The Synergistic Structure and Potential Development for Sustainable Ecosystem Services in Urban Areas along the Grand Canal: A Case Study of the Wuxi Segment

The Grand Canal possesses a unique ecosystem as one of the world cultural heritage sites. However, its ecological roles and services have been underemphasized in heritage conservation efforts, leading to environmental pollution and the degradation of its heritage value, especially in the highly urbanized southern Jiangsu section downstream. This study examines the synergy between regulating ecosystem services (RESs) and cultural ecosystem services (CESs) along the highly urbanized Wuxi section of the Grand Canal, as well as the environmental drivers influencing this relationship. The findings reveal that the synergy between CESs and RESs does not occur at the urban–rural interface but rather in areas 4-6 km away from the Central Business District (CBD). Certain drivers, such as floor area ratio (FAR) and plot ratio (PR), enhance both RES and CES within specific sections. Beyond riparian green belts, various low-density, dispersed, and well-vegetated lands could serve as significant contributors to future ecosystem service (ES) synergy. These conclusions further elucidate the spatial distribution of the heritage cultural services and other ES synergy along the Grand Canal, providing scientific support for broader improvements guiding the sustainable co-development in similar urbanized areas.

Justice in access to urban ecosystem services: A critical review of the literature

Ecosystem services are crucial for urban resilience, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and sustainable development. Incorporating these services in urban environments involves various principles, partnerships, organizational strategies, and methodologies. A vast body of research exists on ecosystem services. However, there is a lack of studies that address equity concerns in access to urban ecosystem services. This paper critically reviews the literature to investigate the state of access to ecosystem services in urban areas. We use deductive content analysis for this purpose. We explore traditional concepts of justice and update them by examining the sources and types of ecosystem services in urban environments. We examine justice typology considering various social, environmental, infrastructural, ecological, and mobility issues. We also explore different justice dimensions, including distributional, procedural, recognitional, and restorative issues. Results showed a notable prioritization of green infrastructures (73%) over blue infrastructures (5%). Furthermore, there has been an apparent emphasis on cultural services (42%) and regulating services (25%) in offering recreational activities, fostering social integration, improving place-making capabilities, showcasing adaptability, and demonstrating resilience. An important finding is that most of the publications (87%) highlight that there is no justice in access to ecosystem services. Regarding typologies, we found that there has been more attention to environmental justice, and infrastructural, ecological, and mobility justice are underexplored. As for dimensions, more attention has been paid to distributional and recognitional justice at the cost of restorative justice. A key shortcoming is that cities in the Global South are not adequately represented in the literature, despite their significance for achieving sustainable urban development in the coming decades.

Merging multiple sensing platforms and deep learning empowers individual tree mapping and species detection at the city scale

The precise estimation of the number of trees, their individual tree locations, along with species information, is crucial for enhancing ecosystem services in urban areas. Previous studies largely used satellite or airborne images for mapping trees, but they were insufficient to generate a large number of species distributions. Ground-level data also led to inaccurate positional information of individual trees, although they provided reliable species detection results. In this study, we propose a novel framework that fully explores the complementary strengths of air- and ground-level sensing platforms by leveraging various deep neural networks to generate a detailed tree maps at a city-wide scale. Our strategy includes individual tree mapping and tree species detection using three-color channel images acquired from multiple sensing platforms. Through publicly available airborne imagery, we estimate the presence of over 1.2 million trees in Suwon city of South Korea spanning 121.04 km2 (R2 of 0.95 and relative bias of −1.9 %), achieving more accurate individual tree positions (positional uncertainty around 2.0 m) than conventional methods. Our comprehensive experiments also demonstrate the effectiveness of utilizing tree bark photos and street-level imagery taken by citizens and vehicles to identify urban tree species, with accuracy rates of over 80 % for citizen-sensed tree species maps and 66 % for vehicle-sensed tree species map. Along with the proliferation of web-based airborne images, the widespread use of smartphones, and the advancements in vehicle-mounted sensors, this study can facilitate efficient and accurate management of urban trees across scales. How do urbanization and alien species affect the plant taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity in different types of urban green areas?

