Preferences for token exchange‐production schedules: Effects of task difficulty and token‐production schedules

Previous research suggests that accumulated exchange‐production schedules promote increased work completion and are more preferred than distributed exchange‐production schedules. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the response effort or token‐production schedules associated with token delivery influenced preferences for exchange‐production schedules. Tokens exchanged under accumulated schedules were more preferred, relative to distributed schedules, when tokens were earned for completing easy tasks. When participants earned tokens for completing difficult tasks, two of three participants preferred accumulated exchange‐production schedules (Experiment 1). Under dense token‐production schedules, accumulated exchange‐production schedules were preferred, but participant's preferences switched to distributed schedules under increasing token‐production (i.e., leaner) schedules (Experiment 2).

Boom Chack Boom-A multimethod investigation of motor inhibition in professional drummers.

IntroductionOur hands are the primary means for motor interaction with the environment, and their neural organization is fundamentally asymmetric: While most individuals can perform easy motor tasks with two hands equally well, only very few individuals can perform complex fine motor tasks with both hands at a similar level of performance. The reason why this phenomenon is so rare is not well understood. Professional drummers represent a unique population to study it, as they have remarkable abilities to perform complex motor tasks with their two limbs independently.MethodsHere, we used a multimethod neuroimaging approach to investigate the structural, functional, and biochemical correlates of fine motor behavior in professional drummers (n = 20) and nonmusical controls (n = 24).ResultsOur results show that drummers have higher microstructural diffusion properties in the corpus callosum than controls. This parameter also predicts drumming performance and GABA levels in the motor cortex. Moreover, drummers show less activation in the motor cortex when performing a finger‐tapping task than controls.ConclusionIn conclusion, professional drumming is associated with a more efficient neuronal design of cortical motor areas as well as a stronger link between commissural structure and biochemical parameters associated with motor inhibition.

Task difficulty modulates voluntary attention allocation, but not distraction in an auditory distraction paradigm

Keeping task-relevant sensory events in the focus of attention while ignoring irrelevant ones is crucial for optimizing task behavior. This attention-distraction balance might change with the perceptual demands of the ongoing task: while easy tasks might be performed with low attentional effort, difficult ones require enhanced attention. The goal of the present study was to investigate how task difficulty affected allocation of attention and distractibility in an auditory distraction paradigm. Participants performed a tone duration discrimination task in which tones were rarely, occasionally presented at a rare pitch (distracters), and task difficulty was manipulated by the duration difference between short and long tones. Short tones were consistently 200 ms long, while long tone duration was 400 ms in the easy, and 260 ms in the difficult condition. Behavioral results and deviant-minus-standard event-related potential (ERP) waveforms suggested similar magnitudes of distraction in both conditions. ERPs without such a subtraction showed that tone onsets were preceded by a negative-going trend, suggesting that participants prepared for tone onsets. In the difficult condition, N1 amplitudes to tone onsets were enhanced, indicating that participants invested more attentional resources. Increased difficulty also slowed down tone offset processing as reflected by significantly delayed offset-related P1 and N1/N2 waveforms. These results suggest that although task difficulty compels participants to attend the tones more strongly, this does not have significant impact on distraction-related processing.

BEING RESPECTED AND ADMIRED IN OLD AGE: DYNAMICS OF SOCIAL STATUS AND AGING

Social status - the standing of a person or group in the social hierarchy - is part and parcel of social life and a significant determinant of cognition and behavior. Status hierarchies are basis of virtually all human and primate societies and assign different roles and privileges to its members. However, the dynamic nature of social status and the underlying mechanisms in old age are not well understood. Therefore, this symposium addresses questions of how social status is influenced by aging-related changes in roles, life events, self-concept, and images of aging and how social status shapes in response personality, subjective age, prosocial behavior, performance, and well-being in old age. Bellingtier and colleagues examined objective and subjective social status and their connections to subjective age, attitudes towards aging, and awareness of age-related changes. Zhang shows paradoxical association between aging stereotypes and prosocial behaviors toward older adults. Barber and Hamel investigated how stereotypes of reduced physical competence in old age affect the gait performance on easy and difficult tasks. Weiss and colleagues take a cross-cultural perspective on the different sources of social status in China, Germany, and the US showing that generations in contrast to age groups represent a source of high social status in later life. Finally, Kornadt investigates the dynamic interplay of changes in social roles and personality in old age. Together, these presentations enlarge our understanding of the dynamics of social status in old age.

