A systematic analysis of European markers of balanced environmental management under the conditions of economic circularity

The main task of the article is to research the role of balanced environmental management in the construction of a circular model of the European countries’ economy by using environmental and economic markers. It determines the level of environmental pollution and other environmental problems, including those caused by resource waste. It proposes a technological method of wastewater treatment from estrogen, microplastic particles and oil by using iron oxide. The rate of population for which secondary wastewater treatment is available and its importance for water efficiency under the conditions of significant water crisis in Europe was determined. The paper identifies the main indicators of economic losses of European countries that depend on climate change, because the weather anomalies have a significant impact on economic processes. It studies the dynamics of changes in the area of forested land according to FAO of the European G7 members, the current potential of forest resources of Ukraine and identifies the necessity of systematic electronic wood accounting. It is established that in the EU countries the practice of returning many types of raw materials to production after waste processing has long been accepted, and the need for the fastest possible introduction of innovative processing technologies is identified. Mathematical formulas for calculating the coefficient of cyclicality, circular use of materials and establishes the level of using cyclical materials by European manufacturers are derived. It is established that to identify the efficiency and dynamism of waste transformation, it is appropriate to use an indicator that measures the fraction of recycled household waste in the total volume of its generation. The article establishes the share of fossil fuels in the total available energy of European countries and analyses the dynamics of primary energy consumption based on the example of the Scandinavian countries. It identifies the level of revenues from environmental taxes in most European countries and their importance for the circular economy. It is recommended for Ukraine to study and use the experience of the European Union countries for construction its own model of circular economy based on the principles of balanced nature management and sustainable development.

Using the model of closed-loop economy in certain branches of the agro-industrial complex

From agricultural production to domestic consumption of products, the food industry produces huge amounts of waste every year, which leads to contamination of soil, water and air. Waste created upon processing agricultural raw materials and using axillary materials, such as additives, certain chemical components, fuel and so on, enhances an impact of the food chain on the environment leading to depletion of natural resources. In the last few years, production branches of economy, including the agro-industrial complex, have made attempts to maintain the balance between their impact on the environment, the use of resources, well-being of the population and economic benefits. This trend stimulates the intensive development of the theory of circular (cyclic) economy or closed-loop economy and facilitates a search for methods of its realization in the real economic system. The paper summarizes the main specific features typical of circular economy: strengthened control of supply of limited natural resources and maintenance of the stable balance of renewable resources; optimization of consumption processes by development and use of products, components and materials that correspond to the highest level of their reuse; detection and prevention of negative external effects of current production activities to increase efficiency of the economic and ecological systems. With that, despite the fact that the concept of circular economy was formulated several decades ago, its comprehensive definition is still a subject of discussions. Ambiguity of the existing definitions shows that the concept of closed-loop economy has different meaning for stakeholders. The paper examines several aspects of using elements of closed-loop economy in certain branches of the agro-industrial complex, including the meat industry. A special attention in this work is given to the introduction of modern technologies and equipment for efficient processing of waste from crop husbandry, animal husbandry and meat production to include it into the economic turnover. In addition, ecological problems arising in the course of activities of enterprises of the food and processing industries are examined and the possibilities of solving these problems by introduction of the model of circular economy have been established. Risks and barriers preventing transition of Russia to the model of circular economy have been revealed. The authors propose measures and directions of scientific research aimed at the development and introduction of elements of closed-loop economy in the meat sub-complex, including related branches of the agro-industrial complex.

The Configuration Path of the New Rural Collective Economy to Promote the Common Prosperity of Farmers: Based on Qualitative Comparative Analysis Method and the Rural Cases in Zhejiang, China