Human pressure on urban landscapes has serious consequences for urban plant species. Therefore, environmental and anthropogenic factors affect the assembly of urban wildlife in plant communities. For biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services in urban areas, it is crucial to understand the impacts of urbanization as well as the introduction of alien plant species on urban plant communities. On 47 sites in Poznań (W Poland), we studied variation within and between three management greenery habitats, i.e., urban parks, greenery associated with housing estates, and urban grasslands, as they relate to taxonomical, functional, and phylogenetic alpha and beta diversity. We also examined how urbanization (measured by ISA) and alien plant species relate to vegetation compositional differences. We found that both urbanization and alien plant species cover decreased alpha diversity, while urbanization had various impacts on beta diversity within each studied habitat. Our results suggest that human pressure leads to similarities in the urban flora, where plant species with specific functional traits adapted to the urban environment. To achieve sustainable urbanization, urban planners should not only create diverse green spaces but also eliminate alien plants, increasing the role of urban land management in promoting the wildness of plant biodiversity in cities.

Dissecting ecosystem services distribution and inequality of typical cities in China

Conserving and restoring ecosystem services in urban areas is an efficient measure to deal with increasing ecological challenges for cities while enhancing urban ecological resilience. However, rising inequalities threaten to improve critical environmental justice, public health and urban ecological resilience. This study proposed a non-monetary framework for accounting for urban ecosystem services and explored the inequality of ecosystem services using the Gini coefficient. Further, a regression-based decomposition method was used to identify primary socioeconomic factors that contributed to inequality. The results showed that the total ecosystem service in the urban areas presented a trend of first growing rapidly and then fluctuating steadily from 6.78 × 1022 sej in 1985 to 1.14 × 1023 sej in 2020 the percentage of existing services in the total ecosystem services was over 50%. The Gini coefficient of 1985 was more extensive than that of other years, which is 0.461. The runoff regulation service and the temperature mitigation service were the primary contributors for the inequality. Meanwhile, such income per capita, nonfarm rate and industrial production provided over 70% contribution rate to the inequality. This study assessed the inequality of urban ecosystem services and analyzed the driving factors, emphasizing the importance of reducing inequality, and providing a specific reference basis and theoretical support for decision-makers in urban planning and development strategies.

Spatial heterogeneity of vegetation phenology caused by urbanization in China based on remote sensing

Vegetation phenology changes caused by urbanization could lead to shifts in ecosystem services in urban areas and impact on human health. The characteristics of urbanization affect vegetation phenology need to be emphasized, especially in China with a complex natural environment and rapid urbanization background. In this study, we used remote sensing-based phenological data (MODIS MCD12Q2) to analyze the spatial heterogeneity of vegetation phenology caused by urbanization between urban and non-urban areas in 320 cities across China. We found a significant difference between vegetation phenology in urban and its corresponding non-urban area at national and the regional scale. For national scale, the start of the growing season (SOS) was significantly advanced by 2.53 days (P < 0.001), and the end of the growing season (EOS) was significantly delayed by 6.72 days (P < 0.001), resulting in the growing season length (GSL) was significantly extended by 9.25 days (P < 0.001). For regional scale, the changes of SOS, EOS, and GSL caused by urbanization varied from seven vegetation zones in China. As expected for the Tropical monsoon rain forest and rain forest zone (TR) and Tibetan plateau alpine vegetation zone (TP), and Warm-temperate broadleaf deciduous forest zone (WTB), vegetation phenology in other four vegetation zones shows significant differences between urban and non-urban areas. Furthermore, the potential factors driving phenological changes through urbanization were discussed, which will be of great help in understanding the urban ecological process in future studies.

