“HE LOVED HIS NATIVE LANGUAGE TO THE POINT OF ADORATION...ˮ (A new reading of A.N. Ostrovsky’s texts on Kostroma land: bibliography review)

For many years, Кostroma researchers, full and associate members of the educational and scientific research laboratory “Lexicology and Lexicography” currently operating at Kostroma State University, have been studying the works of A.N. Ostrovsky in linguistic terms. Russian Russian writers have worked out in sufficient detail both the problem of the folk-colloquial, including dialectal, stream in the multidimensional work of the classic of Russian literature playwright, and the problem of the playwright’s contribution to the creation of a new Russian literary language built on democratic principles and continuing the Pushkin tradition of organic fusion of book and spoken elements. The topics such as “Lexical richness of the Russian language” with subtopics are noted: vocabulary of significant and official parts of speech, productive and rare, motivated and unmotivated, free and composed of stable turns, modern and outdated, neutral and affected vocabulary, own and common, locally and stylistically colored, including vernacular, professionalism and jargonisms, native Russian and borrowed vocabulary, etc., as well as the topic “Grammatical features of the hypotaxis of texts by A.N. Ostrovsky”, etc. The genre theme of studying the language of the playwright’s works is embodied in more than a hundred scientific articles in academic publications of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, peer-reviewed scientific journals, various collections of scientific papers and materials of scientific conferences, in the creation of dictionaries, encyclopedias, monographs, dissertations. The authors of the review article also offer a bibliographic index of works on the language of A.N. Ostrovsky’s works published by Kostroma researchers in 1974–2022.

In this study, the effect of 23-hydroxybetulinic acid (23-HBA), a compound isolated from the traditional herb Pulsatilla chinensis (Bunge) Regel, on experimental UC was studied. C57BL/6J male mice were administrated with 3% dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) in drinking water to establish the UC model. 23-HBA was orally administrated at either 3.75, 7.5, or 15 mg/kg for 6 days. Mesalazine was used as a positive control. Examination of the body weight, colon length, disease activity index (DAI), histopathology examination, inflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress, and protein expression was performed. The pathological changes were examined with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Aixian blue-glycogen (AB-PAS) staining. In cultured RAW 264.7 cells, the effects of 23-HBA on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and oxidative stress were analyzed. Compared with the colitis model, 23-HBA treatment significantly increased the body weight and colon length and decreased the DAI score. Pathological staining showed that 23-HBA mitigated the damage in intestinal structures, the increase in inflammatory cell infiltration, the increase in submucosa edema, and the decrease in goblet cell number. Furthermore, 23-HBA decreased IL-1β, IL-6, and MDA levels in the colon tissues. In addition, 23-HBA inhibited the protein expressions of COX-2, iNOS, and NF-κB p65 both in the colon tissues and in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. In conclusion, these results showed that 23-HBA alleviated DSS-induced acute UC in mice and inhibited LPS-stimulated inflammation in RAW 264.7 cells possibly mediated by regulating the NF-κB pathway.

Open Research Tools for the Learning Technologies Innovation Lab

Orchestrating scientific work in educational research laboratories is demanding, especially when many interdisciplinary perspectives are involved. A monolithic approach does not suffice here. This paper describes an open-source architecture for an educational research laboratory. The presented system assists interdisciplinary scientists in implementing prototypes, evaluating new didactical approaches, researching collaborative learning processes, collecting learning analytics data, abstracting and automating experimental procedures, and securely monitoring progress within the lab, even in hybrid or remote setups. Due to both asynchronous and synchronous capabilities, the presented components make it easy to virtualize experiments, incorporate them in courses and lectures, and empower self-regulated but still monitorable learning processes.
 The ecosystem described originated in the context of collaborative educational Serious Games for interactive table-top displays but is implemented modular and scales well regarding concurrent experiments, connected clients, and other use cases like VR and smart environments.

Comparative Study of the Selective Sorption of Organic Dyes on Inorganic Materials—A Cost-Effective Method for Waste Treatment in Educational and Small Research Laboratories

Educational and research laboratories often produce relatively small amounts of highly diverse organic wastes. Treating waste can contribute significantly to the cost of running laboratories. This study introduced a simple and economical waste management system such that readily available used chromatography-grade inorganic materials, such as silica and alumina (basic and acidic), are utilized to treat remnant dye solutions and solution wastes from educational and small research laboratories. To recycle the adsorbents, they were heated to 600 °C, where the adsorbates were combusted. The results showed that acidic alumina is an effective adsorbent material for azo dyes and anionic dyes/stains, as well as textile dyes, with a 98 to 100% removal efficiency. Furthermore, alumina and silica possess excellent regeneration properties, where the dye removal efficiency of the materials was retained after regeneration at 600 °C. The adsorption properties of the materials were compared with those of aliginite and activated biomass from coffee grounds. Kinetic and thermodynamic studies of the sorption processes on the different materials were carried out. Overall, the inorganic materials used were efficient at removing contaminating remnant organic dyes stemming from educational and small research laboratories.

