Ecotourism proposal for the Las Ventanas property of the Mineral del Chico National Park in Hidalgo, Mexico

Alternative ecotourism contributes to the care and preservation of a nation's natural and cultural heritage and constitutes a response to the growing and constant environmental degradation of many sites and their attractions. The objective of this proposal is to elaborate an ecotourism project as a means to take advantage of the available unused resources, according to the geographical and productive characteristics of the site, based on the principles of sustainability, as an economic alternative to the owners of the site for the generation of income and improvement of their quality of life. The proposal presents a methodology that can be reproduced for the design and implementation of an ecotourism plan and is an alternative for the diversification of activities in the rural sector. The economic-financial evaluation of projects determines the main indicators of Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return, Benefit-Cost Ratio and Payback Period of the investment. The results indicate that the ecotourism model is economically and financially acceptable for the main indicators calculated at a discount rate of 15% over a 5-year investment recovery period.

Efforts to Increase Community Participation in Supporting The Continuity of Ecotourism Development Policies

This research aims to identify strategies that enhance community participation in supporting the sustainability of ecotourism development policies. The study specifically explores how local communities can be involved in decision-making, implementation, benefit-sharing, and evaluation activities within ecotourism projects. The methodology used is a qualitative literature review, drawing on secondary data from sources such as journal articles, theses, government reports, and books relevant to community engagement and ecotourism. The results indicate that active community participation significantly improves the sustainability and success of ecotourism projects. By engaging local communities, ecotourism not only promotes environmental and cultural conservation but also brings economic benefits, such as job creation and income growth for local populations. In particular, the involvement of communities in planning and policy evaluation is essential for aligning ecotourism initiatives with local needs. The conclusion emphasizes that fostering community involvement through education and training is critical for empowering communities and ensuring the long-term sustainability of ecotourism projects. Community Participation in Ecotourism Project Development: In Wof-Washa National Priority Forest Area

The study focused on investigations of community participation in ecotourism development in Wof-Washa National Priority Forest Areas, using a descriptive design with mixed approach through cross-sectional survey. The study utilized systematic, stratified, and purposeful sampling methods. It also used thematic analysis for qualitative data collected through interviews, and descriptive statistics for quantitative data gathered via questionnaires. Document reviews were used to triangulated this study result with previous findings. The study findings reveal that the current status of community involvement in ecotourism development lean toward degree of tokenism (moderate level), with limited roles, as Arnstein's model, at all stages. Generally, without the participation of community, the development of ecotourism project couldn’t be possible. The researcher suggests that collaborative efforts among all relevant stakeholders are crucial to fostering community participation in the successful implementation of the ecotourism project in Wof-Washa National Priority Forest Area.

Water quality and phytoplankton structure and functional classification in Tadlac Lake, Philippines

Abstract. Rodil MSP, Banaag C, Velasco EJT, Elazegui EP. 2024. Water quality and phytoplankton structure and functional classification in Tadlac Lake, Philippines. Biodiversitas 25: 2769-2782. Following the ban on aquaculture enforced from December 1999 to February 2000, the local government of Tadlac Lake, Philippines, is currently developing ecotourism projects in the lake. This necessitates the assessment of water quality and phytoplankton to ensure the sustainability of the lake, supporting both ecological preservation and visitor satisfaction. This present study unveils the current ecological condition of Tadlac Lake, while advancing knowledge of phytoplankton's responses to different environmental conditions and adaptation mechanisms through their functional classifications. Our study revealed that except for phosphate during the dry period, water quality parameters adhered to the standards for class C waters. Phytoplankton species are grouped into Phaeophyta, Cyanobacteria, and Chlorophyta. Bacillariophyceae was the most dominant class with 15 species. The persistent presence of Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Synedra affinis, Synedra tabulata, Achnanthes lanceolata, Navicula placentula, Neidium affine, Synechocystis aquatilis, Oscillatoria limosa, and Chlorococcum humicola indicate that the lake's recovery from past deterioration remains incomplete. Shannon-Weiner and Pielou evenness index suggested that the lake exhibits a state of light pollution. The Wilcoxon signed rank test reveals significant seasonal variations in environmental factors, including temperature, total dissolved solids, salinity, electrical conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen, phosphates, and total coliform counts, which directly impact the structure and functional classification of phytoplankton communities. Spearman correlation coefficients and canonical correspondence analysis further establish significant correlations between individual phytoplankton species and these environmental parameters, providing additional evidence. The results emphasize the need for seasonally tailored environmental management strategies.