Estimating leaf area index and coverage of dominant vegetation on an extensive green roof in Syracuse, NY

Roofs with full or partial coverage of vegetation, also known as green roofs, are perceived to restore ecosystem services in urban areas. Research investigations have been carried out to evaluate green roof performance on reducing stormwater runoff, improving runoff water quality, decreasing urban heat island effects, and several other benefits. The leaf area index (LAI) or an estimate of vegetation coverage on a roof may aid in evaluating these benefits. This study evaluates the leaf area index and plant area index as well as spatial coverage of two dominant species of vegetation on a 5550 m2 extensive green roof in downtown Syracuse, NY. Stems with attached leaves within individual patches of Phedimus takesimensis and Sedum floriferum were picked to estimate leaf area index using geometric models, and a ceptometer was used to provide an approximate range of values for the plant area index (PAI). Patches were picked in the summer of 2020 when plants were flowering, but the surface area of the flowers was not included in measurements. Sizes were measured for 8522 leaves from four patches of Phedimus takesimensis and 7751 leaves from five patches of Sedum floriferum. The estimated LAI for a patch of Phedimus takesimensis is 4.97 +/- 0.52 cm2 leaf area cm−2 ground area, while the LAI for a patch of Sedum floriferum is 2.70 +/- 0.37 cm2 leaf area cm−2 ground area. Furthermore, 154 photos were taken in the fall of 2020 and late spring and summer of 2021, representing 7.1% of the roof area in several categories. Results show the following fractions of area: 0.226 (Phedimus takesimensis), 0.381 (Sedum floriferum), 0.074 (moss), 0.029 (other vegetation), and 0.290 (bare soil). Using a weighted average, the LAI of the entire area of this green roof is 4.03 cm2 leaf area cm−2 ground area if the other vegetation has an LAI of 0.92 cm2 leaf area cm−2 ground area and the moss has an LAI of 25 cm2 leaf area cm−2 ground area. Excluding moss from the weighted average, the LAI of the roof is 2.18 cm2 leaf area cm−2 ground area.

Characterization and Mapping of Public and Private Green Areas in the Municipality of Forlì (NE Italy) Using High-Resolution Images

Urban Green Spaces (UGS) contribute to the sustainable development of the urban ecosystem, positively impacting quality of life and providing ecosystem services and social benefits to inhabitants. For urban planning, mapping and quantification of UGS become crucial. So far, the contribution of private green spaces to ecosystem services in urban areas has yet to be studied. At the same time, in many Italian cities, they represent a considerable part of the urban green cover. This study utilises a methodological approach and provides insights into the contribution of urban public and private green spaces by the consideration of a case study area in Northeast Italy. To achieve this goal, the main steps were: (i) NDVI extraction from very high-resolution (20 cm) orthophotos, (ii) classification of property status and (iii) analysis of the degree of the greenness of land cover units. From our results, the total amount of the green spaces is 5.70 km2, of which 72.1% (4.11 km2) is private, and 28.9% (1.59 km2) is public. As for the land cover, three NDVI classes were identified, highlighting different degrees of homogeneity in NDVI reflectance response within each urban land cover unit. These results will support the planning of new green areas in the post-epidemic National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

A socio-ecological and geospatial approach for evaluation of ecosystem services to communities of the Eastern Himalayan Region, India.

Mountains are one of the most ecological functional areas and provide wide range of ecosystem services (ESs) to the adjoining people. However, the mountainous ESs are highly vulnerable due to land use and land cover (LULC) change and climate change. Therefore, evaluations of the nexus between ESs and mountainous communities are essentially required for policy purpose. This study aims to assess ESs by analyzing LULC focusing in three ecosystems (forest, agriculture, and home garden) from urban and peri-urban areas for last 3 decades, applying participatory and geospatial approaches for a mountainous city in Eastern Himalayan Region (EHR), India. The findings showed that a substantial loss in ESs has occurred during the period. Moreover, there were substantial variations of ecosystem importance and dependency between urban and peri-urban areas with highest importance of provisioning ESs in peri-urban areas and cultural ESs in urban areas. Moreover, among the three ecosystems, forests were strongly supporting the peri-urban areas communities. The result demonstrated that the communities are highly dependent on various ESs for their livelihoods, but the changes of LULC had substantial impact on the loss of ESs. Therefore, implementation of effective land uses planning strategies and measures for ecological security and livelihood sustainability is to be managed with people participation in mountainous areas.

