Synthesis of Highly Conductive Poly(3-hexylthiophene) by Chemical Oxidative Polymerization Using Surfactant Templates.

Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) was systematically synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization in chloroform with ferric chloride (FeCl3) as the oxidizing agent and various surfactants of the shape templates. The effects of 3HT: FeCl3 mole ratios, polymerization times, and surfactant types and concentrations on the electrical conductivity, particle shape and size were systematically investigated. Furthermore, dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA), p-toluenesulfonic acid (PTSA), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT) were utilized as the surfactant templates. The P3HT synthesized with DBSA at 6 CMC, where CMC stands for the Critical Micelle Concentration of surfactant, provided a higher electrical conductivity than those with PTSA, SDS and AOT. The highest electrical conductivity of P3HT using DBSA was 16.21 ± 1.55 S cm−1 in which the P3HT particle shape was spherical with an average size of 1530 ± 227 nm. The thermal analysis indicated that the P3HT synthesized with the surfactants yielded higher stability and char yields than that of P3HT without. The P3HT_DBSA electrical conductivity was further enhanced by de-doping and doping with HClO4. At the 10:1 doping mole ratio, the electrical conductivity of dP3HT_DBSA increased by one order of magnitude relative to P3HT_DBSA prior to the de-doping. The highest electrical conductivity of dP3HT_DBSA obtained was 172 ± 5.21 S cm−1 which is the highest value relative to previously reported.

Surface interactions of model microplastic particles in seawater

Microplastic is classified as fragmented polymeric particles up to 500 microns in diameter. In an aqueous system, microplastic does not always present as a single particle, and these microparticles tend to aggregate and subsequently causing severe ecological risks. The exploration of the underlying mechanisms on how microplastics aggregate in seawater and freshwater enables the prediction of their diffusivity, distribution, and bioavailability in the water environment. In this study microplastic model systems of polypropylene (PP) and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) were used to investigate the interactions and aggregation size between microplastics in seawater and with the response anionic sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT) surfactant dosages via electrophoretic mobility and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) measurements, supported by the UV-Vis spectrum analysis. This investigation revealed that mobile ions present in water ecosystems played a vital role in the surface interactions between microplastics and their aggregation behaviour. The surface charge of both PP and PVC microplastics were switched to a positive value at 5 wt.% of AOT and continued in the negative regime with increasing AOT concentration. Upon the addition of surfactant, surface charge neutralization and aggregation of PP and PVC microplastics were detected; however, the restabilization of microplastic was observed with increasing concentration of surfactant.

Investigation of Dioctyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate in Demulsifying Crude Oil-in-Water Emulsions.

This research investigated the performance of dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DSS), a double-chain anionic surfactant, in breaking crude oil-in-water emulsions. The response surface methodology was used to consider the effect of the DSS concentration, oil concentration, and shaking time on demulsification efficiency and obtain optimum demulsification conditions. Further single-factor experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of salinity, crude oil conditions (fresh and weathered), and gravity separation settling time. The results showed that DSS efficiently demulsified stable emulsions under different oil concentrations (500–3000 mg/L) within 15 min shaking time. Increasing DSS concentration to 900 mg/L (critical micelle concentration) increased the demulsification efficiency to 99%. DSS not only improved the demulsification efficiency but also did not impede the demulsifier interfacial adsorption at the oil–water interface due to the presence of the double-chain structure. The low molecular weight enables the homogeneous distribution of DSS molecules in the emulsion, leading to a high demulsification efficiency within 15 min. Analysis of variance results indicated the importance of considering the interaction of oil concentration and shaking time in demulsification. DSS could reduce the total extractable petroleum hydrocarbons in the separated water to <10 mg/L without gravity separation and could achieve promising demulsification performance at high salinity (36 g/L) and various concentrations of fresh and weathered oil. The demulsification mechanism was explained by analyzing the microscopic images and the transmittance of the emulsion. DSS could be an efficient double-chain anionic surfactant in demulsifying stable oil-in-water emulsions.