The new rural collective economy is an important external mechanism for promoting the common prosperity of Chinese farmers. At the same time, the livelihood capital of farmers provides an essential internal support. Achieving an effective match between the two elements is a significant research issue. This article, based on the survey data from 1024 rural households in 43 villages in Zhejiang Province, China, defines the economic functions, social functions, management functions, and cultural functions of the new rural collective economy. The study employs the qualitative comparative analysis method to explore the role of the new rural collective economy in the promotion of the common prosperity of rural households. The necessity analysis shows that the single-factor condition is not the necessary condition for the common prosperity of farmers. However, the adequacy analysis reveals that the linkage and match between the new rural collective economy and the farmers’ livelihood capital can create multiple equivalent pathways for the farmers’ common prosperity. These pathways include the economic function-driven model of the new rural collective economy, the driven model of the high-level livelihoods combined economic functions, the joint model of social function and management functions, the natural capital-driven model, and the joint model of human capital and social capital. Based on these findings, this article proposes targeted governance strategies, including creating pillar industries, strengthening public management services, expanding the scope of social services, and building a coordination mechanism between the new type of rural collective economy and farmers’ livelihood capital.

How digital economy index selection and model uncertainty will affect energy green transition

It remains unanswered if the existing findings in early studies are sensitive to the way of constructing the digital economy index, but this needs to be addressed to verify the effect of the energy green transition. Utilizing data from 30 Chinese provinces between 2013 and 2017, this empirical analysis is focused on four sustainable development topics (energy consumption, energy structure, energy efficiency, and green economy). The main findings include that (i) the choice of indexes affects the judgment of the relationship between the digital economy and green energy transformation, (ii) without an official index available, principal component analysis may become an optimization strategy to construct the digital economy index, and (iii) the optimized digital economy index verifies the positive role of digital economy in promoting green energy transition. This paper suggests that the actual effect of the digital economy on sustainable development can be more accurately identified through better construction of the digital economy index.

Carbon Footprint for Jeans’ Circular Economy Model Using Bagasse

To date, clothing has been produced and disposed of in large quantities. It is also known that each process, from the procurement of raw materials to production, transportation, sales, laundry, and disposal, has a significant environmental impact. According to the Global Fashion Agenda, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the fashion industry account for 4% of the global total. Therefore, apparel makers are shifting from a linear economy to a circular economy. For example, the Japanese start-up Curelabo Co., Ltd. (Okinawa, Japan) developed jeans (bagasse washi jeans) made from bagasse, which is a residual material derived from sugarcane after the extraction of cane juice. Furthermore, the use of improved dyeing reduces boiler fuel consumption and eliminates the need for detergents and acid. For disposal, the used jeans and their production waste are processed into biochar for carbon sequestration. In this study, we attempted to calculate GHG emissions using life cycle assessment (LCA) for the circular economy model developed by Curelabo Co., Ltd. GHG emissions from the production of bagasse washi jeans were 1.09 × 101 kg-CO2e. Dyeing, bleaching, and fabric finishing, known as the wet processes, were found to contribute a large proportion of GHG emissions due to their high energy consumption. Furthermore, the entire lifecycle of GHG emissions from bagasse washi jeans, including transport, sales, laundry, and disposal, were 1.53 × 101 kg-CO2e. First, the use of bagasse washi yarn for the weft reduced by 2.99 × 10−1 kg-CO2e compared with the use of conventional 100% bleached cotton yarn. Second, compared with conventional dyeing, GHG emissions from the improved dyeing process were reduced by 2.78 kg-CO2e. Third, the disposal of the used jeans and their production waste into biochar reduced GHG emissions by 9.01 × 10−1 kg-CO2e. Additionally, GHG emissions can be reduced by re-inputting waste in the paper-making process and by using liquefied natural gas as boiler fuel in the dyeing process.