An analysis of the co-benefits of the supply–demand for multiple ecosystem services for guiding sustainable urban development

It is widely acknowledged that synergetic supplies of multiple ecosystem services (ESs) can improve the efficiency of multifunctional landscape management. However, even though the satisfaction of demands for ESs clearly and comprehensively reflects their efficiency, little is known about the efficiency of co-benefits for multiple ESs when both the supply and demand sides are considered. For the first time, we analyzed the co-benefits of the supply of and demand for multiple ESs in urban areas according to the degrees of synergy found among five typical urban ESs. We found that although supplies of multiple ESs were synergetic, and the degrees of synergy of single ES supply–demand were positively correlated with each other, the co-benefits of supply–demand for multiple ESs were not substantial. We also found that the demand for ESs critically affects ES efficiency, which should therefore be assessed from the perspectives of both supply and demand. Any initiative that focuses on just one aspect cannot bring about genuine synergy; nor can it prompt the re-entry of the natural ecosystem in urban areas into a positive cycle. We elucidated the different patterns of synergy that foster a balance in the supply and demand of multiple ESs, which can provide a basis for their differentiation and for grouped management approaches to enhance the co-benefits of the supply of and demand for multiple ESs. Evidently, the supply side of ESs requires attention, especially the key aspect of ecological processes that affect the synergy of ES supplies. Consequently, an in-depth exploration of the key ecological process affecting ES supplies and their synergy is warranted in the future.

Mapping potential surpluses, deficits, and mismatches of ecosystem services supply and demand for urban areas

Land-use decision making in densely populated cities is challenged to cover the urban demand for water and food while maintaining the integrity of ecosystems that regulate the supply of these ecosystem services, beyond urban limits. Land-use decision making can be informed using spatial analysis of ecosystem services supply and demand, shedding light on potential mismatches, surpluses, deficits, and unsustainable uses of ecosystems. The integration of such analysis in land-use decision making, however, can be challenged by the complexity of the hierarchical and inflexible planning models used in various countries. We explored how the analysis of potential mismatches, surpluses, and deficits in the supply and demand of water and fertile soil can be spatially assessed for urban areas, and how such information can be used to inform land-use decision making. We used official data and geoprocessing methods to map water -supply, demand, and risk for water scarcity-, and fertile supply –supply, demand, and risk for food insecurity-, for Bogota and Villavicencio. We showed a high risk for water scarcity in Bogota, and an increasing competition for fertile soil between urbanization and agriculture. We recommended a cooperative management strategy of ecosystems and services considering that both cities shared river basins and natural reserves, in addition to their strike differences in population size. Inter-jurisdictional and inter-municipal cooperation, in addition to strong governance, are necessary to handle mismatches of urban ecosystem services supply and demand, and a potential solution to solve conflicts related to access, availability, and jurisdiction of ecosystem services in urban areas..

This study aimed to evaluate the awareness of conservation areas and green resources and analyze their characteristics by utilizing accumulated blog data created for specific places and objects. Among all the conservation areas and resources located in the Seoul metropolitan area, places that can be evaluated were classified, and sites were evaluated by dividing them into ten categories based on the number of blog posts written. As a result of the study, the users’ awareness of forests was the highest, and the awareness of conservation areas and green resources was higher in urban areas than suburban areas. The result shows that the conservation areas and green resources located around the metropolitan area serve as natural tourist destinations while being the object of conservation for users. In addition, these results are in the same vein as the research results in domestic and foreign studies on the importance of ecosystem services in urban areas. Unlike existing research methods, this study is meaningful in that it identified the level of user awareness through social media analysis and applied it to evaluating conservation areas and green resources. It can be used as basic data to prepare a management plan considering public interest and awareness or to establish a development plan to increase awareness. In addition, the cumulative amount of blog content used in the study is meaningful in that it can identify and monitor users’ interest in the space. However, it was not possible to examine the contents of each blog in detail because it was evaluated based on the amount of social media content. In addition, in the case of conservation areas and green resources, it is necessary to review and supplement the evaluation contents by adding keyword analysis and content analysis for the site to be evaluated as content other than the pure viewpoint of users may be mixed with development issues.