Sodium docusate as a cleaning agent for forward osmosis membranes fouled by landfill leachate wastewater

Membrane cleaning is critical for economic and scientific reasons in wastewater treatment systems. Sodium docusate is a laxative agent and removes cerumen (ear wax). Docusate penetrates the hard ear wax, making it softer and easier to remove. The same concept could be applied to soften and remove fouling layers on the membrane surface. Once softened, the foulants can be easily flushed with water. This innovative approach can address the challenge of developing superior methods to mitigate membrane fouling and material degradation. In this study, we evaluated the efficiency of sodium docusate for cleaning fouled forward osmosis membranes with real landfill leachate wastewater. Experiments were conducted to examine the impact of dose rate, contact time, flow or static conditions, and process configuration (forward osmosis (FO) or pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) upon fouling created by landfill leachate dewatering. A remarkable (99%) flux recovery was achieved using docusate at a small concentration of only 0.1% for 30 min. Furthermore, docusate can also effectively restore flux with static cleaning without using pumps to circulate the cleaning solution. Furthermore, cleaning efficiency can be achieved at neutral pH compatible with most membrane materials. From an economic and energy-saving perspective, static cleaning can almost achieve the same cleaning efficiency as kinetic cleaning for fouled forward osmosis membranes without the expense of additional pumping energy compared to kinetic cleaning. Since pumping energy is a major contributor to the overall energy of the forward osmosis system, it can be minimized to a certain degree by using a static cleaning approach and can bring good energy savings when using larger membrane areas. Studies of the contact angle on the membrane surface indicated that the contact angle was decreased compared to the fouled membrane after cleaning (e.g. 70.3° to 63.2° or FO mode and static cleaning). Scanning Electron Microscopy revealed that the cleaning strategy was successful. Infrared Spectroscopy showed that a small amount of sodium docusate remained on the membrane surface. Docusate is more environmentally friendly than acid or alkaline solutions from an environmental perspective. Furthermore, the cleaning solution can be reused for several cycles without discarding it due to the surfactant properties of docusate.

Evaluation of surfactant blends for enhanced oil recovery through activity maps

Better use of already exploited oil reservoirs using Enhanced Oil Recovery techniques is becoming essential. The use of surfactant blends is a common approach when individual surfactants are not effective. However, defining the optimum conditions for application becomes very challenging due to the number of variables involved in specific cases. In this work, blends of dioctyl sulfosuccinate sodium salt with Akypo LF2 and two surfactant ionic liquids (1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide) were evaluated for oil recovery. Activity maps, representations of the phase behavior of the surfactants as a function of blend ratio, salinity and temperature, were found to be useful tools to describe conditions leading to Winsor type III systems. Among the blends studied, mixtures with Akypo LF2 were found of interest for application at low temperatures, showing interfacial tensions close to 0.01 mN/m in a wide range of salinity concentrations. In the case of blends with ionic liquids, even though they led to more promising solubilization parameters, the high sensitivity of these mixtures to blend ratio changes discourages, in principle, their use for practical applications.

Efficacy of Omadacycline or Vancomycin Combined With Germinants for Preventing Clostridioides difficile Relapse in a Murine Model.

Clostridioides difficile infections (CDI) and recurrence (rCDI) are major health care burdens. Recurrence is likely caused by spores in the gastrointestinal tract that germinate after antibiotic therapy. This murine study explores germinant-antibiotic combinations for CDI. Previously described murine models were evaluated using C. difficile VPI 10463. The severe model compared omadacycline versus vancomycin in survival, weight loss, clinical scoring, and C. difficile toxin production. The nonsevere model compared these antibiotics with and without germinants (solution of sodium taurocholate, taurine, sodium docusate, calcium gluconate). Additionally, colon histopathology, bile acid analysis, environmental/spore shedding, and 16S sequencing was evaluated. In the severe model, omadacycline-treated mice had 60% survival versus 13.3% with vancomycin (hazard ratio [HR], 0.327; 95% confidence interval [CI],.126-.848; P = .015) along with decreased weight loss, and disease severity. In the nonsevere model, all mice survived with antibiotic-germinant treatment versus 60% antibiotics alone (HR, 0.109; 95% CI, .02-.410; P = .001). Omadacycline resulted in less changes in bile acids and microbiota composition. Germinant-treated mice showed no signs of rCDI, spore shedding, or significant toxin production at 15 days. In murine models of CDI, omadacycline improved survival versus vancomycin. Germinant-antibiotic combinations were more effective at preventing rCDI compared to antibiotics alone without inducing toxin production.