Self-Confidence and Unraveling in Matching Markets

We document experimentally how biased self-assessments affect the outcome of labor markets. In the experiments, we exogenously manipulate the self-confidence of participants in the role of workers regarding their relative performance by employing hard and easy real-effort tasks. Participants in the role of firms can make offers before information about the workers’ performance has been revealed. Such early offers by firms are more often accepted by workers when the real-effort task is hard than when it is easy. We show that the treatment effect works through a shift in beliefs; that is, under-confident agents are more likely to accept early offers than overconfident agents. The experiment identifies a behavioral determinant of unraveling, namely biased self-assessments. The treatment with the hard task entails more unraveling and thereby leads to lower efficiency and less stability, and it shifts payoffs from high- to low-quality firms. 1846 Preparing for FLS: A Survey of Residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Study Objective Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) is a validated curriculum that uses laparoscopic simulation to prepare surgeons for the operating room. The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology has made FLS certification an eligibility requirement to take the certifying board exam for residents graduating in 2020 and onwards. The objective of this study is to describe the resident experience and to quantify test preparation for the FLS exam. Design This is a prospective observational study at a large academic medical center. Setting This study took place at UT Southwestern Medical Center between September 1, 2018 and March 31, 2019. Patients or Participants Second year residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology were invited to participate in the study if they had completed their initial FLS certification exam. Of 18 second year residents, 15 met eligibility criteria and all agreed to participate. Interventions Participants completed a two-page questionnaire about their preparation for the exam, including questions about practice time and repetitions for the five skills tasks and time spent watching the FLS-provided videos. Measurements and Main Results 15 residents completed the survey. Participants spent an average of 3 sessions practicing for an average of 2-3 hours per task. 11/15 residents rated the ligating loop the easiest task to master and 8/15 residents rated the precision cut most difficult. Residents viewed the training modules an average of 1.7 times. All 15 residents who took the exam passed. Conclusion FLS certification will soon be a requirement of all graduating US residents in Obstetrics & Gynecology. Residents and training programs will benefit from an understanding of the time and resources required to successfully take this exam. Our data suggests that residents spent upwards of 10 hours practicing to proficiency on the simulation tasks, in addition to viewing the training videos.

Previous Musical Experience and Cortical Thickness Relate to the Beneficial Effect of Motor Synchronization on Auditory Function.

Auditory processing can be enhanced by motor system activity. During auditory-motor synchronization, motor activity guides auditory attention and thus facilitates auditory processing through active sensing. Previous research on enhanced auditory processing through motor synchronization has been limited to easy tasks with simple stimulus material. Further, the mechanisms and brain regions underlying this synchronization are unclear. We investigated the effect of motor synchronization on auditory processing with naturalistic, musical auditory material in a discrimination task. We further assessed how previous musical training and cortical thickness of specific brain regions relate to different aspects of auditory-motor synchronization. We conducted an auditory-motor experiment in 139 adults. The task involved melody discrimination and beat tapping synchronization. Additionally, 68 participants underwent structural MRI. We found that individuals with better auditory-motor synchronization accuracy showed improved melody discrimination, and that melody discrimination was better in trials with higher tapping accuracy. However, melody discrimination was worse in the tapping than in the listening only condition. Longer previous musical training and thicker Heschl’s gyri were associated with better melody discrimination and better tapping synchrony. Post hoc analyses furthermore pointed to a possible moderating role of frontal regions. Our results suggest that motor synchronization can enhance auditory discrimination abilities through active sensing, but that this beneficial effect can be counteracted by dual-task inference when the two tasks are too challenging. Moreover, prior experience and structural brain differences influence the extent to which an individual can benefit from motor synchronization in complex listening. This could inform future research directed at development of personalized training programs for hearing ability.

