Millimeter gap contrast as a probe for turbulence level in protoplanetary disks

Turbulent motions are believed to regulate angular momentum transport and influence dust evolution in protoplanetary disks. Measuring the strength of turbulence is challenging through gas line observations because of the requirement for high spatial and spectral resolution data, and an exquisite determination of the temperature. In this work, taking the well-known HD 163296 disk as an example, we investigated the contrast of gaps identified in high angular resolution continuum images as a probe for the level of turbulence. With self-consistent radiative transfer models, we simultaneously analyzed the radial brightness profiles along the disk major and minor axes, and the azimuthal brightness profiles of the B67 and B100 rings. By fitting all the gap contrasts measured from these profiles, we constrained the gas-to-dust scale height ratio $\Lambda$ to be $3.0_{-0.8}^{+0.3}$, $1.2_{-0.1}^{+0.1}$ and ${\ge}\,6.5$ for the D48, B67 and B100 regions, respectively. The varying gas-to-dust scale height ratios indicate that the degree of dust settling changes with radius. The inferred values for $\Lambda$ translate into a turbulence level of $\alpha_{\rm turb}\,{<}\,3\times10^{-3}$ in the D48 and B100 regions, which is consistent with previous upper limits set by gas line observations. However, turbulent motions in the B67 ring are strong with $\alpha_{\rm turb}\,{\sim}1.2\,{\times}\,10^{-2}$. Due to the degeneracy between $\Lambda$ and the depth of dust surface density drops, the turbulence strength in the D86 gap region is not constrained.

DustPy: A Python Package for Dust Evolution in Protoplanetary Disks

Many processes during the evolution of protoplanetary disks and during planet formation are highly sensitive to the sizes of dust particles that are present in the disk: the efficiency of dust accretion in the disk and volatile transport on dust particles, gravoturbulent instabilities leading to the formation of planetesimals, or the accretion of pebbles onto large planetary embryos to form giant planets are typical examples of processes that depend on the sizes of the dust particles involved. Furthermore, radiative properties like absorption or scattering opacities depend on the particle sizes. To interpret observations of dust in protoplanetary disks, a proper estimate of the dust particle sizes is needed. We present DustPy: a Python package to simulate dust evolution in protoplanetary disks. DustPy solves gas and dust transport including viscous advection and diffusion as well as collisional growth of dust particles. DustPy is written with a modular concept, such that every aspect of the model can be easily modified or extended to allow for a multitude of research opportunities.

Thermal evolution of protoplanetary disks: from β-cooling to decoupled gas and dust temperatures

Aims. We explore the long-term evolution of young protoplanetary disks with different approaches to computing the thermal structure determined by various cooling and heating processes in the disk and its surroundings. Methods. Numerical hydrodynamics simulations in the thin-disk limit were complemented with three thermal evolution schemes: a simplified β-cooling approach with and without irradiation, where the rate of disk cooling is proportional to the local dynamical time; a fiducial model with equal dust and gas temperatures calculated taking viscous heating, irradiation, and radiative cooling into account; and a more sophisticated approach allowing decoupled dust and gas temperatures. Results. We found that the gas temperature may significantly exceed that of dust in the outer regions of young disks thanks to additional compressional heating caused by the infalling envelope material in the early stages of disk evolution and slow collisional exchange of energy between gas and dust in low-density disk regions. However, the outer envelope shows an inverse trend, with the gas temperatures dropping below that of dust. The global disk evolution is only weakly sensitive to temperature decoupling. Nevertheless, separate dust and gas temperatures may affect the chemical composition, dust evolution, and disk mass estimates. Constant-β models without stellar and background irradiation fail to reproduce the disk evolution with more sophisticated thermal schemes because of the intrinsically variable nature of the β-parameter. Constant-β models with irradiation more closely match the dynamical and thermal evolution, but the agreement is still incomplete. Conclusions. Models allowing separate dust and gas temperatures are needed when emphasis is placed on the chemical or dust evolution in protoplanetary disks, particularly in subsolar metallicity environments.

