Impact of Typical Land Use Expansion Induced by Ecological Restoration and Protection Projects on Landscape Patterns

Land use and land cover (LULC) changes driven by ecological restoration and protection projects play a pivotal role in reshaping landscape patterns. However, the specific impacts of these projects on landscape structure remain understudied. In this research, we applied geographically weighted regression (GWR) to analyze the spatial relationships between typical land use expansion and landscape pattern characteristics in the Lesser Khingan Mountains–Sanjiang Plain region between 2017 and 2022. Our results indicate three key findings: (1) Significant spatial heterogeneity exists in the relationship between landscape patterns and land use expansion, which varies across geographic locations; (2) Ecological restoration projects generally reduce fragmentation, dominance, and heterogeneity while enhancing connectivity, particularly in forest and farmland regions. However, excessive land use expansion in certain areas may reverse these positive effects; (3) Landscape complexity increases in high-altitude mountainous regions due to land use expansion but decreases in plains, particularly in forest-to-farmland conversions. These findings provide new insights into how landscape patterns respond to ecological restoration efforts and offer actionable guidance for improving future land use planning and policy decisions. Our study highlights the need to consider local geomorphological factors when designing ecological projects, ensuring that restoration efforts align with regional landscape dynamics to maintain landscape integrity.

Spatial-temporal heterogeneity of ecological quality changes across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau under the influence of climate factors and human activities

Over the last few decades, the ecological quality of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) has significantly changed due to climate warming, humidification, and increasing human activities. Thus, evaluating this region's ecological quality and dominant factors is crucial for sustainable development. In this study, the changes in the ecological quality on the QTP from 2000 to 2020 were evaluated based on aggregated indices and Sen–MK trend analyses, and the dominant factors affecting the ecological quality of the QTP were quantitatively analyzed using decision tree classification. The results revealed that (1) the ecological quality of the QTP exhibited an overall high trend in the east and a low pattern in the west; (2) the ecological quality of the QTP significantly increased from 2000 to 2020, and human activities were the dominant factors causing this change; and (3) the changes in the ecological quality and dominant factors exhibited obvious spatiotemporal heterogeneity. The area with an improved ecological quality occurred mainly in the northern QTP region. It was governed by human activities and precipitation. In contrast, the area with a deteriorated ecological quality occurred largely in the southern QTP region and was dominated by human activities and temperature. The 2000–2010 period was the most significant period of heterogeneity regarding of ecological quality and its driving factors. (4) The change in the ecological quality was mainly affected by the synergistic relationship between human activities and climate change in this region, which encompassed multiple dominant factors. This study provides important information on the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of ecological quality change and its dominant factors on the QTP and offers systematic guidance for the planning and implementation of ecological protection projects.

Quantitative assessment of ecological assets in the world heritage karst sites based on remote sensing: with a special reference to South China Karst

The benefits provided by ecological assets play a crucial role in enhancing human well-being. However, there is a scarcity of viable methods for assessing their status. This study is grounded in Land Use and Land Cover Change (LUCC) and integrates both the quantity and quality aspects of these assets. Utilizing the ecological asset index (EQ and EQi), this study conducts a quantitative assessment of the assets in the Shibing karst and the Libo-Huanjiang karst heritage sites, while also qualitatively analyzing their influencing factors. The findings reveal that: (1) In the Shibing heritage site, forest and impervious surface assets exhibited an upward trend, whereas cropland and grassland experienced a decline; meanwhile, shrub and water body assets remained relatively stable. The total area of assets rated as excellent or good increased by 95.371 km2, resulting in an EQ enhancement of 45.427. (2) Likewise, in the Libo-Huanjiang heritage site, forest and impervious surface assets demonstrated an upward trajectory, while shrub assets declined. Cropland, grassland, and water body assets experienced minimal variation. The total area of assets rated as excellent or good expanded by 168.227 km2, resulting in an EQ enhancement of 80.806. (3) The execution of a series of ecological protection projects and management plans for heritage site conservation primarily accounts for the enhancement of regional assets. Notably, ecological resources, socio-economic conditions, human resources, and conservation management policies serve as pivotal drivers influencing the alterations in heritage site assets.