Enhancing pollination ecosystem service in urban green areas: An opportunity for the conservation of pollinators

The rapid growing urbanization is one of the main threats to urban biodiversity and the ecosystem services (ES) that they provide. Pollination is one of the most affected ES in urban areas mainly due to the decline in urban green areas (UGAs) and other factors derived from urbanization itself. Considering this and the already existing global pollinator crisis, the aim of this work is the evaluation of urban green infrastructure as an opportunity for pollinator conservation. For that purpose, the ornamental vegetation of a medium-sized Mediterranean city (Granada, south-eastern Spain) was determined. The floral origin, phenology and floral traits of the conforming species and the pollinator species that they attract were analysed. Additionally, NMDS analysis were performed in order to determine if the “Pollination Syndromes” are a useful tool to actually predict the pollinator group attracted to a certain plant species. It was found that UGAs have huge potential for pollinator conservation as the major part of its ornamental species have an entomophilic pollination strategy. However, there is an imbalance in the availability of flower resources throughout the year. Hence, the addition of species flowering out of the main flowering season would be advisable in order to get a continuous supply of floral resources for pollinators. A current disproportion in the potentially attracted pollinator groups was also found out, being bees the predominantly attracted ones. However, results showed that the “Pollination Syndromes” are a tool with limitations at the moment and needs to be used with considerations. Thus, the specific plant-pollinator relationship should be determined through field work in each case-study. Further studies considering key factors such as urban connectivity and fragmentation would be desirable to ensure a comprehensive management for urban pollinators.

LIFE-CLIVUT, ecosystem benefits of urban green areas: a pilot case study in Perugia (Italy)

Trees have a great value in terms of ecosystem services in urban areas. LIFE CLIVUT is an “Information and Governance” European project developed in 4 Mediterranean Cities, with the goal of increasing the knowledge and awareness of citizens, especially young people, on the importance of the presence and good management of urban trees to mitigate the “Heat Island” effects. The data collected on the value of tree heritage and their future potential are used to design a green asset management strategy that will help urban planners adopt better practices for the mitigation of the effects of climate change in urban environments. This paper illustrates the results of tree census activity in four urban green areas of Perugia, Central Italy, that will be compared with those recorded in others cities involved in the project. Dendrometric parameters (diameter at breast height, tree height, first branch height, max and min crown width, crown shape and density) were recorded in situ using a dedicated software operating through a web app (“Clivut-Treedb”). The following ecosystem services were estimated: CO2 sequestration, particulate matter (PM) absorption, shadow effect, biodiversity indexes. Several tree species characterized by important wood structures during their adult phase, such as Pinus pinea, Quercus ilex, Q. pubescens, Ulmus carpinifolia, Populus alba and Aesculus hippocastanum showed the highest estimates of CO2 stored. Q. ilex was the most efficient species in particulate adsorption, showing similar estimates (about 60 g PM10 tree-1 year-1) in the 3 oldest green areas established in the 1980s, while the youngest plantations (dating back to 2005) absorbed about 10 g tree-1 of PM10 per year. In terms of the potential cooling effect of trees, preliminary estimates of the shaded areas highlighted the difference between the older green areas (about 50% of shading) compared to the younger ones (about 15% and 8%).

