The implementation method used in community service activities this time has 5 stages, the first is the observation method, the second is the introduction method, the third is the learning method, the fourth is the assessment method and the fifth is the sustainability method. The result of the service is an educational learning tool in the form of a modified snakes and ladders game that can improve students' grades and enthusiasm for learning and the role of this educational learning is to help students absorb lessons using a game method that can be played individually or in groups, and can be applied in various subjects.

Self-directed learning versus traditional didactic learning in undergraduate medical education: a systemic review and meta-analysis

BackgroundSelf-Directed Learning (SDL) is a theory of andragogy in which adult learners take their own initiative to identify and tailor their individual learning process and outcomes. In undergraduate medical education, SDL aims to develop medical students into lifelong learners. This study aims to estimate the overall effectiveness of self-directed learning compared to traditional didactic learning (TDL).MethodsWe performed a systematic review and meta-analysis according to the PRISMA statement. A systematic search was used across PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Google Scholar to identify peer-reviewed articles spanning from January 1, 2014, to May 30, 2024. Key words used were “self-directed learning” AND “undergraduate medical education.” Forest plots were generated with the Open Meta-analyst Software, comparing SDL and TDL.ResultsA total of 2,955 titles and abstracts were screened for eligibility, of which 95 articles met the eligibility criteria for full-text review. Following a more detailed screening, 19 articles met the criteria for inclusion in the systematic review and 14 articles met the criteria for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The systematic review included 2,098 students while the meta-analysis included 1,792 students. The overall mean difference for all studies was 2.399, 95% CI [0.121–4.678], and I2 = 98.56%.ConclusionSelf-directed learning compared to traditional didactic learning is an effective learning strategy in medical undergraduate education and has the potential to aid in students’ learning and improve their cognitive performance. Moreover, SDL nurtures qualities such as autonomy, curiosity, and self-regulation, which are essential for success in the ever-evolving field of medicine.

The Role of Education Leaders in Implementing and Sustaining ICT in Compulsory Education in Morocco

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about a profound shift in education, underscoring the urgent need for the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in learning environments. This study investigates the teachers’ perspectives about the role of educational leaders in introducing and sustaining the use of technologies almost three years after the pandemic lockdown. 130 teachers from primary and secondary levels throughout Morocco, who do not anymore use technology, filled a questionnaire enquiring about their challenges and barriers of introducing and sustaining the use of technologies after the pandemic. Findings report that despite the important institutional initiatives in ICT integration in education and the accelerated digital connectivity during Covid-19, Moroccan education still faces major challenges hindering the development of long-term educational technology learning goals. Findings also report that the assets emanating from the efforts deployed during COVID-19 have not been capitalized. This implies that the education leaders need to play a more major role in sustaining technology integration.

Levelling up learning in higher education: Gamification of in‐video components to supercharge student learning and achievement in video‐based learning

AbstractDespite the rapid growth of video‐based learning in higher education, students face challenges in sustaining their full attention on video lectures. While gamification has been used to engage students, there have been few attempts to gamify in‐video learning. The study aimed to create a gamified instructional video and examine the effects on learning. We identified gamification principles that can be incorporated to gamify in‐video components. An experiment conducted for validation purposes involved 48 undergraduate and graduate students. The results revealed that the participants who learned from the gamified instruction video (ie, experimental group, n = 23) had higher levels of necessary cognitive load required for accomplishing the given tasks than the participants who learned from a conventional video (ie, control group, n = 25). Although there was no significant difference in situational interest, the experimental group also exhibited better achievement, higher levels of intrinsic motivation, and learning satisfaction than the control group. Interview results revealed that the experimental group had a positive learning experience and clarified how the gamification strategies contributed to the outcomes. We discuss the implications of this study for research and practice. Practitioner notesWhat is already known about this topic Video‐based learning (VBL) is recognized for its ability to accommodate students with diverse educational needs, and higher education has paid attention to its accessibility. During VBL, students face challenges in sustaining their full attention on video lectures unless they are highly motivated to learn. Moreover, students lack access to receive real‐time guidance and feedback. What this paper adds We created a gamified VBL environment by embedding game elements into an instructional video. The experimental results indicated that the gamified video did not significantly increase learners' situational interest but enhanced necessary cognitive load, intrinsic motivation, learning satisfaction, and academic achievement. Interview findings supported these results, revealing that the gamified video effectively reduced unnecessary cognitive load while increasing cognitive efforts toward achieving learning objectives, thereby fostering engaging learning experiences. Implications for practice and/or policy Our attempts to create gamified instructional videos demonstrated how to enhance video lectures through gamification strategies and offered guidance for the design of gamified instructional videos. We also contributed to the exploration of gamification strategies in education and the potential of relatively underexplored gamification elements.