A Multi-Scenario Simulation and Dynamic Assessment of the Ecosystem Service Values in Key Ecological Functional Areas: A Case Study of the Sichuan Province, China

The ecosystem service value (ESV) is an important basis for measuring an ecological environment’s quality and the efficient management of ecosystems. It is particularly necessary to explore a proven methodology for assessing and predicting ESV dynamics coupled with policy-oriented scenarios that can provide a theoretical groundwork for macro decision, particularly in the context of implementing ecological protection and restoration projects. This study selected the land cover (LC) of Sichuan Province at five periods and the spatiotemporal dynamic equivalent factor method to assess the ESVs from 2000 to 2020. Additionally, the study coupled the Markov chain and GeoSOS-FLUS model, and predicted the future pattern of ESVs under four future development scenarios. The results show that (a) the areas of forests, shrubs, waters, wastelands, wetlands, and impervious areas showed a continuous increase from 2000 to 2020, with the most frequent interchanges occurring among croplands, forests, and grasslands. (b) The implementation of ecological protection and restoration projects led to a 13,083.32 × 108 yuan increase in ESV, and barycenter of the ESVs is located in the northeastern part of Ya’an and exhibits a tendency to move towards the northeast. (c) The ESV aggregation pattern of each city has remained unchanged, with Ganzi being the only city with a high aggregation. Overall, there are more conflict cities than coordination cities between economic development and the ecological environment. (d) The total ESV in 2025 will continue to increase under all development scenarios, reaching a maximum of 50,903.37 × 108 yuan under the EP scenario. This study can provide insights for ecological planning decisions and sustainable regional socio-economic development.

Study on the Impact of Vegetation Restoration on Groundwater Resources in Tianshan Mountain and Yili Valley in Xinjiang, China

China has implemented a series of ecological protection and restoration projects in Tianshan Mountain and Yili Valley in Xinjiang, which have significantly improved regional vegetation coverage. Vegetation improves soil structure through roots, especially increasing non-capillary porosity, which enhances the precipitation infiltration performance, thus reducing surface runoff, increasing the interception and infiltration of groundwater resources, and enhancing regional water retention capacity of soil. In order to quantitatively study the impact of ecological conservation and restoration (represented by fraction of natural vegetation coverage, FVC) on groundwater storage (GWS), we investigated GWS changes in this region, identified the main factors, and quantified their relative impacts. Here, we combined data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite, GRACE Follow-On (GRACE-FO), and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) hydrological model from January 2003 to December 2020 and evaluated GWS changes. We used the variable importance in projection and partial least squares regression methods to determine the main influencing factors. We found that (1) before and after 2012, GWS decreased at a rate of 0.80 cm/yr and 0.75 cm/yr (with statistical significance p < 0.01), respectively. (2) Before 2012, the main factors affecting the decrease in GWS were agricultural planting areas, and after 2012, they were temperature, evaporation, and FVC, with relative contributions of 54.72%, 34.59%, and 10.69%, respectively. FVC has a positive regulating effect on the increase in regional GWS.

Ecological environment quality assessment and spatial autocorrelation of northern Shaanxi mining area in China based-on improved remote sensing ecological index

The northern Shaanxi coal mining area is an important coal production base in China and an ecologically fragile area, and it is of great significance to explore the ecological environment quality and spatial evolution trend of the mining area. Based on Sentinel-2 and MODIS image data, an improved remote sensing ecological index was constructed by principal component analysis method: normalized difference vegetation index, normalized difference water index, normalized differential buildup and bare soil index, and net primary productivity. The ecological environment quality of the northern Shaanxi coal mining area and its influencing factors, as well as the spatial autocorrelation analysis of ecological environment quality, were discussed. The results showed that: 1) The vegetation coverage in the study area showed an overall increasing trend, but it was greatly affected by the average annual temperature. The NDVI index at the mine area is higher than the NDVI index at the non-mine area. 2) The water area gradually decreases with the year, which has a certain negative correlation with the total raw coal production. 3) The NDBB index showed a decreasing trend with the year, and compared with the non-mining area. 4) The coupling of year-by-year precipitation and temperature leads to interannual fluctuation of NPP value. 5) The change of ecological environment quality in the study area is the result of the comprehensive effect of natural factors and human factors. The implementation of ecological protection projects such as geological environmental protection and land reclamation in mining areas also has a certain impact on the trend of ecological environment quality. 6) There was a significant spatial autocorrelation in the quality of the ecological environment in the study area. There are significant “High-High” gathering areas of ecological environment quality within the coal mining area.