A Lagrangian model for dust evolution in protoplanetary disks: formation of wet and dry planetesimals at different stellar masses

We introduce a new Lagrangian smooth-particle method to model the growth and drift of pebbles in protoplanetary disks. The Lagrangian nature of the model makes it especially suited to following characteristics of individual (groups of) particles, such as their composition. In this work we focus on the water content of solid particles. Planetesimal formation via streaming instability is taken into account, partly based on previous results on streaming instability outside the water snowline that were presented in a recent publication. We validated our model by reproducing earlier results from the literature and apply our model to steady-state viscous gas disks (with constant gas accretion rate) around stars with different masses. We also present various other models where we explore the effects of pebble accretion, the fragmentation velocity threshold, the global metallicity of the disk, and a time-dependent gas accretion rate. We find that planetesimals preferentially form in a local annulus outside the water snowline, at early times in the lifetime of the disk (≲105yr), when the pebble mass fluxes are high enough to trigger the streaming instability. During this first phase in the planet formation process, the snowline location hardly changes due to slow viscous evolution, and we conclude that assuming a constant gas accretion rate is justified in this first stage. The efficiency of converting the solids reservoir of the disk to planetesimals depends on the location of the water snowline. Cooler disks with a closer-in water snowline are more efficient at producing planetesimals than hotter disks where the water snowline is located further away from the star. Therefore, low-mass stars tend to form planetesimals more efficiently, but any correlation may be overshadowed by the spread in disk properties.

The accumulation and trapping of grains at planet gaps: Effects of grain growth and fragmentation

We model the dust evolution in protoplanetary disks with full 3D, Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), two-phase (gas+dust) hydrodynamical simulations. The gas+dust dynamics, where aerodynamic drag leads to the vertical settling and radial migration of grains, is consistently treated. In a previous work, we characterized the spatial distribution of non-growing dust grains of different sizes in a disk containing a gap-opening planet and investigated the gap's detectability with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Here we take into account the effects of grain growth and fragmentation and study their impact on the distribution of solids in the disk. We show that rapid grain growth in the two accumulation zones around planet gaps is strongly affected by fragmentation. We discuss the consequences for ALMA observations.

Dust in protoplanetary disks: observations

Solid particles, usually referred to as dust, are a crucial component of interstellar matter and of planet forming disks surrounding young stars. Despite the relatively small mass fraction of ≈1% (in the solar neighborhood of our galaxy; this number may differ substantially in other galaxies) that interstellar grains represent of the total mass budget of interstellar matter, dust grains play an important role in the physics and chemistry of interstellar matter. This is because of the opacity dust grains at short (optical, UV) wavelengths, and the surface they provide for chemical reactions. In addition, dust grains play a pivotal role in the planet formation process: in the core accretion model of planet formation, the growth of dust grains from the microscopic size range to large, cm-sized or larger grains is the first step in planet formation. Not only the grain size distribution is affected by planet formation. Chemical and physical processes alter the structure and chemical composition of dust grains as they enter the protoplanetary disk and move closer to the forming star. Therefore, a lot can be learned about the way stars and planets are formed by observations of dust in protoplanetary disks. Ideally, one would like to measure the dust mass, the grain size distribution, grain structure (porosity, fluffiness), the chemical composition, and all of these as a function of position in the disk. Fortunately, several observational diagnostics are available to derive constrains on these quantities. In combination with rapidly increasing quality of the data (spatial and spectral resolution), a lot of progress has been made in our understanding of dust evolution in protoplanetary disks. An excellent review of dust evolution in protoplanetary disks can be found in Testi et al. (2014).