Pedagogical AI conversational agents in higher education: a conceptual framework and survey of the state of the art

Abstract The ever-changing global educational landscape, coupled with the advancement of Web3, is seeing rapid changes in the ways pedagogical artificially intelligent conversational agents are being developed and used to advance teaching and learning in higher education. Given the rapidly evolving research landscape, there is a need to establish what the current state of the art is in terms of the pedagogical applications and technological functions of these conversational agents and to identify the key existing research gaps, and future research directions, in the field. A literature survey of the state of the art of pedagogical AI conversational agents in higher education was conducted. The resulting literature sample (n = 92) was analysed using thematic template analysis, the results of which were used to develop a conceptual framework of pedagogical conversational agents in higher education. Furthermore, a survey of the state of the art was then presented as a function of the framework. The conceptual framework proposes that pedagogical AI conversational agents can primarily be considered in terms of their pedagogical applications and their pedagogical purposes, which include pastoral, instructional and cognitive, and are further considered in terms of mode of study and intent. The technological functions of the agents are also considered in terms of embodiment (embodied/disembodied) and functional type and features. This research proposes that there are numerous opportunities for future research, such as, the use of conversational agents for enhancing assessment, reflective practice and to support more effective administration and management practice. In terms of technological functions, future research would benefit from focusing on enhancing the level of personalisation and media richness of interaction that can be achieved by AI conversational agents.

Learning and playing style differences between K12 and university students related to educational video games

Purpose This paper presents an in-depth study of learners’ learning and playing styles and their implications for educational video games. This study aims to scrutinize the manifestation of learning and playing styles among learners, to identify the style predispositions and dominance and to assess the implication of these results for educational video games. Design/methodology/approach This paper proposes a structured model with a detailed methodology for evaluating and categorizing style predisposition and the learner’s dominant learning and playing style. The multimodal style predisposition aggregates several manifested styles at three distinguished levels to achieve more precise differentiation. The authors analyze the outcomes of an empirical field study of 676 K12 and university students, making an in-depth evaluation of their learning and playing styles. Findings Based on the presented model to determine the level of preferences and dominance of styles, the study reveals that multimodal style predisposition prevails for both learning and playing styles. Most learners manifest several dominant styles. While the Kinesthetic Visual, Auditory, Read/Write and Kinesthetic (VARK) learning style and Logician and Strategist playing styles prevail, the Read/Write and Competitor styles are the least preferred. Research limitations/implications The survey explores particular learning and playing styles – VARK and adaptive technology-enhanced platform for edutainment (ADOPTA). It covers only Bulgarian students, who share common national cultural predispositions. The different sizes of the samples (234 K12 and 432 university students) are also a limitation. Further studies should involve international and equal samples of participants. Practical implications Educational video games should reflect the findings about learners’ preferences and predispositions at the planning, design and practical application level. Social implications Game-based learning and gamification approaches in education should focus on aspects other than competition. Originality/value This paper presents an original methodology for modeling, evaluating and categorizing style predisposition and students’ dominant learning and playing styles and results about these styles of K12 and university students in the context of educational video games.

