoning behind the contest was to attract students to the study of microwave electronics by providing them with an exciting challenge, make them aware of the importance of RF and microwave technology in our lives, and to encourage its study thus providing graduates with the skills needed by the job market and our society.
