More than 500 scientists have notified NASA that they are considering submitting proposals to participate in a new, high‐priority, solar‐terrestrial exploration program called Origins of Plasma in the Earth's Neighborhood (OPEN), J. K. Alexander, program study scientist, reports. The respondents represent over 100 different institutions, including universities, private industry, and government laboratories, from the United States and 14 foreign countries.Scheduled for the mid‐80's, the ambitious program would place a network of spacecraft around the earth in order to study the flow of matter and energy through the solar wind, the earth's magnetosphere, and the earth's ionized upper atmosphere.