The Potential Role of Ecotourism in Sustainable Development: A Systematic Review

This study aims to establish the relationship between sustainable development and ecotourism and showcase how ecotourism can contribute to sustainable development. Result from systematic review revealed that community access to ecotourism opportunities is limited, thereby limiting its contribution to sustainable development. The study concludes that for ecotourism to contribute to sustainable development in local communities, there is a need to reduce social inequality and motivate local community members to contribute to the protection of the local environment and culture. The implications are that ecotourism initiatives can benefit local communities if they are involved in the planning, execution, and control of ecotourism projects.

Community-based Ecotourism in Protected Areas towards Inclusive Development-An Evidence of Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary of India

Community-based ecotourism (CBET) is one of the tourism segments used to protect the natural environment by the host communities in many countries; however, empirical studies involving active involvement, understanding, and level of satisfaction of the community and tourists in various ecotourism projects are still scarce in the context of developing countries. Thus, this study empirically examines the potential of community-based ecotourism in and around the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary (BKWS) from the perspectives of the community and tourists in Odisha, India. Primary data were collected through a structured questionnaire prepared based on an expert view. In this study, both descriptive and exploratory research designs were considered the most appropriate. A total of 470 respondents participated in this study. Cronbach’s α was used to ensure reliability and validity of the instrument used for the survey. Data analysis was performed using SPSS 23.0. Collected data were tested for outliers using stem and leaf chart analysis, and all data were normally distributed for further analysis. Finally, a clear picture of the study was drawn based on the analysis and interpretation. The ANOVA (F-test) results demonstrated that community-based ecotourism was quite significant for inclusive development and conservation practices, as supported by all five statistically significant explanatory factors. The one-way ANOVA test for Hypothesis 1 found that community-based eco-tourism can be leveraged as a unique selling point (USP) to boost tourism in Odisha. Furthermore, one-way ANOVA was used to test the second hypothesis, which demonstrated that community-based ecotourism raises awareness within the local population about the importance of protecting Odisha's tourism resources. Similarly, the t-test results demonstrated that tourists and communities do not differ significantly in terms of satisfaction with event settings, art and craft, performance, infrastructure, guide services, and information. The findings of the study revealed that CBET was a major tool for promoting Odisha Tourism and creating awareness among the local community for the conservation of protected areas to embrace sustainability. Practical implications have been suggested for policy improvement in Odisha Tourism.

Determination of Recreatıon Areas in Acarlar Longoz

The protection of nature and the environment, the preservation of the diversity of ecosystems without jeopardizing their integrity, and their sustainable development are important for sustainability. The Acarlar Floodplain is an extraordinary tourism and recreation area in terms of its ecological and landscape features. In the Acarlar Floodplain, which has recently become an important tourist destination, it is important to determine the attractions for daily recreation without neglecting the conservation value. The aim of this study is to identify suitable areas for hiking and birdwatching in the region using the weighted overlay method. The results show that most of the region is restricted areas for targeted activities, especially birdwatching, due to the different conservation status of Acar Longoz. The 1st degree suitable areas for hiking activities cover 226 ha and 4169 ha fall under the 2nd degree suitable category. The 1st degree suitable areas for birdwatching cover 16 ha, while the 2nd degree suitable areas cover 487 ha. The results provide essential inputs and an exemplary scientific methodology for the development of the current ecotourism project and wetland management plans.

The tourism industry currently contributes to 10.3% of the global GDP, highlighting its substantial role in the economy. All ecotourism projects typically commence in the city, serving as the primary base for tourists and the starting point for their recreational activities. Specific strategies for placing monuments in city settings are designed to enhance psychological and emotional well-being. It is essential for them to become part of the public space system and serve as a crucial element, fulfilling the role of enhancing the urban environment with an aesthetic aspect. This study explores the placement of several sculptures within the open public areas of the Armenian cities.