Planetesimal formation via sweep-up growth at the inner edge of dead zones

The early stages of planet formation are still not well understood. Coagulation models have revealed numerous obstacles to the dust growth, such as the bouncing, fragmentation and radial drift barriers. We study the interplay between dust coagulation and drift in order to determine the conditions in protoplanetary disk that support the formation of planetesimals. We focus on planetesimal formation via sweep-up and investigate whether it can take place in a realistic protoplanetary disk. We have developed a new numerical model that resolves spatial distribution of dust in the radial and vertical dimension. The model uses representative particles approach to follow the dust evolution in protoplanetary disk. The coagulation and fragmentation of solids is taken into account using Monte Carlo method. A collision model adopting the mass transfer effect, that can occur for different-sized dust aggregate collisions, is implemented. We focus on a protoplanetary disk including a pressure bump caused by a steep decline of turbulent viscosity around the snow line. Our results show that sufficient resolution of the vertical disk structure in dust coagulation codes is necessary to obtain adequately short growth timescales, especially in the case of a low turbulence region. We find that a sharp radial variation of the turbulence strength at the inner edge of dead zone promotes planetesimal formation in several ways. It provides a pressure bump that efficiently prevents the dust from drifting inwards. It also causes a radial variation in the size of aggregates at which growth barriers occur, favoring the growth of large aggregates via sweeping up of small particles. In our model, by employing an ad hoc alpha viscosity change near the snow line, it is possible to grow planetesimals by incremental growth on timescales of approximately 10^5 years.

CARMA INTERFEROMETRIC OBSERVATIONS OF 2MASS J044427+2512: THE FIRST SPATIALLY RESOLVED OBSERVATIONS OF THERMAL EMISSION OF A BROWN DWARF DISK

We present CARMA 1.3 mm continuum data of the disk surrounding the young brown dwarf 2MASS J044427+2512 in the Taurus molecular cloud. The high angular resolution of the CARMA observations (0.16 arcsec) allows us to spatially resolve for the first time the thermal emission from dust around a brown dwarf. We analyze the interferometric visibilities and constrain the disk outer radius adopting disk models with power-law radial profiles of the dust surface density. In the case of a power-law index equal to or lower than 1, we obtain a disk radius in the range of about 15 - 30 AU, while larger disks are inferred for steeper radial profiles. By combining this information on the disk spatial extent with the sub-mm spectral index of this source we find conclusive evidence for mm-sized grains, or larger, in this brown dwarf disk. We discuss the implications of our results on the models of dust evolution in proto-planetary disks and brown dwarf formation.

CONSTRAINTS ON THE RADIAL VARIATION OF GRAIN GROWTH IN THE AS 209 CIRCUMSTELLAR DISK

We present dust continuum observations of the protoplanetary disk surrounding the pre-main sequence star AS 209, spanning more than an order of magnitude in wavelength from 0.88 to 9.8 mm. The disk was observed with sub-arcsecond angular resolution (0.2"-0.5") to investigate radial variations in its dust properties. At longer wavelengths, the disk emission structure is notably more compact, providing model-independent evidence for changes in the grain properties across the disk. We find that physical models which reproduce the disk emission require a radial dependence of the dust opacity \kappa_{\nu}. Assuming that the observed wavelength-dependent structure can be attributed to radial variations in the dust opacity spectral index (\beta), we find that \beta(R) increases from \beta<0.5 at \sim20 AU to \beta>1.5 for R>80 AU, inconsistent with a constant value of \beta\ across the disk (at the 10\sigma\ level). Furthermore, if radial variations of \kappa_{\nu} are caused by particle growth, we find that the maximum size of the particle-size distribution (a_{max}) increases from sub-millimeter-sized grains in the outer disk (R>70 AU) to millimeter and centimeter-sized grains in the inner disk regions (R< 70 AU). We compare our observational constraint on a_{max}(R) with predictions from physical models of dust evolution in proto-planetary disks. For the dust composition and particle-size distribution investigated here, our observational constraints on a_{max}(R) are consistent with models where the maximum grain size is limited by radial drift.

DoAr 33: a good candidate for revealing dust growth and settling in protoplanetary disks

Aims. We aim to evaluate the evolutionary stage of the circumstellar disk around DoAr 33, a T Tauri star in the Ophiuchus molecular cloud and a promising target for follow-up observations to find signs of dust evolution in protoplanetary disks.