The study offers a thorough review of current waste management techniques, environmental impact evaluations, and creative solutions influencing the path toward sustainability, bridging the gap between qualitative and quantitative analysis. The introduction sets the context by outlining the mutually beneficial relationship between the expansion of the textile industry and its subsequent environmental load. The clothing industry has gained prominence due to the increase in demand for its products, however, a paradigm shift is required due to the waste generated by this industry. The study aims to perform a thorough analysis of waste management processes, conduct a quantitative assessment of the environmental implications, and investigate comprehensive strategies for sustainable waste management. The chapter on qualitative analysis explores the complex aspects of waste management in the textile industries of India. This section explains the nuances of waste generation at different phases of textile production by carefully examining existing methods, case studies, and industry dynamics. A thorough grasp of the qualitative landscape is revealed, encompassing everything from yarn and fabric waste to the difficulties presented by chemical residues and the disposal of end-of-life textiles. The importance of awareness and corporate responsibility in influencing waste management methods is also highlighted in this section. Case studies of top textile producers present creative approaches and offer insights into the possibilities of technological developments, cooperative efforts, and models of the circular economy. Nonetheless, difficulties ranging from technology constraints to cultural obstacles highlight how difficult it is to smoothly integrate sustainable practices throughout the sector. The chapter on integration strategies looks at potential directions that could change the way waste is managed in the textile industry in India. Models of the circular economy take center stage because they provide a comprehensive approach to production and disposal. Case studies from real-world applications highlight the revolutionary potential of upcycling and sophisticated recycling technology, offering insights into how these strategies could lessen the industry's environmental impact. Co-processing in cement kilns is a two-pronged method that solves waste disposal issues and produces useful resources. The potential for improved trash sorting and identification is demonstrated by the combination of artificial intelligence and data analytics, opening the door to increased process efficiency in waste management. The study's conclusion emphasizes that although the study has been helpful, the search for India's sustainable textile waste management is still an ongoing project. The industry is at a turning point in its evolution, and the factors pushing it in that direction will be sustained research and innovation leading the way toward a time when environmental stewardship and economic prosperity coexist together. Circular Economy in The Agriculture Sector: A Case Study of West Kalimantan Province

This article explores the implementation of circular economy principles in the agricultural sector, with a focus on West Kalimantan Province. An example provided discusses the process of converting animal waste into organic fertilizer through a series of drying and granulation stages, highlighting the sustainable approach adopted by the 'Usaha Bersama' farmer group. By repurposing agricultural byproducts and waste, the circular economy model aims to reduce waste accumulation, minimize pollution, and enhance resource efficiency in agriculture. The study emphasizes the economic and environmental benefits of adopting circular economy practices, such as creating economic opportunities, improving soil health, and increasing crop yields in West Kalimantan. Through a case study approach, the article demonstrates how circular economy principles can be effectively applied to address both economic and environmental challenges in the agricultural sector.

Energy, exergy, exergoeconomic, economic, and environmental analyses and multi-objective optimization of a novel combined cooling and power system with dual-pressure Kalina cycle-absorption refrigeration

A novel combined cooling and power system, the dual-pressure Kalina cycle-absorption refrigeration (DPKC-AR-CCP), is proposed for the cascade utilization of waste heat from high-temperature flue gas and jacket water from internal combustion engines. A pneumatic booster pump unit is employed to increase the inlet pressure of the low-pressure expander, with heat generated during the compression process utilized for preheating the ammonia/water mixture, and exhaust gas from the low-pressure expander is combined with driving gas for absorption refrigeration. By integrating the first and second laws of thermodynamics with the SPECO Methodology, models for energy, exergy, exergoeconomy, economy, and environment of the DPKC-AR-CCP system are developed. A multi-objective optimization model is formulated with maximum exergy efficiency, minimum total exergy cost rate, and maximum annual equivalent carbon dioxide (CO2) emission reduction as objective functions. MATLAB software (combined with REFPROP software) is utilized for simulation and multi-objective optimization. The performance of each component under specific conditions is assessed, and a comparison with the simple absorption refrigeration/Kalina cogeneration system (AR/KC) highlights the advantages of the DPKC-AR-CCP system; an investigation into the effects of different operating parameters on performance is conducted. The results indicate that, under identical operational parameters, the DPKC-AR-CCP system exhibits a substantial increase in net output power (230.2 %), cooling capacity (98.7 %), and exergy efficiency (148.8 %) compared to the simple AR/KC system; payback period is reduced by 64.8 %; and annual equivalent CO2 emissions are decreased by 202.2 %. However, there is an increase in the total exergy cost rate by 90.5 %. The optimal concentration of ammonia/water is determined to be 0.816/0.184, with a heat exchanger outlet temperature of 341.07 K, driving pressure of 0.654 MPa, and low-pressure expander inlet pressure of 5.064 MPa. Correspondingly, the optimal exergy efficiency is 87.2 %, the annual reduction in CO2 emissions is 5.53 × 107 kg, and the total exergy cost rate is 288.48$/h.

