Does the use of community childcare centres contribute to greater economic empowerment of rural women? A case study from Burkina-Faso

ABSTRACT Women devote much of their time to unpaid care work in West Africa. This situation is even more pronounced in rural areas and thus contributes to further weakening women’s economic empowerment in these areas. Setting up community childcare centres is one way of creating time for these women. This article therefore analyses the impact of the use of these centres on the economic empowerment of rural women in Burkina Faso, using the Conditional Mixed Process model. Data collected from 1546 rural households in 2022 as part of the implementation of a research project funded by the International Development Research Centre were used for the analyses. The investigations showed that the use of community childcare centres offers more opportunities for rural women to participate in economic activities or the labour market through the time saved as a result of the reduction in time spent on domestic chores. Revitalising and scaling up community childcare centres in Burkina Faso are, therefore, the main way of empowering rural women.

Income-Generating Activities and Economic Empowerment of Rural Women in the Mion District, Ghana: A Phenomenological Study

The economic empowerment of rural women is pivotal to sustainable development, particularly in areas where traditional gender roles and limited access to resources impede their economic participation. This phenomenological study investigates the lived experiences of rural women in the Mion District of Ghana, focusing on their engagement in income-generating activities (IGAs) and the associated challenges and opportunities. Employing qualitative research methods, including in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, the study reveals that these women predominantly engage in farming, trading shea butter and dawadawa, and charcoal production. Despite their significant contributions to household incomes and the local economy, these women face substantial barriers such as inadequate access to education and training, insufficient infrastructure, and restrictive cultural norms. The findings underscore the critical role of intergenerational knowledge transfer, with many participants learning their skills from their mothers. However, the lack of formal training and support from governmental and non-governmental organizations limits their ability to enhance productivity and profitability. The study emphasizes the need for targeted interventions to improve access to modern agricultural techniques, business management skills, and financial resources. Additionally, policy reforms promoting gender equality in economic activities are essential to creating an enabling environment for these women. This research contributes to the broader discourse on rural development and gender equity by highlighting the resilience and adaptability of rural women and the necessity for inclusive policies and support mechanisms. The insights gained from this study offer valuable implications for policymakers, development practitioners, and stakeholders committed to fostering the economic empowerment of rural women, ultimately contributing to sustainable development goals. Future research should continue to explore and address the unique challenges faced by rural women, ensuring their active participation in the economic landscape and enhancing their socio-economic well-being.

Impact of Orunodoi Scheme on Women Empowerment of Assam: A case study of Topatoli village under Sonapur Block of Kamrup (M) District of Assam

The Orunodoi Scheme in Assam targets specific categories of people based on socio-economic criteria to ensure it reaches those most in need of financial support. The Scheme primarily aims to benefit female heads of households who are economically vulnerable. Under this scheme, eligible women receive a monthly financial assistance of Rs. 1000, which is intended to help them manage household expenses and reduce economic burdens. This direct benefit transfer empowers women by enhancing their financial independence and providing a steady source of income. This paper tries to study the economic empowerment of rural women due to the scheme and to identify various challenges faced by rural woman in accessing, utilizing scheme benefits of the study area. For these purpose data have been collected from both secondary and primary sources and analysed with different statistical techniques.

Women entrepreneurship is gaining importance in India in the wake of globalization and economic liberalization. Women entrepreneurs tend to be highly motivated, self-disciplined & self-directed. Women's entrepreneurship is important for women's position in society, and economic development of women will lead to development of family, community and country. It opens up new avenues for creating employment opportunities for women and men. The present paper focuses on parameters to be focused to enhance the entrepreneurial skill of rural women and in turn their empowerment. Rural women's economic and social development is necessary for overall economic development of society and nation. Rural women are now increasingly run their own business yet their entrepreneurial potential, managerial skill and socio-economic contribution remain largely neglected. Women entrepreneurship development is the instrument of women empowerment. Empowerment through entrepreneurship leads to self-fulfillment and makes women aware about their status, existence, right and their position is in the society. In modern era, women are becoming socially empowered, and economically empowered through business ownership. On the other hand, empowerment of rural women is also very significant. Economic empowerment of rural women will lead to the development of our country and it is very necessary to give keen attention over the empowerment of women in the rural areas for the real development of our country in all spheres.

The Impact of Microfinance on Socio- Economic Empowerment of Rural Women and Improving the Standard of Living in Karnataka.