Sovereignty, trade, and legislation: The evolution of energy law in a changing climate

Recent debates on climate change have necessitated a new seminal jurisprudence and proposition of constituents and core principles of energy law in the Anthropocene. The proposed principles depart from the traditional notion of energy law, which focused on rights and duties of key industry players for economic growth through optimal resource exploitation. Sovereignty over natural resources and sustainability are part of the proposed principles. This paper observes potential conflict with international trade rules at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) amidst other conceivable debatable issues. It critically examines the likely coexistence of trade rules, climate change objectives and sovereignty over natural resources through legislation considering emerging climate responsibility by corporate structures in the energy industry. Policy insights revolve around reforms to achieve symmetry between sovereignty, trade and climate objectives. Specifically, these include climate-conscious reforms in WTO law, incorporating positive energy industry obligations in climate deals and country-specific legislative reforms for achieving climate objectives. These may not prove to be easy tasks. The egregious problem of sovereignty needs delicate attention in construing how it relates with climate change measures, environmental policies at the WTO and sustainable development of energy resources. Reform processes at international and national law would have to be structured systematically to achieve desired results. The personalities and processes for reforms also need critical consideration.

Auditor Task Selection Under Time Pressure

We start from the observation that auditors have discretion to order their tasks and investigate whether auditors use their task discretion to prioritize easy over difficult tasks and to reduce more effort in difficult tasks. Drawing on Conservation of Resources theory, which states that humans are motivated to protect their current cognitive resources and acquire new cognitive resources, we argue that auditors weigh potential resource losses more than potential resource gains. As difficult tasks deplete more cognitive resources than easy tasks, we expect auditors to prioritize easy tasks. Our results are consistent with this hypothesis. We also find that auditors reduce more effort in difficult tasks but this effect is driven by the prioritization of easy tasks. We propose psychological ownership as a mechanism that can alleviate this proclivity to prioritize easier tasks. We do not find any evidence for a role of psychological ownership. In a supplemental experiment, we examine whether time pressure curbs feelings of psychological ownership. We show that time pressure significantly reduces feelings of psychological ownership and hence is an important factor to consider when working on the facilitation of psychological ownership in the audit environment.

Capuchin and rhesus monkeys but not humans show cognitive flexibility in an optional-switch task

Learned rules help us accurately solve many problems, but by blindly following a strategy, we sometimes fail to find more efficient alternatives. Previous research found that humans are more susceptible to this “cognitive set” bias than other primates in a nonverbal computer task. We modified the task to test one hypothesis for this difference, that working memory influences the advantage of taking a shortcut. During training, 60 humans, 7 rhesus macaques, and 22 capuchin monkeys learned to select three icons in sequence. They then completed 96 baseline trials, in which only this learned rule could be used, and 96 probe trials, in which they could also immediately select the final icon. Rhesus and capuchin monkeys took this shortcut significantly more often than humans. Humans used the shortcut more in this new, easier task than in previous work, but started using it significantly later than the monkeys. Some participants of each species also used an intermediate strategy; they began the learned rule but switched to the shortcut after selecting the first item in the sequence. We suggest that these species differences arise from differences in rule encoding and in the relative efficiency of exploiting a familiar strategy versus exploring alternatives.

Analyzing the Sentiment of MOOC Discussion Posts

The purpose of the project is to identify common difficulties that learners may face and to understand their emotions as they progress through MOOCs. MOOC is an abbreviation for the Massive Open Online Course and the research deals with the data from ten different courses from Coursera. The data is used to extract pieces of text that students have made. Then, those certain texts are required to be sent to Google Cloud Natural Language API. This app allows users to get a sentiment analysis of a text. The main goal is to assist instructors with monitoring MOOC to make it more efficient and easier for students to progress since it assists to improve the courses.
 To achieve this, the first step is to gather all the data from each of the courses. Then use programming to dump all that data into one big database. The program that is used here is called Pycharm and user is required to use python and sql to aid him in dumping the data in the database. Once the database is created, coding is done to only select out the pieces of information that are needed. These texts should be where students make comments or ask questions. Next, the data is queried to send these texts to Google Cloud Natural Language API. Here, the program breaks down all the sentences to only be just words. Then the program is going to categorize each word according to whether its connotation is positive, negative or neutral. Next, all the words are sorted according to their connotations. The overall sentiment depends on the emotion that has the highest number. If positives and negatives are all balanced out then the sentiment is neutral. Sentiment scores range from -1 to 1, where -1 is the most negative, 1 is the most positive and anywhere near 0 is neutral.
 Positive sentiment scores indicate instructors that students are doing well on their course and neutral sentiment scores indicate that the course is balanced out with difficulties and easy tasks. However, negative sentiment is the most important to instructors since it indicates them that students are struggling and they need to improve the course.

