Quality Results of Cotton Fabric Coloring with Mangsi (Phyllanthus Reticulatus) Fruit Extract

The research was done to analyze the quality of the coloring result of mangsi (phyllanthus reticulatus) fruit extract as natural dyes in cotton fabric dyeing. Extraction method was carried out through maceration process using some solvents namley water, ethanol, acidic ethanol, methanol, and acidic methanol in a ratio of 1:10 with pre-mordanting and fixation using mordant alum, calcium carbonate, and ferrous sulphate. The conducted observations included color direction test, color opacity test and color fastness to soap washing test. The result of color direction was brown to yellow-orange and blue to dark blue. The value of color opacity on cotton fabrics was in the “medium” to “very opaque” color category. The resulting value of color fastness to soap washing test was in the “good” to “poor” category. The dyeing results on cotton fabric generated an even color.

Study of Dyeing With Natural Extract of Butterfly Pea Flowers (Clitoria Ternatea) on Cotton Fabrics

Objective: This study aims to optimize the dye extraction and dyeing variables in cotton fabrics using dried Butterfly Pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea), in order to evaluate its potential as a natural dye in the dyeing of cotton fabrics. Theoretical Framework: This research is presented based on fundamentals related to dyeing with natural dyes, dye extraction and pre-mordanting procedures, as well as studies related to the dyeing of cotton fabrics. Method: This research was carried out by varying the dye extraction temperature and dyeing parameters, which were documented and optimized. The pre-mordanting process was also used with 5 different biomordants, at the end the washing and friction fastness properties of the fabrics dyed with and without the pre-mordanting process were observed. Results and Discussion: The results showed that the best dye removal temperature was 70°C and the optimized dyeing conditions were a temperature of 50°C, time of 60 minutes and pH 3. In general, the use of biommordants did not promote improvements in solidity interactions. Research Implications: The use of natural dye made from Butterfly Pea flowers in dyeing provides a blue color to the cotton fabric, which is difficult to achieve. Limonene biosolvent-based non-aqueous dyeing medium for salt-free and alkali-free rhamnolipid (RL) biosurfactant reverse micellar dyeing of cotton fabric with reactive dyes

The feasibility of using different forms of limonene biosolvents as dyeing medium in rhamnolipid (RL) biosurfactant-based reverse micellar dyeing system for cotton fabrics is investigated, with different dyeing profiles. Experimental results reveal that limonene-dyed fabrics can achieve generally higher colour yield than water-dyed fabrics while samples dyed by one-step dyeing method could obtain higher colour yield, but poorer relative unlevelness index (RUI) values when compared with samples dyed by two-step method. The CIE L*a*b* value and reflectance of water-dyed and limonene-dyed samples were examined. The pH value of aqueous and non-aqueous dye liquor was measured. SEM images of limonene-dyed cotton fabrics and TEM images of reverse micelle morphology were evaluated. Washing and crocking fastness of the dyed samples were also assessed. The resulting evidence validate that limonene is feasible for reverse micellar reactive dyeing of cotton fabric with the use of RL biosurfactant and it can be one of the alternative solvents, making the dyeing process more natural, more biodegradable and environmentally more sustainable.

Eco-friendly and low-cost phytodyeing for wool, cotton and polyester textile materials using Parthenocissus Quinquefolia L. Fruit Extracts

This study investigates the extraction of natural colorant from fresh fruits of Parthenocissus quinquefolia L. and the application of the extracted dye to wool yarn, cotton, and polyester fabrics in the presence and absence of various mordants. The effect of mordant type on the dyeing quality with different mordanting methods was examined. Iron sulfate, tin chloride, alum, copper sulfate, and potassium dichromate were used as mordant. The effects of these mordants on the color of the dyed samples were investigated in terms of CIELab (L*, a*, b*) and K/S values. The light, washing and rubbing fastness of the dyed samples were evaluated according to ISO standards. While dyeing wool yarn without mordant produces reddish brown, and dyeing with mordant produces a wide range of colors from green to purple, blue and lilac tones are obtained in cotton fabric dyeing, and green, purple and brown tones are obtained in polyester fabric dyeing. While polyester fabrics are dyed with synthetic dyes at 130 oC, in this study they were dyed with natural dyes at 90 oC. As a result of dyeing, colors with high fastness are generally obtained.