A Randomized, Double-blind, Active-controlled Exploratory Clinical Trial for the Evaluation of the Efficacy and Safety of Goodmorning S Granule® on Constipation

Constipation is a common gastrointestinal disease that reduces the quality of life and incurs considerable medical expenses. Bisacodyl and sodium docusate are generally used to treat constipation. This study assessed the effectiveness and safety of Goodmorning S Granule® (Hanpoong Pharm. Co., Ltd., Wanju, Korea) in functional constipation by a comparison with bisacodyl. A 2-week randomized, double-blind, active-controlled exploratory clinical trial was conducted to compare the treatment (Goodmorning S Granule®) with the control (bisacodyl). The efficacy was measured by the changes in transition, Bristol stool type, stomachache, clinical manifestation, defecation time after drug consumption, 36-item short-form survey (SF-36), and the results of improvement evaluation. The safety was evaluated by the incidence of adverse drug events and vital signs. Additional analyses were conducted by dividing the severity according to the proportion of Bristol Stool Scale types 1 and 2. Subjects were randomized to the treatment (n=24) or control (n=26) groups. No significant differences were observed in demographics. After 2 weeks from the baseline, the changes in the complete spontaneous bowel movement (CSBM) were higher in the treatment (4.00±2.62) group than in the control group (1.40±2.34) (p<0.05). The treatment group exhibited significant improvement in the score on the SF-36 questionnaire. The clinical side effects, such as stomachache and borborygmus, were reduced in the moderate constipation patients in the treatment group, according to additional analyses. Goodmorning S Granule®, a herbal medicine, was more effective in improving quality of life and CSBM per week and safer in the moderate constipation groups because of the reduced clinical side effects.

Therapeutic Mechanisms of Berberine to Improve the Intestinal Barrier Function via Modulating Gut Microbiota, TLR4/NF-κ B/MTORC Pathway and Autophagy in Cats

BackgroundInflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a disease that seriously harms human and animal health, has attracted many researchers’ attention because of its complexity and difficulty in treatment. Most research has involved rats and dogs, and very little was cats. We should know that gut microbiota varies significantly from animal to animal. Traditional Chinese Medicine and its monomer component have many advantages compared with antibiotics used in pet clinics. Numerous studies have shown berberine (berberine hydrochloride) therapeutic value for IBD. However, the specific mechanism remains to consider.ResultsWe assessed gut pathology and analyzed fecal bacterial composition using Histological staining and 16S rRNA sequence. Dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DSS) administration destroyed intestinal mucosal structure and changed the diversity of intestinal flora relative to control. RT-PCR and western blot confirmed specific molecular mechanisms that trigger acute inflammation and intestinal mucosal barrier function disruption after DSS treatment. And autophagy inhibition is typical pathogenesis of IBD. Interestingly, berberine ameliorates inflammation during the development of the intestinal by modulating the toll-like receptors 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) signaling pathway and activating autophagy. Berberine significantly reduces tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1β expression in cats’ serum. Enhancing the antioxidant effect of IBD cats is one of the protective mechanisms of berberine. We demonstrated that berberine repairs intestinal barrier function by activating the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) complex (MTORC), which inhibits autophagy.ConclusionBerberine can restore intestinal microbiota homeostasis and regulate the TLR4/NF-κB pathway, thereby controlling inflammatory responses. We propose a novel mechanism of berberine therapy for IBD, namely, berberine therapy can simultaneously activate MTORC and autophagy to restore intestinal mucosal barrier function in cats, which should be further studied to shed light on berberine to IBD.