Evaluate the differences in carbon sink contribution of different ecological engineering projects

China has implemented a series of ecological engineering projects to help achieve the 2060 carbon neutrality target. However, the lack of quantitative research on ecological engineering and the contribution of climate change to terrestrial carbon sinks limits this goal. This study uses robust statistical models combined with multiple terrestrial biosphere models to quantify the impact of China's ecological engineering on terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink trends and their differences according to the difference between reality and nonpractice assumptions. The main conclusions include the following: (1) since 1901, 84% of terrestrial ecosystem carbon sinks in China have shown an increasing trend, and approximately 45% of regional carbon sinks have increased by more than 0.1 g C/m2 every 10 years. (2) Considering the impact of human activities and the implementation of ecological engineering in China, approximately 56% of carbon sinks have improved, and approximately 10% of the regions whose carbon sink growth exceeds 50 g C m−2 yr−1 are mainly in the southeast coastal of China. (3) The carbon sequestration potential and effect of the Sanjiangyuan ecological protection and construction project are better than others, at 1.26 g C m−2 yr−1 and 14.13%, respectively. The Beijing–Tianjin sandstorm source comprehensive control project helps alleviate the reduction in carbon sinks, while the southwest karst rocky desertification comprehensive control project may aggravate the reduction in carbon sinks. This study clarifies the potential of China's different ecological engineering to increase carbon sink potential, and distinguishes and quantifies the contribution of climate and human activity factors to it, which is of great significance to the system management optimization scheme of terrestrial ecosystems and can effectively serve the national carbon neutral strategy.Graphical

Land intensification use scenarios based on urban land suitability assessment of the national park

In designing national parks, it is important to balance land use with ecological protection and local socio-economic development. In the past decades, the national park has undergone landscape fragmentation and degradation of ecological functions due to climate change and land use change, especially in national parks with urban areas. Therefore, ecological environmental protection projects should include the assessment of land use when planning urban area development in the national park region. Consequently, we used the Land Suitability Evaluation (LSE) method, with 13 indicators for natural, social and ecological variables, to assess the suitability of the newly created national park for urban land use on the Tibetan Plateau. Combining results of the suitability assessment and the Cellular Automata (CA) method, three urban intensification scenarios were simulated for 2040: (1) unplanned, (2) intensified, and (3) strictly regulated urban growth boundaries (UGBs). The impact of land use on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was analyzed by remote sensing and GIS tools, and the landscape patterns of the three urban growth scenarios were calculated. Close to 87 % of the area was basically suitable, nearly 13 % was unsuitable, and only 0.06 % (43.4 km2–also included in the basically suitable) was suitable for urban land use. In 2040, the built-up areas are predicted to be 3.38, 2.71 and 2.32 times greater than in 2020 under the unplanned (without considering ecological restrictions), the intensive development (emphasizing the driving force of transportation and tourism on the expansion of built-up areas) and the strict control (maximizing ecological restrictions) scenarios, respectively. An ideal development model was used to balance ecological protection and population growth and economic development. The NDVI analysis revealed that the impact of land use on vegetation cover in the intensive development scenario was ranked as winter pastures > tourist development zones > summer pastures. It is concluded that the intensification scenario, with transport and tourism as the main spatial drivers, is the most desirable for the future coordination of ecological conservation and socio-economic development in the national park. This scenario may alleviate the current environmental pressure of livestock grazing on winter pastures in the national park on the Tibetan Plateau. However, realizing this model requires appropriate engineering design for town development. Future research should assess the impacts of urban growth on the ecological environment, with the aim to achieve sustainable urban development tailored to the various geographic regions.