An ecotourism suitability index for a world heritage city using GIS-multi criteria decision analysis techniques

The concept of ecotourism has experienced a significant surge in popularity over the past two decades, primarily driven by the multitude of adverse impacts associated with mass tourism. The objective of the study was to develop a comprehensive ecotourism suitability index to guide policymakers in implementing tourism development policies. Given the considerable appeal of the study area to both local and international tourists, it is essential to conduct a systematic evaluation to pinpoint suitable areas for ecotourism development. This necessity arises from the study area's placement within a fragile ecosystem and its proximity to a UNESCO World Heritage site. We employed a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) integrated environment coupled with a fuzzy Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) methodology. The GIS-MCDA integrated framework leverages the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and a weighted linear combination that seeks to amalgamate many features and criteria to assess ecotourism potential by integrating 20 criteria into six separate categories: landscape, topography, accessibility, climate, forest and wildlife, and negative factors. Weights were allocated to each criterion and factor based on the expert's opinions of their impact on the development of ecotourism. The final ecotourism suitability index comprised five unique classes: very high, high, moderate, less, and not suitable. Results reveal that out of the total areas, 45.4 % (259 km2) are within the high and very high suitable classes. The sensitivity analysis suggested that ecotourism potentials are more favorable to forest and accessibility variables. The generated index can be utilized as a road map since validation verified a 64 % accuracy. Given the dearth of earlier research, this study provides vital support for the development of sustainable ecotourism projects in the study area.

A critical review of the socio-cultural, economic and environmental impacts of ecotourism in Ghana

ABSTRACT This study aims to critically review the impacts of ecotourism in Ghana by synthesising the socio-cultural, economic, and environmental impacts of ecotourism. It relied on databases including Web of Science, EBSCO host, Scopus, Science Direct, Emerald, Google Scholar, University libraries as well as government institutions and personal contacts to gather 23 relevant published papers and nine policy documents and strategic plans for the review. The study found that whereas there are several studies on the positive socio-cultural, economic, and environmental impacts of ecotourism, the absence of quantitative analysis to monitor changes in biodiversity in terms of species population and distribution and economic returns to make an economic case for private sector investment are critical gaps. Advancing research on ecotourism and SDG interlinkages can provide directions for policy choices on maximising synergies and minimising trade-offs. The findings suggest that sustainable financing through public-private partnerships is necessary for catalysing positive sustainability outcomes of ecotourism projects.

The Role of Ecotourism in Reducing Poverty and Unemployment: A Mixed Method Approach

Ecotourism is perceived as a promising initiative capable of poverty alleviation and job creation. This study investigated whether ecotourism helps to alleviate poverty and unemployment in relatively underdeveloped areas such as the UMkhanyakude district municipality. The study used a parallel, convergent research design comprising qualitative and quantitative research applications. Both random and purposive sampling techniques were used to select a sample of 204. In selecting respondents for the quantitative dimension, two types of databases obtained from each of the local municipalities were used. The first database comprised community registers, and the second included a list of companies registered with the municipality’s supply chain or procurement unit. Specifically, the criteria used to select participants included expertise, understanding of ecotourism programme implementation processes, skills, and proximity to ecotourism projects. Four (n = 4) officials and four (n = 4) program managers, for a total of eight, were selected from each of the four local municipalities. This resulted in a combined purposive sample of 32 participants (8 x 4 = 32) for the interviews. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was employed to analyse quantitative data. The qualitative data were processed through the ATLAS TI application. From the results, it can be deduced that, to a greater extent, ecotourism is contributing towards the reduction of poverty and unemployment in UMkhanyakude District Municipality. Based on the results, it can be concluded that ecotourism has the potential to reduce poverty and unemployment in rural communities in line with the dimensions of sustainable development goals. Benchmarking activities that focus on community roles and responsibilities, awareness-building strategies at the community level, stakeholder consultation and involvement, and capacity-building programmes are recommended.

Marginalisation of women and the predicaments of community-led ecotourism projects in the Chilika Lagoon, India

ABSTRACT Studies on women in ecotourism can be classified into two categories. First, women become empowered by participating in community-based ecotourism. Second, such projects continue to push women into gender-specific roles. Drawing from a qualitative study on community-based ecotourism projects in the Chilika Lagoon, this paper argues for a third category. Here, within the rubric of sanskritisation – social mobility and cultural factors associated with patriarchy – women are excluded from working in community-based ecotourism projects. Instead, they need to become "good wives" to uphold the community’s izzat (honour) and samskruti (culture) by dissociating themselves from "indecent" works like engaging in the ecotourism projects in the lake. The paper concludes that articulating the embodiment of honour and culture with the framework of sanskritisation can help us broaden our understanding of developmental practices in rural India and explain complex interplays of caste and gender that prevent Dalit women from entering certain labour markets.

