Duplex geometry has an important bearing on understanding the development of orogenic zones. Based on a published seismic section through the French Alps, the external massifs are considered to form a duplex structure as a result of basement thrusting. The duplex is restored to a uniform basement thickness, giving a model estimate of shortening of 45 km. The interpretation of this figure in terms of early Alpine crustal thinning is discussed.