Abstract: This study reviews annual reports of NABARD -“Status of Microfinance in India” on microfinance significance through savings by rural poor, financial inclusion, bank linkage and women entrepreneurship through SHGs for the upliftment of the standard of living of the rural poor of Karnataka state over the period from 2016-17 to 2020-21. In conducting this study five moderating variables are identified which are independent in nature and facilitates the act of poverty alleviation through microfinance. Microfinance as a Tool of Socio Economic Empowerment of Rural Women

Abstract: Micro finance has become a tool of empowering the underprivileged people in the society. It plays a prominent role in the developing countries of Asia. These countries are having lots of success stories where the poor and backward people could manage to have sustainable source of revenue for themselves through microfinance. It is observed that in maximum cases women are plying a vital role in the use of micro finance through the self help groups (SHGs). This paper tries to see the impact of micro finance on the rural women of Assam - a state which is very near to Bangladesh, the country where microfinance has got tremendous response from the women folk. Through the research it was tried to see the impact of microfinance from the socio economic perspective of the North East India. The paper is based on primary data collected from the women respondents of rural area who have experience of working with the SHGs. The paper concluded that the micro finance has contributed to the empowerment of women in rural Assam and hence micro finance has a great future in this part of India.

ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT OF RURAL WOMEN UNDER MGNREGA

The dignity of the women and their strengthening position in society could be secure when they have sound economic empowerment. Their decision–making power, potential, commitment, and the right to compete with other genders with equality could also be ensured when they have economic support through income generation projects. Therefore, the study examined the economic empowerment of rural women under MGNREGA. It also reviewed the constraints of women as a labourer, and their status under the Act. Relevant literature like journal, thesis, guidelines of the Act and news reports were used to analyze the study's various aspects using the descriptive method. It was found that the majority of the women in the rural areas depend on the wages they earn from unskilled, casual, and manual work. As most of these jobs are unstable and insecure, workers fought hardship in their families' maintenance during the lockdown. If the government fails to create job opportunities during and after the pandemic Covid-19, poverty and unemployment will lead to dislocation, conflict, alcohol abuse, household disputes, unsettled families, ill-health, abandonment in old age, and death of the head of household, etc. could happen. The most significant outcome of the study is that MGNREGA could play an influential role in the economic empowerment of rural women. It remains a set piece to bring gender equality, end poverty, and achieve inclusive economic growth. A self-sufficient economy with dignity and equality could end all the inhumane acts against women. However, effective implementation of the Act, timely utilisation of wages, and wages revision from time to time to suit the changing scenario is needed to make the Act a subject-oriented one.

Investigating the effect of vocational education and training on rural women’s empowerment

This research is an attempt to identify the most important dimensions of vocational education and training (VET) on empowering rural women, a topic that has received less attention. The present study is a quantitative, non-experimental, applied, survey research, whose statistical population includes rural women and girls who participated in VET classes. The research tool was a researcher-designed questionnaire. The reliability and validity of the research tool using a pilot test and calculating Cronbach’s alpha, AVE, and CR coefficients were shown to indicate the high capability of the research tool to collect data. The results showed that among the four dimensions of VET, the role of content and educator was more than other dimensions and these dimensions of training had improved the economic empowerment of rural women, which was often at the lowest level. The conceptual framework presented can be used as a guide to achieving sustainable development goals of the millennium; and should be considered at the national and international levels. The paper makes an impact on the growing body of knowledge by emphasizing on more important dimensions of education; which can be effective for the empowerment of women, especially in the economic dimension. In the existing studies on empowering rural women, none of them examined the effect of all different components of education on women’s overall empowerment, which are among the innovations of the present study and should be considered in future planning.

Participatory action research for rural women’s empowerment: Household production of herbal dish soap

This article aimed to do research on the economic empowerment of rural women using Participatory Action Research approach. PAR required performing research to define a problem or implement information as solutions to problems that have been defined. PAR is "research by, with, and for people" as opposed to "research on person." Participatory action research is participatory in the sense that it is a necessary condition that people play a key role and have relevant information about the existing social system (community) under review, and that they participate in the design and implementation of the action plan based on the findings of the research. This research was preceded in the search for problems faced by women in Jatisari Village, Lampung Province. The solutions obtained were in the form of providing knowledge, entrepreneurial skills, and examples of how to produce innovative products by utilizing the natural resources around them. Empowerment activities include three stages, namely: (1) Providing counseling about the possible benefits of natural resources in the environment as products for women’s needs by providing examples of the use of plants that are easy to obtain and grow, for example aloe vera which is easily found in the yard to produce a product; (2) Provide counseling on how to become a woman entrepreneur and analyze household products with high demand for daily needs (eg liquid dish soap); and (3) Demonstrating how to use aloe vera as a component in the manufacture of liquid dish soap.