Divergent climatic effects on forest greenness modulated by temperature and precipitation gradients in the Yellow River Basin, China

How climatic effects on forest greenness vary between different temperature and precipitation gradients in climate–sensitive and ecologically fragile areas, such as the Yellow River Basin (YRB) in China, is not well understood. Here we used meteorological data and remotely sensed leaf area index (LAI) data to investigate climatic effects on forest LAI changes along temperature–precipitation gradients in the YRB from 2001 to 2020. We found that changing precipitation thresholds divided forests into higher and lower LAI areas. The precipitation thresholds increased from 400 mm mean annual precipitation (MAP) in areas with a mean annual temperature (MAT) below 4 °C to 500 mm MAP in areas with a MAT above 4 °C. Forest LAI increased significantly from 2001 to 2020. The MAT and MAP thresholds changed when dividing forests into different areas with different LAI values and climatic effects. Forests greening was mainly driven by temperature in areas with LAI values between 3 and 6 m2 m−2 but was mainly driven by precipitation in areas with LAI values less than 3 m2 m−2. The threshold of MAP isopleth increased from 500 mm to 700 mm and then decreased to 500 mm, while the MAT increased from less than 0 °C to 5 °C and then increased to 12 °C. These divergent climatic effects were caused by the combined effects of water resource limitations and increasing evapotranspiration. Identifying MAT and MAP thresholds is helpful for decision–maker and managers to optimize forest restoration more accurately in future ecological protection projects facing the challenge of limited water resources in the YRB.

Exploring evolution characteristics of eco-environment quality in the Yangtze River Basin based on remote sensing ecological index

As an important ecological-economic development area in China, scientific understanding of the spatial and temporal changes in eco-environment quality (EEQ) and its drivers in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) is crucial for the effective implementation of ecological protection projects in the YRB. To address the lack of large-scale EEQ assessment in the YRB, this paper uses the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform and the Remote Sensing Ecological Index (RSEI) to investigate the spatial and temporal characteristics of EEQ in the YRB from 2000 to 2020, and to analyze the impact of various factors on the EEQ of the YRB. This study showed that: (1) The overall EEQ of YRB was at the ‘good’ grade over the past 20 years, showing an increasing trend, with the value changing from 0.70 to 0.77. (2) The YRB's EEQ has positive spatial aggregation characteristics, with the northern part of the Jialing River basin and the Han River basin exhibiting a high-high aggregation type and the upper reaches exhibiting a low-low aggregation type. (3) In the past 20 years, the human activities had a greater impact on the EEQ of the YRB; moreover, all factors had a greater impact on the EEQ than a single factor. The interaction between the biological abundance index and population density had the most effect, with a q-value of 0.737 in 2020.

Anthropogenic environmental evolution of ganggeng lake in the East Asian monsoon marginal zone over the past century

Over the past century, there has been persistent controversy regarding the relative impact of climate change and human activities on the evolution of the lake basin critical zone in the East Asian monsoon marginal zone. In this study, we focused on Ganggeng Lake, situated in the East Asian monsoon marginal zone, to conduct a comprehensive analysis of sedimentation rates, magnetic susceptibility, grain size, and pollen data from sediment cores, providing valuable insights into the sedimentary environmental changes and regional vegetation dynamics over the last 150 years. The results revealed that around the 1960s, the implementation of the government's “Take Grain as the Key Link” policy resulted in a substantial increase in water usage for extensive irrigation on cultivated land. Consequently, the inflow into the lake declined, weakening basin erosion and reducing sediment flux, leading to distinct changes in the physicochemical characteristics of the Ganggeng Lake sediments. Additionally, the pollen assemblages provided valuable information on the vegetation changes in the Ganggeng Lake basin over the past century. Notably, two significant shifts in the vegetation community were observed, corresponding to the impacts of two crucial national policies: the “Take Grain as the Key Link” policy in the 1960s and the “Conversion of Cropland to Forest” policy around 2000. The implementation of ecological environmental protection projects played a vital role in promoting the recovery of vegetation and enhancing ecosystem functionality within the lake basin. Based on our findings, it appears that over the past few decades, human activities may have exerted a more pronounced influence on the lake basin critical zone in the East Asian monsoon marginal zone than climate change.

Considering Climatic Factors, Time Lag, and Cumulative Effects of Climate Change and Human Activities on Vegetation NDVI in Yinshanbeilu, China.

