In order to estimate the true number of gaps and the detection efficiencies in ionization measurements in nuclear emulsion, it is suggested to extend to this problem the double scan method using the correlation method so as to obtain an estimate for the number of gaps coinciding in two successive scans, without having these gaps identified. The efficiencies obtained on tracks of different densities turned out to be different; this proves the dependence of the detection efficiencies on the average gap density and hence the fact that the information contained in the track in nonhomogeneous, with respect to the detection efficiency. The normalized gap density depends only weakly on the observer but shows significant differences with respect to the value obtained after correcting for scanning inefficiencies.