Circular Economy Integration in 1G+2G Sugarcane Bioethanol Production: Application of Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage, Closed-Loop Systems, and Waste Valorization for Sustainability

Bioethanol production is a vital player in the renewable energy landscape. However, it faces pressing issues regarding carbon emissions and resource management. Traditional open-loop systems generate substantial waste and pollution, exacerbating environmental concerns. Various emerging technologies offer promising solutions. Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) presents avenues for tackling carbon emissions. Utilization transforms CO2 emissions into valuable products, while Storage securely stores emissions to prevent atmospheric release. Closed-loop processes and waste valorization capitalize on material reuse, conserving natural resources, and minimizing waste. By promoting resource efficiency and waste minimization, circular economy principles align seamlessly with CCUS, closed-loop systems, and waste valorization. This study delves into utilizing Utilization technologies tailored to sugarcane 1G+2G bioethanol production, evaluates CO2 capture options, and presents applications. Storage strategies suitable for bioethanol production facilities are scrutinized, and deployment options are explored, highlighting the closed-loop system and waste valorization's role in waste reduction and environmental preservation. Through synergistic integration, these technologies pave the way for sustainable sugarcane bioethanol production, addressing economic and technological challenges while fostering innovation and collaboration. This comprehensive study will serve as a guide for transitioning to a circular economy model in bioethanol production.

Analysing Circular Economy Policies and Initiatives in India and the Way Forward (Presence of Circular Policy Practices in India and the Road Ahead)

The circular economy model, the most recent solution in the drive to achieving sustainable development goals. The concept goes beyond the purview of pure economics and finds itself within the threads of state policy as well. The circular economy model refers to a system where goods live beyond their primary use to be recycled, reduced and prevented from becoming a pollutant. The model works on the principle of minimal yet efficient use of resources. Circular economy models have applications in a variety of fields: from water conservation and energy resources to waste management. This model however has inherent problems which are being observed and worked upon over time. Some of these problems are the systematic application of policy to the deficit in technological information. This paper focuses on various policies based on this model applied in India, their impact and challenges. India is committed to fulfilling Sustainable Development Goals in every aspect, therefore it is imperative to study the effect of the initiatives proposed and executed by the state. This paper touches upon policies such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, National Resource Efficiency Policy, Atal Innovation Mission, Financial Incentives, Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy Industry Coalition (G20 Initiative). This paper also tries to understand the challenges that are faced by the model, some of them include a lack of finance to develop infrastructure and develop production units, research to study more energy and cost-efficient systems and awareness that impacts consumer patterns that encourage sustainability-based commercial activities; and presents recommendations to resolve these challenges, awareness and global platforms are examples of the same. as well as conducts an introspection of policies implemented by other nations.

Open Innovation as Fuel for the Circular Economy: an Analysis of the Italian Context

In recent years the circular economy (CE) has gained considerable interest in the academic debate as a tool for achieving sustainable development. The implementation of the circular economy model requires innovation to overcome technological, economic, environmental, social, and regulatory barriers. However, companies do not always have the means to innovate due to lack of information, limited technical skills and financial constraints; as a result, innovation remains a fragmented phenomenon. Open Innovation (OI) is a tool identified in the literature as useful for overcoming this problem and thus for the development of the CE, as it accelerates the exchange of knowledge and the realisation of the necessary innovations. Despite this, the relationship between CE and OI, and particularly the influence of OI on CE, has been little investigated. In line with this, the paper aims to explore this relationship by analysing the process through which OI supports the development of the CE, focusing on the knowledge exchange aimed at circular innovation, and categorising the actors contributing to this process and their roles. The study adopts a qualitative approach and uses methods of descriptive analysis and case studies. The sample consists of 240 Italian circular organisations that support circularity in different ways. The results made it possible to classify the main actors involved and their contributions to the CE through OI practices, revealing unseen circular activities that support classical circular activities (slowing, closing, and narrowing of material and energy circuits) and are identified in services, technology or research. As a theoretical contribution, the research provides a framework describing the actions and relationships among the actors involved in the CE initiatives, with a focus on the Living Lab practices.

