AI-powered assessment tools for E-learning: Enhancing feedback and grading systems

Recently, there has been increased incorporation of artificial intelligence in the education system, which has impacted the practice and use of assessment in learning. To this end, the following is a paper discussing the role of AI in grading, instant feedback, and personalized adaptive testing. The paper also covers the ability of AI to minimize bias and introduce fairness while grading, as well as the ability that comes with the mass LMS platforms. Moreover, this paper discusses the issues and guidelines regarding the ethical use of AI in education: data protection, the problem of automated prejudice in AI, and the replacement of human tutors. When these seemingly unimportant problems are solved, and institutions admit that ethical practices are critical, such opportunities for Artificial Intelligence can be harnessed to make learning more efficient and fairer. At last, integrating AI into learning benefits teachers and students: it enhances the teaching and learning processes. It creates the prospects for the future global exposition of technology with human creativity to enrich learners.

Flipped Classroom in the Czech Republic

The Flipped Classroom approach, advocated since the 1990s by scholars such as Alison King, Eric Mazur, Maureen J. Lage, Glenn J. Platt, and Michael Treglia, involves students independently learning theoretical content before class via e-learning resources like video recordings and self-directed programmes. This allows educators to use class time for discussions and scaffolding as students engage in problem-solving tasks individually and in groups. Notable milestones include the establishment of Khan Academy in 2004, MEF University's adoption of flipped teaching in 2011, the founding of the Flipped Learning Network in 2016, and the extensive use of e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper examines implementing a flipped classroom project in environmental education in the Czech Republic. In 2018, three academics from different universities initiated the flipping of environmental education courses. The research, framed as combined action research, employed a questionnaire as the primary tool. Data were collected twice: in 2021, at the end of mandatory online teaching due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and in 2024, after three years of regular education. Responses from 288 students were analysed using standard statistical methods, while open-ended responses from 82 students and interviews with four university lecturers were qualitatively assessed. The findings underscore the benefits of electronic materials, particularly students’ appreciation for interactive elements, time flexibility, and the ability to review content multiple times. Students' willingness to watch digital lectures at home decreased post-pandemic, and the perceived efficacy of this method was higher among students during the pandemic. Although students find the flipped classroom method effective, they favour its combination with traditional teaching methods. Educators, cognisant of the method's potential, interpret these results as indicative of “virtual environment fatigue”, noting students’ reluctance to prepare in advance as a significant barrier. They advocate for the widespread implementation of the flipped classroom model across faculties to optimise instruction and eliminate the need for switching between traditional and flipped approaches. This study offers a practical example and insights for educators seeking to integrate the flipped classroom methodology with e-learning tools into their teaching practices.

Thought-Controlled Computer Applications: A Brain–Computer Interface System for Severe Disability Support

This study introduces an integrated computational environment that leverages Brain–Computer Interface (BCI) technology to enhance information access for individuals with severe disabilities. Traditional assistive technologies often rely on physical interactions, which can be challenging for this demographic. Our innovation focuses on creating new assistive technologies that use novel Human–Computer interfaces to provide a more intuitive and accessible experience. The proposed system offers four key applications to users controlled by four thoughts: an email client, a web browser, an e-learning tool, and both command-line and graphical user interfaces for managing computer resources. The BCI framework translates ElectroEncephaloGraphy (EEG) signals into commands or events using advanced signal processing and machine learning techniques. These identified commands are then processed by an integrative strategy that triggers the appropriate actions and provides real-time feedback on the screen. Our study shows that our framework achieved an 82% average classification accuracy using four distinct thoughts of 62 subjects and a 95% recognition rate for P300 signals from two users, highlighting its effectiveness in translating brain signals into actionable commands. Unlike most existing prototypes that rely on visual stimulation, our system is controlled by thought, inducing brain activity to manage the system’s Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). It switches to P300 mode for a virtual keyboard and text input. The proposed BCI system significantly improves the ability of individuals with severe disabilities to interact with various applications and manage computer resources. Our approach demonstrates superior performance in terms of classification accuracy and signal recognition compared to existing methods.

