On the morning of 5 September 1960 at 130 49' N, 67? 17.5' W five swallows (probably Hirundo rustica) were seen flying southward, two singly and three in a group; a dragonfly (sp.?) landed on the ship. On 6 Sept. at 170 27' N, 690 51' W twelve groups of swallows (32 individuals, at least 7 H. rustica) passed flying southwesterly, two dragonflies passed flying easterly, and three single passerine birds passed flying southwesterly. These observations may constitute the first direct evidence for flights by birds and insects across the eastern Caribbean Sea. From two areas in the eastern Caribbean Sea, I observed swallows (Aves: Hirundinidae) and dragonflies (Insecta: Odonata) flying south during September, 1960. These notes probably constitute the first direct evidence of migratory flights across the eastern Caribbean.