An important trend in today’s conditions (Russia’s military aggression, the COVID-19 pandemic) is the use of information and communication technologies in the modern educational process, including virtual reality technologies. Scientists of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine pay considerable attention to the use of virtual reality technologies in education in Ukraine. Their works reflect the accumulated domestic and foreign experience in working with virtual reality technologies, the introduction of virtual reality platforms in distance learning. In their research, researchers note that virtual reality technologies, as an effective tool of the educational process, have great potential for solving problems of the educational process. In their work, scientists note that the prospect of further research is the mass introduction into the educational process of modern educational institutions of virtual reality technologies, as well as the development of methodological and didactic materials for their effective use.In their work, scientists and practitioners of educational institutions pay considerable attention to one of the promising areas of application of virtual information technology, in particular the development of virtual laboratories. These software environments can serve to provide a better level of learning material and with which you can make it more saturated, visual, bright and accessible. A virtual learning environment allows you to model the behavior of real-world objects in a computer environment and promotes the acquisition of new knowledge and skills on a more conscious and deeper level. The issue of virtual laboratories is widely covered in the foreign press. First of all, there are the problems of implementing a virtual laboratory for medical students, such as nurses and exercise specialists, and the work of a virtual educational research laboratory in the nuclear field, including the development of 3D models of the TRIGA reactor using virtual reality models.

Working/non-Working Status of Patents Granted to HEIs and NRLs in India

The era of knowledge economy has seen a transition in the business market, from the need to control raw materials towards the protection of ideas, either as tangible or non-tangible assets. These assets may be secured in the form of various intellectual property (IP) instruments such as patents, know-how or technologies. These IP instruments (patents) not only give the IP owners (patentees) a monopoly over the use of their ideas/inventions, but also mandate them to commercially exploit the same for the benefit of the population at large. While economically developed countries (like China, USA, South Korea, Japan, etc.) appreciate this fact, developing countries like India are yet to make their mark in this transition; thus it is imperative to evaluate the IP landscape of the country. It is well acknowledged that major contributors to fundamental research in any country are the higher educational institutions (HEIs) and national research laboratories (NRLs). Hence, this study evaluates the patent commercialization ecosystem of Indian HEIs (351) and NRLs (553) for the period January 2010 to December 2017, based on the working statements filed by the patentees/assignees in the prescribed Form-27 at the Indian Patent Office.

Analysis of the functioning of the educational and research laboratory “Pharmadar” in the context of the preparation of a Ph.D. on the example of the pedagogical load of the cycle of choice “Preclinical experimental research”

The cycle of choice “Preclinical experimental research” is an integral component of the compulsory discipline “Pharmacology”. Successful pedagogical training of scientific personnel (graduate students) became possible thanks to the development of the curriculum, which, first of all, became possible thanks to the efforts of the scientific personnel of the Pharmadar Educational and Research Laboratory. They provide not only the functioning of the cycle, but also carry out the scientific and practical burden of fulfilling the tasks of scientific research and economic calculation programs. The composition of the mandatory documentation of pedagogical (educational) work, on which the training of graduate students studying the cycle “Preclinical Experimental Research” is carried out, includes: a practical training program for applicants for the degree of candidate of medical sciences in the specialty 14.03.05 – “pharmacology”; the provision on attaching to the Department of Pharmacology approved by the Academic Council in order to master the mandatory program “222 – medicine, pharmacology”; thematic and calendar plans; independent work; list of additional literature; guidelines The laboratory staff, with the help of graduate students and doctoral students, have developed, improved and patented a number of methods for providing preclinical studies. Thus, the functioning of an educational research laboratory creates an optimal and rational scientific and practical basis for the preparation of a Ph.D. by mastering a post-graduate cycle of choice “Preclinical experimental research”, which was shown by the example of the functioning of the laboratory. In the future, it is appropriate and promising to develop a curriculum for English-speaking students, given the constant increase in their number among university entrants, and as a result — increase in the proportion of foreign citizens, among graduates and entering postgraduate study.

