Nitrogen-Mediated Promotion of Cobalt-Based Oxygen Evolution Catalyst for Practical Anion-Exchange Membrane Electrolysis.

Scarce and expensive iridium oxide is still the cornerstone catalyst of polymer-electrolyte membrane electrolyzers for green hydrogen production because of its exceptional stability under industrially relevant oxygen evolution reaction (OER) conditions. Earth-abundant transition metal oxides used for this task, however, show poor long-term stability. We demonstrate here the use of nitrogen-doped cobalt oxide as an effective iridium substitute. The catalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and negligible activity decay after 1000 h of operation in an alkaline electrolyte. Incorporation of nitrogen dopants not only triggers the OER mechanism switched from the traditional adsorbate evolution route to the lattice oxygen oxidation route but also achieves oxygen nonbonding (ONB) states as electron donors, thereby preventing structural destabilization. In a practical anion-exchange membrane water electrolyzer, this catalyst at anode delivers a current density of 1000 mA cm-2 at 1.78 V and an electrical efficiency of 47.8 kW-hours per kilogram hydrogen.

Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) Materials Based on Earth-Abundant Transition Metal Complexes: Synthesis, Design and Applications.

Materials exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) based on transition metal complexes are currently gathering significant attention due to their technological potential. Their application extends beyond optoelectronics, in particular organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs), and include also photocatalysis, sensing, and X-ray scintillators. From the perspective of sustainability, earth-abundant metal centers are preferred to rarer second- and third-transition series elements, thus determining a reduction in costs and toxicity but without compromising the overall performances. This review offers an overview of earth-abundant transition metal complexes exhibiting TADF and their application as photoconversion materials. Particular attention is devoted to the types of ligands employed, helping in the design of novel systems with enhanced TADF properties.

Oxidation of Ammonia Catalyzed by a Molecular Iron Complex: Translating Chemical Catalysis to Mediated Electrocatalysis.

Ammonia is a promising candidate in the quest for sustainable, clean energy. With its capacity to serve as an energy carrier, the oxidation of ammonia opens avenues for carbon-neutral approaches to address worldwide growing energy needs. We report the catalytic chemical oxidation of ammonia by an Earth-abundant transition metal complex, trans-[LFeII(MeCN)2][PF6]2, where L is a macrocyclic ligand bearing four N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) donors. Using triarylaminium radical cations in MeCN, up to 182 turnovers of N2 per Fe were obtained from chemical catalysis with an extremely low loading of the Fe catalyst (0.043 mM, 0.004 mol % catalyst). This chemical catalysis was successfully transitioned to mediated electrocatalysis for the oxidation of ammonia. Molecular electrocatalysis by the Fe catalyst and the mediator (p-MeOC6H4)3N exhibited a catalytic half-wave potential (Ecat/2) of 0.18 V vs [Cp2Fe]+/0 in MeCN, and achieved 9.3 turnovers of N2 at an applied potential of 0.20 V vs [Cp2Fe]+/0 at -20 °C in controlled-potential electrolysis, with a Faradaic efficiency of 75%. Based on computational results, the catalyst undergoes sequential oxidation and deprotonation steps to form [LFeIV(NH2)2]2+, and thereafter bimetallic coupling to form an N-N bond.

Long Excited-State Lifetimes in Three-Coordinate Copper(I) Complexes via Triplet-Triplet Energy Transfer to Pyrene-Decorated Isocyanides.

There has been much effort to improve excited-state lifetimes in photosensitizers based on earth-abundant first-row transition metals. Copper(I) complexes have gained significant attention in this field, and in most cases, sterically driven approaches are used to optimize their lifetimes. This study presents a series of three-coordinate copper(I) complexes (Cu1-Cu3) where the excited-state lifetime is extended by triplet-triplet energy transfer. The heteroleptic compounds feature a cyclohexyl-substituted β-diketiminate (CyNacNacMe) paired with aryl isocyanide ligands, giving the general formula Cu(CyNacNacMe)(CN-Ar) (CN-dmp = 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide for Cu1; CN-pyr = 1-pyrenyl isocyanide for Cu2; CN-dmp-pyr = 2,6-dimethyl-4-(1-pyrenyl)phenyl isocyanide for Cu3). The nature, energies, and dynamics of the low-energy triplet excited states are assessed with a combination of photoluminescence measurements at room temperature and 77 K, ultrafast transient absorption (UFTA) spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. The complexes with the pyrene-decorated isocyanides (Cu2 and Cu3) exhibit extended excited-state lifetimes resulting from triplet-triplet energy transfer (TTET) between the short-lived charge-transfer excited state (3CT) and the long-lived pyrene-centered triplet state (3pyr). This TTET process is irreversible in Cu3, producing exclusively the 3pyr state, and in Cu2, the 3CT and 3pyr states are nearly isoenergetic, enabling reversible TTET and long-lived 3CT luminescence. The improved photophysical properties in Cu2 and Cu3 result in improvements in activity for both photocatalytic stilbene E/Z isomerization via triplet energy transfer and photoredox transformations involving hydrodebromination and C-O bond activation. These results illustrate that the extended excited-state lifetimes achieved through TTET result in newly conceived photosynthetically relevant earth-abundant transition metal complexes.