This methodology enables a comprehensive examination of ecotourism’s economic, environmental, and social impacts. The analysis focuses on key indicators such as income generation, job creation, environmental conservation efforts, and community involvement in ecotourism projects. Findings reveal that ecotourism significantly contributes to local economies, particularly in rural and remote areas, by providing sustainable livelihoods, enhancing local capacity, and fostering entrepreneurship. Additionally, ecotourism initiatives have been instrumental in promoting environmental conservation through community-based projects, wildlife protection, and habitat preservation efforts. Importantly, the study highlights the critical role of policy frameworks and stakeholder collaboration in maximizing the benefits of ecotourism. The significance of this research lies in its contribution to the understanding of ecotourism as a viable tool for sustainable economic development in developing countries, with Indonesia serving as a model. It offers valuable insights for policymakers, tourism developers, and conservationists seeking to balance economic development with environmental sustainability. By highlighting successful practices and identifying challenges, this study provides a roadmap for optimizing the benefits of ecotourism in Indonesia and similar contexts globally.

A novel group decision-making method for interval-valued q-rung dual hesitant fuzzy information using extended power average operator and Frank operations

This paper advances the field of multi-attribute group decision making (MAGDM) by proposing a novel framework based on interval-valued q-rung dual hesitant fuzzy sets (IVq-RDHFSs). IVq-RDHFSs, which surpass most existing fuzzy sets, effectively represent complex fuzzy information by describing membership and non-membership degrees through interval value sets. However, prior MAGDM methods based on IVq-RDHFSs have been limited by the functions of operation rules and aggregation operators (AOs). This limitation is addressed through the construction of a new MAGDM framework, leveraging the robust Frank t-norm and t-conorm (FTT) operation and the extended power average (EPA) operator. The proposed framework features the interval-valued q-rung dual hesitant fuzzy Frank weighted extended power average (IVq-RDHFFWEPA) operator to obtain comprehensive evaluation values. The paper also introduces novel techniques for determining the weights of decision-makers and attributes. Practical applications of the proposed method are demonstrated through the assessment of desalination technology selection and rural green eco-tourism projects. Sensitivity and comparison analyses validate the superior functionality, accuracy, and flexibility of this method compared to many state-of-the-art methods. The contributions of this paper are two-fold: it develops efficient measurement techniques for IVq-RDHFSs, such as distance and weight calculation, and it introduces a comprehensive MAGDM method by integrating FTT and EPA under IVq-RDHFSs, which improves the efficiency of solving decision-making problems.

The article examines modern approaches to ecological tourism as a complex management system, which includes environmental educational and educational activities among participants. The main task of this model is to achieve economic goals while simultaneously preserving nature and cultural values for future generations. The article examines how economic, environmental, social and political aspects have contributed to the rapid progress of ecotourism. It was discussed how ecotourism can become a means not only for economic growth, but also for the preservation of the ecosystem and cultural heritage. Much attention is paid to the importance of applying the latest management approaches, infrastructure development and conducting educational programs for communities. The importance of establishing ecological routes with proper information and safe infrastructure is highlighted, as well as the formation of clear rules for tourists. The role of monitoring and control over compliance with environmental norms for the adaptation of tourist activities is revealed. The importance of local population participation in ecotourism projects for economic development and raising environmental awareness is emphasized. Ecotourism is presented as a tool for the protection of nature and culture, while offering ways of social and economic progress. International experience in the field of ecotourism is also mentioned, showing its impact on local communities, regional economies and the environment. Based on this experience, recommendations are offered for adapting global best practices to local conditions to create a sustainable ecotourism environment. The conclusions call for an integrated approach to the development of ecotourism, which requires the joint actions of government, business, local communities and international organizations. The article emphasizes the importance of creating an effective ecotourism management system that provides a balance between the needs of tourists, environmental protection, and economic interests of regions. The need to involve the public and the private sector in the development and implementation of projects in the field of ecotourism is also emphasized.

Eco-tourism in Nepal

Eco-tourism involves visiting unique natural habitats with the purpose of aiding conservation efforts and observing wildlife. There are several benefits of eco-tourism which include the conservation of the environment, a rise in funding by the government, cultural exchange, and support for local businesses. The principal tourism activities in Nepal are mountain climbing, trekking, visiting religious and cultural sites, rafting, bungee jumping, rock climbing, jungle safari, and so on. Ecotourism in Nepal depends on coordinated policies, integrated conservation, and sustainable community development, requiring international and grassroots collaboration to maximize benefits while conserving natural beauty. Various projects have been organized to develop eco-tourism in Nepal. Some of the major projects that have been organized are Ghalegaon-Sikles Ecotourism Project, Annapurna Conservation Area Project, Kanchenjunga Community Based Ecotourism Project, Manaslu Nature Based Ecotourism Project and Upper Mustang Biodiversity Conservation Project.