THE mm-COLORS OF A YOUNG BINARY DISK SYSTEM IN THE ORION NEBULA CLUSTER

We present new EVLA continuum observations at 7 mm of the 253-1536 binary disk system in the Orion Nebula Cluster. The measured fluxes were combined with data in the sub-mm to derive the millimeter spectral index of each individual disk component. We show how these observations can be used to test the models of dust evolution and early growth of solids in protoplanetary disks. Our analysis indicates that the disk with lower density and higher temperature hosts larger grains than the companion disk. This result is the opposite of what predicted by the dust evolution models. The models and observational results can be reconciled if the viscosity $\alpha$-parameter differs by more than a factor of ten in the two disks, or if the distribution of solids in the disks is strongly affected by radial motions. This analysis can be applied to future high-angular resolution observations of young disks with EVLA and ALMA to provide even stronger observational constraints to the models of dust evolution in protoplanetary disks.

ELECTROSTATIC BARRIER AGAINST DUST GROWTH IN PROTOPLANETARY DISKS. II. MEASURING THE SIZE OF THE “FROZEN” ZONE

Coagulation of submicron-sized dust grains into porous aggregates is the initial step of dust evolution in protoplanetary disks. Recently, it has been pointed out that negative charging of dust in the weakly ionized disks could significantly slow down the coagulation process. In this paper, we apply the growth criteria obtained in Paper I to finding out a location ("frozen" zone) where the charging stalls dust growth at the fractal growth stage. For low-turbulence disks, we find that the frozen zone can cover the major part of the disks at a few to 100 AU from the central star. The maximum mass of the aggregates is approximately 10^{-7} g at 1 AU and as small as a few monomer masses at 100 AU. Strong turbulence can significantly reduce the size of the frozen zone, but such turbulence will cause the fragmentation of macroscopic aggregates at later stages. We examine a possibility that complete freezeout of dust evolution in low-turbulence disks could be prevented by global transport of dust in the disks. Our simple estimation shows that global dust transport can lead to the supply of macroscopic aggregates and the removal of frozen aggregates on a timescale of 10^6 yr. This overturns the usual understanding that tiny dust particles get depleted on much shorter timescales unless collisional fragmentation is effective. The frozen zone together with global dust transport might explain "slow" (\sim 10^6 yr) dust evolution suggested by infrared observation of T Tauri stars and by radioactive dating of chondrites.

The outcome of protoplanetary dust growth: pebbles, boulders, or planetesimals?

The growth processes from protoplanetary dust to planetesimals are not fully understood. Laboratory experiments and theoretical models have shown that collisions among the dust aggregates can lead to sticking, bouncing, and fragmentation. However, no systematic study on the collisional outcome of protoplanetary dust has been performed so far so that a physical model of the dust evolution in protoplanetary disks is still missing. We intend to map the parameter space for the collisional interaction of arbitrarily porous dust aggregates. This parameter space encompasses the dust-aggregate masses, their porosities and the collision velocity. With such a complete mapping of the collisional outcomes of protoplanetary dust aggregates, it will be possible to follow the collisional evolution of dust in a protoplanetary disk environment. We use literature data, perform own laboratory experiments, and apply simple physical models to get a complete picture of the collisional interaction of protoplanetary dust aggregates. In our study, we found four different types of sticking, two types of bouncing, and three types of fragmentation as possible outcomes in collisions among protoplanetary dust aggregates. We distinguish between eight combinations of porosity and mass ratio. For each of these cases, we present a complete collision model for dust-aggregate masses between 10^-12 and 10^2 g and collision velocities in the range 10^-4 to 10^4 cm/s for arbitrary porosities. This model comprises the collisional outcome, the mass(es) of the resulting aggregate(s) and their porosities. We present the first complete collision model for protoplanetary dust. This collision model can be used for the determination of the dust-growth rate in protoplanetary disks.