Platforms and trust as two columns of sharing economy

In the past two decades, economic models based on platform-based sharing, driven by the IT revolution, have caused a fundamental shift in traditional business practice, global capitalism, and societal values. The platform, along with all its features, has taken over the role of the organizational form since they have brought together strangers with under-utilized capacities and belongings, with those who need them without looking for ownership. The entire economic ecosystem - marketing techniques, business practices, supply chains, and consumption habits - has undergone a significant transformation. Consumer behavior is changing rapidly, and consumers are looking for appropriate and efficient access to goods and services through the Internet, without the financial, emotional, and logistical burdens of ownership. The radius of trust which was initially confined to family, friends, and local communities; now encompasses strangers who do not speak a common language and who are in different countries. Trust driven by Digital Identity (DI) and Trust and Reputation Information (TRI) have enabled what was considered unbelievable or even impossible some years ago. Further expansion and deepening of trust, based on new technologies combined with the international legal framework, has the potential to rewrite modern capitalism and societal values. This paper introduces the role of platforms in the evolution of the sharing economy, the role of trust in promoting such platforms, and the role of well-designed platforms in fostering and nurturing trust which is essential for promoting and sustaining sharing economy models.

The Role of Government in Transforming the Existing Transportation Paradigm: Based on the Historical Review of Chinese Sharing Transportation

As a representative of the sharing economy model, the shared mobility industry provides people with additional mobility options to make their lives more convenient and offers possible options for future urban transportation paradigms. However, transportation problems in cities are still serious, and the role of the government in developing shared mobility and changing the future urban transportation paradigm remains unclear. This paper mainly adopts the literature method, takes the shared mobility industry as the research object, puts forward the hypothesis of the future transportation paradigm, and explores how the government should promote the formation of this paradigm. This paper bridges the gap in research related to the shared mobility industry and, at the same time, provides a reference for the government to promote the development of shared mobility, facilitate the formation of a new paradigm, and alleviate urban transportation problems.

US international trade policy: Scenarios of protectionism and trade wars

US international trade policy under both the Trump and Biden administrations has been increasingly protectionist. This paper considers two policy scenarios under active discussion: (1) an across-the-board increase in all US tariffs by 10 percentage points, and (2) a severe escalation of the US trade war with China. The scenarios are analyzed using a multi-country computable general equilibrium (CGE) simulation model of the global economy. Trade wars or policy regimes of widespread protection will increase tariffs in many sectors simultaneously and include both final goods and intermediate inputs. The impacts are complex, with a web of direct and indirect forces coming into play across domestic and international markets. The global CGE model captures these mechanisms, including both short and long-run effects, with and without retaliation by partner countries. In a world economy where the US accounts for only 10 % of global trade and potentially rival trade bloc have emerged in Europe and E&SE Asia, the US is no longer hegemonic in global markets. We find that across-the-board tariffs do not protect manufacturing jobs because the cost of imported intermediate goods increases, raising costs in manufacturing production. The US trade war with China leads to a dramatic fall in bilateral trade. Other countries expand their trade to China and the US with the exception of closely linked partners (e.g. Canada and Mexico and all countries in E&SE Asia). We find that the world economy can adjust to US trade wars, diverting trade around the US.

Wage bargaining structure and political budget cycles: A policy game approach

Utilizing a panel dataset from OECD countries, this study unveils new evidence suggesting that the centralization of wage bargaining plays a significant role in mitigating Political Budget Cycles. To explain this empirical finding, the paper introduces a political economy model based on a policy game framework, encompassing three key agents: (i) an opportunistic government that decides on the level of budget deficits with the objective of enhancing its reelection prospects, (ii) workers/voters who decide on their sectoral affiliations, and (iii) unions that independently negotiate wages with firms. In this model, the opportunistic government has an incentive to run a budget deficit to favor the median voter, who is affiliated with non-tradable sectors. The mechanism emerges from the impact of debt-financed public spending on relative prices, and consequently, on relative wages between non-tradable and tradable sectors. Wage centralization mitigates the political incentive of opportunistic governments by attenuating the responsiveness of sectoral wages to sectoral prices, thereby pushing down budget deficits towards a socially more optimal level.