Assessing the Credibility and Motivation in E-Learning during the Covid-19 Education Shift

The purpose of this study is to assess the complex relationship between e-learning credibility and student motivation during COVID-19. Online education is growing, so educators, institutions, and governments must understand student motivation and e-learning attitudes. The study examines student COVID-19 management to discover crucial components. We explain the difficulty of e-learning credibility and its large impact on student motivation to help educators and scholars. Four research hypotheses guided the investigation; a descriptive survey design and an online questionnaire were utilized to collect data from 480 Saudi higher education students. Because of these factors, this study examines e-learning methods, tools, and approaches in today's complicated landscape. How e-learning systems motivate and engage students depends on interaction, adaptability, and reliability. This case study combines rapid educational technology advancement with pandemic-level disruption. It examines how e-learning will change post-pandemic education. The study's findings are noteworthy given the COVID-19 pandemic's widespread use of e-learning. Politicians and schools utilize them to engage pupils and enhance e-learning amid emergencies. This study may provide teachers, administrators, and instructional designers with confidence in e-learning. It may improve online learning. E-learning credibility and motivation should be studied across institutions and student populations.

SAPPNet: students’ academic performance prediction during COVID-19 using neural network

A variety of reasons have made it more difficult for educators and tutors to anticipate students’ performance. Numerous researchers have used various predictive models to identify students who may be at-risk of dropping out early. Additionally, these methods were used to forecast final semester grades based on various datasets. However, these prediction models still fall short of meeting educational management requirements. In this paper, we propose the deep learning (DL) based model named students academic performance prediction network (SAPPNet) to predict the students’ grades. We consider the questionnaire-based Jordan University dataset which contains demographic information, usage of digital tools before and after COVID-19, sleep times before and after COVID-19, social interaction, psychological state, and academic performance. SAPPNet consists of spatial convolution modules which are designed to extract spatial dependencies includes categorical and numerical attributes that represent static features (gender, level/year, age, digital tools used before and after COVID-19, psychological condition using prolonged e-learning tools) and temporal module for temporal dependencies involves sequences that capture changes before and after COVID-19. Additionally, we also try to implement classical machine learning (ML) models including support vector machine, k nearest neighbor, decision tree, and random forest, and DL models named artificial neural network, convolutional neural network, long short-term memory, and students learning prediction network. Simulation results show that SAPPNet achieved the best performance compared to state-of-the-art methods, with an accuracy, precision, recall, and an F1-score of 93%\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$93\\%$$\\end{document}. The proposed model with spatial and temporal modules improves the prediction performance, and it implies new aspect of the educational dataset.

Developing and evaluating an e-learning and e-assessment tool for organic chemistry in higher education

A convincing e-learning system for higher education should offer adequate usability and not add unnecessary (extraneous) cognitive load. It should allow teachers to switch easily from traditional teaching to flipped classrooms to provide students with more opportunities to learn and receive immediate feedback. However, an efficient e-learning and technology-enhanced assessment tool that allows generating digital organic chemistry tasks is yet to be created. The Universities of Bonn and Duisburg-Essen are currently developing and evaluating an e-learning and technology-enhanced assessment tool for organic chemistry. This study compares the effectiveness of traditional paper-pencil-based and digital molecule-drawing tasks in terms of student performance, cognitive load, and usability—factors that all contribute to learning outcomes. Rasch analysis, t-tests, and correlation analyses were used for evaluation, revealing that the developed system can generate digital organic chemistry tasks. Students performed equally well on simple digital and paper-pencil molecule-drawing tasks when they received an appropriate introduction to the digital tool. However, using the digital tool in two of three studies imposes a higher extraneous cognitive load than using paper and pencil. Nevertheless, the students rated the tool as sufficiently usable. A significant negative correlation between extraneous load and tool usability was found, suggesting room for improvement. We are currently concentrating on augmenting the functionality of the new e-learning tool to increase its potential for automatic feedback, even for complex tasks such as reaction mechanisms.