Low‐Voltage Electrically Responsive Photonic Crystal Based on Weak‐Polar Colloidal System

AbstractElectrically responsive photonic crystal (ERPC) based on particle electrophoresis is a promising material to construct reflective color displays with low‐power‐consumption and antiglare advantages. However, the high driving voltages for the polar ERPC inevitably cause electrochemical reactions on the electrode, which decreases the stability and reversibility of electrical response. Here, a weak‐polar EPRC composed of hydrophobic SiO2 particles, 1,2‐dichlorobenzene (DCB), and dioctyl sulfosuccinate sodium salt (AOT) is fabricated based on the charge separation by AOT reverse micelles and formation of highly charged particles in DCB. Compared to the polar ERPCs, the SiO2/DCB‐AOT ERPC works at much lower voltages (0.5–1.7 V) and still possesses a wide color tuning range because the weak‐polar solvent applies less screening to the coulombic interactions. The low potential further renders the ERPC good capability against color fading in a strong field and long‐term reversibility during color switching, which addresses the critical concerns for its application in reflective displays.

Influence of Adsorption Characteristics of Surfactants Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate and Aerosol–OT on Dynamic Process of Water-Based Lubrication

Surfactant solutions are widely used in industry, and their steady-state lubrication properties have been comprehensively explored, while the “dynamic process” between steady states attracts much less attention. In this study, the lubrication behaviors of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium bis (2–ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (Aerosol–OT, AOT) solutions were comparatively and extensively discussed. Experimental results showed that the duration of the dynamic process of AOT solution lubrication was significantly shorter than that of SDS. The essence of the dynamic process was revealed from the aspects of the running-in of solid surfaces and the adsorption process of surfactant molecules. Unlike the general recognition that the friction force evolution mainly corresponds to the running-in of surfaces, this study indicated that the dynamic adsorption behavior of surfactant molecules mainly contributes to this process. Various experiments and analyses showed that the smaller steric hindrance and lower orientation speed of SDS molecules led to longer diffusion into the confined contact zone and a longer duration of friction force decrease. This work enhances our understanding of the dynamic friction process in water-based lubrication, which could also have important implications for oil-based lubrication and its industrial applications.

Ultrasound-assisted carboxymethylation of LignoForce Kraft lignin to produce biodispersants

Softwood contains up to 40 wt% of lignin, which makes it the most abundant polyphenolic biopolymer on earth. The applications of Kraft lignin, because of its poor solubility, are not as numerous as other water-soluble lignin derivatives, such as lignosulfonates. We investigated the ultrasound-assisted carboxymethylation of two softwood LignoForce Kraft lignins in sodium hydroxide with sodium chloroacetate (SCA) as the carboxylate group donor to yield a water-soluble product. Thermogravimetric analyzer, gel permeation chromatography, and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy characterized the physico-chemical properties of the carboxymethylated lignins. A photometric dispersion analyzer determined the ability of the carboxymethylated lignin to disperse kaolin clay aqueous suspensions. A SCA/lignin ratio of 12 and ultrasound at 20 W and 20 kHz yielded carboxymethylated lignins with a dispersion ability comparable to dioctyl sulfosuccinate sodium salt, a common dispersant. Ultrasound intensified the process by reducing the reaction time from 4 h (conventional process) to 30 min.