Translating global evidence into local practice: The Latin American experience

Latin America faces urgent challenges in education. In order to succeed, it must tackle insufficient and unequal learning outcomes, low teacher quality, and inadequate public funding, among other problems. Making good use of global evidence is key to reduce these educational gaps in a shorter time span. Moreover, academic research should drive innovations that can make an efficient and effective use of scarce public resources. In this context, 10 Ministries of Education and the Inter-American Development Bank founded SUMMA, the first regional Education Research and Innovation Laboratory for Latin America and the Caribbean. SUMMA aims to synthesize global evidence, contextualizing it to the local context; to generate relevant research, through research networks; and to promote its dissemination and use by governments, schools and teachers. This presentation will present the main achievements and also the main challenges in the quest to transform global evidence into local practices.

Особливості застосування екстракту алое у технології культивування герпесвірусів

In the article there are studied peculiarities of aloe extract application in the cultivation technology of herpes viruses on the re-cultivating culture of testicular piglets cells. We were faced with the following tasks: to select a cell culture and aloe extract concentration to determine the toxic dose of the drug; to study the manifestation of the cytopathic effect in cell cultures infected with herpesvirus at different drug concentrations ; to determine infectious virus activity after its passage on the cells culture with the use of aloe extract. The work was carried out at the faculty of veterinary medicine, in the educational-research laboratory of epizootology department of microbiology, pharmacology and epizootology of the Zhytomyr National Agroecological University. The research materials included: the re-cultivating culture of testicular piglets, horse herpes virus of the first type and sterile aloe extract. Cultivation of crops, infection with the virus and determination of its concentration after contact with culture and the introduction of aloe extract were carried out under sterile conditions according to the generally accepted methods. The results were recorded daily, paying attention to the environment color changing, the integrity of the monolayer and the presence of cells in the medium. Along with the infected cells we were observing additional, uninfected, cultures of cells. The Incubation process was stopped at the destruction of 90-100% cell monolayer. As a result of this work, it is proved that the aloe extract in a dose of 0.14-0.28 mg per cm³ of growth medium allows to observe for the 2nd day of replanting a solid dense monolayer in the mattress without color changing , as well as enhanced growth and regeneration of cells and the metabolism of the epithelial tissue of the re-cultivating culture of testicular piglets, which makes it possible to shorten the time to grow a new monolayer for further virological and immunological studies. The use of this drug helps to increase cells concentration in the mattresses, which, in turn, can increase the concentration of the virus to 1-2 log2 for the use of similar amounts of growth medium without aloe extract. Such modified way to increase the biomass of cells is suitable for the further multiplication of viruses and the production of diagnostic antigens with lower economic costs. The use of this methodical approach will allow to solve a number of tasks related with accumulation of viruses and the production of drugs for the diagnosis and prevention of viral infections.

Out from the PLATO cave: uncovering the pre-Internet history of social computing

ABSTRACTPLATO was a pioneering educational computer platform developed at the Computer-based Education Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the 1960s and 1970s. It quickly evolved into a communication system used for educational purposes, and also for social interaction (message boards, real-time messaging), collaboration and online gaming. The PLATO system was one of several precursors to today's Internet, but it has been little studied. It illustrates the value of the study of Internet histories and pre-histories (insofar as PLATO and other computer-mediated communication infrastructures like it predated Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), particularly as those histories entail rhetorical discursive elements regarding technical resources, social values and ethical norms that continue to shape the development of Internet technologies.

An empirical study on cloud computing requirements for better mobile learning services

Information technology and its applications change not only the way students learn but also how they are taught. M-learning provides many advantages to our education system. Cloud computing is the new technology that has started to be widely adopted for use with several applications by many education providers. A number of issues that have delayed the complete adoption of M-learning applications through cloud computing services still need to be solved. This paper defines an appropriate set of requirements, i.e. availability, quick response, flexibility and ease of use, long-term storage, elasticity and scalability, integrity, privacy and confidentiality and the control of information flow. The dimensions of these requirements are tailored to criteria developed from the literature study, standards for software quality and their guidelines. The paper then highlights the level of importance of each defined requirement for higher educational institutions, training centres, research laboratories, infant and junior schools.