Dealing with angry patients

Understanding what angers patients, how to listen to their concerns and what steps to take to find a resolution sound like relatively easy tasks. But, in reality, they can be one of the toughest challenges physician executives face.

Dbgap2x: an R package to explore and extract data from the database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP).

Based on the Genomic Data Sharing Policy issued in August 2007, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has supported several repositories such as the database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP). dbGaP is an online repository that provides access to large-scale genetic and phenotypic datasets with more than 1000 studies. However, navigating the website and understanding the relationship between the studies are not easy tasks. Moreover, the decryption of the files is a complex procedure. In this study we propose the dbgap2x R package that covers a broad range of functions for searching dbGaP studies, exploring the characteristics of a study and easily decrypting the files from dbGaP. dbgap2x is an R package with the code available at https://github.com/gversmee/dbgap2x. A containerized version including the package, a Jupyter server and with a Notebook example is available at https://hub.docker.com/r/gversmee/dbgap2x. Artificial intelligence in cardiovascular imaging: state of the art and implications for the imaging cardiologist.

Healthcare, conceivably more than any other area of human endeavour, has the greatest potential to be affected by artificial intelligence (AI). This potential has been shown by several reports that demonstrate equal or superhuman performance in medical tasks that aim to improve efficiency, diagnosis and prognosis. This review focuses on the state of the art of AI applications in cardiovascular imaging. It provides an overview of the current applications and studies performed, including the potential value, implications, limitations and future directions of AI in cardiovascular imaging.It is envisioned that AI will dramatically change the way doctors practise medicine. In the short term, it will assist physicians with easy tasks, such as automating measurements, making predictions based on big data, and putting clinical findings into an evidence-based context. In the long term, AI will not only assist doctors, it has the potential to significantly improve access to health and well-being data for patients and their caretakers. This empowers patients. From a physician’s perspective, reliable AI assistance will be available to support clinical decision-making. Although cardiovascular studies implementing AI are increasing in number, the applications have only just started to penetrate contemporary clinical care.

Towards a better understanding of the association between motor skills and executive functions in 5- to 6-year-olds: The impact of motor task difficulty

Different lines of evidence suggest an association between motor skills and executive functions (EFs) in kindergarten children. Comparatively little is known about the specific nature of this relationship. In the present study, using a within-subjects design, a sample of 124 five- to six-year-old children completed 12 fine and gross motor tasks of varying nominal difficulty and three EFs tasks. We assumed that difficult motor tasks are less automated than easy motor tasks. Therefore, EFs should be involved more strongly in difficult compared to easy motor tasks. Firstly, results replicated the association between motor skills and EFs. Secondly, results provided a new and differentiated perspective on the evidence of this link. Performance on both easy and difficult fine motor tasks was significantly related to EFs. However, only performance on the difficult, but not on the easy gross motor tasks was significantly correlated with EFs. The findings demonstrate that the challenges and demands inherent in any motor task influence the magnitude of the motor–EFs link. That is, difficult (i.e., less automated) motor tasks require EFs more substantially than easy (i.e., more automated) motor tasks. Results will be discussed with regard to further candidate processes underlying the motor–EFs link.

Driving difficulties as reported by older drivers with mild cognitive impairment and without neurological impairment

