Summary: Impact of Donald Super's work on career education: research and practice in Quebec (Canada).In Quebec, various concepts, instruments or aspects of Super's theory have been used to conduct research and educational experiments. We report on some of these elements that have been used to identify the vocational features and needs of young and adult subjects with regard to career education, to develop the vocational exploration strategies and to assess their efficiency. Super's vocational maturity and adult career adjustment inventories are presented including those that were adapted for our population, and those constructed on the basis of his self-concept formulations.

A Context‐Rich Perspective of Career Exploration Across the Life Roles

Building on the recent contributions of Donald Super (e.g., 1980), this article presents a broadened lens with which to view theory, research, and practice in career exploration. Super's contributions on career adaptability and the life‐career rainbow (e.g., Super, 1990; Super & Knasel, 1981) were applied to current areas of ambiguity in the career exploration literature, yielding potentially useful ideas about the antecedents and consequences of career exploration. Based on an integrative analysis guided by Super's recent contributions and related conceptual innovations, a context‐rich perspective is proposed to broaden the attentional focus of discourse about career exploration. The article discusses the theoretical implications of the context‐rich view and provides suggestions for counseling practice.

The Psychological and Vocational Interest Patterns of Donald Super and John Holland

The theories of Donald Super and John Holland are the primary career development and choice approaches in use today. To the extent that the personality characteristics of a theorist have a direct bearing on the theory that he or she has constructed, a fuller understanding of the theorist is important. Although the profession knows much about the 2 approaches, less is known about the personalities of the theorists. The purpose of this article is to provide comparative data about each theorist's interests, values, and personalities on the basis of the results of 4 paper‐and‐pencil psychometric instruments that each completed. This study provides a rare glimpse into the psychological make‐up of 2 prominent theorists.

Career Assessment and the Adult Career Concerns Inventory

This article describes the Adult Career Concerns Inventory (ACCI; Super, Thompson, & Lindeman, 1988), an instrument developed by Donald Super and his colleagues for use by counselors in facilitating adult career planning and exploration. The evolution of the instrument is reviewed from the early version that attempted to measure career development to the current form that assesses adults' awareness of the tasks associated with career adaptability. Also included is a discussion of relevant studies of the instrument's psychometric properties, practical applications, and possibilities for future research.

The Thematic‐Extrapolation Method: Incorporating Career Patterns into Career Counseling

One of Donald Super's most important contributions of career counseling was the career model, the idea that one person's sequence of work positions constitutes a whole and unique career. In 1954, he advocated a method for predicting career patterns called the Thematic‐Extrapolation Method (TEM). TEM is described and summarized in three identifiable steps. Recent writings from developmental, psychodynamic, and narrative approaches to career counseling suggest innovative revisions and elaborations on the original method. A modified TEM remains a promising, but largely untried, career counseling technique.

Career Adaptability in Adults: A Construct Whose Time Has Come

This article describes Donald Super's construct of adaptability and reviews research on the construct. The review is followed by a discussion of related counseling research that uses the construct, and research in the area of organizational psychology that addresses the concept but does not use the term. The author summarizes other approaches to the need for adaptability in adult career development, and finally, presents suggestions for practitioners.

Work Values of Community College Students

Abstract Work Values are considered an important dimension of motivation for learning, and for this reason a study was made to explore their use as possible descriptive and predictive tools for counseling and individual assessment. Two major questions were explored: (1) Are there differences in work values between the sexes and among various groups of students (i.e., liberal arts, secretarial, business administration, and allied health)? and (2) Is it possible to predict college grade point average from a knowledge of students' work value scores? Donald Super's Work Values Inventory (1960) provided the 15 dimensions of the study. To determine if there were differences between groups, and whether sex was a determinant, discriminant analysis was employed.