Arizona Telemedicine Program Interprofessional Learning Center: Facility design and curriculum development

The Institute for Advanced Telemedicine and Telehealth (i.e., T-Health Institute), a division of the state-wide Arizona Telemedicine Program (ATP), specializes in the creation of innovative health care education programs. This paper describes a first-of-a-kind video amphitheater specifically designed to promote communication within heterogeneous student groups training in the various health care professions. The amphitheater has an audio-video system that facilitates the assembly of ad hoc “in-the-room” electronic interdisciplinary student groups. Off-site faculty members and students can be inserted into groups by video conferencing. When fully implemented, every student will have a personal video camera trained on them, a head phone/microphone, and a personal voice channel. A command and control system will manage the video inputs of the individual participant's head-and-shoulder video images. An audio mixer will manage the separate voice channels of the individual participants and mix them into individual group-specific voice channels for use by the groups' participants. The audio-video system facilitates the easy reconfiguration of the interprofessional electronic groups, viewed on the video wall, without the individual participants in the electronic groups leaving their seats. The amphitheater will serve as a classroom as well as a unique education research laboratory.

Internet Resources Available to Otolaryngologists

During recent years, the Internet has evolved into the largest computer network in the world, allowing access to vast amounts of information and services. Medical information is increasingly available to both patients and professionals, and ever more biomedical resources are becoming available on-line to assist in research, clinical medicine, and education. The Internet has always provided useful resources to otolaryngologists, implemented at various academic departments and national organizations or by specialists or specific medical web sites offering technical, scientific, and biomedical information. The purpose of this article is to provide as complete a list as possible of the World Wide Web sites accessible through the Internet that are of interest to otolaryngologists. It summarizes different types of resources available, including educational material, audiology sites, outcomes research, discussion lists, research laboratories, publications, medical libraries, news and medical conferences, organizations, academic departments, otolaryngological and medical resources, medical and surgical equipment and suppliers, and miscellaneous other sites of interest to otolaryngologists. This review is intended to present the wealth of the accessible information on the Internet and to promote the use of the network to otolaryngologists who do not have extensive experience in computers or telecommunications.

Postexercise oxygen consumption and substrate use after resistance exercise in women.

This study investigated the acute effects of 45 min of resistance exercise (RE) on excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) and substrate oxidation 120 min after exercise in moderately trained women. Ten RE trained women (age = 29 +/- 3 yr; ht = 168 +/- 8.3 cm; wt = 59 +/- 5.7 kg; VO2max = 38.3 +/- 4.7 mL.kg-1.min-1) underwent two trials: control sitting and RE. Subjects acted as their own controls in a random counterbalanced design. A 2-d nonexercise period was established between testing trials. Oxygen consumption (VO2) and respiratory exchange ratio (RER) were measured continuously by indirect calorimetry before, during, and after exercise and on a separate control day. RE consisted of 3 sets of 10 exercises at 10-repetition maximum with a 1-min rest period between each set. Fingertip samples of blood lactate concentration [BL] were collected immediately postexercise and every 30 min thereafter until [BL] returned to resting baseline values after exercise. The overall 2-h EPOC was 6.2-L (RE = 33.4 +/- 5.1 L vs control = 27.2 +/- 0.3 L), corresponding to an 18.6% elevation over the control period. RER was significantly (P < 0.01) below the control RER from minute 30 to minute 120 postexercise (RE = 0.75 +/- 0.01 vs control = 0.85 +/- 0.01). During the last 30 min of recovery, VO2 and [BL] had returned to control/baseline values and fat oxidation was significantly (P < 0.0001) higher (29.2 vs 16.3 kcal) after RE compared with the control trial. These data indicate that in young RE trained women, acute RE produces a modest increase in VO2 during a 2-h recovery period and an increase in fat oxidation.

Assessment of Individual Differences in Preferences for Holistic-Analytic Strategies: Evaluation of Some Commonly Available Instruments

Recently, it has become more acceptable to assume two different types of cognitive processes: analytic, rule-based, and sequential versus holistic, episode-based, or simply "nonanalytic." Results of both educational research and cognitive laboratory research suggest the presence of a holistic-analytic continuum of individual differences in cognitive functioning. The present investigation was designed to compare several potential measures of the holistic-analytic dimension. Evidence for construct validity comes from the convergence of measures that should theoretically assess the holistic-analytic dimension (i.e., sensing, intuiting, judging, and perceiving on Myers-Briggs Type Indicator; the left and right hemispheric preferences of the Human Information Processing Survey; and the Fact Retention, Methodical Study, Holist and Serialist scales of the Inventory of Learning Processes). Construct validity of the holist-analytic dimension was also supported by the divergence of measures assessing a dimension theoretically unrelated to the holistic-analytic construct (i.e., the introversion extraversion scales of the Myers-Briggs and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire). Additional findings revealed a relationship between the Deep and Elaborative Processing scales of the Inventory of Learning Processes and the Integrated scale of the Human Information Processing Survey.