One-bath dyeing and antibacterial finishing of cotton fabric using reactive dye and silver chloride: a sustainable approach

One-bath dyeing and antibacterial finishing of cotton fabric using reactive dye as colorant and silver chloride (AgCl) as an antibacterial agent was conducted to streamline the process and enhance its economic efficiency. The effectiveness of the antibacterial agent in reactive dyeing of cotton fabric, was evaluated through exhaust method with 0.5% AgCl and continuous (pad dry cure) method with 5 g/l of AgCl, utilizing various dye concentrations (1%, 3%, 5% for exhaust; 1g/l, 3g/l, 5g/l for pad dry cure) according to a standard reactive dye recipe. Characterization of the one-bath dyed, and antibacterial finished cotton fabric was performed using K/S values to determine the optimal dye shade concentration and antibacterial activity was evaluated using agar diffusion method. It was observed that the exhaust method revealed an optimum dye concentration at (AgCl 0.5% and dye 5%), while pad dry cure method showedoptimal dye concentration at (AgCl 5g/l and dye 5g/l). Antibacterial tests were conducted on the optimal specimens from both methods (AgCl 0.5%, 0.2%, dye 0.5% for exhaust; dye 5g/l, AgCl 5g/l, 2g/l for pad dry cure), showcasing resistance against bacterial growth. While inhibition zones were observed on treated specimens of the exhaust method, whereas the treated specimens of the pad dry cure method exhibited complete resistance to bacterial growth around the specimen.

Preparation of Nano-Sized Eucalyptus Leaves Extract and its Application on Cotton as Natural Dyes and Antibacterial Agents

Nano-emulsions of Eucalyptus globulus leaves extract in 96% ethanol and 96% methanol were successfully prepared using the method of homogenization at various speeds of 13,000 rpm, 15,000 rpm and 17,000 rpm, with the addition of non-ionic surfactant to prevent agglomeration. A phytochemical analysis showed the presence of tannin, phenol and flavonoids. The size of the resulting nano-emulsions was measured using a particle size analyser (PSA) prior to the dyeing of cotton fabrics using the two-dips-two-nips method. Antibacterial tests were carried out on the extracts and dyed fabrics. The results showed that nano-sized particles (< 100 nm) were obtained from all extracts in both solvents used at all speeds. All dyed fabrics showed good levelness in a pale-brown colour with K/S values < 1 for all samples under spectrophotometric measurement. The colour fastness of the dyed fabrics to washing and rubbing were good to very good, with grey scale values ranging between 4/5–5. Antibacterial tests in Staphylococcus aureus bacterium showed that the eucalyptus leaves extract solution exhibited antibacterial ability, as evidenced by the formation of clear zones around the wells. Much better antibacterial activity was demonstrated by the dyed fabrics. Changing the particle size to nano increased the effectiveness of the antibacterial activity of the Eucalyptus globulus. Results showed that the nano-sized eucalyptus leaves extract demonstrated a more significant antibacterial activity than dyeability.

Dyeing kinetics and thermodynamics of mono-chlorotriazine reactive dye in recycled wastewater

Purpose This study aims to elucidate the dyeing kinetics and thermodynamic relationships of CI Reactive Red 24 (RR24) on cotton fabrics, achieve the recycling of inorganic salts and water resources and obtain comprehensive data on color parameters, fastness and other characteristics of fabrics dyed with the recycled dyeing residual wastewater. Design/methodology/approach The dyeing wastewater obtained through advanced oxidation technology was used as a medium for dyeing cotton fabrics with RR24. The absorbance value of the dyeing residue served as an evaluation index, and the relevant kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were calculated based on this absorbance. The color parameters and fastness of the fabric samples were measured to compare the performance of different dyeing media. Findings Dyeing cotton with RR24 in both media follows pseudo-second-order kinetics. When dyeing with wastewater media, the dye adsorption in the first 45 min increased by 0.082–1.29 g/kg compared with conventional dyeing. Furthermore, the half-dyeing time was shortened by 4.19–11.99 min and the equilibrium adsorption amount was reduced by 0.277–0.302 g/kg. The adsorption of RR24 on cotton fabrics conformed to the Freundlich model. Fabrics dyed using recycled wastewater exhibit a deeper color, with reduced red light and enhanced blue light, resulting in an overall deeper apparent color. Originality/value These dyeing kinetics and thermodynamic properties are beneficial for comprehending and interpreting the dyeing performance and behavior of reactive dyes in dyeing wastewater. They lay a theoretical foundation for the treatment and recycling of dyeing wastewater.