Attitudes of lecturers towards e-learning: BA ISAGO university

In Botswana e-learning is still in its infancy with most universities currently implementing different strategies to integrate e-learning into the teaching and learning process. A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate whether the variables age, gender, training to use e-learning tools, e-learning experience, internet access, and computer skills were associated with the lecturer’s attitudes towards e-learning. The study consisted of thirty-eight randomly selected lecturers at BA ISAGO University, Gaborone campus. The data was collected using a closed-ended questionnaire with items that seek to ascertain their attitudes towards e-learning. To test out the study hypothesis descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations and independent samples t-test were computed. The results indicated that half of the participants had positive attitudes towards e-learning. Proving that e-learning was an acceptable teaching method to be utilised at this tertiary education institution. The study further showed that age and gender were not significantly associated with the lecturers’ attitudes towards e-learning. Also, the results indicated that there was no significant relationship between attitudes towards e-learning and training to use e-learning tools, e-learning experience, internet access as well as computer skills. It was therefore concluded that these variables had no impact on attitudes of lecturers towards e-learning as lecturers had become competent and confident in using computers as part of teaching methodology at BA ISAGO University. It is crucial for this university to strengthen the digital culture through training and support, and motivational strategies to build positive attitude towards e-learning.

Decentralized Identity Management for Metaverse-Enhanced Education: A Literature Review

As we transition into the era of Web 3.0, where decentralized information and user privacy are paramount, emerging technologies are reshaping the way in which personal data are managed. This paper focuses on decentralized identity management (DID) in the metaverse, particularly within the education sector, which has rapidly embraced digital tools for e-learning, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), and virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR) are increasingly integrated into educational platforms, raising questions about privacy, security, and interoperability. This literature review examines the current landscape of DID in metaverse-based educational applications. Through a systematic methodology, relevant academic papers were identified, filtered, and analyzed based on four key criteria: standardization, interoperability, application scalability, and security/privacy considerations. The paper provides a comparative analysis of these papers to assess the maturity of DID implementations, highlight existing challenges, and suggest future research directions in the intersection of decentralized identity and educational metaverse applications.

CONDITIONS FOR SUCCESSFUL INTEGRATION OF TRADITIONAL AND E-LEARNING IN LANGUAGE EDUCATION

E-learning is a valuable platform for providing a variety of teaching methods to different categories of students, which should be used together with traditional classes in addition to the curriculum. The successful integration of e-learning tools into language classes requires a certain level of digital competence for both teachers and students. Teaching is becoming more adaptable, priority is given to students, teachers can use technology to automate assessment and monitor progress. In order to identify the problems of language learning in the context of digitalization to ensure effective integration of traditional and e-learning, as well as to identify the points of interaction between traditional and e-learning, a questionnaire was conducted on the impact of digitalization on language learning. The digital transformation of education involves updating the methodological patterns of the organization of education. Using an online learning system does not mean that you need to abandon traditional learning. Traditional forms of education are radically lagging behind the modern perception of information. An increasing variety of Internet resources poses the task of conducting comprehensive research on the possibilities and features of using these learning tools in the educational process. Integration in foreign language education means a harmonious combination of effective teaching approaches that develop four skills based on the use of digital resources. The integration of the best methods of traditional and digital learning can significantly improve the effectiveness of language education. The introduction of digital resources into the educational process has given rise to many new types of educational work that were impossible with traditional methods. Prospects for Using E-Learning Tools to Implement the Concept of “Lifelong Learning”