Climate and human activities are the basic driving forces that control and influence the spatial distribution and change of vegetation. Using trend analysis, the Hurst index, correlation analysis, the Moran index, path analysis, residual analysis, and other methods, the effects of human activities and climate factors on vegetation change were analyzed. The results show that: (1) The research area's normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) exhibited a substantial upward trend from 2001 to 2020, increasing at a rate of 0.003/a, and the vegetation cover was generally healthy. The generally constant NDVI region made up 78.45% of the entire area, and the grassland, cultivated land, and forest land showed the most visible NDVI aggregation features. (2) The Vegetation is mainly promoted by water and heat, particularly precipitation, have a major impact on plants, with the direct influence of precipitation on vegetation growth being much greater than the indirect effect through the temperature. (3) The trend of NDVI residuals showed obvious spatial variability, presenting a distribution characteristic of high in the south and low in the north. The results of this study can provide a basis for the scientific layout of ecological protection and restoration projects in the Yinshanbeilu area.

Evolution pattern and driving mechanism of eco-environmental quality in arid oasis belt — A case study of oasis core area in Kashgar Delta

Kashgar Oasis is an ecologically fragile area in the southern margin of the Tarim Basin, which is affected by both natural conditions and human activities. Exploring the spatiotemporal dynamics and driving factors of ecological environment quality in this area is significant for maintaining regional ecological security and ecological protection. This study aims to examine the multi-year RSEI, calculated based on the GEE platform from 1990 to 2020 in the study area, located in the core area of the Oasis. The trend analysis method analyzed the spatiotemporal pattern of RSEI and dynamic evolution. Additionally, the regularity of migration directions was explored through gravity transfer and the linear directional mean. Finally, the driving forces factors were quantified by geographic detectors. The results showed that: (1) The ecological environment quality of the study area showed an increasing trend from 1990 to 2020, with the mean value of RSEI increasing from 0.542 to 0.577, an overall increase of 6.84%. (2) The improved and stable areas account for 60.901% and 5.428%, respectively, and the improved areas were mainly distributed in a large area, while the degraded area was mainly mildly degraded and had a patchy structure. (3) The change direction of different grades showed an east–west extension trend, with areas of significant improvement and slight degradation being more aligned with river flow. (4) The results showed that land use and land cover (LULC), representing human activities, had the most significant explanatory power, and the q-value of single factor detection and interaction detection of LUC-GDP were 0.506 and 0.550, respectively. This indicated that the fluctuations of eco-environmental quality in this area are closely related to the local land use patterns. This study can provide a reference for implementing local ecological environment protection and environmental restoration projects.

Scale effects on the supply–demand mismatches of ecosystem services in Hubei Province, China

Understanding the patterns, relationships, and driving forces between ecosystem services (ESs) supply–demand at multiple spatial scales can facilitate sustainable hierarchical management. However, the scale effects of ESs supply–demand mismatches were typically ignored, resulting in inadequate targeted ecosystem promotion policies. This study identified the supply–demand mismatches of the key ESs (grain production, water yield, carbon sequestration, and soil conservation) using the ecological supply–demand ratio and bivariate Moran's I at three grid and county scales from 2000 to 2020 in Hubei Province, China. Then the spatial regression models were applied to explore the driving forces of these mismatches. The major results revealed that (1) Hubei Province and counties located away from urban areas were self-sufficient in the ESs supply–demand, but the numbers of these counties declined over the twenty years. The characteristics of ESs mismatches in some patches may be obscured at coarser scales. (2) The directions of socioecological drivers were robust, but their intensities changed significantly at the four scales. The normalized difference vegetation index was the primary positive driver at the fine scale, while population, economy, and proportion of construction land became dominant drivers at coarser scales. Factors influencing mismatches were more diverse at the fine scale compared to the coarse scale. (3) Efficient strategies were scale-dependent and place-based. Different management units should clarify their responsibilities and strengthen linkages between upper and lower levels to achieve sustainable ESs development. At the provincial level, strengthening interregional cooperation and allocating surplus grain and water resources from the southwest to urban regions contributes to balancing regional ESs. At the county level, adopting region-specific strategies based on delineating ESs management zones is crucial. At finer management levels, incorporating micro-scale mismatch locations and natural background information can provide valuable guidance for localized ecological protection and restoration projects. The findings underscore the strengths of conducting assessments of ESs supply–demand at multiple scales, enabling different government levels to enhance effective ecosystem management and prevent misinformation.

Ecological membrane for slope engineering based on red bed soil.