Down flow jet-loop reactor with NF-RO membrane system for the treatment of textile wastewater

Textile industries are significant consumers of fresh water, extensively using it for washing and dyeing processes. The effluent from these operations contains various chemicals, including complex synthetic dyes, NaCl and Na2SO4 necessitating efficient treatment before discharge into water bodies. Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) technology facilitates complete water recovery but leads to substantial solid waste accumulation, which poses challenges for reutilization. This study introduces an innovative approach using a Downflow Jet Loop Reactor combined with ozone and activated carbon to effectively remove color and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) from textile effluent. Furthermore, a combination of Nanofiltration (NF) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane systems ensures comprehensive purification by effectively separating inorganic salts. Experimental results demonstrated a maximum color removal of 81.25 % from the textile effluent. The fabricated PSF/PVDF NF membrane exhibited exceptional capacity for rejecting divalent salts. Additionally, the RO reject, which is a concentrated solution of salts and contaminants, was successfully reused in a dye bath for cotton fabric dyeing. This approach highlights the practicality, sustainability, and resource conservation potential within the textile production cycle. It underscores the importance of a comprehensive water treatment strategy for achieving sustainable textile production.

Reactive Dyes Bearing Bis(Monochlorotriazine) Group: Synthesis, Photophysical Properties and Realization of Salt‐Free Dyeing

AbstractA series of novel reactive dyes D1–D3 based on vinamidinium salt were designed and synthesized. Bis(monochlorotriazine) was introduced as the reactive group and sodium sulfonate was the water‐soluble group. Their photophysical properties were studied systematacially. The strong and sharp ground‐state absorption peak in the 250–320 nm range in the UV‐vis absorption spectrum of the aqueous solution could be attributed to the 1π–π* transition by the parent structure of the dyes, and the relatively broad absorption peak in the range of 300–650 nm could be attributed to the 1π–π* mixed intramolecular charge transfer. By applying this series of reactive dyes to the dyeing of four fabrics (silk, cotton, polyester/cotton blends, and polyester), the dyeing depths were in the range of 5.2–28.6 under salt‐free conditions. The results show that D3 with higher planarity can increase the dyeing depth. At length, fastening tests on dyed cotton fabrics and silk showed that this series of reactive dyes had a color fastness between grades 3 and 5 for abrasion and soap‐washing. In summary, these reactive dyes could be potential dyes for salt‐free dyeing applications.

Mercerisation Followed by Wet on Wet Reactive Dyeing of Cotton Fabric

The commonly employed textile wet processing methods are singeing, de-sizing, scouring, bleaching, mercerising, dying, printing, and finishing. However, these methods are more time-consuming and require a lot of energy, manpower, and chemicals. Therefore, this research aims to develop a semi-continuous processing route that minimizes these problems. In this study, two dying routes were employed. The first is a control group, which was done by conventional mercerisation and dyeing procedures, whereas the second is a semi-continuous experimental group, which has been employed by mercerisation followed by wet-on-wet (WOW) reactive dying. That is, after mercerisation, the fabric, which contains the optimum alkali concentration, goes to dyeing without washing. Washing and titration were performed to determine the optimum alkaline concentration in the fabric at a specific washing cycle. Fabrics that were washed at different cycles after mercerisation were dyed, and their washing fastness, degree of dye exhaustion, fixation, and colour strength were evaluated, and they had a slightly greater colour strength than conventionally dyed fabrics. This is because with a wet-on-wet dyeing procedure, the fabric is relaxed after mercerisation, which allows it to absorb more dye, and the leftover alkali in the fabric is used to fix the dye to the cellulose. The study shows that the optimal washing cycle for passing the optimum alkali concentration is one. Furthermore, the optimal amount of alkali remaining in the fabrics is 3–3.5%. As compared to the conventional dyeing process, this process is economical.