Gas- and dust evolution in protoplanetary disks

Context. Current models of the size- and radial evolution of dust in protoplanetary disks generally oversimplify either the radial evolution of the disk (by focussing at one single radius or by using steady state disk models) or they assume particle growth to proceed monodispersely or without fragmentation. Further studies of protoplanetary disks - such as observations, disk chemistry and structure calculations or planet population synthesis models - depend on the distribution of dust as a function of grain size and radial position in the disk. Aims. We attempt to improve upon current models to be able to investigate how the initial conditions, the build-up phase, and the evolution of the protoplanetary disk influence growth and transport of dust. Methods. We introduce a new version of the model of Brauer et al. (2008) in which we now include the time-dependent viscous evolution of the gas disk, and in which more advanced input physics and numerical integration methods are implemented. Results. We show that grain properties, the gas pressure gradient, and the amount of turbulence are much more influencing the evolution of dust than the initial conditions or the build-up phase of the protoplanetary disk. We quantify which conditions or environments are favorable for growth beyond the meter size barrier. High gas surface densities or zonal flows may help to overcome the problem of radial drift, however already a small amount of turbulence poses a much stronger obstacle for grain growth.

NUMERICAL MODELING OF THE COAGULATION AND POROSITY EVOLUTION OF DUST AGGREGATES

Porosity evolution of dust aggregates is crucial in understanding dust evolution in protoplanetary disks. In this study, we present useful tools to study the coagulation and porosity evolution of dust aggregates. First, we present a new numerical method for simulating dust coagulation and porosity evolution as an extension of the conventional Smoluchowski equation. This method follows the evolution of the mean porosity for each aggregate mass simultaneously with the evolution of the mass distribution function. This method reproduces the results of previous Monte Carlo simulations with much less computational expense. Second, we propose a new collision model for porous dust aggregates on the basis of our N-body experiments on aggregate collisions. We first obtain empirical data on porosity changes between the classical limits of ballistic cluster-cluster and particle-cluster aggregation. Using the data, we construct a recipe for the porosity change due to general hit-and-stick collisions as well as formulae for the aerodynamical and collisional cross sections. Simple coagulation simulations using the extended Smoluchowski method show that our collision model explains the fractal dimensions of porous aggregates observed in a full N-body simulation and a laboratory experiment. Besides, we discover that aggregates at the high-mass end of the distribution can have a considerably small aerodynamical cross section per unit mass compared with aggregates of lower masses. We point out an important implication of this discovery for dust growth in protoplanetary disks.

Dust evolution in protoplanetary disks

AbstractWe investigate the behaviour of dust in protoplanetary disks under the action of gas drag using our 3D, two-fluid (gas+dust) SPH code. We present the evolution of the dust spatial distribution in global simulations of planetless disks as well as of disks containing an already formed planet. The resulting dust structures vary strongly with particle size and planetary gaps are much sharper than in the gas phase, making them easier to detect with ALMA than anticipated. We also find that there is a range of masses where a planet can open a gap in the dust layer whereas it doesn't in the gas disk. Our dust distributions are fed to the radiative transfer code MCFOST to compute synthetic images, in order to derive constraints on the settling and growth of dust grains in observed disks.

Molecular Hydrogen Emission from Protoplanetary Disks. II. Effects of X‐Ray Irradiation and Dust Evolution

Detailed models for the density and temperature profiles of gas and dust in protoplanetary disks are constructed by taking into account X-ray and UV irradiation from a central T Tauri star, as well as dust size growth and settling toward the disk midplane. The spatial and size distributions of dust grains are numerically computed by solving the coagulation equation for settling dust particles, with the result that the mass and total surface area of dust grains per unit volume of the gas in the disks are very small, except at the midplane. The H2 level populations and line emission are calculated using the derived physical structure of the disks. X-ray irradiation is the dominant heating source of the gas in the inner disk and in the surface layer, while the UV heating dominates otherwise. If the central star has strong X-ray and weak UV radiation, the H2 level populations are controlled by X-ray pumping, and the X-ray-induced transition lines could be observable. If the UV irradiation is strong, the level populations are controlled by thermal collisions or UV pumping, depending on the dust properties. As the dust particles evolve in the disks, the gas temperature at the disk surface drops because the grain photoelectric heating becomes less efficient. This makes the level populations change from LTE to non-LTE distributions, which results in changes to the line ratios. Our results suggest that dust evolution in protoplanetary disks could be observable through the H2 line ratios. The emission lines are strong from disks irradiated by strong UV and X-rays and possessing small dust grains; such disks will be good targets in which to observe H2 emission.