Hybrid learning in higher education: Considerations for its implementation in course design

Hybrid learning, combining face-to-face and distance instruction through digital technologies, has gained greater prominence in higher education, noted for its flexibility and adaptability. This innovative model fosters student engagement by overcoming the limitations of the traditional classroom and promoting collaborative learning and autonomy. This article presents a methodological guide for planning hybrid environments with a student-centered approach supported by digital technologies. The method is based on a literature review, providing a conceptualization and characterization of hybrid learning. It also outlines a structured guide for a university course under the hybrid model, considering available physical and virtual conditions, the degree of possible hybridization, as well as the development of learning objectives, activity design, instructional material, assessment strategies, and chronogram. The results show the experience from a thematic unit of the course “pedagogical praxis in the university context” at the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, which exemplifies this planning by integrating face-to-face and virtual activities, and continuous and formative assessment. In conclusion, understanding the advantages and challenges of hybrid learning is key to developing effective methodologies focused on flexibility and personalization in higher education.

GENERATIVE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: RISKS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN EDUCATION. THE «COUNSELORBOT» PROJECT FOR TUTORIAL SUPPORT Abstract Artificial intelligence (AI) is progressively entering educational practices, influencing teaching and learning methodologies. Its use raises issues of various kinds – educational, methodological-didactic, and ethical – highlighting risks such as discrimination, increasing technological dependency, and the uncontrolled generation of inaccurate and hardly recognizable content due to biases in datasets. The European Union, through the AI Act, has classified the use of AI in education as «high risk», emphasizing the importance of a cautious and responsible approach. This article analyzes the opportunities offered by AI and the strategies to mitigate its risks, examines the AI Act, and presents the «Counselor-Bot» project, a concrete example of an application designed to support students in their educational and career guidance paths.

Deconstructing University Learners' Adoption Intention Towards AIGC Technology: A Mixed‐Methods Study Using ChatGPT as an Example

ABSTRACTBackgroundChatGPT, as a cutting‐edge technology in education, is set to significantly transform the educational landscape, raising concerns about technological ethics and educational equity. Existing studies have not fully explored learners' intentions to adopt artificial intelligence generated content (AIGC) technology, highlighting the need for deeper insights into the factors influencing adoption.ObjectivesThis study aims to investigate higher education learners' adoption intentions towards AIGC technology, with a focus on understanding the underlying reasons and future prospects for its application in education.MethodsThe research is divided into two phases. First, an exploratory analysis involving practical activities and interviews develops an action decision framework for AIGC adoption. Second, a confirmatory analysis using fuzzy‐set qualitative comparative analysis on 233 valid questionnaires identifies six configurations associated with high adoption intentions, emphasising the roles of AI literacy and perceived behavioural control.Results and ConclusionsThe study reveals key factors influencing AIGC adoption, including the importance of AI literacy and perceived behavioural control. It provides actionable insights for educators and learners to prepare for and effectively integrate AIGC technology, ensuring equitable and adaptive educational practices.

Integrating Motivation Theory into the AIED Curriculum for Technical Education: Examining the Impact on Learning Outcomes and the Moderating Role of Computer Self-Efficacy

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into education has gained increasing attention, yet limited research examines how the curriculum design can enhance learning outcomes and influence learners’ intentions to continue AI learning. This study addresses this gap by integrating the theory of planned behavior, technology acceptance model, theories of motivation, and computer self-efficacy to explore the factors affecting learners’ behavioral intentions in AI education. Using the AI course quality as the primary antecedent and “intention to continue taking courses” as the dependent variable, the study investigates the structural relationships and mediating variables between these factors. Data were collected through a stratified random sampling method from 19 universities in Taiwan, involving 200 students who had completed five core AI-related courses, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, internet of things, big data, and robotics. The analysis, conducted using PLS-SEM, revealed that AI course quality directly and indirectly influences learners’ behavioral intentions through mediating variables such as learning satisfaction, computer self-efficacy, technological literacy, and computer learning motivation. Moreover, AI course quality exerted a significant positive effect on computer motivation, which, in turn, influenced self-efficacy and learning outcomes. These findings provide valuable insights into the antecedents and processes shaping learners’ intentions to continue AI learning, offering practical and theoretical implications for AI education.