Efficient and stable NiMo alloy nanoparticles on ZSM-5 for alkene hydrosilylation

The hydrosilylation of alkene substrates bearing additional functionalities is difficult to achieve by heterogeneous non-noble catalysts and has not been extensively realized with heterogeneous earth-abundant transition metals. Herein, we report NiMo alloy nanoparticles (NPs) supported on ZSM-5 zeolite, which exhibits high activity and selectivity for the hydrosilylation of functionalized terminal and internal alkenes. Compared with the corresponding monometallic counterparts, the Ni3Mo/ZSM-5 catalyst shows a distinct enhancement in the hydrosilylation of alkene. The key to the catalytic performance is the formation of the NiMo alloy, where the electrons are transferred from Mo to Ni. The NiMo alloy NPs have been verified by XRD, XPS and TEM analysis, and further characterized by ICP, BET, NH3-TPD, and H2-TPR. In addition, the Ni3Mo/ZSM-5 catalyst exhibits good reusability for the hydrosilylation reaction with wide substrate scope.

Modification of NiSe2 Nanoparticles by ZIF-8-Derived NC for Boosting H2O2 Production from Electrochemical Oxygen Reduction in Acidic Media

The two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e− ORR) has emerged as an attractive alternative for H2O2 production. Developing efficient earth-abundant transition metal electrocatalysts and reaction mechanism exploration for H2O2 production are important but remain challenging. Herein, a nitrogen-doped carbon-coated NiSe2 (NiSe2@NC) electrocatalyst was prepared by successive annealing treatment. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between the NiSe2 nanoparticles and NC, the 2e− ORR activity, selectivity, and stability of NiSe2@NC in 0.1 M HClO4 was greatly enhanced, with the yield of H2O2 being 4.4 times that of the bare NiSe2 nanoparticles. The in situ Raman spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that the presence of NC was beneficial for regulating the electronic state of NiSe2 and optimizing the adsorption free energy of *OOH, which could enhance the adsorption of O2, stabilize the O-O bond, and boost the production of H2O2. This work provides an effective strategy to improve the performance of the transition metal chalcogenide for 2e− ORR to H2O2.

Earth Abundant Transition Metal Catalysts: New and Efficient Tools for Hydrophosphination and Oxyphosphination of Alkenes and Alkynes

Hydrophosphination and oxyphosphination are two important topical reactions in order to prepare organophosphorus derivatives from unsaturated derivatives such as alkenes and alkynes in a more sustainable fashion. Noticeably, metal catalysed versions have shown great interest and efficiency. By contrast, the use of earth abundant transition metal based catalysts for such transformations is less reported, even if there is a growing interest during the last decade. This review article reports and highlights recent developments using manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel and copper based catalysts for hydro‐ and oxyphosphination, notably exhibiting the selectivity, functional group tolerance, milder conditions and catalyst design. Even if significant progresses were made, the scopes are still rather limited (mainly focused on activated olefins such as styrenes) and chemo‐ and stereo‐selectivity issues still have to be solved, notably for asymmetric transformations. Of interest, the use of visible light including blue one as activator emerged giving promising and stimulating results at ambient conditions.

On the Capabilities of Transition Metal Carbides for Carbon Capture and Utilization Technologies.