Ecological slope protection projects (such as the reinforcement of low slopes by plants and ecological restorations of the soil of high steep rocky slopes) are essential for restoring the natural environment. In this study, red bed soil and composite polymer adhesive materials were used to develop an ecological membrane for application in slope ecological protection. The basic physical and mechanical properties of the ecological membranes with different material percentages were studied through tensile strength test and viscosity test, the effect of different material percentages on the properties of ecological membranes was studied, and the soil protection performance and ecological restoration performance were studied through anti-erosion and plant growth tests. The results show that the ecological membrane is soft and tough, with high tensile strength. The addition of the red bed soil can enhance the strength of the ecological membrane, and the ecological membrane with 30% red bed soil has the highest tensile strength. The ecological membrane has considerable tensile deformation capability and viscosity, and up to 100% by mass, the more composite polymer adhesive materials added, the greater the tensile deformation capability and viscosity. And the ecological membrane can enhance the anti-erosion performance of the soil. This study clarifies the development and technology of the ecological membrane, reveals the effect of different material percentages on the properties of ecological membrane, and analyzes the slope ecological protection mechanism of the ecological membrane, thereby providing theoretical and data support for its development, improvement, and application.

Evolution of County Socio–Ecological Systems in Nature Reserves in Western China Over the Past 30 Years

The evolution process of socio–ecological systems from 1990 to 2020 in the Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County, located in the National Key Ecological Function Area of western China, was analyzed quantitatively based on resilience theory and methodology combined with catastrophe theory and adaptive cycle theory, through field investigation, questionnaires and interviews, social data collection and remote sensing data analysis. The results show that the coordinated development of socio–ecological systems has made great progress in recent decades in the study area, and the coordinated development of social systems and ecosystems has a high degree of coupling and a strong connection. Changes in ecosystem resilience regularly surpassed changes in the social system, indicating the significant impact and success of ecological protection policies and projects in recent decades. In future, improvements in the social sub-system will be the key to developing the socio–ecological system in the study area. Enhancing social sub-system resiliency, implementing transformational development and green industry development, and transforming and realizing ecological product values are important topics for further investigation in the study area. Substantial changes in policy, production, population and climate change are needed to promote the evolution of socio–ecological systems. Stable national policies are crucial for improving people's livelihoods and providing ecological protections.

Soil Quality Assessment of Several Kinds of Typical Artificial Forestlands in the Inner Mongolia Basin of the Yellow River

Located in the middle and upper parts of the Yellow River Basin, Qingshuihe County, Inner Mongolia, is a typical hilly and gully loess region and one of areas under the implementation of major ecological protection and restoration projects in the key ecological areas of Yellow River. Scientifically and accurately constructing a soil quality evaluation system for different types of artificial forest land and evaluating their soil quality are essential because they help optimize the structure of artificial forest land and improve the soil quality in the loess hilly area of Yellow River Basin. In this study, soil from four representative types of artificial forest land in the middle and upper reaches of the Yellow River Basin in Inner Mongolia was selected as the study object, with natural non-forest land as the control. Sixteen soil property indices in five classes, namely, soil texture, acid–base properties, moisture, pore, and nutrient, were screened using correlation analysis, minimum dataset (MDS), and principal component analysis methods, and an MDS of soil quality evaluation was constructed. Results showed that (1) the evaluation indices of artificial forest land soil quality based on the MDS included total potassium content, total phosphorus content, alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen content, total nitrogen content, sand content, moisture content, and non-capillary porosity. (2) No significant differences were observed in the soil quality index among the MDS, total dataset, and significant dataset (SDS), all of which exhibited significant positive correlations. (3) The soil quality of the different types of forest land was sorted from high to low as follows: mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forests, larch forests, mixed arbor and shrub forests, Armeniaca sibirica forests, and natural non-forest land.

Impacts of nature reserve policy on regional ecological environment quality: A case study of Sanjiangyuan region.