This article examines the current state and prospects of utilising e-learning tools within lifelong learning. The study aims to identify methods for leveraging various e-learning platforms to enhance adult lifelong education and assess the potential effectiveness of electronic tools in advancing "lifelong learning." The research employed a case study approach, analysing existing scientific literature and focusing on nine popular adult e-learning tools, such as Coursera, EdX, Moodle, Udemy, and Google Classroom. To achieve this, 50 scientific articles from various databases were reviewed, and the characteristics and potential applications of popular e-learning tools and the role of artificial intelligence in education were investigated. The findings were systematically organised and presented in tables and diagrams, showcasing different categories and applications of e-learning tools for lifelong learning. The study categorises these e-learning tools and highlights their features and applications in the context of lifelong learning. Additionally, the study explores the integration of artificial intelligence in e-learning, discussing its various applications and how it can facilitate adult education. The e-learning tools selected for adult education are divided into four categories: Open Educational Resources (OER), Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) (digital), and Communication tools (MS Teams, Zoom, and Google Classroom). This research contributes to lifelong learning by demonstrating the potential of selected online platforms and programs to increase the accessibility, inclusivity, and personalisation of lifelong learning tailored to individual learner needs.

Gamification as an e-learning tool: A Literature Review

The purpose of the article is to highlight the status of gamification of the educational process as an element of e-learning. The use of the game space in the educational process requires compliance with a number of specific conditions, so the task of the study is to determine the organisational and functional characteristics of gamification. The methodology involves the use of the principles of qualitative research, which analyses scientific views (53 sources were analysed) on the use of gamification in the educational process. The systematic literature review is conducted using the PRISMA 2020 flowchart, which allowed for a variable selection of sources relevant to the study of the current problem. The results of the study indicate the following trends in the positioning of gamification tools in the e-learning cluster: auxiliary status of gamification (42%), reinforcing status of the game factor (39%), alternative status of game-based learning (15%), negative feedback on the actualisation of gamification (4%). The literature review confirms the trend of involving a game case in the educational paradigm. At the same time, the role and format of gamification does not have a clear algorithm for implementation and functioning in learning activities, which indicates the need to streamline this cluster of e-learning. The scientific and pedagogical discourse today does not have a clear answer to the general positioning of gamification in the educational system. Institutionally, gamification is enshrined in educational strategies due to global trends in the digitalisation of society, but at the organisational and functional level, there are contradictions about the status of the game space in the structure of e-learning. The study identified two cases of game-based learning platforms in the innovative educational space: an autonomous online game-based learning format (54%) and a game tool as an element of the digital learning environment (46%). The scientific novelty of the study is focused on the correlation of indicators of quantitative increase in the level of gamification and qualitative indicators of the effectiveness of this e-learning case. Prospects for scientific research are focused on developing a strategy for the development of gamification in the educational sphere in general and in the context of e-learning in particular. Conclusion. Thus, gamification has gained positions in the e-learning system and is forming its own niche in the educational paradigm. The rapid digitalisation of the socio-cultural space causes the diversity and disorder of the organisation of the e-learning game case (especially in the context of the educational and pedagogical status), which is expressed in the scientific discourse of the last five years.

Innovative Approaches of E-Learning in College Education: Global Experience

Thanks to the rapid development of digital and information and communication technologies, colleges around the world are actively using new models of e-learning. The purpose of this study was to analyze modern e-learning tools used in colleges in different countries. The PRISMA approach was used for this study. Based on the previously formed 7 criteria related to the content, methodology, and scientific novelty of the study, 50 items of current literature were selected for analysis. The date range was from 2012 to 2023. The results demonstrate the importance of using electronic technologies in modern colleges. They develop the formation of not only theoretical but also practical skills. For example, the use of tools such as virtual augmented reality, or simulation technologies contribute to the development of practical skills in students. The proposed results have shown that micro-education, social education and gamification of education are integral elements of modern educational practice based on innovations. The conclusions summarize that the most common electronic technologies are remote platforms, mobile applications, and interactive technologies. For practical specialties less popular, but important are simulation technologies and virtual reality. In addition, the college's e-learning platform makes use of augmented reality, blockchain technology and analytical tools. All of these technologies support the growth of e-learning at the college level.