The search for cheap and active materials for the capture and activation of CO2 has led to many efforts aimed at developing new catalysts. In this context, earth-abundant transition metal carbides (TMCs) have emerged as promising candidates, garnering increased attention in recent decades due to their exceptional refractory properties and resistance to sintering, coking, and sulfur poisoning. In this work, we assess the use of Group 5 TMCs (VC, NbC, and TaC) as potential materials for carbon capture and sequestration/utilization technologies by combining experimental characterization techniques, first-principles-based multiscale modeling, vibrational analysis, and catalytic experiments. Our findings reveal that the stoichiometric phase of VC exhibits weak interactions with CO2, displaying an inability to adsorb or dissociate it. However, VC often exhibits the presence of surface carbon vacancies, leading to significant activation of CO2 at room temperature and facilitating its catalytic hydrogenation. In contrast, stoichiometric NbC and TaC phases exhibit stronger interactions with CO2, capable of adsorbing and even breaking of CO2 at low temperatures, particularly notable in the case of TaC. Nevertheless, NbC and TaC demonstrate poor catalytic performance for CO2 hydrogenation. This work suggests Group 5 TMCs as potential materials for CO2 abatement, emphasizes the importance of surface vacancies in enhancing catalytic activity and adsorption capability, and provides a reference for using the infrared spectra as a unique identifier to detect oxy-carbide phases or surface C vacancies within Group 5 TMCs.

Unlocking the Metalation Applications of TMP-powered Fe and Co(II) bis(amides): Synthesis, Structure and Mechanistic Insights.

Typified by LiTMP and TMPMgCl.LiCl, (TMP=2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide), s-block metal amides have found widespread applications in arene deprotonative metalation. On the contrary, transition metal amides lack sufficient basicity to activate these substrates. Breaking new ground in this field, here we present the synthesis and full characterisation of earth-abundant transition metals M(TMP)2 (M=Fe, Co). Uncovering a new reactivity profile towards fluoroarenes, these amide complexes can promote direct M-H exchange processes regioselectively using one or two of their basic amide arms. Remarkably, even when using a perfluorinated substrate, selective C-H metalation occurs leaving C-F bonds intact. Their kinetic basicity can be boosted by LiCl or NBu4Cl additives which enables formation of kinetically activated ate species. Combining spectroscopic and structural studies with DFT calculations, mechanistic insights have been gained on how these low polarity metalation processes take place. M(TMP)2 can also be used to access ferrocene and cobaltocene by direct deprotonation of cyclopentadiene and undergo efficient CO2 insertion of both amide groups under mild reaction conditions.

Highly efficient Cu-Fe containing prussian blue analogs (PBAs) for excellent electrocatalytic activity towards overall water splitting

Hydrogen generation by water electrolysis is considered a clean, green, and renewable approach for sustainable energy demands and environmental management. The efficient use of earth-abundant transition metal catalysts is cost-effective and limits the usage of noble metal catalysts like IrO2, RuO2, and Pt/C. The PBAs (Prussian Blue Analogs) are a class of transition metal hexacyanoferrates that can be tailored for specific electrochemical reactions. Both iron and copper are well-proven transition metals for catalytic activities owing to their aptitude to achieve much-pronounced reactant transformations under minor circumstances, as well as their environmental friendliness, cyclability, and long-term durability at 10 mA cm−2 in 1.0 M KOH, the greenly synthesized Fe8Cu2CN (PBAs) on NF (Nickel foam) displays a low overpotential of 150 mV (118 mV dec−1) for HER (Hydrogen Evolution Reaction) and 290 mV (112 mV dec−1) for OER (Oxygen Evolution Reaction). Fe8Cu2CN displays ultra-stable behavior (150 h) with a slight current loss of 4.2 % for OER and 3.4 % for HER, respectively. The interaction of Fe, Cu, and CN (cyanide) enhances the rate of reaction kinetics. The designing of a water electrolyzer that delivers 10 mA cm−2 at 1.60 V is made possible with the help of the improved bifunctional catalyst Fe8Cu2CN/NF. The Fe8Cu2CN/NF//Fe8Cu2CN/NF exhibits long-last durability (over 180 h) with a negligible current reduction of 5.4 %. The improved effectiveness of the synthesized catalyst is demonstrated by the solar water splitting at 1.66 V. These findings suggest that Fe8Cu2CN/NF//Fe8Cu2CN/NF can be used to produce large quantities of H2 at very affordable prices.

Tuning NaCo(II) Bimetallic Cooperativity to Perform Co-H Exchange / C-F Bond Activation Processes in Polyfluoroarenes.

Recent advances in cooperative chemistry have shown the potential of heterobimetallic complexes combining an alkali-metal with an earth abundant divalent transition metal for the functionalisation of synthetically relevant aromatic molecules via deprotonative metalation. Pairing sodium with cobalt (II), here we provide an overview of the reactivity of bimetallic [NaCo(HMDS)3] [HMDS = N(SiMe3)2] towards C-H and C-F functionalisation of a wide range of perfluorinated molecules. These studies also uncover the enormous potential of this heterobimetallic base to perform Co-H exchanges with excellent selectivity and exceptional stoichiometric control as well as shedding light on the key role played by the alkali-metal.