DIGITALLY DRIVEN MODEL OF A CLIMATE-NEUTRAL ECONOMY IN TERMS OF GLOBAL FINANCIAL CAPACITY

The article explores the conditions and drivers for the development of a climate-neutral economy model, emphasizing the pivotal role of digital transformation. A crucial lever in deploying this model is the proactive engagement of international financial entities within the realm of global green financing. The study highlights the instrumental role of green funds as key players in shaping global financial capacity and providing multilateral support for climate change adaptation worldwide. It delves into the overarching frameworks and mechanisms of such assistance. Employing a systematic analysis alongside case studies of the Green Climate Fund's projects, the authors aim to identify the most impactful sectors for cultivating a climate-neutral economy. The research identifies four essential segments for achieving climate neutrality: digitalization for climate, strengthening the financial capacity and business sustainability, rethinking ecosystem development, and community empowerment. The investigation draws on extensive data regarding the execution of 240 climate projects across major beneficiaries of climate finance in Eastern Europe, Africa, the Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. It shows that modern climate finance demonstrates signs of geopolitical dependency and polarization in global influence. The findings argue for bolstering the regional presence of climate funds to increase the financial capacity to implement climate-neutral projects at the local level. The article underscores the scale of financial support required across each segment, as well as the leading role of pre-project preparation. The authors substantiate the overarching and twofold role of digitalization in the model of a climate-neutral economy. The digital transformation produces a whole cluster of independent and versatile IT products for green businesses, industries and governance. On the other hand, digitalization creates an informational environment and a powerful digital infrastructure for better efficacy of other crucial segments. Specifically, it provides digital decisions for financial solvency and sustainability of green businesses in terms of green lending, grants and Fintech; strengthens information awareness and involvement of vulnerable communities in green economy processes; promotes digital support for overall ecosystem adaptation.

The Community Empowerment (PKM) activity carried out in Kaladawa Village is a creative economy training for youth organizations, aiming to apply a creative economy model so that youth youth organizations in Kaladawa village to create productive and creative people. This activity was held on Thursday, May 30, 2024, attended by 30 (thirty) participants consisting of the Village Head and his apparatus, Bumdes, Youth Organisation Youth and PKK women.

Harmonizing the BCG model with logic of curriculum and maxims of teaching for maximizing effective teaching-learning

The Bio-Circular Green Economy Model introduced by Thailand aims to create a sustainable, inclusive society, economy and environment, through application of science, technology and innovation, using Thailand’s comparative advantage in biological and cultural diversity into competitive advantage. The importance of BCG model encompasses every country that aims to thrive through a culture of equity, inclusion and sustainability. India being one such country which does have a comparative advantage of cultural and environmental diversity, there lies need to promote equity, inclusion, innovation, economic and cultural responsiveness in its society. Educational scenario in India had showcased teachers as entities who tend to control the students and pour knowledge into them. The primary goal of every teaching learning process is maximum outcome of learning which includes behaviour modification, and therefore the maxims of teaching are the general principles which guides every teacher to manage their classroom effectively, with maximum participation of learners, invocation of sustainability and inclusiveness, as well as self-motivated learning taking place. An effective teacher is a facilitator, who uses the maxims to maximize the learning outcome keeping the outcome in congruence with the BCG Model. National Education Policy 2020 has laid down various pedagogical strategies that suits the logic of the curriculum structure. The logic is based on psychological aspects of growth and development. Hence, this study aims at seeking a relation between BCG Model and logic of Curriculum Instruction to intensify the learning outcome through application of Maxims of Teaching within the classroom by adopting thematic analysis.