Enhancing cotton fabric dyeing: Optimizing Mordanting with natural dyes and citric acid

This study investigates the optimization of fabric dyeing using natural dyes extracted from Clitoria ternatea, Cudrania javanensis, and Hibiscus sabdarifa by enhancing the mordanting process with citric acid. The principle of adding citric acid is as a crosslinker agent between cotton fabric and dye through an esterification reaction. A central composite design (CCD) of the response surface methodology (RSM) is employed to optimize parameters. Three mordanting variations and dyeing parameters, such as temperature and time, are considered. Results indicate that pre-mordanting yields superior outcomes, with optimal temperature and time at 65 °C and 82 min, respectively. Cotton fabric dyed with Cudrania javanensis and citric acid exhibits the highest color durability. This study successfully demonstrates the effectiveness of pre-mordanting, meta-mordanting, and post-mordanting methods with optimized conditions for achieving optimal coloring outcomes, particularly highlighting the efficacy of citric acid as a crosslinking agent.

Natural Dyeing of Cotton, Wool and Viscose Fabrics with Sodium Copper Chlorophyllin

This study investigates the optimal dyeing concentrations of cotton, wool, and viscose fabrics with sodium copper chlorophyllin (SCC). Using SSC above the optimal concentration increases the amount of SCC in the wastewater, which is a disadvantage. Pre-finished 100% cotton, wool and viscose 1 x 1 rib knitted fabrics were dyed with varying SCC concentrations. Optimal dyeing concentrations were determined using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, showing dye absorption decreasing as SCC concentration increases. Equilibrium was reached at approximately 7 ml/L for cotton and viscose, and 3 ml/L for wool. Color measurement values and K/S values of the dyed samples were obtained according to the CIELab color system. The K/S values of dyed cotton, viscose, and wool fabrics rose as the concentration of SCC increased, reaching a peak at 9 ml/L for viscose and 12 ml/L for cotton and wool. Rubbing and perspiration fastness were rated good to excellent.

Solvent-assisted salt-free reactive dyeing of cotton fabric

The objective of this study was to establish a solvent-assisted salt-free dyeing method for cotton fabric utilizing commercially available reactive dyes. In this study, the feasibility of substituting water as the dyeing medium with environmentally friendly solvents, specifically ethanol (EtOH), isopropyl alcohol (IPA), and propanol (PrOH), was investigated. Eight commercial reactive dyes, each possessing distinct chemical structures, were examined with various dyeing characteristics including exhaustion, fixation, and fastness properties, in the presence of various alcohols. However, solvent-assisted dyeing exhibited comparable or enhanced color strength (K/S) values, exhaustion, and fixation rates compared to conventional aqueous dyeing. For instance, the RR35 dye demonstrated a substantial increase in K/S values with PrOH, EtOH, and IPA, ranging from 115 to 369% improvement. The substitution of alcohol for water did not affect the wash, rub, and light-color fastness properties, as these properties remained consistently excellent. Solvent-assisted salt-free dyeing of cotton fabrics offers a promising solution to address the environmental impacts of traditional water-based dyeing methods by eliminating the requirement for water and salt. Overall, this study presents a solvent-assisted salt-free dyeing technique and contributes to the field by offering detailed insights into its mechanisms and performance. Our research has the potential to reduce water consumption, eliminate salt usage, and mitigate environmental pollution.

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) leaves as natural colorant for cotton dyeing using an ecofriendly approach toward industrial progress.