Co-N-C axially coordination regulated H2O2 selectivity via water medicated recombination of solute •OH: A new route

The cobalt, earth abundant transition metal, embedded in nitrogen doped carbon material as single atom site (Co-N-C) has been manifested as promising electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst, however the unsatisfying production selectivity has hampered its widespread applications. Herein, the H2O2 selectivity of Co-N-C catalyst has been tailored with Co axial functional groups. Thermodynamically, the selectivity is regulated due to the fine-tuning of the adsorption of the key reaction intermediates (ΔG*OOH), and five functional groups, including −O, –OH, –CN, −CH3 and −SO3, endow the Co-N-C catalyst with superior H2O2 selectivity. Importantly, we unravel a new water medicated recombination of solute •OH reaction pathway for H2O2 production, which was the result of dissociation of *HOOH in explicit water environment. That is, two •OH species reaction in the liquid environment which originated from the creaking of *OOH intermediates due to the weakened O-O bond by the interaction with surrounding water. This study provides foundational understanding for the ORR catalytic mechanism at the electrochemical interface and opens up new avenues for rational design of targeted high efficiency electrocatalysts.

Nanostructured NiMoO4 electrode materials for efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Bifunctional electrocatalysts derived from earth-abundant transition metals are a promising substitute for noble metals in general water electrolysis, but their low activity and short durability limit their application. Herein, a nickel molybdate nanoparticles decorated on nickel foam (NiMoO4/NF NPs) electrode was fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method at three different time intervals (6, 12, and 24 h) and verified for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The constructed electrodes exhibited high OER activity in 1.0 M KOH with overpotentials of 315 mV, 290 mV and 320 mV for NiMoO4-6 h, NiMoO4-12 h, and NiMoO4-24 h, respectively. In addition, the NiMoO4-12 h electrodes displayed remarkable durability with a negligible reduction of 1.28 % at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 for 200 h. This research work delivers a new pathway to improve the electrocatalytic behaviour of the catalysts by synergistically moderating the inherent electrical conductivity, efficient surface moieties, and surface reaction.

Molecular and single-atom catalysts based on earth-abundant transition metals for the electroreduction of CO2 to C1

The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide driven by renewable energy sources represents a crucial pathway for CO2 conversion and utilization, offering a viable approach for achieving sustainable carbon neutralization. Recent advancements in the design and comprehension of catalytic materials and electrolyte systems have steadily enhanced the performance of CO2 electroreduction (CO2ERR). Among the promising materials for CO2 electroreduction, transition metals, such as manganese, nickel, iron, and cobalt, have gained prominence due to their availability in contrast to expensive noble metals. This review delves into the more recent advances on the utilization of molecular catalysts and single-atom catalysts (SACs) for the conversion of CO2 into carbon monoxide and other C1 molecules. The utilization of catalysts based on organometallic molecular complexes has demonstrated notable efficiency. This approach enables the fine-tuning of the electrical and coordination characteristics of the metal center, thereby enhancing metal utilization, reducing poisoning events, and allowing for selectivity control. While much of the research has traditionally focused on homogeneous CO2 electroreduction, recent years have seen increasing attention towards the heterogenization of molecular catalysts. The main organometallic complexes presented in this review are cobalt and iron porphyrin, cobalt phtalocyanine and manganese bipyridine, anchored on carbon-based electrodes. Moreover, single-atom catalysts have emerged as promising candidates for driving CO2ERR, due to their exceptional performance. Among these catalysts, the single-atom Metal-Nitrogen-Carbon (M-N-C) structure stands out as particularly promising. Additionally, the incorporation of nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen to dope the carbon support can ensure a uniform distribution of the atomic metal within the catalyst. Here, iron, cobalt and nickel SACs are outlined, presenting diverse support materials and operating conditions. Both SACs and molecular catalysts have demonstrated commendable Faradaic efficiencies, indicating their capability to convert CO2 into CO with a high degree of selectivity. These findings suggest that SACs, with their single-atom configurations, and molecular catalysts, with their tailored molecular structures, offer viable and comparable routes for advancing the CO2ERR.

Challenging Task of Ni-Catalyzed Highly Regio-/Enantioselective Semihydrogenation of Racemic Tetrasubstituted Allenes via a Kinetic Resolution Process.