Uncovering the ecological effectiveness of nature reserve policies will help protect and manage nature reserves in the future. Taking Sanjiangyuan region as an example, we examined the impacts of the spatial layout characteristics of natural reserves on the ecological environment quality by constructing the dynamic degree of land use and land cover change index, and depicted the spatial differences of the ecological effectiveness of natural reserve policies both inside and outside the natural reserves. Combined with ordinary least squares and field survey results, we explored the influencing mechanism of nature reserve policies on ecological environment quality. The results showed that the ecological quality of the whole region of Sanjiangyuan had been improved significantly since the implementation of the nature reserve policies, and that the transformation of unused land into ecological land was the most important type of land use change for the ecological environment quality improvement. The ecological effectiveness of large-scale nature reserves with concentrated and contiguous distribution was obvious, while the ecological effectiveness of small-scale nature reserves with scattered distribution and close to the administrative boundaries was relatively small. Although the ecological effectiveness of nature reserves was better than that of non-reserved areas, the ecological improvement of nature reserves and the surrounding areas was synchronous. The nature reserve policy had significantly improved ecological environment quality by implementing ecological protection and restoration projects in nature reserves. Meanwhile, it had alleviated the pressure of farmers and herdsmen's activities on the ecological environment by taking measures such as grazing restriction and guiding conversion of industry and production. In the future, we should promote the construction of ecosystem integrity protection network system with National Park as the core, strengthen the integrated protection and linkage management of National Park and surrounding areas, and help farmers and herdsmen further broaden their livelihoods.

Analysis of Impact of Well-Facilitated Farmland Construction—Engineering Measures on Farmland Quality

We studied the influence and correlation of soil improvement, farmland ecological protection, soil fertilization, and field infrastructure construction on the quality grade of well-fertilized farmland in the engineering measures of well-fertilized farmland construction. Taking Xiao County of the Anhui Province as the study area, based on the software platforms of SPSS, ArcGIS10.6, and the county farmland resource management information system, we investigated the farmland quality changes of well-facilitated farmland before and after construction using the fuzzy evaluation method and analytic hierarchy process. We used principal component analysis and the gray relational method to analyze the impact and correlation of various engineering measures on farmland quality. The farmland quality grade in the study area was improved by a 0.59 grade after the construction of the well-facilitated farmland. Well-facilitated farmland construction engineering measures mainly affected the farmland quality through 12 factors, such as the soil bulk density, tillage layer texture, irrigation and drainage guarantee rates, forest network density, and field road accessibility. There is a strong correlation between these factors and the characteristics of farmland quality; the degrees of correlation were 0.865–0.610, respectively. The highest correlation degree was 0.939 between the deep plowing and deep loosening soil improvement project and the improvement of the well-facilitated basic farmland quality; this was followed by soil fertilization with an increased application of organic fertilizer, farmland ecological protection, and the field infrastructure project with correlations of 0.936, 0.857, and 0.563, respectively. Represented by the improvement of farmland fertility, the soil improvement project had the strongest impact on well-facilitated farmland quality. The soil fertility project, farmland ecological protection project, and the field infrastructure project were the second most important, with very close degrees of correlation.

Spatiotemporal Evolution of Soil Erosion and Its Driving Mechanism in the Mongolian Section of the Yellow River Basin

Soil erosion is a popular environmental issue that threatens sustainability. Influenced by multiple factors, such as climate, soil, and terrain, Baotou City, which is in the Bohai Sea Economic Circle and the Economic Belt along the Yellow River, has a severe ecological environment. In this study, revised soil and soil wind erosion equations were used to evaluate the soil erosion dynamics in Baotou City, and the potential driving factors of soil erosion were further investigated. Results showed that from 1990 to 2020, the water erosion modulus in Baotou City increased first, decreased, and then increased, with great fluctuations in annual changes. The wind erosion modulus decreased continuously, with a small fluctuation in annual changes. Water erosion in 2020 was more severe, with 4840.5 km2 added to the desert steppe and 1300.5 km2 reduced in the Yellow River Basin. The extent of wind erosion was significantly reduced, and the phenomenon of wind erosion improved. Meteorological factors are the primary factors that influence soil water erosion and soil wind erosion. Meanwhile, adverse climate changes can alter physical and chemical soil properties and vegetation coverage, thereby indirectly influencing soil erosion. With the implementation of the Beijing–Tianjin sandstorm source control, the farmland return to forest project, the ecological restoration and protection project at the southern and northern foothills of Daqingshan Mountains, grazing prohibition, and rotation grazing—including grassland awards, subsidies, and other policies and systems during this period—the overall deteriorating trend of the grassland ecological environment in Baotou was contained, grassland ecological system functions were improved, wind and sand erosion was prevented, biodiversity was maintained, and the ecological service functions of soil and water conservation were guaranteed.