Enhancing Rural Women Empowerment in Sri Lanka

Economic empowerment of rural women is a critical component and a shared goal in all societies. Moreover, it is fundamental to the sustainable socio-economic development of entire countries in the overall process of realizing gender equality. This paper explores how orthodox ideas on women's economic empowerment have changed with the availability of social and economic resources for women. Four indicators have been accompanied as supplement autonomy as capabilities, access to resources, securities, and decision making in shaping empowerment. The study adopted the descriptive design as quantitative and qualitative research methods by considering 200 married women 18-55 in Divisional Secretariats in Monaragala and Ampara districts reported where poverty rates are 25% and 28%, respectively. Data were gathered through focused group discussions, questionnaires, interviews, case studies, and observations. An equal number of employed and un-employed married women in each rural context were selected as the sample. Data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively.The study identified several barriers that affect women’s economic empowerment at the national level based on the data analysis. These barriers are the lack of decision-making power in family matters, attending extended educational needs, unattainable promotions of jobs, a lack of a compassionate working environment, and an increased risk of un-infectious diseases. It was possible to determine that there is no effective and optimistic mechanism to deal with such complexities. Much of the narrative focuses on instrumental gains on what women can do for development rather than what development can do for women manifested through the study.

Self Help Groups: An Approach for Economic Empowerment of Rural Women in India

The concept of Self Help Groups (SHGs) is a helpful instrument for the economic empowerment of women. As Haryana is one of the developed states of India, however, the growth and share of Haryana’s SHG is very marginal in total SHGs of India. The empowerment of women is crucial for the economic development of a nation and also plays a key role in building a base for change (Nandal et al. 2019). It generates income and also provides flexible working hours according to the needs of homemakers. To study the empowerment of women through entrepreneurial activities of self help groups, this particular research was conducted over the year 2015-16 with the specific objective to identify the income generating activities and investigate the effectiveness of SHGs actively working under the Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hast Shilp Yojana (AHVY) in Haryana. Also, to analyze economic constraints faced by the women. The result showed positive change in indicators in terms of income, employment and savings after joining the SHG. Thus the study concluded that SHGs have been playing a vital role in the empowerment of rural women in the study area.

The state and the share of rural women on the agricultural entrepreneurship activities in the Slovak republic

The economic empowerment of rural women in the recent development of agriculture through entrepreneurship is considered an important challenge. Rural women often manage complex households and pursue multiple livelihood strategies. Their activities typically include cultivation of crops, farming animals, processing and preparing food, working for wages in agricultural or other rural enterprises, collecting fuel and water, engaging in trade and marketing, caring for family members, and maintaining their homes. The research aimed to collect up-to-date data on Slovak rural women dealing with business in the field of agriculture, women's role and status in society in rural areas, on the farm, women's participation in education, training, and agricultural services. The main focus is dedicated to their share on the management of agricultural entities, land cultivation, employment of rural women and men, and their deal on the selected entrepreneurial activities of Slovak agriculture. Women doing business in agriculture dispose of with considerable knowledge and experience in the agricultural and food sectors. The realized research showed that the scale of farms managed by women is 325 hectares. Rural women in the surveyed group are taking care of about 2.5% of the total area of agricultural land in Slovakia and they are employing 2.40% of the working forces in the agricultural sector in Slovakia. According to our survey, rural women are under-represented in managerial and ownership positions of agricultural entities.

Economic empowerment of rural women through food processing

Rural women can play a significant role by their effectual and competent involvement in entrepreneurial activities. They have basic indigenous knowledge, skill and potential and resources to establish and manage enterprise. Income generating activities are effective instrument of social and economic development to generate employment for a number of farm women within their own social system and best tool for rural women as it adds to the family income. Women are backbone of any nation. Prosperity of the nation depends upon the prosperity of its women. Entrepreneurship is one of the ways for empowerment of women especially in rural areas and hence, promotion of women entrepreneurs is focused highly by the Government. Te food processing is one of the efforts initiated to promote value addition of fruits and vegetables especially for the unemployed, both men and women of the state. It focuses on need based short term skill training where participants learn from hands on training/ practices. The present study was undertaken to find out usefulness of fruits and vegetables preservation, milk and milk products training programme organized under rural youth training for self employment by the rural women. The study was conducted in Auraiya district of Uttar Pradesh. The sample consisted of 20 women participants each training programmes. The data was collected through personal interview technique using interview schedule. Frequency and percentage were calculated for analyzing the data. The results indicated that the fruits and vegetables preservation training perceived as good and increased their knowledge, skill and efficiency about fruits and vegetables preservation.