The first earth-abundant transition metal Ni-catalyzed highly regio- and enantioselective semihydrogenation of racemic tetrasubstituted allenes via a kinetic resolution process as a challenging task was well established. This protocol furnishes expedient access to a diversity of structurally important enantioenriched tetrasubstituted allenes and chiral allylic molecules with high regio-, enantio-, and Z/E-selectivity. Remarkably, this semihydrogenation proceeded with one carbon-carbon double bond of allenes, which was regioselective complementary to the Rh-catalyzed asymmetric version. Deuterium labeling experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to reveal the reasonable reaction mechanism and explain the regio-/stereoselectivity.

Photoredox matching of earth-abundant photosensitizers with hydrogen evolving catalysts by first-principles predictions.

Photoredox properties of several earth-abundant light-harvesting transition metal complexes in combination with cobalt-based proton reduction catalysts have been investigated computationally to assess the fundamental viability of different photocatalytic systems of current experimental interest. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations using several GGA (BP86, BLYP), hybrid-GGA (B3LYP, B3LYP*), hybrid meta-GGA (M06, TPSSh), and range-separated hybrid (ωB97X, CAM-B3LYP) functionals were used to calculate relevant ground and excited state reduction potentials for photosensitizers, catalysts, and sacrificial electron donors. Linear energy correction factors for the DFT/TD-DFT results that provide the best agreement with available experimental reference results were determined in order to provide more accurate predictions. Among the selection of functionals, the B3LYP* and TPSSh sets of correction parameters were determined to give the best redox potentials and excited states energies, ΔEexc, with errors of ∼0.2eV. Linear corrections for both reduction and oxidation processes significantly improve the predictions for all the redox pairs. In particular, for TPSSh and B3LYP*, the calculated errors decrease by more than 0.5V against experimental values for catalyst reduction potentials, photosensitizer oxidation potentials, and electron donor oxidation potentials. Energy-corrected TPSSh results were finally used to predict the energetics of complete photocatalytic cycles for the light-driven activation of selected proton reduction cobalt catalysts. These predictions demonstrate the broader usefulness of the adopted approach to systematically predict full photocycle behavior for first-row transition metal photosensitizer-catalyst combinations more broadly.

Recent Progress of Transition Metal Selenides for Electrochemical Oxygen Reduction to Hydrogen Peroxide: From Catalyst Design to Electrolyzers Application.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a highly value-added and environmental-friendly chemical with various applications. The production of H2O2 by electrocatalytic 2e- oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has emerged as a promising alternative to the energy-intensive anthraquinone process. High selectivity Catalysts combining with superior activity are critical for the efficient electrosynthesis of H2O2. Earth-abundant transition metal selenides (TMSs) being discovered as a classic of stable, low-cost, highly active and selective catalysts for electrochemical 2e- ORR. These features come from the relatively large atomic radius of selenium element, the metal-like properties and the abundant reserves. Moreover, compared with the advanced noble metal or single-atom catalysts, the kinetic current density of TMSs for H2O2 generation is higher in acidic solution, which enable them to become suitable catalyst candidates. Herein, the recent progress of TMSs for ORR to H2O2 is systematically reviewed. The effects of TMSs electrocatalysts on the activity, selectivity and stability of ORR to H2O2 are summarized. It is intended to provide an insight from catalyst design and corresponding reaction mechanisms to the device setup, and to discuss the relationship between structure and activity.

Post transition metal substituted Keggin-type POMs as thin film chemiresistive sensors for H2O and CO2 detection.

Chemiresitive sensing allows the affordable and facile detection of small molecules such as H2O and CO2. Herein, we report a novel class of Earth-abundant post transition metal substituted Keggin polyoxometalates (POMs) for chemiresistive sensing applications, with conductivities up to 0.01 S cm-1 under 100% CO2 and 65% Relative Humidity (RH).

First-row transition metal carbonates catalyze the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction: iron is master of them all.

In pursuing green hydrogen fuel, electrochemical water-splitting emerges as the optimal method. A critical challenge in advancing this process is identifying a cost-effective electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution on the anode. Recent research has demonstrated the efficacy of first-row transition metal carbonates as catalysts for various oxidation reactions. In this study, Earth-abundant first-row transition metal carbonates were electrodeposited onto nickel foam (NF) electrodes and evaluated for their performance in the oxygen evolution reaction. The investigation compares the activity of these carbonates on NF electrodes against bare NF electrodes. Notably, Fe2(CO3)3/NF exhibited superior oxygen evolution activity, characterized by low overpotential values, i.e. Iron is master of them all (R. Kipling, Cold Iron, Rewards and Fairies, Macmillan and Co. Ltd., 1910). Comprehensive catalytic stability and durability tests also indicate that these transition metal carbonates maintain stable activity, positioning them as durable and efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction.