Detecting the Complex Relationships and Driving Mechanisms of Key Ecosystem Services in the Central Urban Area Chongqing Municipality, China

Ecosystem services (ESs) are highly vulnerable to human activities. Understanding the relationships among multiple ESs and driving mechanisms are crucial for multi-objective management in complex social-ecological systems. The goals of this study are to quantitatively evaluate and identify ESs hotspots, explore the relationships among ESs and elucidate the driving mechanisms. Taking central urban area Chongqing municipality as the study area, biodiversity (BI), carbon fixation (CF), soil conservation (SC) and water conservation (WC) were evaluated based on the InVEST model and ESs hotspots were identified. The complex interactions among multiple ESs were determined by utilizing multiple methods: spearman correlation analysis, bivariate local spatial autocorrelation and K-means clustering. The linear or nonlinear relationships between ESs and drivers were discussed by generalized additive models (GAMs). The results showed that during 2000–2018, except for CF that exhibited no obvious change, all other ESs showed a decrease tendency. High ESs were clustered in mountains, while ESs in urban areas were lowest. At administrative districts scale, ESs were relatively higher in Beibei, Banan and Yubei, and drastically decreased in Jiangbei. Multiple ES hotspots demonstrated clear spatial heterogeneity, which were mainly composed of forestland and distributed in mountainous areas with high altitude and steep slope. The relationships between ES pairs were synergistic at the entire scale. However, at grid scale, the synergies were mainly concentrated in the high-high and low-low clusters, i.e., mountainous areas and urban central areas. Five ESs bundles presented the interactions among multiple ESs, which showed well correspondence with social-ecological conditions. GAMs indicated that forestland and grassland had positive impact on BI and CF. Additionally, SC was mainly determined by geomorphological factors, while WC were mainly influenced by precipitation. Furthermore, policy factors were confirmed to have a certain positive effect on ESs. This study provides credible references for ecosystem management and urban planning.

Urban tree management: Diversity of Tilia genus in streets and parks of Paris based on morphological and genetic characteristics

The development of tree inventories and open data bases provides green space managers a better understanding of tree morphological diversity in urban areas. However, studies on tree genetic diversity in cities remain rare.The aim of our study is to provide better knowledge on tree intra- and interspecific diversity to improve tree management in urban areas. We characterized 83 individuals of Tilia species and clones in streets and parks in Paris (France) based on both morphological characters (leaves, fruits and twigs) and genetic profiling by using nuclear microsatellite markers.We found five species through morphological identification: Tilia cordata, Tilia dasystyla, Tilia ×euchlora, Tilia ×europaea and Tilia platyphyllos. Analysis of genetic profiles allowed to distinguish three genetic groups correlated to T. cordata, T. ×euchlora and T. platyphyllos. Tilia ×euchlora had the largest number of the same clonal profile (20 individuals out of 36) in Paris while no clone was found in T. platyphyllos group.In some cases, clones were planted in the same street for aesthetic purposes. This can increase disease risk and diminish resilience to climate change. Knowledge on genetic variability between and within species is essential to hedge those risks and for evaluating individual responses to environmental conditions.Our study shows that production and purchasing practices by green space managers need new insights and that tree nurseries can play a crucial role in supplying trees with diverse genetics. Green space managers can reinforce diversity where possible in some areas (development of urban forests, greening of secondary streets or sidewalks, etc.) to improve ecosystem services in urban areas.

Local Society Perception on Ecosystem Services as an Adaptation Strategy in Urban Stream Recovery Programs in the City of São Paulo, Brazil.

Recent public policies in developing countries have emerged to address challenges of delivering water-related ecosystem services in urban areas. Some initiatives, such as the Brazilian Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change (BPACC) highlights sustainable urban drainage as a key strategy for promoting sustainable cities, including ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) measures. Despite the importance of these national guidelines, little is known about how the recommendations are incorporated and the provision of ecosystem services are perceived in local initiatives. We aim to explore stakeholders' perception of ecosystem services in relation to public urban programs for improving the local environment through EbA measures. For this, we studied a stream revitalization project in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, as an emblematic case by integrating three public programs: re-urbanization of irregular settlements, implementation of linear parks and cleansing of urban streams. Our methods involved literature review, documentary data, field surveys and semi-structured interviews with local populations, public agents, and NGOs. Despite some positive results of supplying ecosystem services, we recommend that local programs expand the scope of EbA measures based on BPACC guidelines, strengthen the specific objectives of the three individual public programs and better manage public resources, especially in the context of promoting resilient cities in developing countries. At the same time, local programs can teach lessons and show opportunities for improving national guidelines on climate change adaptation.