In the industrial sector, vegetable residual materials have received attention in the production of bio-colorant for textile dyeing. The current research endeavor is centered on investigating the possibility of using sugar beet leaves as a natural source of dye for the purpose of dyeing cotton fabrics. Different extraction methods were utilized to isolate the bio-colorant present in sugar beet residual material, and the most favorable colorant yield was obtained using a 5% methanolic KOH solution. For optimal dyeing results, the cotton fabric performed dyeing for a duration of 45 min at a temperature of 60 °C, using a salt solution concentration of 6 g/100 mL and 50 mL of the extracted dye solution. Characterization of dye using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed the presence of quercetin in the leaf extract. For the creation of a range of color variations, mordants that were chemical in nature, such as tannic acid, iron sulfate, potassium dichromate, and copper sulfate, as well as mordants that were bio-based, such as onion peel, pomegranate peel, henna, golden shower bark, and turmeric, were employed in harmony. In comparison, the utilization of bio-mordants resulted in darker shades that exhibited enhanced color intensity and superior color fastness properties with the value of 4-5 for wash, 4 for wet rubbing, 4-5 for dry rubbing, and 4-5 for light. The findings of this study hold significant value in terms of ecofriendly waste management and contribute to advancements in the industrial sector by utilizing waste residual materials as a natural source of colorants.

Acid-base sensitive fabrics is considered as one of interesting features for smart textile applications; therefore, this work presents a simple treatment of cotton fabric with 3-Chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (CHPTAC) followed by dyeing with curcumin dye. On the contrary, the dyed cationized cotton fabric exhibited a rough surface owing to the curcumin dye adsorption onto the surface of cationized cotton fabric. The interesting acid-base sensitivity of the dyed (dyed cationized cotton) fabric was observed and the color of dyed cationized cotton was changed from brownish yellow color to bright yellow color in acidic pH up to 6 while by increase the pH than 8 the color changed from brownish yellow to reddish brown color. The color change can easily be observed by naked eye. It was found that, dyed cationized cotton fabric exhibit the highest bactericidal activity compared with the undyed cationized cotton fabric, and untreated cotton fabric, which possessed the lowest antibacterial effect. The results show that a more serious case for dyeing cotton fabric leads to bacterial cell membrane permeability than untreated cotton fabric or a control group. Furthermore, the research showed that untreated, cationized and dyed/cationized cotton fabrics are unaffected by negative reactions. The dyeing process increased the functional performance of cotton fabric, as they have better anti-adhering capability. This technique can be tailored for biomedical especially with wound dressing, which designed to prevent the biofilm formation. Results obtained in this work recommend that dyed cationized cotton fabric with curcumin is an excellent pH sensitive for wound dressing material that can prevent the bacterial infection and control of biofilm adhesion.

A traditional technique for colouring textiles, yarns, or fibres is called "natural dyeing," and it involves employing dyes made from plants, insects, and minerals. The usage of this age-old technique predates synthetic dyes by thousands of years, as documented by numerous cultures across the globe. In this procedure, colour compounds are extracted from natural sources and applied to textiles using a variety of methods, such as resist dyeing, direct application, or immersion dyeing. Natural dyes are typically more environmentally friendly and biodegradable than synthetic ones, which frequently include harsh chemicals and may have adverse effects on the environment. The relationship between natural colouring and traditional workmanship as well as sustainability is one of its most alluring features. It encourages a greater respect for nature and the use of renewable resources. A vast spectrum of colours can also be produced by natural dyes, however they might be more delicate and complex than their synthetic equivalents. Although natural dyeing has numerous benefits, there are drawbacks as well, including color fastness, consistency, and the availability of dye supplies. However, artists and textile aficionados are still exploring and expanding the potential of natural dyeing techniques in modern contexts through careful experimentation, sharing of knowledge, and creativity. The goal of the current endeavour was to employ the extract that was previously described in a sustainable way. Thus, an attempt is made to colour cotton material at different temperatures utilising alum as a colourant extract and a mordant. To extract colour, the coconut husks were soaked and then cooked for half an hour. The colourant extract and mordants were used to dye the fabric for an hour at a moderate temperature. Tests were conducted on the coloured cloth samples to determine their resistance to light, rubbing, and cleaning. Beneficial results were found. The study's findings so suggest that eco-friendly cotton fabric dyeing has a promising future.