Unveiling the strengths and weaknesses of technology in interpreter training

Abstract Thanks to the advancement of technology, there has been much growth in research on integrating technologies into language teaching and learning over the past few decades. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the development of educational technology and online learning. While the use of technology has been extensively investigated and reviewed in English language teaching contexts, especially in English as a second/foreign language, computer-assisted interpreter training (CAIT) has been under-researched and reviewed. This paper aims to provide an aerial view of ways in which interpreting learning has been reconciled with different types of technological tools explored in the existing literature. It traces how these tools have been incorporated into interpreter training over time, discusses studies on CAIT, and provides some insights into research needs for future work. The paper discusses, evaluates, and analyses previous research on CAIT based on the three main types of technologies/tools used in interpreter training — computer-assisted interpreting (CAI) tools, virtual reality (VR), and a combination of mobile and virtual/extended reality (VR/XR) technologies. Prior research on CAIT has generally indicated that the benefits of CAIT outweigh the shortcomings. While there has been steady growth in research on CAIT, this paper concludes that more theory-grounded experiential studies are needed to explore the effectiveness and factors influencing multiple emerging technologies in various language contexts.

Math misconceptions: Mistakes, misunderstanding, and confusion

In this study, we investigate mathematical misconceptions, particularly prevalent among high school students, and offer solutions. The primary aims of our research include identifying the most common mathematical misconceptions, uncovering their underlying causes, and evaluating research-based solutions that have successfully addressed these issues. For this study, data were collected using a mixed-methods approach in Stirling Schools operating throughout Iraq. Data were gathered via a diagnostic test, as well as teacher interviews and classroom observations. The test revealed conceptual, procedural, and application problems, while interviews and observations gave qualitative information about the sources of misunderstandings and teaching tactics. The data analysis blended quantitative mistake classification with qualitative theme analysis to provide a complete picture of misunderstandings and effective training approaches. In light of the data obtained, we can state that misconceptions typically stem from a lack of conceptual understanding, over-reliance on procedural methods, and contextual misunderstandings. Additionally, it has been shown that conceptual education, visual aids, and peer-supported learning help eliminate mathematical misconceptions. These valuable findings hold significant implications for educators seeking to improve students' mathematical knowledge by emphasizing the importance of concept-based learning and providing opportunities for re-education. Through this study, we offer key insights into how widespread mathematical misconceptions can be effectively addressed, contributing meaningfully to mathematics education.

Evaluasi Program Pembelajaran Pendidikan Agama Islam Menggunakan Model Context, Input, Process and Product di SDN 430 Pandoso Kabupaten Luwu

This article discusses the evaluation of the Islamic Religious Education learning program at SDN 430 Pandoso, Luwu Regency using the Context, Input, Process and Product (CIPP) evaluation model. The purpose of this study is for researchers to determine and assess the success of the learning program and its suitability for the Islamic learning curriculum at the school. This research discusses program evaluation based on the CIPP model proposed by Stufflebeam. In this study, context, input, process, and product are used as the four elements of evaluation. The study involved 32 fourth and fifth grade students and Islamic religious education teachers. Information for this study was collected through documentation, interviews, observation and questionnaires. Furthermore, qualitative data analysis and quantitative data analysis were used as methods to analyze the data in this study. The results of this study indicate that there are discrepancies between programs and learning plans, human resources, facilities and infrastructure, learning media, learning methods and student learning outcomes. Based on the results of research on the evaluation of the Islamic Religious Education learning program using the CIPP model obtained an average percentage of 81% with a very good category based on the results of the input evaluation of 78% with a good category, process evaluation of 85% with a very good category and product evaluation of 86% with a very good category. As a recommendation, this study suggests concrete solutions such as focused training for teachers, utilization of technology in learning, using active learning methods and providing additional learning to students so as to create effective and quality learning. The evaluation of the learning process also highlighted the need for guidance to teachers in making and operating learning media.

