In a heated building, the outflow of some heat energy through windows is inevitable and can be a waste. It is possible to recover some of this heat loss by directing ventilation fresh air along the surface of the window. A modified double glazing unit with ventilation passage has been used to investigate the reduced heat losses with various flow rates and temperature differences. It was found that the heat losses through the external pane of the double glazing with inward flow ventilation constituted only a fraction of the total heat losses through the internal pane. Comparisons therefore with the heat losses through unventilated double glazing show that a significant reduction in heat losses could be achieved.