Green Infrastructures and the Consideration of Their Soil-Related Ecosystem Services in Urban Areas—A Systematic Literature Review

Although urban soils are strongly influenced by human activities, they provide a wide range of Ecosystem Services (ES) as long as they are not sealed off. This is a major sustainability issue as the loss of soil functions directly impacts ES and further on the possibility to adapt to the effects of the climate crisis. Green Infrastructure (GI) measures can be utilized to restore previously covered soil surfaces and compensate for lost soil functions. We conducted a systematic literature review to investigate the extent of peer-reviewed publications on GI measures in (peri-) urban areas covering soil-related ES. After identifying the relevant publications (n = 284), we generated an overview of the annual, spatial, and thematic distribution of the publications. Then, we employed an extended content analysis of the published focus topics to assess the representation of soil-related ES provided by GI. The content analysis revealed that the representation of soil-related ES in GI measures focused heavily on the contribution of soil to stormwater management. Detailed assessment of the interconnection of GI measures with key soil-related ES were missing. So far, the assessment of the loss of soil-related ES is not covered extensively in GI research publications.

Can urban public services and ecosystem services achieve positive synergies?

Over the past three decades, China has experienced rapid urbanization, and with the continuous increase in urbanization, urban public services have improved dramatically. However, many studies have found that urbanization damages the ecosystem, causing a decline in ecosystem services. Nevertheless, few studies have analyzed the spatial interaction between urban public services and ecosystem services. This study aims to determine whether urban public services and ecosystem services can achieve positive synergies. We quantified five critical ecosystem services, i.e., carbon sequestration and oxygen production (CSOP), habitat quality (HQ), water conservation (WC), PM2.5 removal (PR), and temperature reduction (TR), and five urban public services, i.e., education services (EDS), medical services (MS), living services (LS), social security services (SSS) and tourism facilities (TF). We found that a few win–win areas form in the center of Hangzhou city and that it is difficult to achieve positive synergies between urban public services and ecosystem services in urban areas without appropriate ecological conditions. In addition, we found thresholds of urban public services that can prevent a sharp decline in ecosystem services in the process of urban expansion. This research proposes an approach to spatial interaction analysis involving urban public services and ecosystem services and provides insights into the harmonious development of urban ecology.

Providing ecological, cultural and commercial services in an urban park: A travel cost–contingent behavior application in Finland

The need for monetary valuation of recreational ecosystem services in urban areas is greatly acknowledged in several contexts. Most often, studies provide a total value of recreational visits, but a separate contribution of ecosystem, cultural, and commercial services to the value of recreation in urban ecosystems is rarely provided. In this study, the recreational importance of an urban park including streams is assessed, and the welfare implications of planned future improvements in three types of service are revealed, i.e. the restoration of the reproductive brown trout population, an increased number of happenings or events, and the service of a cafeteria-restaurant. Travel cost and contingent behavior methods are combined, which has not previously been applied in such a context. The results show that people perceive the park’s importance for their well-being. The improvements of each service separately tended to increase the value between 14% and 21%, and of all services simultaneously by 66%. Remarkably, individuals with low incomes valued the park more than wealthier individuals. As the park is a free access environment, this suggests that the improvement of its recreational possibilities may especially benefit those with fewer opportunities for chargeable free time activities. Respondents’ awareness of the reconstruction and management project of the park and the streams tended to increase the number of visits to and value of the park. At the societal level, the stream restoration was found to be highly profitable.
