1. 1. Between oviposition and the late gastrula we found that the concentration of ecdysteroids is higher in diapausing eggs than in non-diapausing eggs. 2. 2. Enzymatic hydrolysis, with Helix pomatia juice, of the conjugated ecdysteroids increases the immunoreactivity of the extracts in greater proportion in diapausing eggs. 3. 3. The analysis of developmental variations of the free ecdysteroids in monovoltin strains shows the presence of a rise in ecdysone in relation to the onset of the diapause (at the gastrula stage). 4. 4. Acidic treatment with HCl which prevents the diapause is followed by an increase of free 20-hydroxy ecdysone. 5. 5. The early diapause is characterized by the loss of ecdysteroids in free-form (ecdysteroids are mainly in conjugated form), while late diapause shows an increase of free ecdysteroids in relation to the resumption of embryogenesis.