Formulation and Evaluation of Nimodipine Tablets Using Solid Dispersion Technique

The present study is an attempt to develop immediate release tablets of Nimodipine using solid dispersion technique to achieve rapid release in GIT which might result in enhanced absorption and thereby improved bioavailability. Various batches of Nimodipine solid dispersion (SD1-SD6) were prepared using fusion method, solvent evaporation and combination of these two methods (melt evaporation method/melting solvent method). PEG 6000 and PVP K30 were used as polymeric carrier in (drug: carrier) 1:1 ratio for all the formulations. Docusate sodium was used as surfactant in 0.025% to 0.085%. Drug-excipients interactions were carried out for pure drug and optimized formulations using FTIR studies. Six batches of Nimodipine immediate release tablets (F1 to F6) were developed by wet granulation method using its solid dispersion. Crospovidone was selected as super disintegrant and acetone as an organic solvent. All the batches of immediate release tablets were evaluated for different pre-compression and post-compression parameters including stability study of the optimized formulation. Among all formulations, F6 prepared by melt evaporation method with a high surfactant content showed the greatest drug release (101.49% ± 0.31%). The stability studies (formulation F6) showed there was no major differences in physical parameters and was stable even after a period of 3 months. % CDR of the accelerated time stability batch was 94.41% ± 0.265% of its content in 30 min which is showing immediate release and the drug content of the same stability batch was 99.87% ± 0.119%.

Urea Disrupts the AOT Reverse Micelle Structure at Low Temperatures.

Aside from its prominent role in the excretory system, urea is also a known protein denaturant. Here, we characterize urea as it behaves in confined spaces of AOT (sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate) reverse micelles as a model of tight, confined spaces found at the subcellular level. Dynamic light scattering revealed that low temperatures (275 K) caused the smallest of the reverse micelle sizes, w0 = 10, to destabilize and dramatically increase in apparent hydrodynamic diameter. We attribute this to urea embedded into the surfactant interface as confirmed by 2D 1H-NOESY NMR spectroscopy. This increase in size in turn caused the hydrogen exchange between urea and water within the nanosized reverse micelles to increase as measured by 1D EXSY-NMR. A minimal enlarging effect and no increase in hydrogen exchange were observed when aqueous urea was introduced into w0 = 15 or 20 reverse micelles, suggesting that this effect is unique to particularly small-diameter spaces (∼7 nm).

Synthesis and characterizations of sugar-glass nanoparticles mediated protein delivery system for tissue engineering application

The present work focuses on the synthesis and characterization of a sugar-glass nanoparticle (SGnP) based reservoir type protein delivery system pertinent to tissue engineering applications. The SGnP nanocarriers were prepared via inverse micelle of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate based on an anionic surfactant and subsequent flash-freezing technique. Initially, a total of five different grades of protein-free SGnPs have been prepared to examine the effects of systematic changes in starting concentrations of the aqueous phase, organic solvent, the molar ratio of water, and surfactant in controlling the size, shape, and uniformity of micelles. Evidently, the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) results confirmed that the SGnP can be successfully prepared. Subsequently, SGnP based protein depot has been validated using bovine serum albumin (BSA), horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and growth and differentiation factor-5 (GDF-5). The particle size, morphology, protein encapsulation efficiency and in vitro release kinetics were assessed using SEM, FTIR, UV–visible spectroscopy and Bradford protein assays. Excellent encapsulation efficiency (93%–94%) and sustained release behaviour of BSA (∼22% protein release after 14 d) and GDF-5 proteins (∼29% protein release after 30 d) were exhibited by the optimal grades of SGnP constructs with an average particle size of 266 nm and 93 nm, respectively. Furthermore, FTIR, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and NATIVE-PAGE studies results confirm successful encapsulation, stability and preserving the structural integrity of proteins placed into the core of the SGnP constructs. Evidently, a very high (93%) residual HRP enzyme activity signifies the capability of our SGnP system to protect the encapsulated proteins from process-related stresses. In vitro cytotoxicity and fluorescence cell morphology analyses using human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells affirmed good cytocompatibility of protein encapsulated SGnP. Overall, the study findings indicate SGnP nanocarrier-mediated protein delivery systems as a promising approach complementary to conventional techniques in tissue engineering and therapeutic applications.

