U.S. and Chinese Scientists Discuss the Ocean's Response to Climate Change: Climate Change and Coastal Oceans Workshop; Qingdao, China, 26–28 October 2008

A 3‐day workshop was held in China to discuss coastal ocean processes, the biogeochemistry of large river‐dominated ocean margins (RiOMars), and climate change and variability studies; to formulate a strategy for a joint venture to assess how climate change has affected coastal oceans; and to predict the ocean's response to future change scenarios. The workshop, which brought together experts from Texas A&M University (TAMU) and five Chinese universities and institutes—Ocean University of China (OUC), Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS), Xiamen University (XU), Tianjin University of Science and Technology (TUST), and East China Normal University (ECNU), highlighted the similarities in topics important to North America and Asia.

The development of the Distance Education College of East China Normal University: a case study

PurposeThis paper aims to present a picture of the past and the present status of the Distance Education College (DEC) of East China Normal University (ECNU). It describes what the DEC has achieved in each phase, and probes into some essential problems that the DEC has attempted to solve.Design/methodology/approachThis article provides a comprehensive description of the development of the DEC by following a case study method.FindingsThe DEC goes through three stages. In the first phase, a teacher‐focused policy and disciplined management are formed. In the second phase, a quality‐first policy is emphasized, and two training modes are developed: the human‐centered management mode and the trainee‐oriented training mode. In the third phase, the DEC initiates further innovation and uses a new platform.Practical implicationsECNU has witnessed and participated in the development of modern distance education in China. It remains successful in developing distance education. The effort made by the DEC well showcases the overall development and growth of modern distance education in China.Originality/valueThis article presents the development of the DEC and will help readers understand the developmental process of distance education colleges in China.

Teacher training in China and a practical model: e‐Training Community (eTC)

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to introduce the overall situation of online teacher training in China, and then to analyze some typical state level e‐training projects; second, to describe the problems that most teacher training agencies (TTAs) have. Also, this article presents the background, process and achievement of a practical model – e‐Training Community (eTC) – which integrates the advantages of professional organizations and TTAs.Design/methodology/approachThis article reviews literature related to Ministry of Education (MOE) policies and general reviews or reports about China's teacher e‐training. The case study approach is applied in this study. The e‐Training Community is a particular cooperative model developed by the Distance Education College of East China Normal University. A survey and interview are applied to gain deep understanding of this model.FindingsE‐learning is an effective way for teacher education in China to meet the challenge of massive and routine training. The recent projects initiated by MOE show that the trend of e‐training is on the right track. However, China's teacher e‐training still has a long way to go because most TTAs still do not have the ability to implement e‐training by themselves. The eTC model presented in this article shows its strength in solving this problem.Practical implicationsThe development of distance education needs professional guidance. How to integrate professional strength of universities and practical strength of local agencies is key to improving the overall quality of teacher e‐training.Originality/valueThis article introduces and analyzes the eTC model, which is a creative model in the field of distance education in China. This model is a good example for professional organizations to push the e‐learning practice.

A Sino-German semi-virtual seminar in mathematics education

In summer 2006 the University of Education in Weingarten, Germany, and East China Normal University, Shanghai, performed a semi-virtual seminar with mathematics students on “Mathematics and Architecture”. The goal was the joint development of teaching materials for German or Chinese school, based on different buildings such as “Nanpu Bridge”, or the “Eiffel Tower”. The purpose of the seminar was to provide a learning environment for students supported by using information and communication technology (ICT) to understand how the hidden mathematics in buildings should be related to school mathematics; to experience the multicultural potential of the international language “Mathematics”; to develop “media competence” while communicating with others and using technologies in mathematics education; and to recognize the differences in teaching mathematics between the two cultures. In this paper we will present our ideas, experiences and results from the seminar.

Synthesis of a New Family of Hexakisferrocenyl Hexagons and Their Electrochemical Behavior

The design and synthesis of two new hexakisferrocenyl hexagons has been achieved via coordination-driven self-assembly wherein the size and relative distribution of six ferrocene moieties has been precisely controlled. Insight into the structure and electronic properties of these supramolecules was obtained through electrochemical studies.

Chinese Conceptions of “Rights”: From Mencius to Mao—and Now

The recent explosion of popular protest in China, often framed as a demand for the fulfillment of “rights,” has captured widespread attention. Some observers interpret the protests as signs of a “moral vacuum.” Others see the unrest as signaling a powerful new “rights consciousness.” In either case, the protests are often regarded as a major challenge to the stability of the political system. In this article, an examination of Chinese conceptions of “rights,” as reflected in the ethical discourses of philosophers, political leaders, and protesters (and as contrasted with American understandings of rights), provides the basis for questioning prevailing assumptions about the fragility of the Chinese political order. For over two millennia, Chinese political thought, policy, and protest have assigned central priority to the attainment of socioeconomic security. As a result, the meaning of “rights” in Chinese political discourse differs significantly from the Anglo-American tradition. Viewed in historical context, China's contemporary “rights” protests seem less politically threatening. The Chinese polity appears neither as vacuous nor as vulnerable as it is sometimes assumed to be.Elizabeth J. My Journey West