The Role of Radio in Fostering Economic Empowerment of Rural Women in Bogije Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos

This research sheds light on radio’s role in advancing women economic empowerment in Bogije – a rural semi-urban settlement in the outskirt of Lagos Island. Deploying qualitative approaches to research often known as interviews, the research concludes that although observable efforts have been invested in spotlighting most issues around female empowerment – precisely economic empowerment through media formats such as drama, sensitization and orientation on government aids and skills acquisition programmes, talk shows, interviews with government personnels, coverage of NGO activities on this issue, primarily, much is yet to be done about radio’s reach and other deep rooted issues which limits radio’s ability to properly deliver on its key responsibilities. The paper arrives at a position which presents a need to deal with the root causes limiting radio’s ability to function properly on this subject of focus. It further sheds light on the need for women’s economic empowerment to be taken more seriously as is done on health empowerment. It stretches across a need to monitor how women are discussed on air as they are sometimes presented as needy, helpless and desperate humans in need of rescue and empowerment which further dampens feminist goals and aims of proper female representation and empowerment. Ultimately, the paper acknowledges radio’s efforts at playing a vital role in female’s economic empowerment in Bogije while it calls for loopholes to be sealed and more efforts invested as much is yet to be done in achieving women’s economic empowerment in Bogije, Ibeju Lekki, Lagos. Self help groups and economic empowerment of women in paramakudi

A series of development programmes have been implemented for the development of economy in general ignoring women who constitute half of the total population. Here, women empowerment is the most important instrument for the economic development of a nations women empowerment has became a global governance network. In this aspect, Self Help Groups have emerged as a weapon that wields power to create a socio-economic revolution in the rural areas of our country. In this paper, an attempt has been made to evaluate the Economic Empowerment of Rural Women in Paramakudi Taluk. The source required for the study has been collected from both primary and secondary data. The size of 120 Self Help Groups members has been selected on the basis of multi-stage random sampling method. The results can be concluded that the economic status has enhanced positively for womenfolk after joining the group.

Economic empowerment of rural women for enhancing household income & health security- lessons from studies in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Kenya

Intervention of various technologies to improve the food & nutritional status of the population proved the following facts: Promotion of malt based small scale food industry not only provides opportunity for rural women to develop entrepreneurship and employment, but also provides food and nutritional security through income generation. To address this several technologies were developed under NATP like value addition to fish & prawn products, artificial pearl culture, processing of salted fish, which helped the self help group women of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu to improve their economic status. Received two patents & licensed the technology which helped the women to reduce their drudgery and also preserve the fresh fish for a longer time without getting spoiled. Product development can be taken as income generating activity in the rural areas by the illiterate women. Products can be included in supplementary feeding programs in order to improve the nutritional status of the vulnerable groups of the population. The horse gram which is commonly used for cattle feed can be diversified for human consumption with less investment. Mothers as well as Anganwadi workers preferred amylase rich supplementary foods which reduced Grade III and grade IV malnutrition in Pre- school children significantly. The studies revealed that spawn multiplication can be done by women as a co-operative venture and mushroom cultivation can be undertaken at household level as an income-generating activity. Introducing red palm oil is beneficial to overcome vitamin A deficiency. Formers are encouraged to grow back yard nutrition garden. Iron enriched chewing gum consumption improved the Iron nutritional status of boys & girls (2-16 years of age). After supplementation, morbidity rate decreased to 50% in preschool children, pregnant women and lactating women. Abstract: Empowering women and girls is central to the sustainable development agenda 2030 and a prerequisite for breaking the cycle of poverty, hunger and malnutrition and achieving sustainable development goals. Thus, empowering rural women is one of the most important ingredients for social and economic progress and sustainable development. Economic empowerment of women is the basis for their social empowerment, one of the strategies on which the plans and programs for the development of the world's rural woman have been built. The physical creation of women through the establishment of their own project could open up new horizons for effective participation in economic life in Society.This research aims to identify the efficacy of small enterprises in achieving economic empowerment of the woman and its impact on the social and family life. To achieve the purpose of the research, the case study guide was used to address the selected cases of women beneficiaries of the female legislators development system in Beni Souef Governorate and have their own projects. The study found some results related to the economic empowerment of rural women through ownership of small enterprises and their impact on family and social life.