Objective: Considerable evidence indicates that medical conditions prevalent among older individuals lead to impairments in visual, cognitive, or psychomotor functions needed to drive safely. The purpose of this study was to explore the factors determining driving difficulties as seen from the viewpoint of 30 older drivers with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and 30 age-matched controls without cognitive impairment.Methods: Perceptions of driving difficulties from both groups were examined using data from an extensive questionnaire. Samples of drivers diagnosed with MCI and age-matched controls were asked to report the frequency with which they experienced driving difficulties due to functional deficits and knowledge of new traffic rules and traffic signs.Results: The analysis revealed that 2 factors underlie MCI perceptions of driving difficulties, representing (1) difficulties associated with late detection combined with slowed response to relevant targets in the peripheral field of view and (2) difficulties associated with divided attention between tasks requiring switching from automatic to conscious processing particularly of long duration. The analysis for healthy controls revealed 3 factors representing (1) difficulties in estimating speed and distance of approaching vehicles in complex (attention-dividing) high-information-load conditions; (2) difficulties in moving head, neck, and feet; and (3) difficulties in switching from automatic responses to needing to use cognitive processing in new or unexpected situations.Conclusions: Though both group analyses show difficulties with switching from automatic to decision making, the difficulties are different. For the control group, the difficulty in switching involves switching in new or unexpected situations associated with high-information-load conditions, whereas this switching difficulty for the MCI group is associated with divided attention between easier tasks requiring switching. These findings underline the ability of older drivers (with MCI and without cognitive impairment) to indicate probable impairments in various driving skills. The patterns of difficulties perceived by the MCI group and the age-matched healthy control group are indicative of demanding driving situations that may merit special attention for road designers and road safety engineers. They may also be considered in the design of older drivers’ fitness to drive evaluations, training programs, and/or vehicle technologies that provide for older driver assistance.

Humans Exploit Robust Locomotion by Improving the Stability of Control Signals

Is the control of movement less stable when we walk or run in challenging settings? Intuitively, one might answer that it is, given that adding external (e.g. rough terrain) or internal (e.g. age-related impairments) constraints to locomotion makes our movements less stable. Here, we investigated how young and old humans synergistically activate muscles during locomotion when different perturbation levels are introduced. Of these control signals, called muscle synergies, we analyzed the stability over time. Surprisingly, we found that both external and internal perturbations force the central nervous system to produce muscle activation patterns that are more stable. These outcomes show that robust locomotion in challenging settings is achieved by increasing the stability of control signals, whereas easier tasks allow for more unstable control.

Earn More Tomorrow: Overconfident Income Expectations and Consumer Indebtedness

This paper examines whether biased income expectations due to overconfidence lead to higher levels of debt-taking. In a lab experiment, participants can purchase goods by borrowing against their future income. We exogenously manipulate income expectations by letting income depend on relative performance in hard and easy quiz tasks. We successfully generate biased income expectations and show that participants with higher income expectations initially borrow more. Overconfident participants scale back their consumption after feedback. However, at the end of the experiment they remain with higher debt levels, which represent real financial losses. To assess the external validity, we find further evidence for the link between overconfidence and borrowing behavior in a representative survey (GSOEP-IS).

When stereotype threat makes me more or less intelligent: The informative role of emotions in effort mobilization and task performance.

Studies have shown that affective states could be used as diagnostic information for the assessment of situational demands and that, as such, they can regulate resource mobilization. Accordingly, it was found that negative feelings cause overestimation of situational demands, which then leads to effort mobilization during performance on easy tasks but disengagement on difficult tasks. The present research investigated whether this emotion-motivation link could explain the usual differences in achievement on easy and difficult tasks under stereotype threat (ST). In Study 1, participants in ST, no-ST, and no-ST with fear induction conditions had to resolve a series of easy logical problems. As expected, ST and no-ST-fear groups reported higher effort investment and achieved better performance than the no-ST group. In the following two studies, the no-ST-fear condition was replaced by an ST condition in which the informative potential of threat-related feelings was prevented before the task performance. Although participants under ST reported similar elevation in anxiety, the expected increase in easy task performance (Study 2) and decrease in difficult task performance (Study 3) were observed only in the standard ST groups. Taken together, our findings suggest that threat-related feelings could govern motivational processes and account for the effect of ST.

A Reference Architecture for Ontology Engineering Web Environments

Ontology authoring, maintenance and use are never easy tasks, mostly due to the complexity of real domains and how they dynamically change as well as different background possessed by modellers about methodologies and formal languages. However, although the needs for ontologies are well-understood, not less important is to provide editing tools to manipulate and understand them. In this context, this work proposes and documents a reference architecture for such tools running in web environments. Moreover, it provides the rationale for boosting the collaborative development of a novel tool based on this architecture, named crowd. Previous surveys reveal that few Web-based ontology engineering environments have been developed and in addition, almost all of them are mere visualisers, with limited graphical features and lacking inference services