“Gate” was the first English word I ever uttered to an American. It was in August 1987, at San Francisco airport, where I had just arrived from Shanghai and was looking for my transfer flight. That the person actually understood it was shocking to me. Clearly, my journey from a Chinese academic to an American graduate student did not start with much promise. Like many in my generation, I taught myself English in silence, and in my case, in a rural backwater of central China in 1979 as I prepared for the entrance examinations to one of a few precious graduate programs just opening up in China. In 1980 I was admitted to a history MA program at East China Normal University in Shanghai. But my listening and spoken English was close to none, and I could barely express myself at graduate seminars in the early days of my American journey. A professor of the American West at Northern Arizona University promptly dismissed me in a note: that I did not belong here; I would not make it; and I should go back home. It amused me more than anything else, as I knew even then that the language test would pass, and I was not worried whether I would make it either, whatever that meant; my concern was elsewhere.

Huang Zuolin: Michael Chekhov’s Link to China’s Modern Theatre

The folllowing article is a revised and edited version of a keynote address given by Faye Chunfang Fei at the Michael Chekhov Symposium, ‘Theatre of the Future?’, in November 2005 – held at Dartington Hall, where the actor and director Huang Zuolin worked under Chekhov’s guidance in 1936, an experience which helped to shape his lifelong work in uniting the best in western theatrical traditions with those of his native China. Faye Chunfang Fei traces this formative influence, along with those of Stanislavsky, of Brechtian Epic Theatre, and of traditional and modern Chinese forms, in shaping some of the major productions of probably the most influential figure in the Chinese theatre of the later twentieth century. Faye Chunfang Fei received her doctorate in Theatre Studies from the Graduate Center of City University of New York in 1991, and taught theatre in the United States for nine years before taking her present position of Professor of English and Drama at East China Normal University, Shanghai. Her publications include Chinese Theories of Theatre and Performance from Confucius to the Present (University of Michigan Press, 1999), and she is also an internationally produced playwright.

Statistical distribution of nonlinear random wave height

A statistical model of random wave is developed using Stokes wave theory of water wave dynamics. A new nonlinear probability distribution function of wave height is presented. The results indicate that wave steepness not only could be a parameter of the distribution function of wave height but also could reflect the degree of wave height distribution deviation from the Rayleigh distribution. The new wave height distribution overcomes the problem of Rayleigh distribution that the prediction of big wave is overestimated and the general wave is underestimated. The prediction of small probability wave height value of new distribution is also smaller than that of Rayleigh distribution. Wave height data taken from East China Normal University are used to verify the new distribution. The results indicate that the new distribution fits the measurements much better than the Rayleigh distribution.

School-Based Curriculum Development: An Interview Study of Chinese Kindergartens

This study aims to investigate how school-based curriculum development (SBCD) was interpreted and implemented in a Chinese context like Hong Kong whose educational system is highly centralized and bureaucratic. Altogether 118 teachers and 34 principals reported their beliefs and practice in SBCD, and four principals were interviewed in individual sessions. The majority of the principals and teachers admitted that they adopted one of the learning packages provided by local publishers. The dichotomies of approaches to SBCD found in Shanghai studies (Yan, S. J., Gao, J., & Jiang, Y. (2004). Theoretical framework of school-base curriculum development (in Chinese). In Shanghai Education Commission (Ed.) Developing kindergarten-based curriculum: Theoretical and practical studies. Shanghai: Shanghai Education Publishing House; Zhu, J. X. (2003). Kindergarten curriculum (in Chinese). Shanghai: East China Normal University Press) were strongly evident in Hong Kong kindergartens: the approach of ‘school-based developing of original curriculum’ and that of ‘school-based implementing of chosen curriculum’. The latter was widely used by most of the kindergartens. Implications for those who work with young children as well as those who work in teacher education programs are discussed.

A bridge between Chinese and North American curriculum studies

In this paper, the Presidential Address given to the first triennial meeting of the International Association for the Advancement of Curriculum Studies (IAACS) held at East China Normal University in Shanghai, China, William Pinar details certain resonances between the Chinese curriculum studies tradition and the work of the legendary Canadian curriculum theorist Ted Aoki. In so doing, Pinar hopes to contribute to the creation of “dialogue between Chinese curriculum wisdom and Western curriculum theories,” to help “form a dynamic relationship between the two” (Zhong and Zhang 2003, p. 260).

Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone developments in Asia: Problems and prospects1

Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zones (NWFZs) are binding agreements to prevent the acquisition and stationing of nuclear weapons within a particular region, and to secure guarantees from nuclear states not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against the zone. In the context of developing dialogues on nuclear proliferation and security issues in the Asian region, the existing Southeast Asian NWFZ (Bangkok Treaty), the current negotiations towards a Central Asian NWFZ, and proposals for NWFZs in South Asia and Northeast Asia, are examined and assessed from the viewpoint of their contributions to regional arms control and security, scope, and prospects for implementation. It is concluded that such zones provide an important avenue, in conjunction with the Nonproliferation Treaty, for regional groups of states in Asia to reduce nuclear proliferation threats within their own regions, to gain security assurances from the nuclear powers, and to facilitate wider confidence-building and cooperative security approaches to nuclear and weapons-of-mass destruction threats across the Asian region.