Generative AI and Mobile Learning in Higher Education: Comparing Student and Faculty Perspectives on Employability Impact

Globally, the production of moral citizens and professionals depends heavily on higher education. The advent of ChatGPT and other generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools has presented both opportunities and problems for the established educational model. The future of higher education, however, is a topic of little inquiry; instead, discussions these days are mostly focused on policy creation and evaluation. The purpose of this paper is to examine how AI is affecting international students’ education. It uses a research approach, as opposed to a standard literature review, to look at possible applications of AI and talk about related issues. The paper examines several AI applications, including chatbots for research and learning, adaptive testing, personalized learning, and statistical analysis. This study clarifies how AI may enhance learning effectiveness and offer tailored educational support by examining its role in education for international students. It also points out important dangers and constraints that must be properly addressed, such as privacy issues, cultural differences, language barriers, and ethical considerations. Predicting future advancements in AI, however, will be exceedingly challenging.

Unveiling the ultimate advantage: a meta-analysis of 3D visualization and problem-based learning in orthopedic education

BackgroundThree-dimensional (3D) visualization has become increasingly prevalent in orthopedic education to tackle the distinct anatomical challenges of the field. However, there is a conspicuous lack of systematic reviews that thoroughly evaluate both the advantages and drawbacks of integrating 3D with problem-based learning (3D + PBL).MethodsA rigorous search of English databases (Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) and Chinese databases (National Knowledge Infrastructure: CNKI, Chongqing VIP: VIP, and Wan Fang) were performed up to July 2024 to identify relevant studies. Relevant studies were selected based on established eligibility criteria, with clinical data carefully extracted for analysis. Eighteen randomized controlled trials involving a total of 1,077 participants were included in the analysis.ResultsThe findings indicated that 3D + PBL instruction significantly outperformed traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) in terms of theoretical knowledge (SMD = 1.62, 95% CI: 1.14–2.10, P < 0.00001) and practical operational scores (SMD = 2.29, 95% CI: 1.41–3.16, P < 0.00001). Furthermore, students exposed to 3D + PBL teaching exhibited a significantly better understanding of orthopedic anatomical structures compared to those receiving LBL (SMD = 1.18, 95% CI: 0.71–1.65, P < 0.00001). Additionally, students in the 3D + PBL group achieved higher theoretical grades (OR = 2.95, 95% CI: 1.57–5.55, P = 0.0008) and reported greater overall satisfaction (OR = 3.26, 95% CI: 1.91–5.54, P < 0.0001) compared to their LBL counterparts.ConclusionGiven the unique demands of orthopedic education, 3D + PBL emerges as a highly effective teaching method. It not only improves students' theoretical scores but also enhances their communication skills and comprehension of complex concepts. Furthermore, students exhibit greater satisfaction with this approach.

"No pain, no gain": Simulation-based learning in teacher education: The mediating role of simulation hindrances.

Research on educational simulations has attempted to decipher the simulation-based learning (SBL) process by examining factors that facilitate and impede this process. In the current study, we examined the role of SBL participants' hindrances, in particular their experience of anxiety or fear, which we view using the framework of leaving one's comfort zone. Departure from one's comfort zone has never been studied in the context of SBL in teacher education. A quantitative analysis of data collected via a questionnaire on Simulation Learning Outcomes in Teacher Education (SLOTE) revealed a model in which the hindrance variable potentially mediated all of the relationships between the background variables and the simulation learning outcomes (i.e., communication skills and collaborative learning insights). These results improve the theoretical understanding of the SBL process in this field and indicate ways to optimally utilize potential hindrances to plan and apply SBL for the purpose of learning.