The Role of e-Learning During Martial Law: The Ukrainian Experience

The research aim is to reveal the role of e-learning during Martial law by the example of Ukrainian experience. It focuses on the following objectives: to outline the advantages and challenges of e-learning; to describe the peculiarities of implementation of e-learning at the different levels of education; to analyse teaching methods used to integrate e-learning; and to develop the recommendations to implement e-learning. The systemic literature review was carried out to provide an objective summary of the current topic. All sources were published between March, 2022 and May, 2024. The literature focused on e-learning in Ukraine or similar conflict-affected areas. All articles were available in English or Ukrainian. To analyse the data, the synthesis method was applied. The findings proved that e-learning became an important tool during emergencies, providing continuity in education. It was explained that e-learning is introduced at primary, secondary, and higher levels of education. It includes synchronous and asynchronous models. Certain teaching methods are used to implement e-learning effectively. They relate to interactive simulations, multimedia content, gamification, discussion forums, and personalized learning. These methods, combined, create a dynamic e-learning environment that enhances students’ educational outcomes, particularly during emergencies. The implementation of e-learning in Ukraine during Martial law requires careful consideration of the recommendations: enhancement of digital infrastructure, adoption of flexible learning, formation of digital literacy, support of mental health, using interactive methods, increase of content quality, regular assessment, encouragement of positive teacher-student interaction, implementation of adaptive learning tools, and protection of students and educators' data. The research outcomes on the role of e-learning during Martial law can be used for the development of strategic plan of implementation of e-learning tools within the learning process in the regions affected by war or other emergencies. Also, the study can contribute to future educational practices, encouraging the development of more innovative learning solutions.

Impact of E-learning Tools (Moodle, Microsoft Teams, Zoom) on Student Engagement and Achievement at Jordan Universities

This study examines the impact of digital learning platforms—Moodle, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom—on student engagement and academic achievement at the University of Jordan. The study explores students’ familiarity with these e-learning tools and their effect on self-directed learning and performance. Over three months, data was collected from 450 students through an online questionnaire comprising closed questions. The analysis employed multiple regression models to consider variables such as gender, age, prior computer literacy, attitude towards emerging technology, learning preferences, and the implementation of e-learning within the university. Additionally, a qualitative content analysis identified the advantages and disadvantages of e-learning from the students’ perspectives. The findings indicate that strategic implementation of e-learning platforms significantly influences student perceptions more than individual contextual factors. Students appreciated the connectivity and accessibility provided by these platforms. Those with prior computer knowledge and those studying emerging technologies showed a particularly positive attitude towards e-learning. The study concludes that engagement with e-learning tools markedly enhances self-study habits and academic performance, underscoring the importance of integrating digital platforms into educational strategies.

The influence of e-learning on exam performance and the role of achievement goals in shaping learning patterns

Digital learning environments provide opportunities to support learning in higher education. However, it is yet unclear why and how learners use these opportunities. We propose that learners’ achievement goals and their beliefs regarding the instrumentality of e-learning tools to achieve those goals are predictive for learning behavior within digital learning environments. Furthermore, we assume learning behavior characterized by longer overall learning time, more distributed learning, and less learning delay predicts higher exam performance. To test these hypotheses, we analyzed log-file data of 91 university students who had used an intelligent tutoring system as exam preparation in a pre-registered study. Beyond the overall predictive validity of the intelligent tutoring system, we found a negative association between learning delay and exam performance. Achievement goals predicted learning time and time distribution, an association that was partly moderated by perceived instrumentality. This suggests that goals and beliefs are important puzzle pieces for understanding e-learning (behavior).

This research explores the opportunities and challenges in implementing information technology (IT) innovations in Indonesia's education sector. The study examines key variables such as infrastructure, internet access, and teacher training, using qualitative methodologies including case studies and literature reviews. Data were collected from various sources over the past decade. Findings highlight that while IT can enhance education quality and access, particularly through e-learning and digital tools, significant barriers remain due to Indonesia's geographical diversity and unequal infrastructure. The research suggests strategies for overcoming these challenges, such as accelerated infrastructure development, increased research funding, and comprehensive teacher training programs. These insights aim to inform policy and practice, enhancing IT integration in Indonesian education.