Using Aerosol OT in Hexane Solution to Synthesize Calcium Nitrate Self-Healing Refined Microcapsules for Construction Applications

The micro-encapsulation procedure of calcium nitrate in urea-formaldehyde shell is well known. The most recent developed method for the synthesis of the calcium nitrate self-healing micro-capsules was based on the in-situ polymerization using water-in-oil emulsion. Although the microcapsules’ yield was significantly improved using this approach, incorporating the micro-capsules into concrete mixes has been found to reduce strength. One potential strength reduction cause might be the presence of sulfonic acid as a component in the continuous (oil) phase. As the anionic surfactant, Aerosol OT (AOT) has been widely used to prepare water-in-oil emulsions and to form aggregates in non-polar solvents; submicron calcium nitrate refined microcapsules were synthesized using AOT in hexane solution. While the aqueous phase in the original encapsulation procedure has not been altered, the continuous organic phase was prepared by dissolving AOT in hexane. The prepared microcapsules were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The preliminary assessment of the effect of incorporating of the refined microcapsules into cementitious materials has been carried out by preparing mortar mixes using 75% capsules’ concentration (by weight of cement). The reported yield values, average shell thickness, and average diameter of the prepared microcapsules were found satisfactory. Moreover, the mortar samples containing calcium nitrate refined microcapsules that were prepared using the proposed method did not experience significant reduction in their mechanical properties. Hence, such encapsulation procedure may be adopted for further investigation of the self-healing efficiency in cementitious materials of the microcapsules prepared using the proposed procedure. Future work shall be directed towards this end.

Enhanced luminescence and dispersion stability of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals by surface modification via O/W emulsion

Metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) attract tremendous research attentions as next-generation functional materials due to their excellent photophysical nature. A common disadvantage of perovskite NCs is very poor stability and dispersibility in polar solvents. Then, we encapsulate CsPbBr3 NCs into an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion formed with sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT) to improve their dispersion property and chemical stability. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy indicate that the non-luminescent Cs4PbBr6 NC precursor converted to luminescent CsPbBr3 NCs in the O/W emulsion process, as excess CsBr dissociated at emulsion interfaces. CsPbBr3 NCs encapsulated with an AOT-based emulsion shell (AOT-modified CsPbBr3 NCs) were obtained after freeze-drying the O/W emulsion, exhibiting good dispersibility in hydrophilic polar solvents such as alcohols and water. The photoluminescence intensity of AOT-modified CsPbBr3 NCs remained 40–56% even after dispersion in water for 180 min, while unmodified ones rapidly degraded within 30 min. These results suggest that the interfacial molecular order of the O/W emulsion should be condensed on the surfaces of CsPbBr3 NCs and enhance their affinity and stability to polar solvents. The present findings provide a facile surface modification approach to attain perovskite and related halide compounds NCs applicable to polar solvents or water environments.

Investigation of AOT/isooctane/water reverse microemulsion system with the presence of different mass ratios of SDS: Conductivity and water solubilization

The aim of this study is to investigate the performance of mixed surfactants reverse microemulsion systems by adding different proportions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to sodium bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate(AOT) /isooctane/water reverse microemulsions. The effects of solubilization water, conductivity and KCl ionic strength on the formation boundary and formation process of AOT/isooctane/water reverse microemulsion were investigated by combining experiments with dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. The formation mechanism is initially explored by mutual validation of experiments and simulations. This approach can help researchers to quickly infer structural changes and also reduce the cost of experimental development. Based on the performance of the AOT reverse microemulsion system, AOT-SDS reverse microemulsion system was prepared with the mass ratios of AOT: SDS of 9:1, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7, 1:9. The reverse microemulsion with AOT: SDS of 9:1 demonstrated the best characteristics in water solubilization and stability. By comparing the performance of two microemulsions to demonstrate that SDS changed the structure of AOT reverse microemulsion and its solubilization water volume and stability. Moreover, we believe that the AOT-SDS/isooctane/water microemulsion system is worthy to be developed by comparing similar mixed surfactant microemulsion systems.