Subaru/COMICS Study on Silicate Dust Processing around Young Low‐Mass Stars

We have obtained 8-13 ?m spectra of 30 young (1-10?Myr) low-mass pre-main-sequence stars using COMICS on the 8.2?m Subaru Telescope to examine dust evolution in protoplanetary disks. Most spectra show silicate emission features of various strengths and shapes, indicative of dust processing during the different stages of protoplanetary disk evolution. We have analyzed the observed silicate emission features using a simple model previously applied to the more massive and luminous Herbig Ae/Be systems. We determined the feature strength and shape and derived the composition and typical size of the silicate dust grains. We confirm the previously reported dependency of the silicate feature strength and shape on the grain size of the amorphous silicate dust. We examine the relation between the derived dust properties and stellar and circumstellar disk parameters, such as systemic age, luminosity of H? (LH?), disk mass, and opacity power-law index ? at radio wavelengths. A possible relation is found between silicate feature strength (grain size indicator) and the LH?, which may be an indicator of accretion activity. It implies that the turbulence induced by accretion activity may be important for grain size evolution in the disk. No clear correlation between the crystallinity and the stellar/disk parameters is found. We find that on average 5%-20% in mass of the silicate dust grains is in crystalline form, irrespective of systemic age. This latter finding supports the idea that crystalline silicate is formed at an early evolutionary phase, probably at the protostellar phase, and is remaining during the later stages.

Disk Evolution in the Orion OB1 Association

We analyze multiband photometry of a subsample of low-mass stars in the associations Ori OB1a and 1b discovered during the Centro de Investigaciones de Astronom?a (CIDA) Orion Variability Survey, which have ages of 7?10 and 3?5 Myr, respectively. We obtained UBVRCIC photometry at Mount Hopkins for six classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs) and 26 weak T Tauri stars (WTTSs) in Ori OB1a and for 21 CTTSs and two WTTSs in Ori OB1b. We also obtained L-band photometry for 14 CTTSs at Mount Hopkins and 10 and 18 ?m photometry with OSCIR at Gemini for six CTTSs; of these, all six were detected at 10 ?m, whereas only one was detected at 18 ?m. We estimate mass accretion rates from the excess luminosity at U and find that they are consistent with determinations for a number of other associations, with or without high-mass star formation. The observed decrease of mass accretion rate with age is qualitatively consistent with predictions of viscous evolution of accretion disks, although other factors can also play a role in slowing accretion rates. We compare the excesses over photospheric fluxes in H - K, K - L, and K - N with the younger sample of Taurus and find an overall decrease of disk emission from Taurus to Ori OB1b to Ori OB1a. This decrease implies that significant grain growth and settling toward the midplane has taken place in the inner disks of Ori OB1. We compare the spectral energy distribution of the star detected at both 10 and 18 ?m with disk models for similar stellar and accretion parameters. We find that the low fluxes shortward of 18 ?m of this Ori OB1b star cannot be due to the smaller disk radius expected from viscous evolution in the presence of the far-ultraviolet radiation fields from the OB stars in the association. Instead, we find that the disk of this star is essentially a flat disk, with little if any flaring, indicating a significant degree of dust settling toward the midplane, as expected from dust evolution in protoplanetary disks.

Dust Evolution in Protoplanetary Disks

AbstractThe evolution of dust particles in circumstellar disk-like structures around protostars and young stellar objects is discussed. We especially consider the coagulation of grains due to collisional aggregation and the influence of this process on the optical properties of the particles. These dust opacities are important for both the derivation of the circumstellar dust mass from submillimetre continuum observations and the dynamical behaviour of the disks.We present first results of a numerical study of the coagulation of dust grains in a turbulent protoplanetary accretion disk described by a time-dependent one-dimensional (radial) “alpha” model. The influence of grain opacity changes due to dust coagulation on the dynamical evolution of a protostellar disk is investigated. In addition, we consider the grain motion in two-dimensional disks.
